- For today's episode of Kult America I've decided to do some Taste Testing in Czech Republic. But this time I won't make the same mistake as I did in Greece. I will avoid tourist places and go to local restaurants to enjoy true homemade Czech food.

Hey, you should have tried meal called Svíčková . :)
Marcus58451 hell Yass every year on Christmas Eve😍
Marcus58451 Svíčková je top
Skvěle! A teď mam na ni chuť... :D
a kačenu!
Ach jo lidi, díky vám mám chutě na svíčkovou, kačenu, no vy mi dáváte zabrat :D
I just have to correct you. The third dish u were eating was makové šišky, which u read for the second dish. To be honest I, as czech, have absolutely no idea what u were eating on second plate but the third were makové šišky. Mák is poppy seeds and šišky is it called becouse of their shape. (Šiška means literally cone on tree). It's simply potato dough with poppy seeds and with melted butter on top. Smažák (fried cheese) is one of czech top meals anyways!
Ohh I see, the second was halušky, it's originally slovak dish and yeah, they dont look very yummy but gosh, I could kill for halušky😂
+de Willow thank you so much for
The informative comment!
de Willow the second one were halušky s bryndzou typical slovak and russian food so ok trying czech food :D
Lucie Šilhánková Yeah, as i said in second comment .. i've missed it and didnt see it in menu. Foreign wouldn't notice it's not originally czech dish as long as it's not written in dish description.
Hi all. I didn't read all the comments, but the second one wasn't bryndzove halusky for sure. It was strapačky s kapustou (you can see it in the menu) - as a Slovak I am not sure if it is a Slovak food, but probably yes. The dough is the same as for bryndzove halusky, but it's served usually with cabbage and bacon ;-)
Příště si dej u nás v Čechách svíčkovou šašku.... :-)
I wanted to let you guys know that I was half asleep during this video because the night before we drove 500KM and filmed an EPIC video which will be on the channel next month. Stay tuned!
Next time don't drive and try our beer :)
yea
yea it so good idea
Our beer is so delicious
Kult America you should stay longer in czech. Not just on one ugly road.
well first of all I gotta say that you´ve seen and tasted nothing yet from the true czech kitchen.. nor the most heavy food.. you should´ve stopped at Prague, Pilsner or any other but definitely not the borders of the country. You could´ve had some of the most delicious pieces of food that you never dream would exist..
2:44 you were absolutely right. "Jemča" (the brand of the tea) is one of the cheapest and most shitty teas we produce. :-/
This.
Kind of tea that makes me throw up, so i don't drink it :D
Well, who would drink it :D
its not tea at all :D
Yeah, it should be criminal to call it "tea" :D
Paradoxně v D testu, kde porovnávali několik výrobců čajů, jak z Čech, tak ze zahraničí, skončil čaj Jemča jako jeden z mála poctivých. :)
you must try knedlo- vepřo- zelo or svíčková, it's typical czech food and we love it !
with czech beer
Jo
Češi hlaste se
Zdravím
ActionGuy35 Ahoj
dobrej
Dc Pollux ahoj
Zde
You were only on the border :) You need to try somethink which was made in czech homes, not in the restaurants. You will love it! :)
to slovo je "something" not somethink.. ted se rechtam.."some think" znamena nekdo mysli.. jejej
Such a bad thing, that you didn't try our national delicious foods like Svíčková or Knedlo-zelo-vepřo :)
those are poppy seeds, my grandparents called poppy seeds "czechoslovakian caviar."
lmao
Come on :D
Wise man
:DD
Caitlin Guardino Yep!
Not a single Czech Meal was eaten that day...
Orly? šišky s mákem (the last meal with poppy seed/butter/sugar) is a typical cz food...
4mageo true story, 1 out of 3 meals and not even THAT typical.. Really was expecting something different.
AdosJ yep, for svíčková would be the best example... Fruit dumplings (filled with blueberries) also. Roasted duch with Red cabbage...
4mageo exactly! I agree with you on this.
Duck ;)
I like the way You talk,so calm.
I'm from Czech republic! 😃😁
nekecej :DD
Ciad nekecám😁
:DDD
congratulation... omg
You are NOT!!! You are from Kindgom of Bohemia, year 1403. Learn your whereabouts. :D
I don't see the hate around this video, becouse he didn't say anything bad about Czech food, it was just different to him so he was not used to taste like that. Remember he said, it's not bad but different. But next time you will visit us here in Czech republic, you should do some research about our traditional meals here in Czech. Like maybe use Google or something. Or maybe i can give some advicis myslef.
The most traditional or maybe most common meals made here in Czech republic, is really that deep fried cheese you were eating, but to be honest it is also one of the most junkish food out here. It's like fast food type of cousine.
So if you wanna try something really delicious and traditional you should try meal called "Svíčková" i dunno how to transfer that name to english so just remember that word. Not sure if it's originally from Czech but it's one of the most common food made by Czech chefs and people, so we can say it is traditional. Next we have Knedlo-vepřo zelo, which is dumplings with pork and saurkraut, rajská omáčka which is tomato sauce with dumplings and beef meat, koprová omáčka or "koprovka" which is dill sauce with dumplings and beef meat, or you can get Vepřové výpečky se špenátem a bramborovým knedlíkem, which is a spinach with potato dumpling and really delicious pork meat pieces. And oof course with all of these drink some beer, becouse these meals are extremely delicious with finest beer. For example Budweisers budvar is one the better ones.
There is a lot of more traditional meals, even salads, like cucumber salad with pepper, carrot salad or potato salad. From soups it will be probably "Kulajda" or "Držšťková" which is tripe soup. From fishes for example carp, pike or freshwater eel.
Just remember to go to god restaurants becouse a lot of Czech restaurants are bad and serve junk food, which have nothing to do with traditional Czech cousine becouse even they do not know how proper Czech cousine looks like or do not know how to make those meals how they're suppose to.
I can even give you some tips where you should go to eat really good food.
It will be Café Imperial which is located in the capital city Prague. It's the rastaurant of one of the most famous Czech chef Zdeněk Pohlreich.
Restaurace U Štěpána, Motorest Pod Řípem, Restaurace Georgia, Wellness relax areál Hnačov, or Motorest Lesní Zátiší.
Just tell them you wan't to eat or try something traditional and they will gave you some good tips i'm sure. :)
4:56 Hehe, that's actually the other dish - Makové šišky (Poppy seed cones). The dish at 4:56 is called Halušky. It's made out of potatoes and flour that is mixed and boiled.
"Halušky" are actually Slovak dish.
If you want to get fried cheese in Czech Republic, better choice would be fried Hermelin.
Yeap, I agree.
Very interesting :) thank you for showcasing Czech traditions on such a positive way 😊
yay šišky s mákem :D i loved them as a kid :D
those black dots are poppy seeds or they might as well also be black caraway seeds. Both are popular in Poland too
Definitely poppy seeds, that dish is a classic.
This is awesome!
I am from Czech Republic, I like so much food in 4:00 , but food in 5:04 is more Slovak than Czech
you made a mistake... you did not have a beer.
super video - its very nice to see foreigners visit some other places than Prague
u got new subscriber from Slovakia. Nice video bro!
It's must be near the PL border because everything in menu is in polish.
He was in Moravskoslezský region maybe. Moravskoslezský region located in the northeast of the CZE with Ostrava as a capital city of that region. That region is bordered with Poland and Slovakia as a only region in the Czech Republic.
Yep I'm pretty sure he was in Moravskoslezský.
Je to v Bukovci, kousek do Jablunkova. Je to druhá nejvýchodnější obec v republice, podle některých i první.
Myslel jsem, že je to Jablunkov.
Akcja XD Yeah thats the problem with eating near the boarder. Its often not traditional food of that nation. Like Mexican v Texmex
Hi Kult America im from czech republic and thanks you tried the czech food :)
the black seeds on the 'kluski' are poppy seeds. often used on pastry and on cakes such as 'makowiec'.
Those black grains are called in Czech and Slovakia: Mak ...those are poppy seeds
Boro Sloboda same word in Poland. We also call it "mak"👍
MojaSzerokosc oh nice :D cheers m8
vystre tak chytrej..jeje
No super !
Teraz mám chuť na vyprážaný syr
I am so suprised. I am from Prague and usually if you go to a restaurant in a small village food is more about nothing than about good decoration and flavours... Very nice lol..
you was absollutly right with that sign on the door :)
The third dish is actually "Makové Šišky" and not the second one :)
amelie w. šulánky s makem!:)
Kacule86 To je to samé, ne?:D
Your videos helped me with my insomnia. thanks.
Poppy seed...very healthy and delicious, typical in Slavic nation here in the middle of Europe👍
My gosh this was so nice to watch, I thought youre gonna hate that cheese and you didnt, that is truly one of the most typical foods people order at restaurants. As for the sweet one, it is not a dessert but a normal dish, the black thing on the top is a poppy seed and you are quite right, its not that sweet but also kinda bitter, thats why we put sugar and butter (not oil) over it. :) Hope you will pay us a second visit someday :)
the thing on the top of the dish is poppy😄 i live this food so much
You crossed the border at Istebna Jasnowice to Jablunkov?
the sweet dumplings in the first restaurant look like Germ Knödel - a dish you will find in variations throughout Czech Republic, Austria or Southern Germany.
Hey, I wonderful video, it's really great to see an American interested in the Czech cuisine.
Just wanted to point out, that you swapped the names of the second and the third dish. The second dish you had were probably halušky se zelím (halušky with cabbage, not sure if there is a proper term for halušky in English). The third one were šišky s mákem (literally cones with poppy seeds).
Just a few interesting facts about mák (poppy).
The plant is exactly the same plant from which opium is extracted.
Poppy seeds are widely used in the Slav countries for example, it is put on pastries as you mentioned.
The Czech Republic/Czechia is the largest producer of poppy seeds in the world.
Oh and even though many people mentioned it, Czech dishes go wonderfully with beer. If you ever get guláš or vepřo knedlo zelo, both amazing dishes, get a pint of Czech beer, you won't regret it. Czech beer is one of the best in the world and most of our cuisine is made to go with it.
Cheers. :)
+Dušan Janiš thank you for watching, I had a great experience and hope that next time I visit I'll have a local show me around:)
Who cares about the tea anyway? Remember European food is not super sweet like American food due to they don't use so much white sugar there. It's better for you ! You are so good in these videos! Love to see these dishes!
curk je prakticky jed pro nas organismus...
6:00 its called "mák" :D
mák = poppy seeds, banned in US for drug production
Yeah but here in Czech Republic it is delicious on our food and it is one of the traditional ingredients in our dishes or bakery products.
Arianeria nepřežil bych ani týden bez makovníku :D
Já bych pro nudle s mákem zabíjela. :D
I live in Czech and mák is very good :D
The thing that was on the "Boiled dough" Is actually called Mák (in czech Language) it is extracted from one kind of Flower and then it's Served on sweet food :)
The third dish you had was "šišky s mákem", which can be translated as "poppy seed dumplings". It's kind of potato dough, filled with poppy seed, which is very common in Czech republic, used in a lot of sweet recipes and we don't see that kind of plant as an opiate. Hope you enjoy it :-)
Holy everything is heavy for this guy!!
This food is so good
ur feckin gorgeous...
never laughed that much when watching ur video... good fun bro haha
Omg! Yes! Thank you! Finally an actual American that knows it's Czech Republic, not Czechoslovakia!! You really made my day
The sweet dish is boiled potato dough + poppy seeds + melted butter, most probably. Sometimes called knedlíky (dumplings), sometimes šišky (depends on the shape of it).
(And sometimes people add plums, pears, strawberries or apricot into it. It has also a salty version with bacon or pork rind.)
Fried cheese actually isn't that bad. :D
Super film !
Pozdrawiam :)
The sweet food are small dumplings with melted butter, poppy seeds and powdered sugar! :)
no idea what was the second food but when i was watching it it looks like a traditional slovakian food brinzove halusky. hope you enjoyed tho !
Looked like some sort of Poppy Seed Dumpling. You can find them in Austria as well: Mohnknödel.
In my opinion you are best youtuber in America
Oh the 'sweet' dish that wasn't on the dessert menu is like a fruit dumpling with poppy seed sauce and the white crumbles are also put on some koláče
The black on top of the ''OIL DOUGH'' was I think its called Poppy but in CZECH REPUBLIC we call it ''MÁK''
You should try something more typical from Czech republic. Maybe Svíčková (I love it :D ). But yeah, good video :)
btw iam from Czech republic
The last dish was my ,,childhood nightmare".. :-D :-D
If you visit our beautiful Czech rep. in restaurants ask for our typicals like "Svíčková" - creamy sauce with beef and dumplings, you will love it! & "Knedlo, zelo vepřo" - its pork with cabbage and also dumplings! Dont forget on "Guláš"!
We definitely have to meet when I will be in Poland :)
You had to try also some czech soups man like "Kulajda" or "Drztkova", you need a "good" stomach for a second one. But its delicious. ;) Nice video btw!
Great video! Me as a Czech person, I'd recommend something more typical for the Czech Rep. cuisine. Especially "Knedlo, zelo, vepřo" which is our national meal - very heavy, but delicious AF. Anyway you did try some of the better meals we eat in our country. The fried cheese is our probably most favourite and also it's so easy to prepare, the second dish I think it was a meal called "Halušky" which is more like a Slovakian cuisine, anyway me personally? I eat it almost everytime with brindza - the goat cheese and it is delicious as well! The third meal is my childhood's most favourite - "Makové šišky" - always very sugarish, but with a glass of milk it is unforgetable!
Keep up the good work, cheers from the Czech Republic!
I'm from Czech Republic and I'm glad to see, what Americans think about our food. :)
You have much more turkish viewer than you expect. I think you should put turkish subtitles on all of your videos. I already send one turkish subtitle for this video. I hope it will appear in a few days. Thank you for the video :)
Could you please email me or write me on facebook and maybe we can make a plan, many people ask me about the Turkish subtitles so if you could help I'd be super grateful!!!
Kult America I sent you an email. waiting for reply
İ LOVE RYAN
As for the lastdish, it's lunch meal and it's supposed to be sweet. In Czech republic we do eat sweet meals for lunch (and everybody in England thinks it'S bizarre).
Those black seeds are poppy seeds, called "mak" in Czech and several other languages. A Czech meal is incomplete without beer.
You should visit Chata na Hvězdě, it's near to polish border (near to Broumov). I was there last year, nice food. Also nice place for a walk.
I love Czech ( Czechia - Bohemia) and i love Czech food goulash and Beer. And Prague a major city in the middle of Europe.
You mixed foods.. that 2nd food was Halusky not Sisky.. that was 3rd food..
Hej, what's the restaurant name and where is it? I live in Śląsk and I want to go there :)
Bar pod krympom, really nice little place but crazy ice on the road so drive with care!
Nice video. The second dish isnt like a mac and cheese. Its called "Halušky". Its made from flour and water usually served with bits of roasted bacon, sauerkraut or cheese typical for Slovakia called "Brynza". The third dish was a dish made from potato dough. Usually served with melted butter and poppy seeds on the top :).
The black bits on kluski is called "poppy seeds" :)
You should taste houskove knedliky - czeskie knedliczki z gulaszem, it's really awesome and worth to eat :D
TrustGlaser knedlíky s gulášem? :DD
Yes! Exactly, I love it :D
This makes me so hungry...
The sweet dumplings wre with poppy seed. Legal in Czech republic and basis of some exeptional recipies.
The thing on the third dish is poppy seed. My mom once got in trouble with my school (in America) because she put it on our "fruit dumplings" because poppies apparently produce oppium
And now I'm hungry 😂
Hardcore slavic food lol. The sweet food you ate in the first restaurant its called Šišky z mákem translation would be cones with poppy.
I can't see candle sauce where is it ?
Thats alot of food to eat in one sitting. It looked like poppy seeds in the dough but I never knew them to be bitter. Not having beer is a sin in the Czech Republic...but if you are tired and driving it might not be a good idea. I always get hranolky..french fries and they are amazed with how much ketchup I use. They would remember me year to year when I stopped in to eat. Im a vegan so the food is limited but in prague there are more choices than ever. I love Czechia.
As for the meal: šišky s mákem...poppy is on the top...if you are still wondering :D
nevíte v kterém městě byl?
To je vesnice Bukovec hotel Kempa, Bar pod Kympom tam jedl.mohl jet kousek dál do Jablunkova to je alespoň město a velký výběr restauraci
Its really nice to know what other cultures think about your own country :D , please could you tell me, which camera are you using? the quality is awesome
I m from CZE and i was laughing alot :D. Honestly no idea what was the second one , still looks like my grandma do sometimes.
You must try Czech beer, it is one of the best beers in the world.
You made me hungry.
It´s actually so easy to find a restaurant in the Czech Republic :D You´d have to travel a bit more, these mountain type villages are always turistical.
The best food in the CZ is:
- Dumplings with pork and cabbage
- Then SVÍČKOVÁ (Creamy, sour sauce with beef, dumplings)
- And for me it´s DUCK WITH DUMPLINGS AND RED CABBAGE!
Hello, I´m from czech republic. Your reaction on our food was good... And the 3rd food was a normal lunch, In czech republic we also have a sweet lunch. goodbye & I wait at new video... :)
Is this video recent, because I am so jealous of the snow, I live in the uk and we haven't had snow in two years and even then that was gone in a day.
We filmed this last Friday morning, you'll see much more snow in the next few videos:)
Smažák s hranolkama! Yum
just one detail the second thing were halušky and its tipical for slovenia
The fact that he is casual and minding his own business and when there is renovation in the background has got to be a meme.
good video/dobrý video 😁
poppy seeds mate :D the thing on the top
6:11 That's poppy seeds, I've seen them on desserts and inside these bread roll kind of things in the Czech Republic, Poland & Hungary. Not exactly my favourite filling though.
Fried cheese or smazeny syr (I think) is usually sold inside a bun; you can find one easily in Prague (yes, it's obv a super touristic area but hey hahah).
I'm guessing Slovak food would be really similar to Czech?
YummYakitori Well my dad was born Prague while Czechoslovakia still existed and yes Slovak and Czech food is quite similar since they only split in 1993.
Fried cheese is usually serve in bun only as fast food option. Most comonly is served just like what we saw in video :)
Lokmeny
I see, thank you for clearing that up :)
I like how you spelled "sýr" correctly, with Y!
Your 3th food was sisky s makem. Its dough from cooked potatoes. Normally is without taste, you can then add on your *sisky* what do you like, like curd, or poppy as you had. As i heard your poppy was bitter it means it was old and its not good. Also your sisky was *swimming* in the water not in oil where they was cooked, its also not good. Normally you get them good dripped and then just with melted butter this poppy or special plum marmelade, curd and so . :)
Good video :)
lol, iam snowboarding there every winter :)
The second dish, the one in a bowl, was Halušky. It's boiled dumpling dough (I really don't know how to explain it to a foreign, sorry) with cheese, smoked meat and sometimes with special kind of milk (brynza). It is traditional Slovakian meal, not czech.
