2016 -2021 Honda Civic How to replaced rear brake pads DIY easy five steps

- This video is a How to video about how I changed the rear brake pads. Remember that the e brake caliper will need to be retracted with a scanner or 12v battery but the other side is a regular caliper that can be compressed as shown in this video.
I did make a mistake and when I was compressing one of the calipers I applied to much pressure on the wiring that connects to the E brake and accidentally de pinned the wires resulting in having a brake system error code on the dash. I tried repinning the wires and wasn’t able to figure it out on my own so I went with a local mechanic and he told me that I popped a fuse and put the two wires wrong. $220 lesson learned please don’t make my mistake and just be very cautious when compressing the caliper. Other than that the job went smoothly. Another tip is you need to retract the electronic ebrake with a special tool or possibly a 12v battery (as seen on other videos on RUclips ) As always bring it to a professional and if you decide to do it do it at your own risk.
5 step guide
1. Raise the car and remove the wheel
2. Take off the tension wire & loosen the back 2 bolts with a 7mm
3. Remove caliper and old brake pads
4. Compress the caliper (with tool you can rent at local automotive store)
5.put new brake pads and reassemble
** Disclaimer this video is for entertainment purposes only and anything you see in the video was how I did it which did result in me making mistakes and causing me to take it to a professional. If you decide to do it I am not liable for any damages or anything that could happen to you or your car and I would recommend a professional to do the work for you **

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! I WAS STUCK, ALMOST IN A BAD SPOT, CAR STUCK IN MY GARAGE, BUT YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME & SAVED ME!! THANKS AGAIN!
this is not a correct way to do it, rear brake use eletronic and need to calibrate this is not normal brake
I strongly agree with other viewer's comment : "Wrongly done you have to retract the electronic brake motor first before you push back the piston otherwise damage will occur at caliper components".
agreed
This the best informative video on how to take the e-brakes off! Great work!!! 💪🏾
This helped soooo much :) thank you!!!
No problem 😁 Glad it helped !! It would mean a lot if you hit that subscribe button 👍🏽
many times i use clamp to push back the caliper on the front no problem, in some cars on the rear you just turn the caliper clock wise and the caliper start to move inside to make more space for the new pads. but always open the cap on the conteiner for the brake fluid to release air. but thanks for your video i just finish my brake change this morning ...
What’s is the tool you use to push the circle thing back
How to put the brake caliper on without the c clamp ?
What size of that torx bit you are using to unscrew the 2 bolts of a caliper?
Just did the rear passaner side. One question, do you have to disengage the parking brake before starting the brake jon? Does it matter? I've disengaged it, I've assumed that would make it easier to remove the brake pads, etc. Does that make sense?
Be thankful you only did the passenger side.
Best video 💪
Thanks 🔥
Wrongly done you have to retract the electronic brake motor first before you push back the piston otherwise damage will occur at caliper components.
Do you mind explaining how to retract the Electronic ebrake? So I can pin your comment
Zero Planet you can detach the motor and compress it as you were before which should require less force
ruclips.net/video/je9NXVbanCM/видео.html
You must retract EPB first , 2 ways to do it #1 a proper scan tool, (easiest way , (less than a min)done before taking off rear wheels) once that is done u can push piston into the caliper normally
#2 take off off EPB motor 2 torx bolts , then use e11 torx turn clock wise till it stops put motor back on(5-10 min) and push piston normally as u would the front brakes.....
If you compress the piston without retracting the electronic parking either electronically(putting the car in maintenance mode) or manually by using a torx 11, it can damage the actuator for the parking brake.
What if you retract the e brake and then separate the motor from the caliper assembly before pushng back the piston. Will that work?
Wow everyone ,don't follow his steps, you are going to burn the electric parking brake system by forcing the motor to turn. The motor has no clue you are changing the pads and it thinks you still have the SAME old brake pads. Also, these calipers are NOT made to be turned + pushed. Once again, this is a EPB system, not your regular rear brakes. Same for the Mazda CX5.
I agree with your statement. I watch four or five videos on how to handle the e brake. I ended up buying a Innova 3160RS scanner tool. It allowed me to put the E brake into maintenance mode. I also downloaded the APP which paired with the scanner walks you step by step. Since I now own two cars with e brakes it was worth the purchase plus it scans for other issues too.
I used to work at a Honda . And before doing anything we had to connect it to our computer and the brake system for the rear has to be switched to maintenance mode or service mode . Then when you are finish you switch it back to normal mode
Take the motor off and manually wind the piston back in.
Unfortunately, this did not work for me!
Good knowledge given me
What if you turn the e-brake off before you do this procedure?
You need to retract the e brake before doing the driver side brake pads
5:38 forgot to remove the cap on the brake master cylinder too..
Shoot forgot to do that. Is that essential? It was not hard to press the piston back to the housing though.
Compressing the calliper with that tool does not work. It does not move a millimeter. In fact it is so hard to turn that it may cause damage if forced. Your video does not show compressing the calliper. It shows a compressed calliper - video gap.
I did this and use the right tool.I took to Honda because on reverse I heard a knock, just one every time I go in reverse. They told me I messed up something and had to pay 700 dollars for the rear caliper on the ebrake side.Anyone get this??? Or is this even a thing?
What tool did you use?
Zero Planet The same exact tool.
Damian yeah I had the I issue where the wires got depined and needed to take it to a shop to get them repined
Zero Planet I was told I had to replace my caliper.I didn’t speak to them much about it.Mu car drives fine and brakes fine just that one knock noise it makes backing up.
Damian weird did they tell you exactly what was wrong with it?
Is the EPB motor on just one side or both sides?
Both
Just use the old break pads ause a clamp
You don't need a computer, you don't need to put it into service mode, but you do need to remove the electronic pb motor on the back of the caliper. Wind it clockwise to retract and the push the piston in.
If you don't do this you will damage the pb motor.
really? this video is how to do it properly? I try it now
@@isDatBoiunfortunately this video will damage your electronic parking brake. You need to take the motors off the calipers and wind them back by hand.
Did the same thing. Did he told you which fuse popped?
Yeah he did but it’s been a while so I kinda forgot. It should just be the relay that goes for your E-brake I would say check tour owners Manuel so you can see the diagram
Figure it out. The plug didnt make good contact. Had to get new plug. Well first time working with electric park brake. Lesson learn
@@markanthonycalosing7290 same here haha
Sir which one to hold the handbreak or the cluch pls guide me which one hoping for your reply my son just buy 2016 civic and im planning to change the rear break your video is very helpul neen to need which one to hold while the is running thanks
Dante Delos Santos there’s no clutch pedal in this car
Shit you're giving this dude too much credit he wasn't even supposed to change the damn brakes those pads were still good at least another 7 to 8 months out of those pads those are rear brakes besides you did the procedure wrong. But he tried.
You did not need to change those brakes. They were only about halfway through there life.
I like to do it ahead of time plus they were making sounds and my girlfriend didn’t like it
How do u reset the brake system light
Bro those look like 15% wear to me. I’m on the originals at 100k miles just changing it now. Measuring the pads is not hard. Use Hondas pad spec to determine when to change.
E brake light come on after didn’t it 😏
Your girlfriend must of been pissed
You’re not supposed to rotate the cylinder - just back the parking brake up all the way and compress the cylinder
This is not how to change the breaks, you should take this video down or edit it. Following this video costed my friend $3200 in total with Honda after the caliper compressor broke the electric calipers. They have to be retracted with a scanner or with a 12v battery.
There’s a disclaimer in the description about how I did this work and it’s for entertainment only. My caliper didn’t break so your friend must have done something wrong. You can use a scanner or a 12v to retract the electric caliper but you can still use this method to do the other side of the vehicle that doesn’t have the electric caliper. Btw a new electric caliper doesn’t cost $3,200 your friend got ripped off at the dealership
@@ZeroPlanet_ your caliper and parking brake didn’t break because you got lucky. There’s a high chance of messing up the electronics and parking break when using the tool as you normally would with older cars. It is very important to use the scanner or a 12v battery to retract the brakes into maintenance mode to avoid the high possibility of messing something up. I agree he got ripped off by their Honda dealership but unfortunately now he is too scared to do any work on his own car because of this incident. He followed this video step by step and ended up with trouble. The majority of people don’t read the disclaimers and I personally didn’t even realize you had one. You should really add to the title or edit the video that it is not recommended to use the traditional brake caliper tool on these newer brakes
It’s always a good idea to watch multiple videos and read the description and ask a professional for advise if you are going to attempt to do something you’ve never tried before. I’m not going to call myself getting lucky if it worked for me and the many others that have watched the video. I personally did my research before I attempted to do it and just documented how I did it for entertainment only with a disclaimer since I did disconnect the wires by accident when I did this job.
@@ZeroPlanet_ Your video is called "How to replace rear brake pads DIY easy". That is not an entertainment video, it's a "how-to" video. I am surprised after the number of mistakes you made that you discovered yourself after making it and those that others have since pointed out that you still felt it was ok to leave it it online.
Cómo retroceder con una bateria
Tree forts 😂
Should take this video down. Following these steps will cause damage to your electric parking brake
So easy a caveman can do it.
Wrong way to change bro
3 years later and car has no issues with the ebrake. Also did it on a second Civic and same thing no issues. Just showing a different way that worked for me and may work for others if they do not have the tool to retract.
Just change the fucken brake
Here's a suggestion for future. Don't make "how to" videos on something as important as replacing car brakes when you clearly are still an amateur yourself. People can get hurt following incorrect information when the results can have serious consequences. I appreciate you were trying to help others but this is not the type of job untrained amateurs should be attempting without "qualified" guidance.
If you read the description I state that this is how I did it and the mistakes I made. There’s also plenty of video besides mine that show you the same way I did it. Any video you see on RUclips regarding any type of work should be left to a professional. Do not just watch one video then go an attempt something that you’ve never done before.
Reg I am planning to replace the rear disk brake pads on my 2015 Civic which is NOT equipped with an e brake system. Is the method shown in this video acceptable for my CIVIC that is NOT equipped with the ebrake system? Thanks.
