A lot of people immediately reject VR thinking it “has” to be a first person immersive experience with developers making niche experiences like that all the time. But to me, having a Nintendo Switch that allows you to play on the go, then go home, put on a headset and see a huge digital screen appear in your room where you can play your games, even in 3D sometimes sounds super appealing, it’s like the “Switch” concept in a new level.
I’m glad you re-released an older video in this way. Too often I think creators are overly focused on making newer things rather than revitalizing older ones. Of course, this is speaking relatively as older video content isn’t really old per se.
That Nintendo reuses old technology in new ways is actually a brilliant business strategy. The Switch is much weaker than the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but that also makes it much cheaper to make. So cheap in fact that the switch is much cheaper to buy for customers. Imagine a parent sees the Switch for 300 to 350 and then sees the PS5 and Xbox for 500, guess which one the parent is going to buy
And the console "limitations" probably makes it cheaper to develop for too. And surely reduce the cost for storage on Nintendo's server since games are way lighter than on other devices.
While the idea of it could lead to some great games, most people get sick playing VR for more then an hour. Unless Nintendo somehow found a cure to prevent VR nausea, I dont think it would be a core part of the console. An accessory for VR goggles seems more likely like with the labo vr a few years ago
I feel many people who get sick do so from a specific movement heavy style of game. VR headsets also offer very cool games that work from a nearly static perspective, at the most basic a simple home cinema big screen to play your usual flat screens in your tiny japanese apartement.
I've been thinking about how Nintendo will innovate their new console this time around and, after the total failure that was the transition from the Wii to the Wii U, I figured they'd probably do one of two things: go a completely different route than the Switch, or innovate the Switch in a MASSIVE way. Given that the Switch has been one of the best-selling and most popular consoles of all time, it makes complete sense for them to make a device that is basically a more advanced Switch, but also innovates (as they usually do) by adding a VR feature to the console. This way people will get the best of not two, but THREE worlds: Handheld, TV Mode, and VR capabilities; absolutely AMAZING!!!! I truly hope this is the route they follow because I've never tried VR and I'd love my first experience with it to have that famous Nintendo polish ;)
It seems like Nintendo has been building a vr game system since the Wii. First they needed the controlers which they’ve continued to refine with subsequent systems. Then they needed a portable system which they’ve refined with the Wii U and now the switch. They are slowly building a vr system.
I honestly feel like if they release a VR headset for Switch 2, It probably won't use the Screen of the console itself. I think the most likely scenario is that the headset itself would function as a dock. You put the switch inside it, close it, connect it to power, and it boots up on the internal individual eye monitors.
Nintendo is a company that takes pride in its characters. I think being able to see the characters while you play as them is a huge part of the appeal so I don't see them going all in on a device that makes first person gameplay better
Yeah especially with their multimedia direction they've slowly been trending towards since the Pokemon anime took off in the 90s.I don't think its a coincidence that the series Nintendo gives second chances to are the ones ether built to be more toyetic (Pikmin with the conceit PNF-404 is a constantly evolving planet that gives you an excuse to pump out creature and Pikmin designs like its Pokemon), have a natural in-roads to movie/TV with their premise (Star Fox with its Thunderbirds and Jim Henson inspiration hence the tie-in animation for Star Fox Zero) or straight out had a successful TV show (Kirby & Donkey Kong). Hell you could even point to the failed anime expansion of F-Zero in response to Captain Falcon's popularity in Smash during the GameCube era resulting on it going on ice for 20ish years as good older example of this phenomena.
I feel like Nintendo would be what VR gaming needs, they'ld focus on gameplay and prioritize aestethic over raw graphical power. The only two VR games that I consistantly heard about were like that, namely Beat Saber and {the game where you must shoot every foes in the room and times moves only when you do}. Other big gaming/tech companies tried too hard to give us a graphical WOW that lasted for 2 sec living us with borring walking/climbing simulators...
Idk about VR, there's a reason why all the consoles putting out actual worthwhile VR games exclusively make VR games. You can't juggle both, it's way more complicated than a 3D filter.
This is a spot where withered technology just doesn't cut it...especially if you want comfort. 1080p 60fps in VR is a recipe for literal motion sickness
Now that Meta is opening up Horizon OS to other hardware manufacturers, a VR headset might be affordable for Nintendo. There’s a 50% chance the Switch 2 is just a more powerful Switch. There’s a 50% chance the Switch 2 is a VR headset/TV console hybrid. You could “switch” between VR and traditional TV experience. A lot depends on what technology Nintendo can get for cheap. Nintendo won’t build a console that costs more than $350. If Meta opens its research and development, Nintendo could make a good headset for that price.
Vr tends to use motion controls, this was also done by the Wii which uses two IR LED in the sensor bar as anchors to be tracked by the Wii Remote IR camera, I think the Valve lighthouse system is similar. If Nintendo chooses to create a VR headset where a Switch 2 slots in then a higher resolution screen would be advantageous. Phone displays do already have high pixel density, including the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium with a 4K LED 5.5" display so that would be a decent pixel density. When running non VR games the display could be run at a lower resolution.
Nintendo could have semi-AR, where they forego the background coming from camera feed, but it still maps digitally into the SPACE where AR would happen. But this layer could be merged image-on-image onto streamed content from the TV, instead of camera feed. I want a mesh system of Lens of Truth consoles. One looking glass in one or each hand, like Vive controllers. This would enable taking a creature like Pikimin OFF the TV, and hold it in your hand. Two such consoles in each hand could simulate complicated movement like shooting a bow, even without a TV in the background, but with the bigger game running they could stream the zoom footage into your hand. They would indeed be each their own console since it would require quite a lot of processing synergy. Probably around $200 each, and a standard Switch to run games on the TV. But it would be quite viable as the main function would rely on streaming a video feed, sort of like SNES mode 7 and superimpose it onto places in virtual space.
VR / AR would be great, but I'm less enthused about the concept of a "metaverse." It's a bit of a vaguely defined concept with vaguely defined benefits. A concept that I liked a lot better was to have a VR markup language with a VR internet of sorts - which was the concept behind VRML back in the '90s. Something with open standards, rather than being designed behind closed doors in large corporations.
I love vr, and Nintendo building in the space would guarantee a bright future with great games, but I don't see Nintendo entering vr happening. It's too isolating of an experience. Parents have no clue what kids are doing. Many people get motion sickness, only way around that for now is super wide field of view, which is expensive at the moment.
I'd like to see a smart cheap tech move from Nintendo, like making lenses that reproduce VCR TV effects and produce video output accordingly. In that way they might be able to trick our eyes into thinking we have better video output than they're actually allowed to regarding the device's raw technical power. (Using the same principle that makes NES/SNES games look way better on a VCR than they do on a modern screen)
I hope they don't go this way. Add-on's never really take off and having VR/AR games and 'normal' games just splits the catalogue. This would have to be a core feature of the machine and included from the start. I'd love the switch 2 to have a brand new original feature/gimmick but I don't want to wear a headset or have to go for a walk.
Nintendo has been working up to this. Virtual boy, nintendo 3ds, the controls of the switch two in both hands. Delay the switch 2 as much as you want. Nintendo will make the ultimate all in one system. All in the palm of your hand
I wonder if Nintendo will fire on all cylinders and release three models at launch. Lite model at $300, bare essentials, digital-only, pocketable; it competes pricewise with the Series S. Switch model at $400, Switch form factor, more advanced Joycons, bigger battery. It competes pricewise with the PS5 digital and Steam Deck. VR model at $500. Switch model but with an OLED screen + a VR headset with its bells and whistles, added internal memory. Competes pricewise with Meta Quest 3.
@@nintendoforecast Maybe not at launch. The VR model could be the mid-gen upgrade. Still, I think they're onto something with streaming content from one console to another. Imagine mixing Remote Play and DS Download Play. There have been hints of Nintendo supporting a second display in firmware updates. I can imagine a "smart dock" that you can stream games by using your Switch (like a reverse PS portal or a dock-shaped Chromecast). They could revisit some Wii U concepts like asymmetric gameplay.
IMO Nintendo should use VR like they use TVs, as something that is already there, but not part of the Nintendo product. You don't get a TV with the wii/switch/game cube/nes etc.
I think VR would be the most likely way we would ever see games like Nintendo Land return in any form. A VR party mode with the TV as a second screen is basically what the Wii U attempted to do with asymmetric gameplay.
Nah, not happening. They already tried it (and saw it fail) with Labo last time round, and the total failure of Sony’s attempt this time round show there just isn’t that much appetite among gamers - those that do have real interest are almost all on the Oculus Quest 3 (which is great because it is entirely focused on making VR gaming easy and convenient), and that isn’t the sort of mainstream audience Nintendo is interested in in.
I believe Nintendo won't do VR but I do believe they will do Mixed Reality similar to what the Quest 3 is doing as people have already modified Mario 64 in Mixed Reality and other games and Nintendo haven't strikes them down yet so I think Nintendo is looking into these video's as it gives them a glimpse of what can be achieved with their own titles
Core VR - The main problem for that for Nintendo, particularly, is that VR kind of needs 90fps in order to avoid having major problems with motion sickness. Some Nintendo games run at 60fps sure - Splatoon, 3d Mario, Mario Kart. But a lot are firmly in the 30fps camp - Zelda is the particular notable one here. The Switch 2 would need to have 1080p 90fps output capability for VR to be a _core_ feature of the system, and games that make use of that. Core AR - The form factor of the Switch vs the DS and 3ds (and, well, phones) makes that a bit odd of a prospect. VR and AR as a side feature used in some games? Yeah I can see them doing that again. Though I think you're overestimating the appeal of 3d movement in VR titles - The VR games that seem to do best in discussion of VR games are ones where the player is stationary, either completely stationary or stationary within a cockpit. To the point that most games that aren't stationary implement teleporting movement to reduce motion sickness. That reduces metroid from being the obvious option for me - Instead I'd point to the likes of Star Fox and F-Zero. Given the popularity of Beat Sabre, possibly even a VR Rhythm Heaven revival. Also Pilot Wings, which Nintendo tend to use to showcase new display tech would be a reasonable fit - Having previously used the series to showcase Mode 7 with the NES, 3d graphics for the N64, and 3d display for the 3ds, (And, as an outside option, I know some people love VR art packages, so a revival of Mario Paint might also happen with a 3d display)
Never bought the switch, but if Nintendo pull their finger out and finally release a decent console with good VR capability then I'll come back to them. Rehashing old tech and old games with very slight mods put me off Nintendo, but if they put the games in VR I'll be in.
I'd like it very much if the gimmick was some kind of AR/VR, it also seems to be the right time to do it. I mean, if they are able to make it good and affordable at the same time.
I'm going to be dead honest. While I would not be surprised if there was more of an official VR shell kind of like a sturdy, better plastic version of the labo VR shell, I doubt they're going to do it. Everything that I heard they're going to do is that they're going to try to have their cake and eat it too and following. Basically Sony's model by the first year year and a half to have banger, traditional games with the tablet and the TV. Then in Like summer of 2027 or early 2008 they're going to debut this device that's about 20 in across. That's basically a much more advanced thorough working hologram projector. Not science fiction. It's based on reflective Tech that had been around in prototyped back in 2015, but Nintendo and a bunch of other companies have figured out a bunch of kinks in it. Able to dock the Switch successor into it and you will have 20 in with about a foot high tangible three-dimensional looking objects that you can walk through 60° around and apparently each panel side can also show different 2D and 3D images depending on where you look at it. Apparently Nintendo's solution to the arvr thing because the biggest problem that they have with it that I agree that Apple's actually running into now is that you can't share it with other people Nintendo dominates by having mainly people gathered all around their device and this would be able to give that in-person 3D holographic look without having one person or only a couple of people looking at a tiny screen and or one person only having one screen strapped to their face. We have it worked like a TV where you can stuff as many people as long as they have eyeballs and enough room in the building to look at the same spot in two dimensions. They want to do that in three dimensions and apparently that's the strategy. Games like the next Luigi Mansion game. The first true next gen Pokémon game and others are apparently going to be built around this Tech, although they will also run normally on TVs because Nintendo's. Also very much well aware that they can't be making accessories into features anymore or if it's an actual gimmick it needs to blend stimulusly with what someone does and not Call attention to itself like it did during the 3DS and Wii U.
I don’t think so. The screen res of the console won’t be enough for good vr. I’m sure that is the first thing vr and tech enthusiasts will point at. It could give a bad rap to the console. I would like tp be surprised with their next gimmick tho. I hope it is at least interesting and useful.
And it will probably run on android xr platform which the software will be shown next month at Googles show and are making the mirco led screens for the headset as the screen will be made by a company called raxium owned by Google
I have no doubt that Nintendo will be the first out of Sony and Microsoft to embrace VR. Whether that will be with the “Switch 2” I am much less confident.
I think you are way off the mark with VR. Nintendo would have to release a standalone product for good VR. 1080p isn’t even close to high enough resolution for comfortable VR. Have you tried PSVR? The resolution is so bad it causes eye strain after ~45 mins. I’ve owned almost every new VR headset at release and I’m confident that Nintendo will realize they need a standalone product. of Somewhere around 1800x1800 per eye is the level it would need to be at. A drop in switch doesn’t make sense because of weight distribution. I think Nintendo is far off from a vr headset because of the current limits with standalone VR.
Yeah PSVR was very straining on the eyes. I tried a Quest and I pre-orded the Quest 2 because I knew how big of a jump in Rez it was. Quest 2 is still good and the price is ridiculously affordable now.
Ehhh, I'm not crazy about it. The Switch and presumably Switch 2 already has a gimmick: the portability. If they wanted to make a peripheral that lets players use some form of AR, that could be something sold separately down the line. But I think it would be a mistake to bake it into the actual design of the system because it feels like too much of a gimmick for the sake of having a gimmick. Nintendo already has a third-best-selling-console-of-all-time formula with the Switch. I'd rather they not try to confuse it when they simply don't need too.
Great video and I would be interested but I just don't see this happening at all. VR has been such a huge bomb. PSVR2 was essentially abandoned fast, Facebook lost billions in VR development and nearly every other company who was making VR sets have... stopped. Nintendo has such an award winning successful concept with Switch that they will almost certainly not attempt to risk significantly changing the formula to VR which has been a proven failure at this point. Nintendo, like most all companies are all about the money so Nintendo will play it safe. We'll get a more beefy Switch with a small new gimmick. No VR capabilities at all but I would love to be wrong. Remember the Nintendo ON? Lol.
if you’re the only one using the headset then it’s impossible. herpes is only spread from person to person, so you could maybe get it from sharing headsets? but again in isolation it’s practically impossible to get it. now… that’s not to say there isn’t other risks from not regularly washing or cleaning (i wouldn’t know) but herpes isn’t a major concern.
People seem really happy with the Quest 3. I like my Quest 2 but it's about 15% too buggy. Quest 3 is more powerful and seems to have fixed the bugs, and Meta claims average usage is way up on Quest 3. The software is getting there, with Asgard's Wrath 2 being the first true AAA title. My personal favorites are Walkabout Mini Golf and Red Matter 2. Apple's device feels a bit silly to me as they eschew gaming. VR headsets are gaming devices first and foremost IMO. And they're not "the future," they're niche - for certain people and certain types of games. Anyway, Quest 3 is $500, hard to see people accepting something less advanced. I agree that an addon, even from day 1, is possible, but it'd be gimmicky (and using old tech as you say), no way it'd be a main selling point. I'm even skeptical of Metroid Prime 4 being a great fit. FPS work really well on TVs. A better fit for VR would be new mario golf/tennis games, endless ocean, etc. Large scale, immersive environments, and slower movement (or less movement, like tennis) are ideal.
When I initially used vr my eyes mildly hurt and I got some motion sickness but after maybe 4-5 hours of use, it entirely went away permanently. Part of it is definitely getting accustomed to it. That said, vr technology has progressed much further these days and if it's hurting your eyes, it's most likely to do with below 70fps. (60 is fine but some still find nauseating in games that have lots of movement).
screens hurting your eyes generally come from focusing too close. When you are in vr you dont have to worry about it because you are focusing your eyes at a normal distance
I've owned two VR headsets and while it's an amazing experience it is also uncomfortable. Both headsets were quickly put aside once the novelty wore off. There comes a point where you just don't want to strap yourself in for that isolated experience. I know my experience isn't universal but neither is the positive view that always seems to dominate in discussions like this. I think this is why VR will never be the default. You don't really get people who can't/won't use normal game controllers but many dislike VR headsets.
I've noticed a lack of a hard number forecasts in this one? Is it because a realistic percentage of Switch 2 launching with VR is zero? As to AR, its more tempting but I don't think there's much wiggle room for systems that don't work in both handheld and docked mode. Maybe as another card in the deck but not as a main selling point. Afterall, technically speaking even the PS2 and 3 had variations on AR tech.
I really hope so, at the moment Meta is the only VR platform with consistent releases but their QC isnt great, I tried a meta quest 3 but it was really buggy so I had to return it 😢 Nintendo could do great things with their IP in VR, and they wouldn't give up on it immediately like Sony with psvr2. If they want to do VR, I think they should build infared lights into the joycons and add cameras to the switch. This would enable good 6-DOF controller & headset tracking in VR/MR, while also being useful for other stuff in case the VR headset flops, such as AR in handheld mode, eyetoy/kinect style games when docked, and accurate wii-style pointer controls that don't rely on a drifting gyro/sensor bar.
Nope Nintendo have patents of a stand alone headset they are making with Google and its not a switch device its ment to be its own platform and will be compatible with the switch 2 In someways like it can play switch 2 games and uou could play with switch 2 players
I REALLY hope this wont happen, I get unbearable headaches and VR sick under a minute of using it and 40% of population does too so ig no nintendo vision pro 4 u lucky ones
I. Sure. Hope. Not. Worst thing about being a nintendo fan is seeing them waste time and effort into stuff that ultimately just lowers quality of games and ends up being abandoned mid-gen.
If Nintendo goes forth adopting dei quotas?, which is inherently racist they can no longer expect a single penny from me. I would rather learn how to build hardware and software for myself and friends than see Nintendo self implode and undo all that was passed down generation to generation. What would you forecast in such a world?
A lot of people immediately reject VR thinking it “has” to be a first person immersive experience with developers making niche experiences like that all the time. yeah, Moss and Demeo are amazing.

A 3DVR sequel to Nintendo Land would be the greatest thing in the world!
they better just make it a neat little gimmick like gamecube compatability for the wii and not force it onto us like the wii u gamepad
The gamepad was optional for like.
80% of the games
The gamepad was optional and the wit's gimmick was motion controls.
The switch 2 looks as powerful as the quest 3, and that console has some great looking games. The screen res is my big issue but the tech is there.

Quest 3 is also VR.
MR just means a device that can do both AR and VR.
There was a rumor of the Switch 2 having a 120hz screen though.
where are you getting this info? 😅
Quest 2 has default fps is 72 and it's the most bought headset.
Never bought the switch, but if Nintendo pull their finger out and finally release a decent console with good VR capability then I'll come back to them. Rehashing old tech and old games with very slight mods put me off Nintendo, but if they put the games in VR I'll be in.
Pikmin VR .... hoooo boy I need this
I'm all for it. Nintendo VR sounds amazing.
said the metroid fan /j
YES thank you
Ehhh, I'm not crazy about it.
Lol.
I think Switch 2 may have sum AR features but I don't think we'll get a VR system until 2032
You forgot to mention that without regularly cleaning the lens, VR googles, glasses and headsets can give your eye herpes.
If you dont clean them, you cant see the game your playing
I'm sorry to report that about 2/3rds of the world's population under the age of 50 already have eye herpes
if you’re the only one using the headset then it’s impossible. herpes is only spread from person to person, so you could maybe get it from sharing headsets? but again in isolation it’s practically impossible to get it. now… that’s not to say there isn’t other risks from not regularly washing or cleaning (i wouldn’t know) but herpes isn’t a major concern.
But if you share it with a girl, you'll get cooties instead 😂
There's plenty of successful FPS in VR. I mean Half Life Alyx 😅
if anyone can make vr really work, its the big n!
I never tried VR
I’d love it but I’m worried putting a screen on my face will hurt my eyes lol
There are forecasts at the end although I admit I've worded them expansively to cover a lot of AR/VR eventualities.
If it does don’t force us to use it
I sure hope not, PSVR2 already bombed so hard that Sony had to stop production
VR fad is over, if Nintendo does this it will be a Wii U 2
Would prefer AR.
I really hope they won’t go into VR to be honest
no.
VRが好きではあない。しかし、次の任天堂ゲーム機本体がVRを採用するなら、それは任天堂にとって物凄いことですが、俺はVR技術に興味がない。
I hope for no VR
Sony failed at AR. XBOX won't touch the stuff. I don't see Nintendo being successful at this...
Playstation eye toy wasn't a flop.
I get motion sickness from normal nintendo games as is..😅
No
No, it won’t. Because it’s not something that appeals to everyone and Nintendo is all about “for everyone”.
it'll attach to other HMDs - no way N is going to sell a switch and a VR headset #switchATTACH
I really hope not
I. Sure. Hope. Not. Worst thing about being a nintendo fan is seeing them waste time and effort into stuff that ultimately just lowers quality of games and ends up being abandoned mid-gen.
VR is dead
If Nintendo goes forth adopting dei quotas?, which is inherently racist they can no longer expect a single penny from me. I would rather learn how to build hardware and software for myself and friends than see Nintendo self implode and undo all that was passed down generation to generation. What would you forecast in such a world?
Well , get the hell outof here then.
This is a nintendo channel.
We dont want nothing to do with that opinion at this moment at this video.
We NEED Star Fox 64 3D HD VR. I've been asking for this ever since Labo came out. I want it...
Thats a long name
Now imagine they make it an AR game, too...
