    Bill Evans was really at the peak of his life here, he was free from drugs, had an happy marriage and his son would soon be born. I think you can tell from the playing!

    Bill Evans went back to his alma mater, Southeastern Louisiana University Nov. 1979 to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award. He had Johnson and LaBarbera with him, and they performed a concert on campus. "At least 2 of the 4 years I spent here were 2 of the happiest years of my life, and I owe a great deal to Southeastern and the faculty." B.E.

    One of those rare occasions when Bill was given a good, healthy Steinway to play on. I heard him at Carnegie a month or two before he died. He was accompanying Mel Torme. What a class act!

    Gorgeous! Dazzling! I've heard it many, many times, and it's never too much. But what an affliction to see his hands so swollen. Or was it just my impression? Notice the wonderful solos of Gomez.

    • @christophercharles9645
      @christophercharles9645 2 года назад

      You are not imagining things. I've read the swollen hands seen over his later career were due to untreated hepatitis which he contracted in the late-50's from intravenous drug use. A sad condition but he certainly persevered and made some wonderful music right to the end.

    in 'It is known that Bill recorded very few Ellington tunes during his career (in fact, only "I Got It Bad", In A Sentimental Mood", and "Reflections in D") . "Blue Serge", although not composed by the Duke himself, was composed by his son Mercer, and was immortally recorded by the great Ellington "Blanton-Webster Band" of 1939-40, arguably the greatest Jazz Orchestra ever; very few musicians have covered it ever since. Bill Evans' "rediscovery" of this classic in the mid 70's really makes us totally forgive him for his almost total lack of Ducal entries.

    This was four years before his death. You can see it in his playing, how the last years of his life were very hard for him. He goes into a more dark, hopeless way of playing, yet complex and beautiful .

    • @paulparoma

      I somewhat disagree. During this particular time period Bills life was on the up. He was kicked his heroin addiction was and receiving methadone treatments. He was recently to Nenette and was expecting the birth of his first son Evan and had adopted Maxine.

    Were was this done? Was it in Louisiana on the 24 of April in 1975? Very curious since I was teaching at SLU, Bill's alma mater, at tthat time.

    • @hivicar
      @hivicar 7 лет назад +2

      He brought his last trio back there, you recall, in Nov of '79. The date was released as "Homecoming". That had been the only time back, I believe. But this appearance with the only trio version that I saw, sounds great!

    • @rnethercutt
      @rnethercutt 7 лет назад +6

      No, the 1975 trio was not at Southeastern. I would have known, since teaching at SLU from 1967-1999. I was the one that recorded Bill's concert there in 1979 and also wrote the liner notes for the "Homecoming" CD which was later released by Milestone.

      Thanks for the clarification. I knew it wasn't in the USA state of Louisiana at his Alma Mater, Southeastern Louisiana University. Interesting to know there is a Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
