Something I've learned from watching Bernth and Matt Heafy play is that it's okay to plant your hand differently for different points of attack. I started playing on a strat, and the way I play my Dinky 7 or EC-10 isn't the same way I play the strat.
The down picking does sound better. There's a few parts where it definitely has more punch to it. Double picking also has extra (constant) plectrum scrape over the strings, that takes away some of the definition as well. It becomes hard to unhear it once you notice it.

I love Metallica but I learned Downpicking from playing Misfits songs when I first picked up guitar which definitely helped when I got into Metallica and thrash metal haha

I can downpick master of puppets half asleep at 185 to 190 bpm but at 210 I'm sloppy and tension. It's only 25 bpm different
