    Hey Kevin, I wanted to write and tell you I have a 13 jeep wrangler jk and it came with the factory crinkle finish plastic fender - flares. Everyone hates them cause they fade and if not taken care of chalk up..well I purchased a set of used smooth finished factory body color matched ones. Which to me make it look so much better style wise and looks wise. Yeah everyone always yanks off the factory flares for the flat fender look. The ones I purchased were for a black factory color mine is the white pw 7 code. So I sanded the scratches out and used high-er build spray can primer sanded smooth 2 coats, then purchased the base color in the spray cans and the matching 2K clear that you pull the button on the bottom to add hardner to clearcoat. I'll be honest an experienced eye might can tell but it turned out as good as factory ( color matched, amount of clear applied) or better. The only reason I went that route is I'm in a rental home no shop, no garage nothing. So I needed a fast drying quality clearcoat that's durable. I literally painted and cleared the parts on my covered front porch !. You'd be so proud. I do have alot of paint product experience as I worked at a Dupont and PPG paint supply dealers when I was younger and were the guys painters come to when they don't know right.? Anyway just wanted to tell people sometimes you don't need high dollar spray guns and equipment to get excellent results just use great products to get great results..never be affaid to just do it.

    I cannot wait for the start of this project. I had a 1982 280zx 2+2 silver color. My current wife at the time wanted one herself. Found a similar one just like yours for her. My best friend Patrick from high school started a restoration business about forty minutes north of where I lived. Drove every day in the early morning to weld and restore the Z as I worked the late shift. Came out beautiful like showroom condition. For what ever reason she was on top of my case to get rid of my Z. I got rid of my Z but then I got rid of her after 12 years of marriage. Luckily no children. Remarried and my daughter and I flew to,Roswell Ga to purchase a 1983 280zx 2+2 same color just a year newer. One owner gentlemen that originally lived in Hawaii and was in the military service. I am excited to see the progress and I have to look because I think years ago I purchased your paintucation videos or cds. Good to see you again and with an old friend your 280zx.

    Like you Kevin I owned one of these except mine was an 82 280zx 2+2 in a maroon. Actually inherited it from brother when when he took it off the road for stalling when it got warm. After sitting in my father's yard for the better part of 6 years in the cold CT winters, went out shot some oil down the bores and put a new battery in. Cranked it over to see if it would build oil pressure or for that matter if it would even crank, and it literally fired right up like it had just been sitting overnight! It scared the hell out of me! 7 years prior to this we put on a breand new head which we ported and polished, along with headers and Flowmaster exhaust. We had a Nissan technician loosen up the spring on the Airflow meter door and along with the previous modications really made this engine love to rev! The reason it was taken off the road like I said, was the Ignition Module was bad (common problem) and a $230 replacement allowed it to run like new. After sitting so long, the clutch was frozen to the pressure plate, but after about 20-25 bump starts in gear it finally broke free. These engines really were "bullett proof" if decently maintained, but yes, the achilles heel even almost 30 years ago, was rust. The coolest part about this car was the mini record player (concealed in the hatchback area) about the size of a cigarette pack, that would play the voice prompts through the cars speakers if the door was ajar or the headlights were on. So, for all those people who would say your wasting your time restoring one in that condition, haven't owned one. Truth be told, I'm a "hand's on" guy, but that car would even be too much for me, of course body work was never my forte. My advice ,find another donor car that has a better interior and other bits for around the same price, and that could save you some money in the long run. Good luck!

    I had a 79 280 ZX around 12 years ago. My interior was great the body was great the motor was pretty good & all electrics worked fine, But underneath all the structual stuff was rotted. At the time I found an entire flooring & frame rails kit online for $800 AU (I'm an Ozzy). It started at the 280 size but could be cut down for the smaller models according to their website. I can't remember who they were now. I think they were an English Co. I never got to fix the car & I sold it to a local Z club. I was in the middle of a divorse & lost a lot of stuff. If I remember that Co. I'll let you know. Anyway good luck. They also had photos of all the parts they sell & not just for Z's. You mentioned an English Co. in the vid. Might be the same one. I just typed in floor pans for 280 ZX & it came up top of the list. The shipping cost was pretty cheap too. Cheers Kevin.

    Had a ‘77 that got wrecked, then got a ‘78 that smoked through the valves so not as spunky. Early eighties I paid $1200 apiece. Hard to work on, unibody, tough to find parts, dash cracks make my skin crawl. This is a rungs above restore, I’m subscribed and watching. I’m in if you are. I never drove anything remotely more fun than a straight Z that was running right.

      If you do it you should come out west for a parts car for the sheet metal. There’s 2x2’s that share the undercarriage and uni structure that are going for a song. I don’t know where this car is from but I was a Midwest boy and looking at the rust you have, well, the thin metal and a sandblaster are going to make for a bad day. I got my fingers crossed and I’m going to be watching. If you can get the structure sound, and it looks straight, the motor and trans are bomber. They won’t fight you.

    I know it will be amazing when it's done. I love a Z car. I probably would have passed on that one due to the smell and holes in it, and simply I don't have that attachment to that model - but I absolutely understand it. I spent a lot of time with a early '70's 240z, and it would be my pic of Z-cars to own. But - the cars I'd spend stupid money restoring are odd. Our family had a lot of Opels around '75-'84. I love those things, they're simple, quirky, and unique. I'd want to restore a 1972 Manta Rallye in orange and black. And a copper metallic and black 1969 Kadett Rallye fastback. Those are my dream cars. If I had a lottery garage, it would have weird stuff. Like a restored bronze 1987 Isuzu Trooper 2-door, a black 1984 Dodge Colt GTS Turbo, Custom candy apple green with lace and metal flake 1965 Ford Econoline pickup restomod with V8,auto, and air. But the center piece would be Opels.

    I'm rebuilding two of these suckers, pulled down to the bare chassis and built back up. I'm still on the first one. The frame rails are gone just behind the engine compartment. The floor pans are gone at the sides and front and back, but the middle is good. I've gotten about half the rust repaired. It's not been too bad. Choose your cuts carefully and the metal will be pretty simple in geometry to refabticate.

    Those are just 82-83 tail lights, NA had them too. 81 turbo still had the same tail lights as the NA 79-81. Almost all of those spare wheel wells rust out, it's the corner glass seal. There was a center light that said "turbo" (in script) but those were dealer add-ons, not OEM installed and required relocation of the license plate.

    • @nathanshobe
      @nathanshobe 8 месяцев назад

      Overall I'd say this is certainly savable. I've seen far worse and still considered them. But it's a lot of work. I would have guessed around 1,000 shop hours, and a budget of at least 6k in materials/parts (wrote that before I got to the end, I was close! and wasn't considering the cost of purchase of vehicle). Even though in a "not terrible" condition there's just not an ROI on this vehicle. So restoration is purely love and enjoyment. The six figure action jobs aren't restores, and I think we're still a loooong ways away from restores being six figures.

    I had one of these cars. It was a hand-me-down from my dad. They were great cars when they were new but a complete nightmare to keep on the road once they reached the 10-year mark. And my car spent its entire life in California in a garage. So my car was well taken care of its entire life and never sat undriven for more than a month and it was just one problem after another with it. These model-year Z cars have lots of electrical problems that will drive you crazy trying to diagnose and repair. And if it's not electrical then it's one of the hundreds of vacuum hoses that will either come loose or just crack from old age which will make these cars run terribly if at all. The biggest problem you are going to have is replacing all the plastic parts on these cars because they don't make those parts anymore and it will cost you a small fortune to buy those parts if you can even find them in good condition still. And these model year Z cars have a ton of plastic parts on them that for sure will be extremely brittle after 45 years of use. You will probably break most of the plastic pieces that you try to take off of it when you work on them which is extremely frustrating. You would be better off getting an older 240 Z which has way less plastic to break on you. The 240 Z was built a lot more simple and is way more easy to work on and keep running reliably. The 280 Z model cars were built with way too much electronics and vacuum hoses, especially the later year ones. It doesn't matter how good you take care of these model cars, you will find yourself having to constantly be repairing and replacing parts on those cars and you will be spending a lot of time and money just trying to find good used parts for it because you will have to replace every single piece of plastic on that car and you will never be able to catch up to the amount of parts that you will need because it can take you a very long time to source these parts in good condition. and you have to remember that you will be replacing your cracked 45-year-old plastic parts with non-cracked yet 45-year-old parts so these cars will never be like new again because of the amount of plastic parts that they don't make anymore. Even if you find one that was completely restored to look like it was brand new again, that car will be a ticking time bomb and will need to have all of its plastic parts replaced as they will start to crack even if you store the car in a climate cooled garage and hardly ever drive it. It's not the metal on these cars that is the problem, it's the amount of plastic these cars have to make them look great and work properly that will cause you to have a constant migraine headache. The earlier model 280s were not as bad though as the later model ones which are an electrical nightmare even when they were brand new. I had a friend who had got one when he graduated high school and it was the top-of-the-line turbo model with a digital dashboard and every possible add-on that car came with and he got rid of that car after only 3 years of ownership because it was always having to be repaired for something. That car was amazing when it was running properly. It looked better than practically every other sports car made at that time and it performed better than most of them too but they were not reliable anymore due to the amount of cheaply made electronic and plastic parts. The 300 models were way better built than the 280s were but they too suffered from some of the same kind of electric components problems that made those cars run well. But there is no doubt that the 300 and the 350 z model cars were designed better and used better quality parts than the 280s ever were. They can still be a bit of a pain but nowhere near as much of a pain as those 280s are. That's why you never see these cars on the road anymore. Their last owners had enough of them and they just gave up on them entirely. The amount of time and the cost didn't make any sense to try to keep them driving reliably anymore. Datsuns or Nissans in the 80s were all known to have electrical problems compared to Toyotas or Hondas and even Mazdas with their crazy rotary motors. Nissan didn't get better till the 90s when they were built the best and were cheap reliable cars that performed very well. That lasted till about the mid-2000s, because after that Nissans started to have problems due to them starting to use cheap quality parts that didn't last very long. So if you have to deal with rust problems on top of all those cars' electrical problems and the impossible-to-find cheap plastic parts, I would say you were crazy to try to bring that car back to life again. Because whoever ends up buying that car will not be a happy camper a month after he buys that car from you and he will feel like you ripped him off. There is a very good reason why somebody abandoned that car and it probably didn't even have any rust problems when they decided to abandon it. That car was obviously abandoned too or you wouldn't have found all of those parts stored in the back of it. That car's engine might have problems too that you won't find out about till you are able to get it back on the road again. The wheels alone will cost you probably over a thousand dollars to sort out properly and you will never be able to get more than 10k for that car no matter how much money and time you spend on it because of the miles that car probably has. You never mentioned that car's mileage and if you have all that car's repair records which is what would make that car worth more money. The cars you saw at those auctions were all low-mile heavily documented and were taken care of since the day they rolled out of the factory. They were not trashed and abandoned like this car obviously is. Those cars probably have all original Datsun parts with the exception of the tires because that wouldn't be safe to drive with that old of a tire. You will not be using all original parts to get that car working again and that will lower the value of that car a ton. You would be a sucker to buy that car from you for more than 5k if it's even worth that.

    Might as well upgrade to the 3L turbo. These are not my taste, but then, I never had one either. If I had, I may have a different opinion.
    A guy I knew had a 240Z back in the mid 70s and I took a ride with him. While it didn't excite me as much as my Brother's 66 Vette, it surprised me.
    Good luck, I'll be watching.

    Just wondering kevin when you tackle a project like this do you have the body completely stripped or do you only strip down to bare metal the areas where you find rust.

    • @paintucation
      @paintucation  8 месяцев назад +4

      Alan on something like this, I don't trust any of it. I'll strip everything except jambs, they're usually original paint and show their warts. A bonus of stripping to metal is your paint job is usually much flatter than if you went overtop of another one... Style lines look a little more crisp. Not sure if I'll "rotisserie" this gem, but the bottom needs attention fo sure!
