Something I forgot to mention in the video: In the paste menu under 'namespace', this is also used for single characters, not just for adding to other characters. 'From selection' only uses the controls you have selected, but 'from file' will use ALL of the controls saved for that pose, even if you don't have them selected while pasting. Sorry for any confusion!
Thanks for the info and also the way you just explains it's quite easy and understanding also how to camera animation and free camera set ups in maya and what is live selection in maya??
Thank you for the vid, it's baffeling that maya doesn't have an includied pose library and this is a great crash course on this tool that's been filling that void for like 15 years i guess. Was very helpful!
Thank you sooooo much!!! ☺☺☺ I was struggling with my assignment, but you helped me fix the problem! This tutorial was clear, concise and well edited. Keep at it!!
very good video, i have one question, If i want to download reference from internet it should be compatible with my rig no? so my question is which is the most used rigging tool for face or body? and thank you for your time😊
This is a fantastic tutorial. Thank you for making it. I learned things. I laughed. Studio Library seems like a dream come true. Apparently I'm years late to the party, but never too late to stop re-posing that walk or run over and over... Sadly, Studio Library doesn't seem to be saving any joint information for the upper body joints. Well, it knows there is a saved joint, and it will miss it or select it when applying, but none of the move info... I can't find any leads on how/what to troubleshoot. One step at a time. Your video was a great first step for me. Thank you.
Thanks so much! I'm glad to know it helps :) You're right, it's never too late to find new tools, especially ones that save so much time! I'd love to know if you ever figure out a solution to the joints. I've only had luck saving sets/poses that use controllers, controller-less joints don't seem to work.
You actually do it through file explorer and not in Maya. You have to drag and drop the file into the studio library directory you set up (you can check where on your PC this is in studio libraries settings) and then just hit refresh in the program and they should show up!
@@sudhanvakashyap8437 Thank you so much. But I have another question that "would you mind offering me a tool or plug-in to create controls to make facial expression?". Thanks.
@@giautran6609 I don't really know about a tool to make controls, but I would refer you to @antCGi 's channel who is mainly a rig artist. He has multiple paid script/tools that can probably of use. I haven't checked out any other artist so this is all I know on the topic
Hi. I tried to setup a mirror table but i did not get any asterisk with my left or right side names (_l_ , _r_) and when I saved it, it could not work with my poses. Did I miss something with the setup process?
I created a mirror table but when i mirror any poses i make, it indeed does mirror them but scrambles the poses a bit, moving one leg too far or rotating a foot i did not rotate in the initial pose. Why does it do that? Did i make a mistake?
Heya Skitty! Wonderful and very useful overview of what StudioLibrary is capable of, i even learned some new and very useful features i didn't know was there like the Mirror function! I do have a question you may be able to help clarify?: You mentioned the mirror function was really useful for quickly setting up a hand-pose library, but I've been trying to achieve that, only getting an error message reading: "No objects match when loading data. Turn on debug mode to see more details" Perhaps I'm doing it the wrong way? - First i made a selection set for both the Right and Left fingers. - Then i made a "Fist-pose" for the Right fingers and saved it. - I then clicked the selection set for the Left fingers, clicked the saved "Fist-pose" and tried the mirror option, but was met with that Error code i mentioned above. Do you have any clue what i might be doing wrong? Also quick side-note i noticed that might be helpful for anyone with an issue i had with the greyed out "mirror option": If your mirror option on your saved pose is "unselectable" eventho you created a mirror table and put it in your selections folder, try creating a new mirror table and keep it in your "poses" folder (for instance if you have the issue with a "face-pose" folder not letting you mirror any of the face-poses, try creating another mirror table and leave it in the same folder as the poses!) Anyways, thanks again for the great tips and tricks Skitty! Keep up the great work :)
Wonderful to have this straight to the point tutorial for one of animation's most useful and most underdocumented tool ever (how come there's not a single help file or manual anyway??), you're a treasure Skitty. What's your approach to handle layered animations with it? Same for path animations. For me it seems like paths are ignored and saves from selected single layer only. Keep up the good work.
Great intro to what looks like an invaluable tool. Am I correct in thinking that neither Maya (or anyone else) seems to offer a reasonable competitor for this free product?
No competition as of yet. At my old job we had an in-house library tool, until they realized Studio Library was better in every way, so they made the switch.
@@SkittyAnimates Thanks for your speedy response. Because of your video I've dug in. But that leads me to making big decisions on controllers/rigs (because Studio Library insists on controllers). How come I've found no good material comparing the various rigging options (Human IK, Advanced Skeleton, Tuna etc)? Is it that everyone knows the answer but me? Human IK has been working great for the body stuff that I need, but that's just it, nothing in maya for the face? Is Advanced Skeleton the only way to go here (I notice their face rig insists that you use their body rig, so my HIK work is lost if I switch over). I know...lots of questions that you surely don't have time to answer....but perhaps fodder for an upcoming tut? Thanks again for your great response and for your charming work.
No problem at all! When it comes to rigging options.. I'm still exploring them myself, I'm pretty new to that area. I'm surprised there's no videos out there comparing the plugins. I've tried human IK but the problem I have is that it replaces the existing skeleton with a new one, I'm guessing the other tools are the same. I need the original skeletons for UE. From what I understand riggers tend to make their own personal toolkits instead, maybe the lack of facial stuff is part of the reason for that.
@@SkittyAnimates I stick with UE skeleton conventions 100%. So we're walking the same path there. While I don't use UE much at this point, I've haven't noticed that creating my rig in HIK resulted in a new skeleton. I've never used Quick Rig, however, so that might be the difference. But in Maya, using UE skeletons and HIK, I can willy nilly bring in UE animations clips and mocap and plop them on my UE skeleton characters. I'd be happy to send you a script I wrote that makes some of this HIK/UE skeleton process easier. But yeah, no facial rig, means either I use my old one or I can't benefit as much from Studio Library...decisions! - Best.
Ah, maybe I need to try HumanIK without using Quick Rig then. Worth a shot. As for the script, I'd love to try it out, thank you! If you plan on doing a lot of animating with this character, I think you'd be happier taking the time to use tools that offer a facial rig you can use in Studio Library, so long as you aren't on a deadline of course. No pressure or anything but if you use Discord at all you're welcome to join our server and talk more about these rigging options, there's likely some people with more insight than myself :)
do you know if there is any way to prevent the mirror function from inverting the values when mirroring? I have a rig where the left and right sie both use positive values to indicate curling the fingers inward, so the mirror function makes the fingers go in the opposite direction as intended
You are totally correct about it being frustrating. I got a Forky character rig from Agora Community and it included a Studio Library file. Thing is, no matter how I reference the model, Studio library says it cannot match the objects. Do you ever experience this and how do you fix the problem?
I try to use name space function, I have one character posed and want to make another character in the same scene to do the same pose, but don’t know how to do it, the drop menu can’t find other character, do you know how to fix this?
hellohi. Could you help me please? My blending option is not working somehow. Any time I set expl 30% and hit apply, it stays the same posed without blending.
Hi there, you don't have to hit apply after choosing the blend option, that will reapply the pose in full. The blend slider applies automatically. Make sure the controls you want to paste to are selected, and then use your slider.
@@SkittyAnimates I also found this on the autodesk forum. The file path contains no characters exactly. But what character are we talking about? About my downloaded rigs?
Not the rigs, but the name of the path the library is saved to on your computer. If it's having an issue related to ascii, there's probably something in the name that isn't letters/numbers.
You can, so long as they have a similar namespace. For ex. the Dana & David rigs have the same rig set-up, so you can copy a Dana pose & paste it on David with minimal tweaking.
You have to drop the poses into the folder StudioLibrary creates on your computer, then hit the refresh button in StudioLibrary and they should load in
Studio Library is designed for saving controller based selections/poses. Though I haven't tried, I don't believe selections from the Shape Editor would work.
Mirroring is really useful if you want to copy the pose of an arm or a leg to the other side. So like if you posed out a relaxed hand pose, you can copy it instead of having to pose it out again on the other hand.
Something I forgot to mention in the video:
In the paste menu under 'namespace', this is also used for single characters, not just for adding to other characters.
