  • I've been really into Shuggie Otis lately. Such a cool guy - he can play like crazy, but also writes these great unpredictable r&b tunes.

    The story goes that when the Brother's Johnson re-recorded this song in 1977, they could not play the outro and had Lee Ritenour do it in the studio. I'm really glad you've found Shuggie. David Byrne really liked him and re-released, "Inspiration Information" on his, Luaka Bop label with a few songs from the previous album, ""Freedom Flight." It is amazing. It sounds like it heavily influenced Prince. It just has this DIY aesthetic about it. I do believe he in fact really did do everything himself. Very soulful, but slightly askew. Shuggie Otis should be more well known. Put, "Inspiration Information" on your playlist...thank me later.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 года назад +3

      Oh yeah, "Inspiration Information" and "Night Flight" live in my playlists these days. I completely agree with the DIY sideways soul assessment. Ina weird way, connects with JJ Cale for me.

      @@EricHaugenGuitar WOW, you replied. I'm so happy! When I hear Cale, I think John Cale...he's a little off kilter too. Probably why I like him. I have heard of J.J. Cale, but that's about it. I'll give him a try. I came for the Ribot...and stayed for the Shuggie. P.S. I just listened to Troubadour. Even excluding, "Cocaine." It sounds a lot like Eric Clapton, but without all of the Eric Clapton. But I have a feeling it's probably more along the lines of Eric Clapton sounds a lot like J.J. Cale.

    Hi, great video (and channel). I've also been trying to figure out the solo from Shuggie's video with his son. After watching it in slow motion, it seems to me that Shuggie uses the open E string when playing the A and E minor patterns, instead of playing the E note on the G string, 9th fret. (e.g. in the A part he goes: [e string] -- 10 -- 10p9 -- [b string] -- 10 -- [e string] -- 0 --). His right hand keeps moving up and down in triplets. I'm not 100% sure but it makes it much easier to play for me.

    To my everlasting shame, I just increased the "likes" from the devilishly-perfect 666 to 667.
    But this song has been in my mind for the last week, and I love that you broke down the "solo." Which, of course, is NOT a solo because it involves a duet of harmonized guitars. But DAMN it sounds good. I heard the Brothers Johnson cover first as a kid, but discovered Shuggie about ten years ago.

      You are correct! Bluesy progressions can very easily skew Dorian.
      I'm actually putting together a video on how modes relate to standard scales as we speak! Should be out next Fri :-D

    Some tunes off of john mayer's new album felt like they were very inspired by shuggie. in particular the tracks "moving on and getting over" as well as "still feel like your man".

      Totally! I hear that too!
      John and I are the same age, and were at Berklee at the same time. Had a few classes with him - nice dude, funny guy.

    Your tones are so juicy! I went to my local music store today to look at the Strymon Deco and Flint...wow $360 each (Canadian dollars)! I guess I'm selling my Hagstrom Viking Deluxe!

      ooooh The Viking Deluxe is on my list of "guitars I want!" I used to have a swede with p90s and it was killer!
      I love my strymon stuff, but you could easily get similar tones with a good transparent overdrive and any old reverb pedal :-D
      You could try a Timmy and a Boss RV-5, that's what I have at my teaching studio and it sounds quite good!
      Also I love the ibanez ts808 reissue and TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb - quite affordable and nice sounding!

      Ahh...thanks for the info on alternatives to the Strymon pedals. I may end up going that route in the interest of not going broke! If you're interested in my Hagstrom, shoot me a message.

    I read that Lee Ritemour created the Solo section, is that true?

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure - I just googled it. It looks like Lee did the solo on the Brothers Johnson version, but Shuggie did the solo on the original - but who knows!

      Yes, but only on the Brother's Johnson 1977 cover of it. Shuggie Otis played the solo on the original.

    When you say that is all the parts of the song, you omitted the bridge section before the outro... dont mind me, I'm a little OCD
