*Tip here as well!* When following people in, take into consideration the kind of bike they are riding. A shorter travel or hard tail will clear jumps at a lot slower speed than an Enduro or a DH Bike. The lippier the jump, the more this applies. So when asking some one to tow you in, find someone with a similar travel bike. Will save a lot of nose casing and collarbones. Cheers!
There was a table jump near me that I was clearing without issue. Then the local digging crew hollowed the middle and made it a little higher but not longer. Now I'm to scared to send it. I loved that jump.
@Djazzy Djeff Unfortunately the video I'm remember for in my social circle is of me hesitating at the last minute on a small drop and then eating a massive amount of s@#!. My wife tried to turn the audio of it into a ringtone.
@Djazzy Djeff haha true, although for some reason my head likes to play tricks on me and makes it seem like it's higher due to the drop either side of the jump 🤦♂️
there's 6f gap jump near my home, and for years I was terrified to hit it. after crashing my bike, snapping it, getting a new bike and watching this video I am so stoked that I can finally hit it, thank you!
Most other mtber I’ve ever met who are clearly experienced have never seemed friendly, just look at you like you’re a peasant 😂😂😂 the ones who are not so experienced are always bang on though, says a lot 🤷♂️
"Like I said it's a sh***** of a day"... Love your honesty, mate. Gaps terrify me and I hesitate brake and ruin my chances most times. Usual sized normal jumps I am fine on now and worked my way up. Just need to do the same on the old gappage. Cheers mate, love this video!
I ride this spot often and that last rump always scares me. It frustrating that before I had a 8 year hiatus from riding rumps like that were easy. Thanks for giving me the confidence to try it again.
I decided to get over my fear of doubles in 2009. Came up short. Went over the bars. Broke my back in 3 places and was nearly in a wheelchair. Never attempted a double since
Perfect! There's a double that's been hanging over my head. I know I'm ready for it, it's just the biggest jump I'll have ever done! If it were a table, it would be totally fine
you should do a video on how to case jumps, how to tackle something that goes wrong?... learning how to absorb a short leap (which is gonna happen) would be hella handy.
What I like to do, if the trail supports this method with enough space, is I like to jump to the side if it's not a big jump and I feel comfortable landing flat. That way I can gauge whether or not I can make the gap if it's the first time I try that jump.
I am always hearing instructors telling me to keep my heals down so I don't slip off the pedals but then I watch videos like this where all of that has clearly gone out the window.
I used Blake's measurements on a video he did for a kicker ramp build and built myself one. That helped me tremendously to conquer my fear of gaps. Now my fear is attempting a gap when the lip of the jump is steeper. It's almost like I'm scared I'm gonna slow down as I'm going up the face, scrub off speed then case the attempt!🤦🏾♀️
How about show us how to actually jump, the techniques and body positioning?? GMBN tutorial how to jump a gap jump - get a bike and just send it. Brought lots of confidence in many riders 😂
Please do a video showing the math. Bikepark gaps were designed for a specific speed but not all gaps are "designed". When riding blind and alone you need to stop and do the basic math before the "send". I think we are ready for Newton's laws of motion and a more complete summary of trajectory or flight path.
About three weeks ago I cased a small double really hard as I was using someone else's bike and didn't want to just send it with someone else's bike which I'm not used to, so now I pretty much have PTSD from that lol
Hey Rich, my last question just made me think... how about a little (or maybe a not so little) series on older mountain bikers. We’re not the athletes that we once were but still love to ride.
Seriously, I used to be an okay rider but age has taken it’s toll. I want to ride like I used to but... I see the deterioration. I love to ride but occasionally I just feel old. Is there a place for us in the GMBN world?
@@richardpayne5176 Thanks Rich. I really do appreciate your support. Fact is I’m really excited about spring coming on here In Saskatchewan and riding again after a hard Covid winter. I’m definitely going to challenge myself and hopefully be able to make some road trips this season. I’m a hard core GMBN fan
@@richardpayne5176 just a little addendum to my last comment. I think I need a good crash, not a bad crash, to get over myself. The fun is in the risk. Talking about it to someone halfway around the world is pretty cool. Thanks again.
So it's all great advice etc., but would really help is if you give some idea about the actual speed in relation to the gap length you are clearing. use those fancy Garmin devices you have in GMBN.
Hi gmbn. hope you can respond on this, i have recently found my self needing to teach my friends certain skills on mtb, it would be very useful if you make a video on how to teach your friends mtb skills.
Great video! Short of being towed in how do we gauge speed? Bike lengths is helpful but nose casing the backside of the landing is still going to end poorly. Ask me how I know : ) Any advice? Lower angle jumps will give more distance than height but man gaps are scary. I will jump the biggest stuff at the bike park until I see a knuckle : /
I'm more worried about fudging it up and scratching/snapping my frame or buckling wheels or bending my forks on my expensive bike that I'm going to be paying for each month for the foreseeable, can't really justify just buying a new one if I break it and don't want to fork out for some of the bigger items. If I break it, I will have no bike anymore. That's usually what is going through my head and the conversation I'd be having with the other half and kids. "sorry guys, no holiday this year because dad needs to spend the money on some new forks" I wouldn't be popular.
In my 40's now. Riding in the mountains since I was little. Doing proper enduro for the last 4 years. Still can't mentally free my self. I guess it's a me being in spd's and freelancer (crash and I am without income) problem :(
Bruh my country is so bad for mountain biking the biggest jump here is probably like 20 ft and that's a a proper bike park and yall in America england etc got like 40 foot jumps at local spots😅
Not sure if people are aware, but that “hit the jump 3 times” felt like a Parkour reference to me... since that’s how we do it. If you can only hit it once, you can’t hit it at all.
It doesn’t matter how many times I ride Fort William I always stop at the river gap. I just panic and my son, work and ability to pay the bills just flash into my brain so I stop! 🤣
Richard has quickly become one of my favorite host.
Thanks dude

I was about to try and clear a double in the morning, this is perfect timing
@@turkey5320 good luck man!
getting towed in by someone who knows the speed makes it way easier to mentally conquer
How do you get someone to towed in
Step 1 check how big the jump is
Step 2 DEATH GRIP
Step 3 GO AS FAST AS POSSIBLE
Step 4 DONT CRASH
Step 5vif you crash make sure your bike is okay
perfect recipe for any feature
Step 6: find out your Freind wasn't even filming it

This is me to a tee. Can send the table tops but as soon as there's a hole in the middle I'm out haha.
@Djazzy Djeff This is very true lol
I'm the opposite to a degree. Have no problems hitting gaps of a bike length of so. But struggle with tables of the same size
