Yes! 2 point work is where it's at. So many times I have people asking me to help them learn to sit the canter better and I immediately have them up in 2 point working g on their leg strength a few have gotten irritated with me saying they were not here to learn a jumping position but quite the opposite. I have to tell them they MUST work on their leg and core strength to be able to sit better. Doesn't matter if your riding in and english saddle, western saddle, endurance saddle or bareback! If you don't work on yourself your horse pays the price unfortunately.
    Thanks for the video!

What exercises would you suggest to strengthen legs and core muscles to prepare for when I do finally get to start taking lessons again? My horses are too young right now to ride, but I want to be as ready as I possibly can be once I can start riding again!
I used to only ever trail ride, but I want to start training for more than just bomb proofing and trail riding so I know I'm going to need to better myself first! Any help and tips are appreciated! :D

Oh how I love this chick. When she screeches "stop gripping with your knees, put your legs on" (about 1.46 into the video) I can't help but chuckle. One because she sounds so Aussie (and love it) and also because it sounds familiar from my pony club days. And by using 2 point to help with getting the correct position for your knee and therefore not gripping is a lightbulb moment. Thank you. 😀👏🏻

A lot of people don't know that the gait of a horse mimics the gate of normal human walking. It not only is fun, but it is good for depression, PTSD, core strength, balance, and the rebuilding of muscles, and even helps with muscle memory. Because I do have the ability to walk a little bit which makes me extremely lucky, I should be able to use equine therapy to strengthen muscles, and regain balance. I topple over at least 2 times a month, and my last oops I fell into a display cabinet in my home ans it fell over on me and all my crystal that was on it got broken. 30 years of collecting gone from 1 fall.
I am looking for a horse to lease so I can stop renting by the hour, and have more freedom on what I want to do rather it be trail riding or going to the ring to work on skills, I just hope I can afford it. Oy. Wish I had kept my horse when I moved back from Ohio, but boarding a draft horse is way expensive, and the mare we had wasn't mine, but I did also have a cute grey dapple mule who I got to break myself, that was fun.

I have been doing this without knowing how fantastic it is! My little quarter horse has an enormous canter so the only way I could ride it was in a two point position. Eventually, I started sitting and going back to two-point. I was doing the right thing and didn’t even know it! 🥳 I do not bounce in the canter because of it.

So I just came on here to say THANK YOUUUUUUU. So much in the equation ring i see SOOOOO much instructors saying arch your back and seeing these kids Jam their heels so far down their lower leg is out in front of them or their upper body is so far forward their lower leg is wayyyy under them from where it should be.
A friend of mind asked me for advice I said well do some leg relaxing techniques at the walk drop your stirrups and take your knees away from the saddle do bicycle legs rotate your legs your ankles both directions feel but of your seat bones when you pick your stirrups back up check in with yourself ask yourself am i relaxed is my thigh relaxed is my knee pinching can i feel my seat bones evenly
And she sent me a video in her lesson and her instructor is yelling at her sayinf she has a hunched back to pull her shoulders back and arch her back and im like noooooooooooo dont do that your gonna turn into one of those weebles wabble but fall down itll throw you off balance. Instead of saying bring your shoulders back and arch your back say lift your chest up relax your shoulders and push your belly button into your spine and the best way to learn this is at the trot and have your instruct place their hand on your back to feel you basically lift with your core. I feel like this is a lost method in a lot of disaplines its not taught as commonly over in the states at all. And i rode with a rider who worked for mark Phillips so i was lucky enough to get several months of hands on experience from some of the best equestrians ive idolized since i was a kid and it workksssss i was such a tense rider and still can be but as long as i think relax I follow so much easily.
I just shared this video with her to show her im not the only one who teaches this with i wish she wasnt 2 hours away because i wanna help her but her trainers methods are sooooo different.

Hii! I am a young rider. I have been trying my hardest, giving out all my strength on the horse to not bounce. The horse i am riding is a nervous one and speeds up with just a mere mistake of mine. He is uncomfortable to the sensations of the reins. As i have been trying my hardest, thinking about him more than myself, i always leaned forward on the horse to not bounce harshly on his back. This video has enabled me to look at all of my riding experiences from a different point. Thank you for that. I am now looking forward to learn and get inspired from you. Love you so much! As a para equestrian my legs are obviously a bit weaker so I use elastics to keep my feet in the stirrups. Lately I’ve been noticing when I’m cantering I’ve become lazy and have started lifting my feet up as if I’m riding stirrupless.. I think I do this because I can’t lose my stirrups so it just feels natural.

OMG - That makes sooo much sense! Amazing video instruction on canter work. In steps 3 and 4 I have 3 questions: 1. How do you prevent the lazy horse or the one that ‘struggles a bit’ from falling back into trot when in 2-point - whip? Spur? Body? 2. How do you prevent same horse from falling back into trot when you sit back down in the saddle? 3. At about the 15:00 minute mark you mentioned that you have a good connection with Gee (you look amazing by the way!!) How ARE you connected - with reins? Legs? Body? Or all of the above? Thank you so very much for this video Alicia - I always wondered how you increase the canter energy from working/medium to collected if you are already driving with your seat in the working paces.

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  3 года назад +1

Hey Mimi! AMAZING questions, go you! Okay so overall while reading your questions I get the sense that your horse may not be travelling on its own in the canter, so first step is to work on that, when you ask the horse to canter try to either go direct to 2 point or sit still and don't drive the horse with your seat or hold your leg on, then the horse will either keep travelling, or drop back. When the horse drops back immediately send the horse forward and use a quick aid that sends the horse more forward than what you need, then go back to being passive with your forward aid. Repeat if the horse drops again. The goal is to teach the horse to travel without your help! It takes self discipline from you as the rider to not nag and training with the horse. When in 2 point you can use your leg like usual (light aid then quicker follow up if no response).
When Alicia mentions good connection she is talking about connected into the bridle, think of the training scale! Let me know if this helps 🤩

ok wow this is something i never realized! Usually I ride 5 gaited horses that i more or less canter exclusively in a 2 point position with maybe a few strides seated if they are really stable in the 3-beat. I got back on a 3 gaited horse some days ago after quite a long while and my seat was so much better in canter! Good to know how I managed to achieve that as I was pretty baffled. I expected to be really bad at sitting trot and canter as I hadn‘t done it in a while… Love all the insight you give into biomechanics and focused exercises for certain parts of riding!

I use your videos as background noise alot or to show my mom to help her riding(not that I never use these to improve myself!) and today Im making a list of muscle builder brands, biotin brands, and coolers for my horse. Im doing this to see price differences, shipping times, and effectiveness across the board! My gelding and I have improved together so much with alot of help from you and Natasha! We can't thank you enough, really, I would hug you both if I wasn't across the planet from you

Hello, and I’m so happy that I found your content. I have just started learning to ride, I’ve had about five lessons so far and I’m loving it. The main challenge I have is the rising trot and canter. We are doing cantering tomorrow on the beach and I will watch this video again before I leave for my lesson and incorporate the techniques that you are teaching. Thank you so much.

We are in lockdown and so pretty much restricted to riding at home. Fortunately I have an arena and so always looking at ways to make it interesting for me & my horse. Gave the rising canter a go today and wow it was so relaxing cantering around in that position. Better than 2 point as I found my horse was not thinking it was time to go! Thanks so much.

My favourite video was definitely the how not to bounce in sitting trot as I want to start doing more complicated trot work in sitting trot!

That was amazing!! As a someone who rode jumpers my whole like then switched to dressage, I always applied standing in my stirrups in both disciplines, especially at the beginning of the ride to stretch all the leg muscles and put all my weight down in my heels and make my leg longer. It's brilliant and very logical! But I've NEVER heard a dressage trainer...EVER tell someone to do this but I think it's a super effective way to build up a full long legged contact correctly. One thing I thought you may say is remove the stirrups and even go on the lunge to really work on the seat seat seat SEAT and leg. I know they leg can creep on their own but that's why the trainer is there!! To SCREAM! LOL I did A LOT of no stirrup work when I first got my FEI boy because he had HUGE gaits and I found this helped me so much, especially at the Canter, as I was transitioning to a deeper seat from a more forward, a bit a head of the vertical or even 2 point at times in the jumper ring. And posting with no stirrups or even 2 point is not only muscle building but character building because at the beginning you want to cry the whole time!!! lol
AMAZING VIDEO!!! You're awesome and your horse is stunning!!
