Although rather than engaging in an epic conversation, the two clashed immediately and the podcast quickly fell apart. Yes. What a stupid fucking title. Ethan is doing fine. He has talked about this episode many times. And as he says, he was depressed before the episode. There are something called "triggers", which is what Burr was for Ethan.
And of course Burr felt bad. This was also when Burr was a bit too into the drink, which might have been a factor. But maybe not. I see how going on podcasts all the time gets tiresome.

Love how SunnyV2 leaves out the main and most important reason why the Philly show is so legendary. I'm gonna say this, NEVER look up to or idolize people who has a big ego and are jerks.
Bill just isn't a fun person to interview. He's a comedic legend, but not a good interviewee.
HIS interviews are awesome... cause he's usually with a guest who's also a comic and there's no ground to cover. But yeah, Bill's got HELLA walls up whenever anybody who's not a comic sits down with him.
It low-key feels like a luck of the draw type deal with Bill on whether you’re gna get a good interview. I think he has many more good interviews than bad and he almost always throws jabs and jokes at the person interviewing, but sometimes he’s extra extra harsh. In the H3 one I think it was a combination of him being extra harsh coupled with Ethan’s VERY lacklustre interviewing skills that just made it awkward.
Tell that to Conan O'Brien. Bill Burr is a fantastastic interviewee. He just has zero tolerance for bullshit. But bullshit is all this inauthentic owner of a podcast has to offer. This is why the episode got derailed. Ethan is a shill, fake compliments, fake laughter, no preparation and was just looking for a low-effort repeat of Bill Burrs last 150 podcast appearances somewhere else. Bill Burr wanted none of this and also has been protective of his privacy for years. It's not like Ethan would have done something enlightening with Bill's private information.
I think it’s because Ethan had been interviewing complete pushovers. Ethan wasn’t ready for someone more abrasive and definitely should have done more research in that respect because it’s something that Burr has been open about.
If he seems uncomfortable talking about something say my fault and move onto something else, go along with the jabs, stay grounded, don’t make anything seem like you’re trying to put him down. He’s a tough customer but Ethan just made a lot of stupid choices in that first interview.

When I did watch the H3 podcast, I remember Ethan ALWAYS trying to prod more info out of guests when they say they don't want to talk about a subject anymore. And Bill's the first one to push back and say 'fuck off, I'm not giving more info'.

@@Oceanman705Actually, he's said that the Burr incident is what finally prompted him to start taking the Lexapro he'd already been prescribed. So, I'd say his mental health was already struggling, but the incident prompted him to actively address his mental health, which really benefited him.

I feel like any good interviewer should be able to push past an interviewee not wanting to answer a question though , is it a little unusual ? sure Should it be a point you fixate on and make the whole conversation even more awkward? Exactly! Bill Burr was a grumpy asshole, but that's who he is. He acts like that in a lot of interviews. I can't understand why Ethan would jump into an interview with someone as challenging as Bill Burr and expect a different result. It seems like he was completely unprepared; he didn't do any research into Burr's previous interviews and try to learn/avoid things that rub him the wrong way and he didn't bother to come up with interesting or original questions.
If he had anti depressants he already saw a doctor that believed he was depressed
Ethan either really over estimated his own skill level and experience, or he grossly underestimated Bill Burr's ability to...well, to be Bill Burr.
For Ethan to jump into interviewing someone like Bill Burr, being relatively new to podcasting and interviewing real celebrities (not youtube and tiktok influencers), and be totally unprepared to handle a guest that challenging was a terrible idea. Had he done his research and taken the time to listen to a bunch of Burr's other interviews, he would have known he can be a closed off, moody, asshole during interviews. He could have at least tried to learn and avoid what triggers him (like compliments right out the gate), what has rubbed him the wrong way in previous interviews, and spent time coming up with interesting, original, and light hearted topics. I mean, saying that bullying is good for kids and implying that Bill Burr is a creep about his own daughter....that was the best he could do?
That being said, Bill Burr was an asshole and there was just no reason to act like that. I think the problem is people like Ethan get used to bill burrs stage persona and expect him to be the exact same in real life. You can't expect a comedian to behave as an entertainer 100% of the time, they're people too not just dancing monkeys. It's like knowing somebody who is a doctor and asking them medical questions right when they get home from a 12 hour shift. Bill burr is less abrasive while on stage cause he's paid to be there and make people laugh, interviews aren't for laughs so I can't blame him for being more serious off stage.
