Those little creatures aren't even cute, I am an animal lover but when they damage your home it is time to convince them to move.
I've seen videos of people who flush out clogged drains. They use high pressure hoses and rotating cutters, and they've unclogged some real messes. Time to call in the professionals!

Yes, high $$$$!! I did see a video/short where a man use a heavy tire attached to a heavy metal pole and pull it using a machine from the other end. I know Phill can push a tire thru that drain. But use that concept to attempt to break it down. A high powered pressure washer can probably help to get it started.
@@annaibarra3447 Professional unclogging and repair of the drains won't be cheap, but repairing the damage to the chateau won't be cheap, either.
Yes, I used to work for a drain company that sent cameras down drains. Jetted, used a rotating cutter to clear roots and relined the drain if necessary.

One of the more common nuisance critters for our riverbanks and farm ponds around here is the muskrat. Our local agriculture dept offers a bounty on their hides and it is quite common to find young school age boys willing to come out and trap for them for free. If their populations aren’t kept in check it creates a plethora of problems for farmers and livestock, etc. You sound a bit exasperated at all the new tasks you are uncovering to add to the list of tasks already at hand. Here’s to hoping you find someone to work for you or with you to keep up with the load… I always seem to accomplish much more myself, when I’ve got someone around.
I would turn that patch of land into a mini meadow with wild flowers and woodland bulbs

@@Wren9 you obviously have never seen one up close. I did while visiting Mexico. They are very large rats with big teeth and claws. I would never call them 'cute' and certainly not 'nice'.

Love how you are solving the drainage problems. And identifying the trees contributing to it. Great sleuthing skills. Living with and understanding the environment of your property is crucial. You are inhabiting your space. Embrace it. You aren't flipping a property you are creating a home.

Time to rent a drain auger or snake. Or consider purchasing one so that you can use it to perform quarterly drain maintenance. Too bad the nice work inside that was done, now has to be redone. It's time consuming and expensive.

You should contact a local wildlife animal rescue and get them to relocate the cute water rats.
You also should have had you own Simon and Yanis.
You’re always the first to help others, I wish that a gang could come to your place and help you out for a few days or a week .
Later on I hope you will consider taking in volunteers, I’m sure some people would love to come and help out.
Of course without expecting you to host and cook all the meals . And people with real skills!

The Nutria (water rats)are a very diatructive invasive species the local government controls the dispatch and removal of. There isno relocation. One of them attacked the dog.
The cute water rats are an invasive species (called Nutria in the US) that the Mayor office in his area is eliminating. These are animals the French are actively trying to kill.
Problem is he doesn’t want to share his house with anyone/volunteers etc. he doesn’t want to employ others either . So he just has to soldier on his own
did you miss the episode when those 'cute water rats' ripped up Lightning and he had to have a Vet stitch him up? I have seen these critters close up years ago while visiting Mexico. Nothing 'cute' about them.
In France Coypou (Ragondins) are pests. They are exterminated, not sent rescues/sanctuaries. Phil's local farmer's wife would make a lovely rillette from monsieur Coypou.

Leaks are the worst. We currently have a roof leak around our chimney - again. 😢

Sounds like the drain exits will need "future-proofing" to prevent animal access after you have dissolved the mud plug. Wishing you luck in tackling this dirty situation.
At least Lightening doesn't mess with them since he had his nose bit. Do be careful Phil taking that grate cover off. Nasty critters have got to go. With all the rain and the moat was almost flooded over a couple of times the water may have backed up through the drains also causing water damage, if the water table has risen and the drain is under the water level that might be a new issue that needs to be sorted, cleaning out the bottom of the moat to make it deeper or adding additional drainage above the water level?
You must call the professionals to unblock the drainage. Cut the bloody trees that are blocking or destroying walls.

I’ve rented big fans and heaters that the carpet cleaning companies use to help dry things out.

Pressure washer in drain and a cage at the other end.Rinse and repeat until mud and rats are gone. Add drain covers to keep rats out.

Argh ! Drainage can be such a big problem and sorting it out so difficult on older properties.

I recommend you block the entrance to the drain pipe that the rodents are now using for a den. If they are inside after you've blocked it ...great! Leave a few days and then place a live trap( with food )inside the drain and wait overnight. The critters should be in the trap by morning. Relocate or give them a magic pill. A high pressure hose( ie fire hose) could be used to blow out the dirt and clear the drain all the way to the pond. That should work at least part way. You might still have to shovel the worst of the dirt out of the grated end of the pipe.
Question...do the rodents have a flat tail( like a beaver) or rounded tail( like a rat)? I think you might have muskrats....they are mean and will attack and bite. Be careful.
I am glad you are still working to improve your beautiful home and the grounds there. Those critters are everywhere in Louisiana .They are called Neutra I think.
You can buy a high pressure drain hose attachment for the pressure washer that will help to loosen up the dirt. If not then drainage rods with the screw attachment on will also help loosen it up
I am enjoying this new perspective on maintaining and renovating the chateau

Perhaps an auger bit attached to a drill to break through the mud in the drain. Then a truck that could pump water forcefully through the hole. Similar to a fire truck.Then cover the entrance with a grate as well so they can’t get in there. Wear a mask with a respirator and eye cover because you never know what kind of disease or bacteria is in there. Is there anyone that could help you ? Hope it works out. Plumbing jetter down the drain, a grille over drainage outlet & it’s end of those critters getting in. They’re a nuisance now you’re in full damage control & you’ve got plenty of other stuff to progress.
I would think you could get a professional Roto Router type of company to clean out that drain by running a snake through it. They use them to clear out sewer pipes in the USA.
Damp is such a mare. I would do as you are saying but also look at some sort of grid over the output hole so they can't get back in again, its not like there is no other space for them
The critters have to go. Hope the drain is easily rodded and cleared out. A drain auger up their jacksi will get them moving out!!
Phil our local Marie always arranged the culling of the coypu, even on our private lake. Hope this is the case in your area.

Put a high power water hose down and set up your camera at where you think it will come out so you can see how much and what comes out. Better warm weather on it way and will dry things out. Good luck!

Phil you have worked so hard to make your home beautiful. Hate to see what the water is doing to your morning room. Could you dig out that drain or use pressured water to clear it out. The other way is to dig out the whole drain and replace it. If you can get it cleared out put a screen were it is going into your moat. That would stop anything crawling in. Also can you trap the river rats? I know my neighbors would shoot them. I lived in the country up north. How ever they might have a nest in that drain with there young. Shame I do not have shares in the company ;-) agree with the fir trees causing so much damage our friends had fir tree damage in their garden roots going through sewage pipes cost thousands of pounds to repair. Could you hire company with a high pressure water pipes to flush out the drainage pipes?
aswell as the drain being blocked up planters on the facade might also hold water that will come into the building. i also notice the driveway seems to have been slightly raised higher than originally intended and covers the bottom step to the entrance. a higher ground level may also contribute to water coming toward the walls
Can you dig some out and try a jet wash to push the soil out though the drain

That’s concrete render which was sprayed over the original lime render so it’s still ok underneath but entire building needs it removing!
I seem to remember that the water levels were really high a few weeks ago. The water may have made it easier for the Coypu to access your drain and block it up. It really is time to get rid of the critters before the water does even more damage to your lovely chateau. I also think this might be a job for a professional team. It would be good to get a plan of the drainage system so that you can maintain it properly.
Phil install some sort of metal screen over the moat entrance...after you clear the pipe...maybe a power washer can assist in rinsing out the mud out of the pipes.. have fun...
Can you Literally flush those pesky little blighters out? maybe from the other end? If water can loosen up the nest they might move on.

Put a garden hose up inside the drain, from the mote, and turn it on, eventually it will clear out what is stuck inside. Good luck
High pressure hose them out and then put a grill over the end near the moat.

Can you roto rooter out the drain pipe? I was wondering if you set up motion lights ... Though you mentioned they are out during the daytime, I was thinking they were nocturnal. I am sure as time permits clearing back the cover of plants around the moat might help. Bless you Phil 🙏🤗💖
Maybe put a mesh over the part where the water comes out into the moat.
And then hopefully the leaking will stop on the inside and dry up so you can have those 2 walls repaired.☺️👍

Well done, Phil! A field of wildflowers wouldn't need to be down, but they do tend to get weedy, don't they? I've a contractor coming Monday to give me an estimate on some damp wall rot here as well. I need it fixed so I can sell the house.
