The Patagonia Stormfront Backpack is a 100% waterproof backpack made from heavy-duty materials. The fabric is nylon, PU coated on the exterior and single-side TPU coated on the inside to keep the gear dry. The rugged TIZIP (the I is silent) is fully waterproof and durable for whatever the weather gods throw at it. The shoulder straps, back panel and waistbelt are comfortable and feature 3-D spacer mesh to facilitate airflow and keep you cooler. The Minimalist Vest (not included) can be attached to the D-rings at the straps and belt to increase organisation. The simple features on the outside of the pack included rod tube holders, a D-ring and lash points for additional gear and a water-resistant stash pocket for quick access to small items. The Stormfront is for the fisherman who enjoys hiking to the best fishing spot and won’t back down because of a little rain.

What sets this apart from the Nelson Rigg Hurricane for a lot less money though?

The straps on the side can it hold a 3kg tripod?

Hmm good question - it's not indicated what the load threshold is for the straps. Based upon the TPU and nylon materials - I'd say that they'd be more than able to hold your tripod if you really needed it to (as long as you strap it properly), but I'd advise against using it to regularly carry a tripod as it'll most likely eventually sustain some wear on those straps and the stitching (because the straps are mainly for attaching fishing rods which are much lighter).
      Hope that helps! :)
