@Michelle - 👍 So well said! The only thing I would like to add is that not only is Alicia helping so many riders - but she is equally helping the horses ♥️🐎♥️. So many riders use pressure with almost no release, but also, hopefully will reduce the amount of riders kicking (incessantly) horses or even worse, the 'dinosaurs' who still use a crop because they have failed to help their horse understand what they're asking for! Bless you for all of this wonderful education.

Your excitement is catchy. It really gives me the energy to give everything a try and this banana thing really works. I have just cantered at a jump because I felt I could control the request to canter and my turns in canter so much better now. Our canter stride is also far more controlled and less flat, it is so comfortable. Thank you and please don’t stop sharing. Your style makes you so relatable especially for me as a less experienced person. It’s all in the details.

Such an important lesson for anyone dealing with an OTTB. They are so used to racing & training in just one direction that they really need help & strength to help them from leaning in.

    • @YourRidingSuccess

Absolutely! And even horses that are not OTTB can be one sided and we need to work on suppleness to ensure they are even on both reins.

This is such a critical component to dressage and one that I think is overlooked with the focus more on the hands or the legs, and the seat aid can be such a subtle aid yet so important and so effective. Thank you again for providing a vid focused on this topic as it is a building block that cannot be underestimated.

Alicia, thank you for the amazing video these last few weeks. Your explanations are so well articulated and perfect elementary demonstrations. You are systematically providing a college level course on dressage theory via this platform. All of my equine career has been with heavy hitches and reining/cow horses. Past 4 years my training interest has diverted to dressage with a very very athletic draft. That being said, I live and breath training and your videos will strike a thought about something I am working through, even with my hitch horses, like no one else on this platform. You are a blessing to so many working regularly without a coach.

Waou another epiphany ..i was confused with the banana but when you've described the distribution of the weight and our job is to somewhat compensate... it was like " but of course" ! it's like a system of "balance" if he leans on one side , the rider needs to "slightly compensate" on the other side for the equilibrium .. or perhaps i am getting it all wrong as i am a little lost with the "hole" analogy and the banana 🤔 You're a born teacher Alicia and a delightful one : breaking it down this way , it's brillant

@@YourRidingSuccess There have been a lot of really helpful videos on this channel through the years, and I think the new content is also going to help a lot of people with both their riding and their horsekeeping. I'd love to hear your thoughts on dealing with riding fear. However I think my very favourite video has to be the announcement of the big contest. A lot of people struggle to afford to be able to ride, or don't have access in their area to the quality of horse/instructor they want. Not only do I believe this channel should and can reach a million subscribers, but if we can do it together, there's one person on this earth whose riding dream will come true. I think that's so exciting and moving. I hope they'll let us see some of their journey but even if they don't, just knowing that someone out there will be so lucky and happy and excited makes me happy. I'm so excited for whoever it is.
If I have to pick one of the videos of normal content, then I'll go with Horse Banana. It's such a helpful and simple way to improve technical skill and understanding. I'm excited to give it a try next ride. I tend to fuss too much with my hands, but horses have always responded really well to my intent and my weight. My dream is to be one of those riders with no bridle and no stirrups, haha :P

I’m a new older rider (I won’t mention my age and I could sort of follow along but I think the banana and what it represents could’ve been better described at the f beginning is as some times you have it flat and somethings up. You also say to sit to the the inside again as a beginner I’m not sure I follower, do mean sit more heavily to one side or to physically move your butt to the other side of the saddle. Maybe sitting on a saddle that’s not on a horse may have helped us novices a bit more. I’ll watch again on a few more months and maybe it’ll make more sense .

Excellent explanation as always, my horse leans on the outside rein going to the left, she puts all her weight on this rein and try's to bend her head to the left to much, the only thing i can do is is give her a light rein so it does not deaden my arm, any suggestion or maybe a video on this, thanks 😁 this does improve as the lesson progresses but any suppling exercise advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi there! good question, what this means is the horse is leaning more heavy on the right shoulder, so you may need to use some counter flexion when going to the left so you essentially straighten out the horse. Watch this Mowgley playlist and especially watch the early work in the round yard and then the work in the arena and all through these videos it shows you how to supple a horse that is not even (Mowgley also looks too much left and leans a bit right shoulder) ruclips.net/p/PLilNDMqFJS_CVtqt5n2YyQRerenQr-XKQ

I’m so excited just listening to you. One question. Where do I sit when my horse falls out when catering a circle.

Hi Peter, when cantering you need to sit to the inside and if the horse is falling out that means the horses outside shoulder is not upright and in balance. Try checking if the horses head is in the middle of its chest and all 4 feet have the same weight.

    Dear Alicia
Thank you so much for the banana analogy. So kind and thoughtful xxx I have had the privilege of riding a horse in half pass... but he did it because he had been trained and for him the cue was in our arena position!! When I tried without that cue, to see if I could initiate the move myself it was unclear where I should apply my leg. Trainer couldn't desctibe it either as was from another discipline but had taught himself these 'add ons'. I was so grateful for the experience I didn't want to be too demanding. As one of your on-line students I've noticed how you, and Natasha before you, have been willing to be so precise and generous. So I wondered if yku would possibly consider adding in the formal language too??? Such as apply the leg in the direction of desired travel. So for example a bend to the left of the horse (banana) you sit in the hole (?) with both horse and rider rib cage open on the right but you apply pressire with the left leg to move to the right and make no leg contact with the right leg (the outside leg??) in crossing the arena in half pass from left to right.... Is that correct???
Just checking in to ensure I've understood you correctly...!!!???
    Thank you soooooo much
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
