What Would It Take to Bring this OBS Truck Back To Life?

- Have you ever driven past an abandoned vehicle that you like, and wondered what it might take to fix it up and make it look great again? I do it all the time! We see Barret Jackson and MECUM auctions with tons of cars selling for cheap and expensive money... So what I decided to to is put in my 2 cents on this abandoned 94 OBS truck, go through the vehicles systems, and give an estimate on what I think it'll cost to resurrect if from a DIY perspective, as well as what it might take if you outsourced all the expenses. Sometimes a flip isn't worth it, sometimes the car is worth more than you think! watch and comment, let me know what you think!

THis one, I had my hands tied a little.... IT was a repo, was locked and I couldnt get in it or under the hood... alot of "guestimating" based off experience.
Reminds me of that beautiful blue Senior Silverado you did on Trucks. I’ve watched that complete series numerous times and hope it’ll someday help me make my 93 Chevy’s paint look good. Hopefully I’ll get to enjoy your work when I pick up my Wimbledon white F100 from Derek.
A grand to $1500. Drop the tank and get a new fuel pump installed (prob hasn't been done before) ~$150. Fingers crossed not a bunch of rodent damage to wires (I was remarkably lucky here). Really inspect the brake lines for pinholes mine were all shot (prebent set ~$200). Brake pads all around ($110). Plugs, wires, full fluid (oil, coolant, trans) ~$400. Set of tires ~$700 These numbers shouldn't be too optimistic (I brought an old 1995 back to life for jackassing around in last fall) and it was somewhere around that. I'm definitely not a painter (though your segments on TV encouraged me to try back in the day, painted a couple work trucks that still look pretty okay). Though certainly discounting labor from it all.
This makes me wish I could actually make some progress on my '51 Mercedes 170S, but it's missing a drivetrain and the rear axle was sold out of it without my knowledge after I had purchased it 🤦♂️ that's killes my mood to do anything with it for these last few years.
Used to watch you on tv years ago and recently found you again through the Vice Grip Garage video. Can't wait to see more.
THanks man!
I wouldn't mind having that Impala SS next to the truck.
I like the Impala SS next to it better! Great episode Kevin!
I can tell you been hanging with Derek. LOL. That job on the F100 was wow.
What gave it away.... wabble pops! LOL!
Gotta wet that back neck! lol@@paintucation
I have a 94 c3500 crew cab that the clear coat is flaking all over it and look terrible but the truck is totally dent and rust free. It’s a real shame because the truck runs and drives like new.
I have a 97 the clear was doing the same. I got the wipe on clear from VGG for $125 plus shipping and am very pleased with how it turned out. Just scuffed it before and cleaned with vax and grease remover before I applied the coating.
I agree KT. Damage under the front. 😮. I would have looked for a bed in better shape. Filter on the front seat was not a good sign either. My wife has a 99 Tahoe. Body good. But I had that white paint that went to crap. That paint would have to go to the metal. I worked in a body shop for a couple years. She just thinks a quick scuff and paint. Nope. 😅
The Impala SS right next to you is waaayyyy more interesting 😂😂😂😂😂
You can’t tough a late obs for 1800 in SoCal, a total beat pos is 7k minim
Strip it down to metal kevin. Work youre way up.
first rule of thumb see if its got a clear title if not walk away
Must be nice to be down south where these are a dime a dozen.
I actually couldnt beleive how cheap I found them on FB Marketplace...
Honestly I've been a viewer since trucks days. I learned about your RUclips channel because of vice grip garage.
Thanks man!
Great starting point and you can do it in stages. Love the video! Thanks KT
Should AMD adoptatruck program commence? Just asking for a friend... :)
Oh! Lets see the SS next to ya.
It's coming!!
I don't think Kevin has paid a mechanic in a while. Two weeks ago I was quoted $1000 for a power steering pump. and $200 just for one tie rod end. That is not a dealer. Lucky I can do this work Power steering pump $115, tie rod end $24. These older GM products do have dirt cheap parts.
Yikes!!!! I may need to do a little more snooping on the next one... :O
I think this is a great project, I've restored a few GMT800 trucks with the grandkids...imo affordable and fun like the old days of hot rodding.
NW Ohio DIY trucks are way over priced here.
We need to paint my 1999 5.3 LS shortbed step side. interior is all brand new. No body work needed. It's red, just clear coat in just a couple small spots. I want it done Candy Apple Red. Let's do it on both of our channels. It was my dad's, he passed in 2020, a tribute to dad.
Love your channel I’ve learned a lot Hope you and Kevin can work a deal
@@rickhughes9385 thank you, glad our videos help. It would be awesome to learn from Kevin in person. We would definitely put it on our channel also and brag on how awesome Kevin is.
I have a '95 2 door Tahoe 4x4 love it.
The Impala next to the truck would make a nice project.
The OBS is cool and all, but I'm more interested in the Impala SS next to it :)
You and Derek should pick this truck up and make it a street screamer short box truck.
I'm lobbying hard for it! LOL!
@@paintucation I would even help but I don't have the cash to get down there. Now if you could find a 78 Lil Red Express truck and swap in a newer hemi engine. That would be a kicking project
i think that truck would look mean in some black single stage , would also bring that paintjob cost down by 90% haha (if tractor paint) but then probs another 90hrs buffing it hahaa
I have loved and owned gmt 400 obs trucks for decades. Easy to work on, parts are everywhere.
Thats at least a 97... 94 had squared dash, 95 and 96 had lower side on passenger side dash but 97-99 had dash like this truck. Ive owned 99 Suburban 140k miles, 98 Suburban 215k miles, 96 Tahoe 214k miles, 96 GMC Sierra 4x4 is my current truck with 173k miles and 98 Silverado at 140k miles, 05 GMC Sierra Crew Cab at 180k miles, and several mid 80's silverado 2wd long bed C10 trucks... like 6 over the years... all very nice ones
Have been through the Vortec spider injection nightmare and fuel regulator nightmare too
These are amazing trucks!!! Love them... got mine after much prayer God led me to a deal... $1700 @170k miles but it was incredibly hard to find any under $4k that were under 200k miles and most were full of little issues unlike mine was owned by rich people andbthey fixed anything itt needed except catalytic converter ill need soon!!!
Omg I’ve never been so happy. I watched you on TV all the time.
Man I would love, love, love if you could do a classic OBS build (Tahoe/gmt400) or even a f150 10gen!
You are the best bro!!!
This is not a 1994 truck.I have 94 extended cab short bed that I bought new with a tickle over 200k miles.Problem at how much it cost to fix. That is YOUR area.Price this in Commiefornia(where I live) and it would Probably be a huge difference.
I would say add about 30%. I spent $30 dollars on 1 pack of disposal gloves, 1 can brake cleaner, 1 can PB blaster, 1 can of PB lubricant. Supplies are getting out of hand.
Keven, I have a 1968 c10 that’s been in my family since 1970. I want to get it back to its original saddle paint. It’s pretty straight and 99% rust free. I hate body work and sanding and although I could paint, I’d rather have a great body/paint person do that part. I’m serious when I ask, would you take a project like that?
Even if you're not interested in working on my car I would be immensely appreciative of your evaluation of my car.
My man Kevin always enjoyed watching your shows subscribed!
I prefer my "cat eyes" 2004 Chevy, lol. The question is, did you buy that rig?
I like your idea here. Not a new 😢 I, think you will get views if you follow through with it. Doubt, you have the time, though. I've been watching you for years!
Where is this lot?
so are you gonna do that truck, or what? I mean, should I be looking out for videos of this build? I would like a channel, yes another resto channel, but that truly uses typically available cars, and with no budget to speak of, and done with a kevin tets flair and focus on paint and the lot like that. I would watch it. when you gonna start the build?
Thinking maybe grab some low income assistance being supplied by the US govt to keep cost down.
Then cost only $20,000 !!! ;-)
You could take it to the scrapyard and get maybe 300 for it
Would you be interested in working on a viewer's car?
Come to Ga I got 94 5.7 2 wheel drive stepside I sale you
That truck would be perfect for a SS454 clone.
Talk to us about Impala on Passenger side of Truck
Good video thanks for sharing great comparison for which way to go
Thats a rather clean looking obs kinda surprised it was a repo being its an older truck but with the economy the way its been doesnt surprise me to much that someone slacked on their truck payments.. Kevin that was an awesome breakdown of all the work that truck could use/needs aswell as paint costs both from a diy perspective & the just send it to a shop to complete all of the work. Kinda wild how much of a price difference there is basically with all the labor hours aswell as the shops price increases on parts & materials.. Crazy that its about double the costs between doing it yourself & just paying a shop to do it all for you. Id much rather do it myself an possibly go a bit further with the mechanical parts making sure the drive train, brakes, fuel lines/fuel system, cooling system & engine tuneup/upgrades while still staying way below the bodyshop/bodywork cost..
Id really like to see alot more & hear the story about that sweet mid 90's black impala ss thats sitting beside that obs..
I almost bought one of these trucks new back in the day.
Please please do a series on an obs. From a fellow red seal tech and chevy addict
That neighboring SS wants you to buy it. It already gave you the ole “credit card” 😂. My buddy had a ‘94 C1500 slicked up in the same color as this one. Those tans and other various browns are beautiful done well on the right rigs.
Enjoying your content Kevin, having watched you on TV over the years. I really like this nittier grittier stuff without a truckload of new parts and panels like some of those big sponsor shows had. I get it…that was the way back then. That’s why I enjoy Derek and why I think his content exploded in 2020…because a lot of the enthusiasts these days are not the big money folks. It’s us 30- and 40-something’s whose PaPaws had an old Ford “Ranger” like Derek’s and our folks had GM squares and Burbs as their family cars. We’re living on sentiment and familiar sounds and smells.
Agreed!!! That's the reason I love Derek's content as well... its real. The job I had on TV was awesome, but it served the manufacturers, not the audience and ifI can get dialed in I'll be able to do this for the right reasons... to empower and encourage and have a boatload of fun doing it. Thanks man! I appreciate the support. :)
there a gallion of antifreeze on the floot possible head gasket
Great video showing how to save your money. I’m always trying to encourage my viewers to DIY their projects.
Thanks for sharing,
-Spanky
Great review, Thanks!
Thank you for this informative video. I also enjoyed the collaboration that you did with VGG on the F100. If you have a minute, for us DIY'ers, what is your recommendation for a beginner's stud welder/puller kit? I have a door to repair on a 2000 Silverado and would like to try my hand at it. Thank you very much
Best brand is Motorguard... cheapest I found was our friends at HF.... www.harborfreight.com/stud-welder-dent-repair-kit-61433.html?campaignid=12129548629&adsetid=118594666964&product=61433&store=3369&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhtWvBhD9ARIsAOP0GojQpf8UwkjOa3rc1oj8naOdXf4n_qKyFpae8dUk1FLsR9Zoq5vCU1oaAmF4EALw_wcB
That Impala SS next to it is or was a nice car
Those trucks with short bed are rare
if bad paperwork not worth it
Awesome. I love the DIY route better
plus what it cost get a clear title
Can I get that Impala SS!?!?!
95 or 96 Impala SS next to it.
This is my old truck lol wow sad to see where it ended up . Sold it bout year ago to a car lot an looks like sumone didn’t treat here well an lost it sad I’d love to have her back
Daaaang!!!! Its really a solid body... just beat up...were there any mechanical issues?
That is a great video! Lots of people ask me what things would cost. It's so dependent on where you live. I really like the comparison between DIY and paying to have it done. Great video Kevin!
One of my favorite TV personalities! Glad to see Kevin putting out new content. Couldn't believe RUclips popped this video on my feed - the algorithm did well tonight. Great breakdown! Knowing me, I would do it all myself but the numbers would be higher. I'm paranoid and would replace a lot of stuff that is probably okay, i.e. all new brake master cylinder, if one line is rusty - then replace them all, etc. New springs and shocks, etc. That's where my wife would need to reel me in and remind me that we're not rich and have bills to pay. 🤣
One thing I've learned from @vicegripgarage Not everything needs to be replaced.... Thanks for watching!
I'd just like to say that it's great seeing a video description that actually talks about the video instead of being an ad or hashtag spam. Glad I found this channel. Keep on keepin' on, brother!
I'm learnin this RUclips thing.... Trying to give a good value on what I do and we're trying different thngs.... thanks for watching!
Thanks
hey kevin, do u miss the Powernation stuff?
I miss alot of things, but it was time to go and I don't regret leaving. Mostly our team on TRUCKS! those folks became my brothers.
“Cost a little more than you thought”. No truer words have ever been said. 😂
It always does! That said, I really wanna grab this one...
Lets go sir!?
Looks like a ‘98 to me. Those didn’t get a passenger airbag until ‘97 but that steering wheel is a ‘98 only for that body. If that’s the original paint, it looks like Light Pewter Metallic. Hopefully you pick it up! I love those GMT400s too!
I have always loved the old Square bodies but ever since I got my first OBS these have always been my favorite looking Chevy pickup
In years past I used to paint everything. In this day n age once you paint an older rig? You might as,well will it to your kids. Buy em cheap, patch em up drive em a bit maybe n get rid of them.
Thanks for the great video. I appreciate you stepping through the two cost proposals based on your real world research and experience. Very interesting and informative.
Thanks!! Should we do more like this? What vehicles would you like to see?
I would enjoy more videos like this, definitely. I don’t mind the vehicle, it would be more about the explanation of repair process and cost. Thanks again.
Cab corners are alarmingly solid. My gmt 400 has cottage cheese containers.
If someone has the space, tools, and some skill this would be a great project truck!
Don't be discouraged about views right now. Everyone is watching new release video of VGG tonight, then this video later.
Thanks man!! Trying different things I've the next few weeks. 😊
He wasn't wrong. I just watched the latest video on the F100. Now I'm watching yours.
Your collaborations with VGG brought me to your channel. Of course I've watched you for years on the tube though.
I can see it has earned you several thousand new subscribers as well.
That's awesome!
I'll keep watching.
keeping an eye out for you everywhere. bunch of you tennessee guys are on youtube.@@paintucation
The dash on my 66c10 will never crack.
THIS! This was a great video. Need more.
Good information on what to look for and formulate a basic estimate.
"Is that a magnet in your pocket?" " no I'm just happy to see you"
Looks like that could be a really great project
Live long and prosper my friend
What's an obs ?
Old body style. 88-98, I think.
Old Body Style. It came from the old forum days when GM introduced the NBS(New Body Style) at the time, 1999.
it will take more than its worth!
Great info Kevin. No one seems to be touching on the costs (parts & labor) of this hobby. Sometimes you can’t just empty the wallet in every car you “get goo-goo eyes” at. Thanx for sharing.
