Sitting The Trot | How To Move Your Seat

- Sitting The Trot | How To Move Your Seat. In this video, I will show you how I move my seat/pelvis when I'm working in sitting trot. When I was taught how to sit the trot I was continuously told to sit still but this is not the truth. If you try to sit still you will end up bouncing even more. You must allow your body to move with the horses' movement and that gives the ILLUSION that you are sitting still. I show you how my pelvis moves when I sit trot and I give you 3 sitting trot tips. This will show how to do sitting trot for beginners and will show you how to sit the trot without bouncing.
I hope it helps you as it helped me and no laughing at my "on the ground" part of the video 😆!

• Sitting The Trot | How...
Sitting trot was the hardest thing I have ever taught myself to do! I hope this video helps you and I would love it if you let me know whether the tips worked for you. Thank you for watching.
This lesson is absolutely!!! I appreciate!!!
Thank you ☺️
So you do summer clinics? I’d like to fly over and attend a camp, if one’s available.
Best teacher ever
Thank you for these videos! I am a complete beginner at riding and I feel like I’m getting more information from your videos than from my actual coach.
I've been riding for 13 years, more than half my life. I've taken years of hunter/jumper AND dressage lessons, and not one instructor ever taught me how to sit the trot. I even thought I was doing it right, because no instructor ever told me otherwise, and that it was just supposed to be that jolting. After watching your video and practicing it on just a handful of rides, I feel relatively competent at sitting trot - not perfect, but lightyears better than before. You are an exceptional teacher, Josie. Thank you for doing what you do!
I’m so glad it helped you 🙂
Holding this thought close now: “give yourself permission to be a beginner”. Thank you!
You are welcome 😊
Thank you!! I really struggle with this and feel guilty bouncing on my horse's back whenever I attempt this.. I'll give your tips a try :)
I hope it helps. Try not to feel guilty as we all have to learn somewhere. I alway think that I give my horses a kind and loving home where they want for nothing so I’m sure they don’t mind helping me become a better rider 😊
I’ve been checking out how to do this on different videos and your explanation is the first that I have actually understood. Can’t wait to try this again now.
I'm glad it helped! I would love to hear how you go with it Jennifer. Just remember, it takes a while to learn new things and build habits so be kind to yourself while your learning it.🙂
this is brilliant! "when we move in time with them we give the illusion we are not moving and sitting still". this changed everything for me.
It changed everything for me too Gabrielle. I'm so glad. 😊
As a new rider, I watched this video 4 weeks ago, employed the technique, & it has had a tremendous impact for both, horse & I. We’ve been working every week, & have had wonderful success in the last 4 weeks! They are truly helpful, & jam packed with wisdom, & clear instruction. Thank you so much…!!! 🌺😊
You have made my day. Thank you for letting me know I’m helping ☺️
@@BasicHorseTraining I hope others find you, & follow your instructions, & report back! 🌺 The content you make is very concise, & helpful. Keep up the great instructions, you’ve made a impactful difference in our riding journey. My trainer was VERY IMPRESSED by my new trot skills…all thanks to you. 🌺♥️
Thank you! It's so generous of you to put your professional knowledge online essentially for free. I learned sitting trot quite differently and this was so helpful
I’m so glad it helped. I tried everything to learn to sit trot but could never do it. I taught myself this way and hoped that it would help others. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it ☺️
@@BasicHorseTraining how long di it take before you finally learned? I feel so goofy because even after 3 years I can't
Please don’t feel goofy. I think it took me 10 + years to feel comfortable sit trotting
I was almost ready to give up riding and sell my horse and then I found your channel and it’s given me hope. I am stripping my riding right back to basics and really looking forward to trying out some of your tips.
Oh, Ashley please don't give up. Horses are so good for our souls. I hope that my videos help you. Please feel free to email me josie@basichorsetraining with any issues you are stuck with, any frustrations you have or anything that doesn't make sense. I will do my best to help you. 💗
I CANNOT thank you enough!! I am a jumper, we took out our stirrups a few days ago in a lesson and I really got to put this into practice. I got compliments on my seat and got my horse to move nicely, he’s not the most sensitive, so that felt awesome! Your explanation gave me my aha moment! Thank you so much! 😁
Oh that’s fabulous. Your feedback has just made my day ☺️
Beginner rider… the ground example was a great visual too! 💡
Glad you liked it!
This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much I like how you actually showed us the way you move in the saddle on the ground! I’m a beginner with weekly lessons and this helped a lot!
You're so welcome! Weekly lessons are the bomb!! 🙂
AMAZING! My last few rides ended up with frustration bcos it felt so hard for me to do the sitting trot even after watching some videos. But after last night watching this, today i tried to FEEL that right-left diagonal movement and voila! ..at the end of the practice my coach ask me to canter! Achievement unlocked! Thank you so much for your explanations that’s actually make sense! 🙏🏻
Fantastic Galuh!! This has made my day! 😊
Ahh this is exciting to read! I’ve just now started to practice my sitting trot and after flopping around like a sack of potatoes, comments like this give me hope 🙏🏻
Years ago an instructor had our horse club group learn belly dance hip movements, which happen to be the same movements in sit trot/western amble. It was easier for us pre-teen girls to get into our heads, and made the motion feel more natural.
I was thinking “ belly dancing” as she described the motion in detail!
This is literally the best explained video ever! I’m obsessed with watching this video I have a lesson later today and I’m trying to work on my sitting trot so I’m going to try this!
Thank you Serena I’m glad you liked it. I would love to hear how you go with trying the exercises out 😊
@@BasicHorseTraining I tried sitting trot with the information from this video and it changed everything! It’s sooo much easier then what I was trying to do before thank you!
Oh that is so fantastic I am so glad it helped. You have made my day 💝
@@BasicHorseTraining your absolutely amazing and I know I’m going to learn so much from ur channel! Hope you have an amazing day!
I remember watching this when I had a lot of trouble with sitting trot and canter. Now it feels like a literal swing, especially with big-gaited horses. Thanks!
That is fantastic. I am so very happy to have been able to help you 🤗
Thanks! This really helped me. Even after one ride I felt improvement.
Just started lessons 3 months ago and i ride terrible, never consistent with either trot (2 point and sitting) so I've been watching tons of youtube videos. Thank goodness i found you, you're the first one who got off your horse to show the movements, plus the green buckle while riding, the breathing tip etc, etc. Please keep making videos and in the meantime I'll bing watch your channel, I'm also subscribed, thank you again for your thorough explanations!!!!!
You are welcome and thank you for the sub 😊
Hard to see your belt buckle in most shots, but you arw clear in expressing and showing the idea anyway! Thanks very much....
This video is fantastic, thankyou so much for sharing! It's really the only explanation that has actually helped my sit-trot and we are finally getting quality steps :)
So glad it helped! Such a good feeling when you start to get some good steps 😆
I love your videos! Especially when you show it on the ground first, it’s so so so helpful to see it that way !
As a guy it is quite wonderful coming to understand that I’ve been practicing this since I was 14. 😂💁🏼♂️
This is a million dollar video! I had countless instructors that each had their own way of teaching sitting trot. ( from youngster to now a senior) I’d say I’m a rusty intermediate rider in everything except the sitting trot. Watched your video and rode for the first time since. It felt magical, like I was actually moving with the trot! Thank you!
I am so glad it helped you! It’s a fabulous feeling when you get it 😊
The transition from rising trot, to sitting trot, to walk, is where I’m now having difficulty. If the horse braces going into walk, (not walking immediately) how do you stay relaxed to sit trot as I’m bracing my body for a firmer whoah.
This is great advice. I really struggle with my sitting trot, i am all over the place. Many private hours and I was never told I had to do anything, just sit back! I will definitely try all these and see how it works for me, thank you !
I’m hoping it is as miraculous for you as it was for me 🤞🤞. Remember you will get it then lose it then get it. 😊
My mount insisted I send you his gratitude 4 this vid (also, he no longer calls me "Bouncy"). 😉
Thank you 😁👍
Brilliant! Thank you Josie! Can’t wait to give it a go!🤗
Thank you Catherine. I would love to hear how you go 😊
Thank you.... I need to try it next Tuesday
Funny you talked about how the ankle must flex- the ONLY way I could sit trot in the beginning was with no stirrups, doing ankle circles- otherwise I would tense up and start gripping. But the ankle circles eventually got my focus off of gripping, AND helped me learn how to flex the ankle. It took a long time for me to be able to sit WITH stirrups, haha, but I got there!
Greta videos, you are the best!
Yep! You need to balance and not grip. It's a hard lesson to learn ... now I'm going to go out and see if I can circle my ankles without stirrups so thank you for the tip 😊.
Thank you for such a helpful lesson. Can’t wait to get to and try these tips!
Reminds me of Michael Jackson moves right ??? 😄 thank you for this seriously I NEEDED to see it on the ground like you're showing us... I've had horses for 14 years and NO ONE has shown this to me.. THANK YOU and my horses thank you 💯💯🐎🐎🐎🐎💖💖💖💖
I hope it helps allison! Please come back and let me know 🙏
You're the best instructor I've ever come across, your videos are so detailed and helpful especially the visual simulation, thank you Jessi 🙏🏻
Thankyou for making sense! This is an excellent lesson, and I’m headed to the barn right now to work on this!
As a novice rider this is very helpful! I look forward to putting this advice to good use!
Best vídeo on sitting Trot, Will try. Great explaining with the belt
Thank you again for these extremely helpful videos! And I will continue to watch them. Keep being awesome we need more people like you! ❤
Love your comments about slightly weighting the stirrups n ankles flexing absorbing some of the shock. My instructor says whit your saying. I need to get a old of the sitting trot so I can ask properly for canter departs. Ta lady.
Very informative and useful too ,pl upload such more videos, thanks
Thank you so much! Im preparing for one of my jumping shows and i really wanted to have a better riding seat. This really helped!💖
Wonderful explanation ... I'm a visual learner as well. Your videos help me so much ... thank you 🙂 I also love seeing the difference in Rebel as you ride showing us how to and how not to ... that's another good illustration of how important our own tone and going with our horses are.
I've watched so many vids on this topic and you are the only one that covers the entire body's jobs. Especially pushing down through the feet. Keeping the arms soft is another one otherwise they bounce. So much thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I have seen like 5 videos and this is the only one that seems to explain it well.
This is a wonderfully-done teaching video, thank you so much!!
I have just watched your sit trot video from a year ago I think it was,.amazing description and teaching..I was totally entertained when you showed examples of incorrect riding positions you were so funny. All power to you Josie.xx
Thank you Mel 🤗
Really great Teacher and I've seen multiple videos but the way you actually explain each thing is exactly what I'm thinking every question I found you answered in great sequence. and use of the belt buckle as a visual aid is really great.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you soooooo much!!!!!! This is completely life changing, for us and as well as for the horse!
You are welcome. I'm glad it helped. 😊
can't wait to try, cause i have such a hard time doing the sitting trot with one of my horses, thanks so much
I hope it help you 😊
BEST description of learning sitting trot I have ever seen!!
Thank you 🙂
This is my favorite video ever
Thank you so much. The most useful I’ve seen so far for sitting trot
Glad it was helpful!
i've seen countless videos by professionals and non-professionals. this is the best one!
Thank you so much Lisa. 😊
This was so helpful! I have my first show in a day and we will be sitting the trot, a lot! I am surely one of those people who get super stiff. Thank you again🙂
Great video Josie thank you so much! Super easy to understand 👍 I will definitely be trying this tomorrow! You’re a great teacher Josie! I’ve learnt so much from watching your videos! They keep popping up on my feed and it’s seems to be exactly the thing I need at the time! Very clever. :) thanks again! Xxx
I'm so glad you are enjoying them and they are popping up in a timely manner 🤗
Thank you so much for the explanation 👏👏👏 it helps a lot!
You're very welcome!
I love this piece of advice. Neither my teachers ever told me this. Thanks a Lot!
I hope it helps Paola 🙂
This helped me so much, I always had trouble with it, but yesterday it went so great, I wasnt bouncing around anymore, thank you x Only when my pony was trotting as fast as the others were cantering hahahah, that is just not sitable.
Thank you so much !This is so helpful!!
Need to start doing to hip exercises. Makes so much sense now. 🙏🏻🤩
I hope it helps you 🙂
Such a pitty that phones dont have volume regulaters😂thx for this video! Fantastic! Helko from Portugal.
Was I a bit loud 📣. Sorry 😆. Hello from South Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Good job on teaching this
Love this as you break down the movements completely. ❤
I’m glad you like it 😊
Love this ❤️
Love how you said sorry to your horse. ❤️
They are such forgiving creatures ♥️
Thank you so much for this excellent video. I have shared this with my daughter and I will be using this with my riding students. Absolutely brilliant!
You are welcome. I’m glad you liked it 😊
Thanks for showing the right/left of the hips bit on the ground!
Your welcome 🙂
You are awesome! Can't wait to try your tips, thank you!
You are so welcome!🙂
the visual representation helped me so much! i missed all our lessons on sitting tror and were now onto canter, adeguate spacing and control in canter (around other horses and on a circle) so i would feel quite weird asking about it now with all the other people getting it and it being almost 5 years since i started taking lessons
and also a reason ive been struggling so much with it is because my techer, when i asked about it just said lean back more, which threw me off balance so much making it even harder to sit in the saddle.
I'm such a visual and auditory learner. Your word to word explanation is expensive!
Thanks for the tips as an older beginner 👍 big love from the UK
😘
Thank you so much for this video! It was extremely helpful! Keep these fabulous videos coming, please!
I'm glad you are enjoying them. Thank you for letting me know. 😊
I’m really enjoying your videos Josie & learning a lot! Thank you.

I like your video it will help me with my horse Nannette
Great video, thank you :-) The green dot on your belt buckle and learning the movement on the ground as well as the horse made it easier to understand.

I just found your videos and wow... The best I have seen till now referring sitting the trot. Thank you so much 😍. I am a beginner with 49 years and I have so much to learn. Now I will look all your other videos. Thanks 👍👍👍.
I hope you find them all helpful Anett 😊
Oh yes, the new video referring half halt is also great. Greetings from Germany 😊
This is super helpful!!!
I’m glad you find it helpful 🙂
Hello, I so needed to see this video for me to truly understand English style of riding. I come from a Western style background. I had my second lesson this past Monday and it was wayyyyyyyyy better than my first. I have not been on a horse in a long time and now learning how to balance myself on an English saddle. Wow!
Anyways, thank you for this informative video. I will now subscribe and watch every video that you will make.
Welcome. 🙂
Thank you! So clear and useful!!
Glad it was helpful!
Your lessons help me a lot. 🙏 Thank you.
Thank you for letting me know I appreciate it 😊
Great teaching
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Great video. Watched lots of videos on sitting trot and none explained so clearly. I have asked the question if it saw a sort of side to side movement as you have explained with no real answer. Your video has proved to me I have been doing it right and why changing to just forward up does not feel right. Thanks
Trust your intuition Tanya 🙂
Very good. Clearly explaining do's and how's--excellent. Thank you!
Your welcome 😊
This video is so helpful thank you. I used to bounce so much but now my sitting trot is much better
So glad it helped you. 😊
Thank you for the excellent information 🙏
You are welcome 🙂
You’re genuinely an awesome teacher
Thank you Jonathan 🙂
Best video explained so good thanks a lot
You are most welcome 🙂
What a fab way you have of explaining and demonstrating the sit trot. I have struggled so much with this on my very bouncy Friesian. He tries so hard to keep trotting but everytime I bounce, he walks as it is uncomfortable for him. With your help and lots of practice I'm sure I will do him justice and crack this. Thank you.
You are very welcome Sadie 🙂
I’d love to know if you’ve been able to progress with your sitting trot.
Thank you!! Very well explained 💫✨☺️🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you....very helpful!
Your welcome 🙂
Great tutorial. Thank you
Your welcome. I'm glad you liked it.
This is so so handy! So happy I just discovered your channel
I’m so glad you find the videos helpful. Thanks for commenting 😊
