This is great content for your channel Liam. This is the kind of stuff us golfers never get to see, and it is really interesting. Greenkeepers are the unsung heroes of the golf club.
Started working on a golf course at 8 yrs old and was part of my training to be a Pro. This is a wonderful video Liam because some golfers have no idea how hard the green keepers work to make the course beautiful.
I used to be involved at a non league football club and we had one of the best non league groundsmen in the country. We had so much trouble with leather jackets not just through eating the roots but from Badgers digging the pitch to get to them. Some mornings you’d go in and the pitch was like a war zone with deep, holes dug all over the pitch, it could take literally hours and hours to repair then the following morning it’d be the same again. We got around that by buying an electric fence....best £1000 we ever spent as it almost stopped that issue overnight. Unfortunately the leather jackets were still there but it cured a serious issue.
videos like this are great for helping golfers appreciate the work involved in keeping their courses healthy and ready for play. That helps players value the game in all respects. Kudos, Liam!
Fascinating to see this side of golf explained in more detail. Everyone mainly thinks of green keepers as glorified grass cutters. This video highlights how far that is from the truth. You need to be a complete professional in your field to keep a course in good condition and you’ve a brilliant green keeper there. The unsung hero’s of golf, without their knowledge and commitment we’d be bashing balls around a farmers field! Superb video guys.
I’m really into this. Keep lawns at home and have done this the last two autumns. Only small lawns so nowhere near as many but still back breaking picking them up. Second time used a powerful wet and dry vac which worked in the most part but because of the moisture etc. not as well as I’d have liked. I’m going to come up with something. This practice alone improves the turf no end. Add that to all the other cultural practices performed by the green keeping crews and it amounts to a lot of hard work. Green keepers are the unsung heroes of golf and need to be appreciated. Power to you and your kind Dave👍 and a big👍 to you too Liam for highlighting this in your videos. At least all the Golf Mates now know what goes on.
I've been a Greenkeeper for 18 years and I've got big respect to Liam for helping out and showing golfers what greenkeeping is really like... Unsociable hours, weekend work, and poor pay in relation to skills and knowledge... I don't really have many positives to say about the job on the whole except for healthy fresh air and and a sense of pride in your work when the course is good.. We all work to pay bills at the end of the day though, and unfortunately greenkeeping is on the whole, very poorly paid... Hopefully these vids will enlighten golfers about the amazing and hard work your Greenkeepers put in to your course to be at its best, it's a never ending story.... Cheers Liam.... 👍🏻👌🏻
This is perhaps one of the best videos you have done! With 13 years golf course maintenance under my belt I know what it takes to keep a course in good condition. More golfers should know how much work is put in day to day. I'll bet with your interaction with the maintenance aspect you will gain a new respect for those that keep our courses playable and what it takes to do so.
@@antjohn1397 no we can’t they band the chemical a couple of years ago that killed them so there’s nothing you can do about them , apart from what was shown in the video
Very interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes at a golf course, maybe make people appreciate how much work goes in to it! Great video as always Liam
And I'm glad you guys are showing what us greenkeepers have to put up with and to educate some golfers on what actually occurs on their local courses. More videos should be made like this for golfers to learn and to appreciate their courses a lot more!
Just an amazing video. We are looking at real "FISH FOOD". Two thumbs up to all of the golf course superintendents who work hard to maintain the courses.
Great video and very interesting. This series will be very informative and let people know the hard work our greenkeepers due so that we have a great turf to play on. Great job Liam.
Love these green keepers videos Liam, keep them coming thorough out the year it will be fascinating. I’d never have thought all those things where under my feet as I putt!
I do enjoy the green keeper videos. It’s things we as golfers need to be more appreciative of. Thanks for sharing this side of golf we don’t often see.
The effort that goes into keeping these golf courses looking and playing so well really goes unnoticed. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention so that I can appreciate even more the work that goes into keeping our courses looking so good all year round 👏👏👏👏
Just one of the many jobs our green keepers have to do to keep our courses looking good. It still amazes me sometimes that even after all their hard work , there are still some people out there who still dont repair pitch marks and divots. If we all did our bit to help, surely it would make the lives these great keepers of our courses a little less stressful. Great insight Liam
Liam , Big Respect to all green keeping staff, very very interesting, thay say you learn something new every day, today I have, excellent vlog, can't wait to see the next one, keep up the good work, the unseen heroes of the courses . ⛳👍🏴
I gave you one job and one job only, nearly spat my drink out when you went to the drone footage, absolutely priceless and having watched all of your videos I know it wasn't just a stunt for the camera.
Great little video Liam, thank you for doing this, this was a fantastic insight into the world of the greenkeeper, I've never seen this before. Great content, Liam!!
Wow ! Thanks Liam and Dave for this info,I had no idea that these little blighters did so much damage to the Green's, I always thought it was the earth worms !
The golfers that don't fix their pitch marks are normally the first to complain about the shape of the greens. Fix yours and 2 more takes 2 minutes maybe
Brilliant video 👍 well done Dave it's great to see a top greenkeeper with knowledge and how to resolve issues all greenkeepers are facing with life without chemicals. Well done Liam for highlighting greenkeeper problems it will go a long way for golfers to try and understand the issues and hard dedicated work of greenkeepers. We're not just here to be moaned at lol
Huge respect to all green keepers, I’m chumy with my local gk here in Australia and I remember a issue with locusts and the only well best remedy was encouraging the birds in more feeders in the trees ect it did sort of help but the feral cats case on the seen 🤦🏻♂️ never ending for them boys if you ever see your green keepers/ grounds man buy them a coffee show them we love them, without them out game wouldn’t be possible 🙏👍👌
Do you know what...... this is one of the best golf videos I’ve seen...... this is why golf mates channel is up there with the best, I don’t know why, but I was enthralled by this video. Fantastic Liam, keep up the good work...... your not bad for a ‘Bowtener’ Ryan from Wigan 😜
Love this video Liam it really shows just the tip of the iceberg of what the ground crew has to do to keep course looking good a big thank you to the ground crew of golf courses all over the world thanks mates.
And that's another very valid factor to add to the video you did last week on green fees. When you see what groundsmen do you see the value for the fees you pay better.
Was out playing today and noticed a couple of greens had "holes" pecked in by birds. I was wondering what they were after. Very interesting stuff and a big shout out to Dave and all the greenkeepers who keep our courses looking so good
We take greenkeepers a little for granted sometimes , they do a great job . just wondered if it would be quicker to gather the little blighters up with a broom . Anyway another great vlog Liam thank you :-)
I'd be more worried about the squirrel looking for his nuts on the green 😂 - Caddyshack just came to mind LMAO. Are you paying him for guest appearances? 🤣
Great vlog Liam. Very interesting and informative. I would love to see you do a vlog on green divot repair, highlighting the damage not repairing them can do to greens. This is a pet bug-bear of mine when I reach a green and see all the pitch marks that haven't been repaired. I've been told that if you repair a pitch mark the green will recover in 5 days, if not, then it take 5 weeks. If you can get OMP to give us a practical demonstration/advice on a 5W vs Hybrid. I'm 68 and would appreciate his/your advice. Keep up the good work.
Love this, things we don't usually see the green keepers do. lots of hard work behind the scenes to make our rounds more enjoyable. Thanks for bringing this to us Liam, I hope to see more videos like this
Great behind the scenes video Liam. Just one tiny bit of what grounds crews have to deal with to keep us all happily hacking around the course. Shocking how many grubs are just in that little area.

When I was 16, I worked at a resort that offered a nine hole and an eighteen hole course. A course properly maintained takes many hours of painstaking work. We started at 5:00, my first day the senior greens master was “showing me the ropes”. At the correct time, he says ‘Look, I’ve dropped the cupsetter in the fairway, run down and get it.’ Timing was perfect, on comes the fairway sprinklers as I was well into the fairway. Initiation day...
Just found this Liam, and I am aware of leatherjackets as my lawn has been invaded by the little sods and you see the yellow dead patches where the roots have been killed. You have shown me a way to hopefully treat my lawn as the other method I have tried involves watering a live solution with microbugs that feed on the lavea and eggs in the ground.
