Great video, crazy how riders strengths and weaknesses can differ so much. You hit stuff all the time that I wouldn't touch but for me gap jumps are not too big of a deal and I hit those at SC all the time. Really fun watching you progress through them!
Great video as usual Allen. I also like how you express how you are dealing with the challenges psychologically. I met you and Kelly again behind the coffee shop at Skypark a few weeks ago. I wanted to follow you down Comet.
@@mtb_alan I told you I would buy you lunch if you let me follow you down Comet. You said that wasn't necessary. Then I screwed up the courage to just do it.
Good job!! I always found it helpful (if you have skilled fast friends) to follow my friends down a jump line matching their speed and look off the jump. When I have done this it was always great. Cool video 👍
Just very recently found and subbed your channel. Stoked to see a couple of my favorite local gaps from Loma Linda Hills in your intro! Love your videos!
Really enjoyed that video. That was really fun watching both of you try to overcome those challenges. Let’s face it, gap jumps scare the shit out of all of us. I think the best way is to just have a good friend lead you into the jump. That way at least you have the visual in your head of them making the jump and you get the benefit of getting the right speed going in. Kudos to you man that was a lot of fun
MTB Allen your channel is awesome. I’ve watched a lot of them for tutorials and they’ve helped a lot. I’m usually riding solo so it’s hard to progress sometimes. But taking it slow and staying within my skill level I’m up to clearing about 6-8 foot gaps.
Excellent video! It's great to have a mix of skill levels so that someone always has some experience to provide. Definitely a hurdle what unlocks tons of potential.
Yew! Glad you overcame your fear! On trailforks the "rehab" trail is called beer run. Locals may have a different name of it but that's what I tell myself the trail is called.
Oh man! I was smiling ear to ear with you after you cleared that whole jump line! And holy smokes, that last gap chasm is scary. So cool to see you hit it! ✌🏼🤟🏼
Heck yeah man! Loved the video , lovef the editing. So awesome to clear gaps, feels so awesome to concour fears and send it! Im definitely not to your level but the gaps are so fun! Btw so awesome meeting you at sedona mtb fest!
I always avoid jumps.....scares the crap out of me. But in order to get better, I had to do it. I took a clinic with Rich Drew over the weekend in San Diego and all of the repetition gave me the confidence that I needed to jump. Definitely know how you feel when you were clearing those gaps. I'm not ready for gaps yet, but the same concept applies from my weekend learning. BTW, we met the president of YT North America. Really cool dude, gave us all some really cool headwear!
💯 I didn’t approach gaps until I was really confident on tables. Nice. Jeff is out there a fair bit. Chatted with him just after filming Jason doing the one-footer. Nice dude.
Oh yeah, I unquestionably had this experience, though nothing nearly so dramatic as gap jumps. That I'm still working on. But, near my house, there's a frolf course that has some interesting MTB-able features. There's a ten-ish foot high plateau which has a tee-off on it. On the west side, there is a moderately steep descent off the plateau and down to the paved path. I spent about an entire week coming here and just chickening out for hours at a time. Finally, I was right on the lip, and I decided to just put my feet on the pedals, which I did and it carried me safely to the bottom. I was very stoked. When I first started jumping it was at a local BMX park, so it wasn't as impressive as this, but that was pretty cool as well.
yeah after breaking my collar bone a few years back i been scared of gaps but is really all in your head i guess the trick is to be relaxed and dont panic right before hitting the jump

that run is sick! the camera does not do them justice. they are much larger in person vs what is perceived in the video. they have added even more jumps, etc.

Nice man. I was there that day. We spoke in the parking lot before your rode. I still haven’t hit the last three jumps in that line. First 2 I do just fine.
I definitely took time go get really comfortable on table jumps and small doubles (with bike length gaps). And yeah...it's helpful to have a session line especially with a progression of gaps like this trail. I drive over an hour to get to this place. 😆
A great crew can really make a difference on your ride and progression hey! Stoked for ya on them gaps man!!!! We just recently started doing small gaps, hopefully keep progressing! 🤘👊
💯 Couldn’t have done it without that crew. Stoked for you on starting to hit gaps. I am still scared of them but clearing gaps and greasing the landing feels so good!
Absolutely LOVE that line in San Clemente, it's done so much for my gap confidence. Still haven't hit that big gap before Car Crash though :( Still working up to it!

Jumps always seem smaller on camera . That said my local Forrest has many gap jumps im absolutely terrified of , many big ones but a few gap jumps that are only 1 or 1,5 bike lengths. The jumps in your video seem so nice , mostly dirt jumps and no trees around , I'm terrified of the jumps in my forest because they're all build out of wood and if I don't jump off correctly of that wood lip it's gonna send me flying who knows where . If that was a table I wouldn't have any problem hitting it . But I have a 100 mm full suspension , and I don't even know if it's the best idea to be doing these kind of jumps with it . But thanks for your video , it gives a bit more confidence and shows how you move while flying :)
Yeah I feel you. Gap jumps are so mental! A bit more suspension would definitely be more forgiving and reduce the chances of crashing. I know for sure that that extra travel has saved me before.
For me, gap jumps were a pretty big mental block, until I just hit a few of them and realized that they arnt actually any different than tables. Only difference is that there's just less work for the trail builders so they can put more effort into making sure the lip and landing are perfect. As long as you have the right speed (which is why you get someone to tow you in) and you don't treat gaps any differently, you'll be fine!
I was there with my buddies at the beginning of hole in the fence. That canyon gap is scary. Not crazy about trying that. I think one of your buddies came close to eating s##t on it. I have no problem with the beer run gaps but that one scared me. Good job on your channel!
Thanks Pat! Yeah...that gap is a bit weird. It's not the kind of thing you can just rid off, you gotta pull some, the landing is flat, and there are hazards on the other side. Annnnd it erodes and grows a little bigger every time it rains. TBH, I don't know how many more times I'll do it now that I've done it twice. 😅
Thanks! Except for the bit with me talking in the beginning, it's just a GoPro HERO10. But it's also about the settings, editing, and color grading. I did a video on my settings. Ahh!! So just more speed for bigger gaps!?! Found when seshnin baby gap, each jump felt different from awkward pulling of bars or trying to boost. Was seldom adding more speed. Will be back at it next week then. Alan going totally RAD! on that first infinity gap!! Way to go man!! 🦅 Got # for a good tow!?!, Asking for a friend. 😁
😆 Thanks! I’d say it’s less about more speed and it’s more about the right speed. I actually over-jumped the 5th jump the first time I hit it. And that can be just as risky. But I’m definitely not yet the person to be towing anybody in. 😅
damn i never got the courage to hit that same line. Looked at it a bunch of times though. but recently moved to the Bay! if you ever head this way lmk!
Don't do his at trails you didn't build, but at some spots it helps to put pallets or another structure between the gaps to get your confidence up. Once you feel good you can remove the pallets.

Hey alan🙋🏻♂️, just a question,,,after your wrist injury do you use some kind of brace at ur wrist? I did broke my wrist at a gap jump some time ago🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I never focus on the gap, I just focus on the landing spot. I have jumped plenty of gaps without ever looking at it. It's almost easier in that I don't talk myself out of it.

Normal pressures. Suspension open.
@@mtb_alan love the videos brother!
Hey alan🙋🏻♂️, just a question,,,after your wrist injury do you use some kind of brace at ur wrist? I did broke my wrist at a gap jump some time ago🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Yeah! I’ve been using the Mobius X8. I love it.
Man I wish we had trails like that around here. I'd be to chicken shit to hit them, but I wish we had them...
I had to work up to it.
I never focus on the gap, I just focus on the landing spot. I have jumped plenty of gaps without ever looking at it. It's almost easier in that I don't talk myself out of it.
Good tips! 🙏🏾
I'm a bit of a perfectionist I wouldn't say that was a level up in terms of skill but definitely confidence
Hmmm…maybe I’m missing something. I don’t recall saying anything about leveling up my skill. 🤔
@@mtb_alan wow a response from the guy himself.
