Using amp sim is more flexible. After tracking a guitar track you can go back to the session and editing more like changing the gain, eq, efx or even mic placing . So if you going to record with real amp and micing this is not possible to amend.
I agree with you, but there are pros and cons to both amp sims and real amps. I think it's more important to know when it's best to use which option. In many cases and amp sim will more than do the job. Other times only a real amp will cut it. Just depends on the situation =)
you can also test analog hardware with access analog too before you buy it
