No no no! Don't cut on the upper and lower surface! That's where the material has the biggest influence on the stiffness of the arm. You can make your arms lighter but only on the sides
If I am not mistaking (I may), biggest influence will be on sides, not on top and bottom. Prop will produce vertical force, in this case moment will be against side wall which is 1.5 high. Of course moment will be agains top and bottom, however, thickness of top and bottom walls just 1/8" x 2walls=1/4" vs side wall 1 1/2". In my opinion 1 1/2" is much stronger than 1/4".
