“Too many men.” 1979. Legendary Dang-It. Although make sure you clarify that Cherry’s bowing to the crowd happened earlier in the game, not after that call.
I never realized this until the NHL uploaded the game recently...the Bruins were playing with six guys with a one goal lead and 2:40 to play in game seven, which was about to break up the Habs' 70's dynasty run. Sums up Don's career pretty well, even though it likely had nothing to do with him.
How about Gretzky giving away the puck at center ice, so that Steve Yzerman could score from behind the blue line and end a seven game series in double overtime. That's a double dang-it in the most important game of the year by my favorite team.
Oilers literally needed that 1 point which later led them to game 7 of the cup finals with a injured starting Goalie... that one miss took that city on a ride.
OVI-Wan Kenobi you’re copy paste button getting sticky bud? Stepan has the most embarrassing play of all time, this series isn’t what is the the most important dang it of all time, it’s what makes the player say “dang it” the most
You can't do this legendary series without covering the "Patrick Roy got caught Hot-dogging!" clip. The rivalry, the attitude of that era, you have got to cover that one.
You have to go way back for this one, but highly recommend the 1982 Harold Snepsts pass up the middle with just two seconds remaining in the first period of overtime of the first game of the finals against the Islanders. I was actually living in the USA at the time and being a Canucks fan I was desperate to find a radio station that was covering it as the local area did not televise it. I managed to receive a very faint radio signal that faded in and out. I enjoyed what I could hear and when it came time for the Snepsts goof it was extra painful from the fading in and out. Static/ssssssssss... ¨Snepsts is behind the net with the puck, looking to just hold on the the puck with time running out¨, Static/ssssssssssssss....Crowed cheering wildly, Ḧe threw it up the middle and now the Islanders lead with 1 second on the clock¨. Static/ssssssssssss
Definitely Stefan’s gaffe; the 1988 Boston Garden power outage; the final game for Roy as a Canadien; the Gelinas goal that wasn’t; Marian Hossa losing in the Cup Final two years in a row (2008 and 2009); the list goes on. But here are some for thought.
To be fair to Steeve Smith, he may have been responsible for that goal, but Edmonton should have put Calgary away 20 times over earlier in the game. The Oilers got overconfident in 1986 and never really played with a sense of urgency.
For another Dang-it Steve, I think The High Stick is worth addressing once and for all. Gretzky clippin Gilmour Game 6 1993, Leafs vs. Kings - NO CALL. Good on ya, stay healthy bud!
I had cheered for the Oilers as my team after that Rockies moved to NJ. I jumped on board at the right time. I remember this game. Well. The way he crumpled to the ice...heartbreaking. But to quote the old Chumbawumba song, he got knocked down, but he got up again. I don't remember any own goal ever winning a Game 7, so, yeah...big event. But as for Gretzky being stopped from 5 straight...do we really think he was any the less The Great One with just 2 X2. Kudos to Smith...your name is on the cup, and you get Steve to talk about you as a bonus.
3:36 I don’t know how Steve Smith scoring on his own net makes it 3-2 Oilers while also losing them the game but you learn something new every day. Right Steve? Dang it
I can remember the big debate in Edmonton after this goal...was it Smiths fault?....or Fuhrs?.... myself, I couldn’t believe people wanted to blame Fuhr.
I have a suggestion: I forget exactly how long ago it was, but there was a weird John Carlson goal where he dumped it down the ice, got a huge ricochet, and Vokoun was already way out of his net and it goes in.
Legendary dang-it : There's got to be several that prompted major rule changes (moving past face-masks for goalies, requiring helmets for players, other rule changes like the goalie box, stuff like that). Many of them were born of dang-its; it's time we paid homage.
As. Blues fan, can think of two dang-it-able events: Gretzky handing over the puck at center, and Bergevin THROWING the puck in his own goal. Oh, and MacInnis breaking the goalie’s hand with his slapper, but that’s more of a daaaaang it, wow.
Pittsburgh Penguins Frank Pietrangelo’s “The Save” in ‘91 Game 6 against Peter Stasny and the Devils. Man had a wide open cage but shot it into his glove. Not to mention he was a backup goalie. Dang it!
Need a montage of Dang-Its involving the glass breaking or popping out The first ice hockey game i ever went to was Bruins vs Oilers in October 2018 (Bruins won 4-1) and I remember the glass being popped out into the audience
Brodeur's own goal in game 3 of 2003 Final. Oh and the Patrick Roy one where he lifts his glove to celebrate, but doesn't have it in his glove so the Red Wings score. Gotta love goalies haha.
Being a fan of the powerhouse Oilers in 86, I just ASSUMED that Edmonton would win the cup again... but those pesky flames were relentless. Game seven, 40 minutes in, the score is tied, so whoever wins the third period wins the series (making the previous 6 & 2/3rd games basically irrelevant...) ... Calgary doesn't even score an honest goal in the last 20 minutes, and they advance. WEIRD! While it was horribly embarrassing for Smith to make that error, blame the rest of the usually high-powered Oilers team for failing to score themselves out of the hole. Man, that result messed me up for an entire year.
Legendary Hat Pick - Keith Primeau's 5OT game-winning goal in the longest game in modern NHL playoff history, five overtime periods for a total of 152 minutes, against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Patrick Stefan's blunder is not even in the same league for what was at stake in the moment. I watched this on TV live from a pub in Toronto with another Western Canadian ex-pat who was cheering for the wrong team. He laughed. I died. The intensity of that series was legendary. That Flames team was the team purpose-built to stop the unstoppable. And they finally did. And you have to remember, with the talent on the ice in that series, 2-2 deep in the third was a shut-out by today's standards.
Really like this type of content. Oilers score with 1 second left because of a dallas(?) forward botching an empty netter - I think should be your next dang it:)
Imagine looking at your goalie and realizing you just threw the puck in your own net. Your heart sinks, all the blood in your body suddenly rushes down to your shaking legs. You turn to your left and this 6-foot man in red sweater with a glorious mustache is yelling and celebrating. No wonder he dropped down to the ice in humiliation. I can't imagine how bad he must've felt.
That might be the worst play, but for biggest Dang-its, I can think of three non-plays that top it. #1 Flyers vs Sabres fog game in the Stanley Cup finals in 1975 #2 New Jersey Devils get the government to overturn their head coach's suspension and in response the officials refuse to officiate the game in the 1988 Conference Finals #3 Postponing a Stanley Cup game in 1988 in Boston and moving it to Edmonton because of a power outage
Technically not a "dang it" play, but for Penguins fans, blowing a 3-0 series lead against the NY Islanders back in 1975 was a heck of a "dang-it" for the franchise. The Century Line, Lucky Pierre, strong D, Penguins were actually REALLY GOOD for the first time, and dare I say it, Stanley Cup contenders(?). I remember WIIC's sportscaster Sam Nover talking about probably having to "face the Stanley Cup Champion Philadelphia Flyers in the next round" after going up 3-0 against those (dang) Islanders. It took a LONG time to recover from that, both the franchise and the fans. Hey, if the Penguins weren't terrible in the early '80s, we would have never gotten to draft 66!
