I think some of these, especially faces, may just be a result of the same artist drawing the two faces that are in similar poses. They'll likely focus on specific features that become prominent in any face they draw.
I'm not convinced Doomguy's face was the literal basis for any of them. They were done by the same artist or at least were created in a very similar style tom him, but I don't think they literally took his sprites and edited it to make these new faces.
I wouldn't have thought so either, but the fact they recycled A LOT of other Doom sprites and textures makes me believe it's the case. You can really see a lot of similarities, and it does make sense - if you're gonna have to draw faces at around the same scale as Doomguy's head, why not just use his head?
@@GermanPeter I don't think they are the same scale. That's just the thing. These new faces are quite larger than Doom guy's face. When you quickly flssh DG's face on thr other faces for comparison, we see that the facial features don't quite line up. This convinces me that the same artist/similar art style was at work here. Hey I may very well be wrong though.
@@YasonYou They definitely are bigger and I initially meant to edit Doomguy's face in the same way I did for Hitler at the beginning, but didn't get around to it. You can do it yourself in MS Paint right now though. Just stretch out Doomguy's face a bit horizontally and vertically, and they're pretty much the same. Doing that takes far less effort than drawing them from scratch, and considering how much else they copied, I think it's safe to assume that's what they did here.

The UAC logo being visible on the SoD mission pack texture is intentional, as according to the story BJ is taken to the future during that point of the game
There aren't any horrible implications with the UAC crates, nor are they inexplicable. The plot of Ultimate Challenge involves using the Spear to steal technology from the future, applying things like nuclear weaponry, microchips, and satellites. The final level takes you _to_ the future where you have your final confrontation.
The skulls on the skull shishkebab are also used in the texture SP_FACE2 in Doom. I found this out while making a floor texture version of the texture for use in my megawad project.
Something worth mentioning about the splash screen in SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D; B.J's face there looks remarkably similar to Doomguy's face when he's turning his head.
I checked, not the same. Doomguy yanks his whole neck around, BJ just moves it slightly. Oh wait, the splash screen, my bad. Just checked again, it looks similar, but not entirely. Also, it's based on a real piece of art, so I doubt it.
One thing to note about the Ultimate Challenge is there are two versions, one which uses the Doom textures and one which doesn't. It's not clear why there's two versions, but from what I've gathered the one with unique textures is what was released by Formgen (also some minor changes to the final level layout), and id Software's re-releases use the Doom textures. At one point I assumed id software pirated the mission packs for the re-releases and got an unclean version, but if my memory serves the evidence suggests something more along the lines of an early version being in id's archives.

Gotta agree, the mission packs of Spear of Destiny are amazing. It's like they had more time to redraw the sprites where they look more accurate and realistic.
and there not made by ID who was fully neck deep in Doom development Formgen was behind the the two "Super Mission Packs" while ID also licensed Apogee the Engine and the rights to make a official sequel. they allower the SOD missions to come out but pulled the IP rights from ROTT and let them use the tech to build a new IP with Tom Hall sill kind of spurned from being let go from ID over his rigidness to his doom bible.
The UAC crate used in Spear of Destiny was from an early version of Ultimate Challenge, while the later Formgen release used a completely different box texture. For unknown reasons, the 1998 Activision release of Wolf 3D and Spear of Destiny used the early version of Ultimate Challenge with the UAC crate. (12:32)
Dr Schabbs is never based on Doomguy' face- with a handful of pixels you can only draw so much faces - also some of those comparisons seem slightly forced
Great video, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but Doomguy being based on the Wolfenstein sprites and/or vice versa feels like a huge stretch. It's obviously the same art style and artist but the there's barely a single pixel that is actually the same. Maybe it's just a joke that is going over my head.
I thought my comparisons made it clear enough, but there are distinct similarities. The nose, mouth, eyes and even ears often line up really well. Especially for Hitler.
Could you do one for Doom textures reused in Quake? I did notice a very small amount of texture changes, but it’s still very possible you can see it if you’ve played Doom 1 and 2. Those dirt textures seen in E1M1 after you go down the elevator is reused from Doom 2 if I recall correctly.
I wanns work on a giant flow chart of all the id textures together, id have segments for doom (+doom dump) wolfenstein (+spear of destiny), quake and a misc. Then have the related textures linked, and source photos also linked for ones made from pictures!
Ultimate Challenge is worth a playthrough if you like Wolfenstein 3D. Return to Danger not so much as I found the levels have a lot of keys hidden behind secret walls, pushwall mazes and annoying things like that.
Wolfenstein came first and it makes sense to use previous assets to make doom. Plus the memory constraints of the time meant you had to get really crafty to make it all work.
Baron of hell's claw attack looks similiar to same one from red enemy in Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D. 13:08 I think main reason for hate is levels themselves. Almost all of them contain secrets you MUST reveal to progress I didn't realised about german speech. It's funny to me because one of lines I hear as "Fingaaa" ("Finger!")

As one of the original rippers, you should probably update the TSR links in the description, as they're dead now. This is because they were moved from the "PC / Computer" category to the "MS-DOS" category.
I said "two rows of bricks in a 64x64 square", which applies to both Doom and Wolfenstein. In Wolfenstein, they simply copied and pasted the same pattern 3 more times, turning it into a 128x128 texture with four rows of bricks. I also don't know why you're pointing out the Mac Family games came out later, I never said they appeared sooner.

i dont see much of the resemblance here. im pretty sure each frame was upscaled from SNES and then given detail so i dont see why they would go to such lengths just to edit doomguy into mr mustachio
You can't just "upscale" a sprite. You can make it bigger, sure, but you have to add in the detail. Reusing Doomguy's face is the detail. They did use the PC graphics as a base, but they made them twice as big. They still needed to add a lot of the detail, and that's where Doom's graphics came in. Some of these are not really convincing, like the faces. Could just be that they were drawn by the same artist in the same resolution. When you work with pixel art you do end up repeating yourself a lot like that-there are only so many ways to draw a similar-looking nose in 4x6 pixels after all..
Wow, well it looks like the games with the same artists can have similar graphics.. however those faces of doomguy and wolfenstein bosses are very uncovnincing, those looks like completely diferent images by same author, nothing more

For the Ubermutant, Doomguy's hurt/pain face is the template. It looks more like that, rather than Doomguy's resting face.

Some of these are not really convincing, like the faces. Could just be that they were drawn by the same artist in the same resolution. When you work with pixel art you do end up repeating yourself a lot like that-there are only so many ways to draw a similar-looking nose in 4x6 pixels after all..

Wow, well it looks like the games with the same artists can have similar graphics.. however those faces of doomguy and wolfenstein bosses are very uncovnincing, those looks like completely diferent images by same author, nothing more
