Hi Robbie, my son plays rugby for B.R.A. at Roughort (Mallusk). There is a huge amount of sand on their pitches and I feel they are the best pitches of any of the schools in Northern Ireland. At the start of the season the grass looks like a thick carpet and the pitches are playable when most other schools’ pitches are a mess after prolonged heavy rainfall. There’s a clear difference & that difference is the sand. P.S. the quality of that piece is brilliant.

@@Premier_lawns_official these newer turf grasses being bred thrive in sand compared to any other soil BESIDES for new zoysia ultra dwarfed cultivars. Drainage yes is a huge reason, reducing thatch by light top dressing but mainly that's done by verticutting, we verticut and topdress every two weeks during the growing season for new Bermuda greens and bentgrass like A1, A4, 007, 777 etc etc. These newer grasses can handle salt a ton of it, that's not a factor really even if it is in the sand you can flush it out with heavy rain or a greens flush with irrigation which is usually 60 mins watering. The greens aren't completely sand if people think that they're wrong, 90% sand %10 peat to absorbed a little water hence it's a root zone mix we just use pure sand for topdressing. Also you don't get firmer greens from sand, sure they drain quicker but with sand greens you can dry them to the bone like they do on the PGA to the point of grass dying if weather permits, this is how they get hard as a rock and super firm. Sand is also used for better displacement, fresh oxygen in, carbon and other gasses out. When we water for a long time the water acts like sub air pulling air into the root zone that's why they designed it in the first place and to gave dry greens whenever. Those are most of the reasons why we use sand but if we had a choice WE WOULDNT USE SAND, its so hard on everything from mowers to tines and even drainage eventually once time happens

Maybe a video on tools you can buy at B&Q to look after your own lawn would be useful. eg Electric scarifier (Ryobi?) and no idea where you can own your own verticutter or something to aerate your lawn.

We use sand for many different reasons, first the newer turf grasses do best and thrive in sand, roots grow as deep as possible 10 to 12 inches even deeper on some greens. Top dressing a green without aeration is to control thatch mainly because these grasses create so much thatch, the sand cuts that down. These machines in the videos are great mainly the vertidrain system I would never use this other machine not needed. Even if you use these machines you run a risk by not pulling any plugs with hollow tines aeration down the road, soil layering which can lead to black layer.

  • @MoistTowelette125

As a groundskeeper on a golf course, this is the worst job to do. It’s 9-10 hours nonstop, the machine goes 1mph and all you’re doing is hauling buckets of dirt. Luckily, we haven’t done it in a few years. 🤗

Better question is why does the average member that is generally a mid to high handicap player complain endlessly about things like this and expect tournament conditions at their local clubs for the poultry few hundred pounds per year they’re paying when they aren’t even pulling out the putter until their 8th or 9th shot, at which point, what does it matter about the greens conditions or pin placements etc. If they invested more time practicing or actually having lessons than they do spending time drinking coffee in the clubhouse or complaining about the course and greens conditions which are irrelevant if it’s taking you 8-9 shots to actually reach the green, at that point you’ve got bigger worries such as the poor quality of your actual golf game

@@kevindick1110 oh I don’t do any of them buddy, I just used to be a greenkeeper and that’s what the overwhelming majority of the members used to do, blame the course and it’s conditions, yet, funnily enough, the low handicap to scratch members and visitors would just turn, play, and consistently go around under par with zero complaints, yet they were the ones who would have legitimacy and credibility to complain because things such as the conditions of the greens and pin positions could actually be the difference between birdie and par. They even went as far as accusing the course manager of moving the fairways because they were of such a poor standard that they couldn’t hit the ball 80-100 yards to make the fairway. The course managers response was you can’t make the greens on the par 3s either so I suppose by your rationale that I’ve lifted all the par 3 greens up and moved them to make the par 3s longer. The average club golfer or member in my experience blames anything and everything with the exception of their own ability, simply cannot be their own lack of any sort of ability that results in taking a 12 on a par 4, it has to be why is the pin there, why are you blowing leaves off the green, why are you removing worm casts etc etc because that’s why I’ve walked off here with a 12
