OK something just hit me. His Targ didn't "run away." His wife killed and probably disintegrated him, and just told him he ran off. in a world with tricorders and orbital sensors, they should be able to locate the creature easily. The look on Sisko's face says it all: he knows, he just doesn't have the heart to say it in so many words. "Lady Sirella draws the first blood..."
Very unlikely. That would be seen as a dishonorable act even in her own mind to lie to him like that. Its more likely that she did leave the door open and hoped the targ would take advantage and run out. But i dont see her trying to goad it into leaving or doing anything else.. Just... pardon the metaphor.. "leaving the door open for it to walk though". and 'hey, if it happens, it happens'.
jg hertzler as martok is probably my favorite recurring character in all of star trek. the only others i can think as coming even close of are mark lenard as sarek, andy robinson as garak, and john de lancie as Q. this is such a great scene, exactly the sort of thing you don't get in star wars. just two guys talking - but such great, colorful dialog, and fantastic, almost dickensian-level character writing. avery brooks' reactions in this scene are priceless. this is star trek at its best. general martok, of the klingon defense force, slayer of romulans, who walks across broken cardassian corpses like the rest of us walk down SIDEWALKS, is HENPECKED. perfect.
ST writers often worked to make other species more relatable to the 'human condition'... Odo's description of compromise in a relationship is another great example .
The Female of the Species Rudyard Kipling 1911 1 When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride, 2 He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside. 3 But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail. 4 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male. 5 When Nag the basking cobra hears the careless foot of man, 6 He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can. 7 But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail. 8 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male. 9 When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws, 10 They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws. 11 'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale. 12 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male. 13 Man's timid heart is bursting with the things he must not say, 14 For the Woman that God gave him isn't his to give away; 15 But when hunter meets with husbands, each confirms the other's tale -- 16 The female of the species is more deadly than the male. 17 Man, a bear in most relations -- worm and savage otherwise, -- 18 Man propounds negotiations, Man accepts the compromise. 19 Very rarely will he squarely push the logic of a fact 20 To its ultimate conclusion in unmitigated act. 21 Fear, or foolishness, impels him, ere he lay the wicked low, 22 To concede some form of trial even to his fiercest foe. 23 Mirth obscene diverts his anger --- Doubt and Pity oft perplex 24 Him in dealing with an issue -- to the scandal of The Sex! 25 But the Woman that God gave him, every fibre of her frame 26 Proves her launched for one sole issue, armed and engined for the same, 27 And to serve that single issue, lest the generations fail, 28 The female of the species must be deadlier than the male. 29 She who faces Death by torture for each life beneath her breast 30 May not deal in doubt or pity -- must not swerve for fact or jest. 31 These be purely male diversions -- not in these her honour dwells. 32 She the Other Law we live by, is that Law and nothing else. 33 She can bring no more to living than the powers that make her great 34 As the Mother of the Infant and the Mistress of the Mate. 35 And when Babe and Man are lacking and she strides unchained to claim 36 Her right as femme (and baron), her equipment is the same. 37 She is wedded to convictions -- in default of grosser ties; 38 Her contentions are her children, Heaven help him who denies! -- 39 He will meet no suave discussion, but the instant, white-hot, wild, 40 Wakened female of the species warring as for spouse and child. 41 Unprovoked and awful charges -- even so the she-bear fights, 42 Speech that drips, corrodes, and poisons -- even so the cobra bites, 43 Scientific vivisection of one nerve till it is raw 44 And the victim writhes in anguish -- like the Jesuit with the squaw! 45 So it cames that Man, the coward, when he gathers to confer 46 With his fellow-braves in council, dare not leave a place for her 47 Where, at war with Life and Conscience, he uplifts his erring hands 48 To some God of Abstract Justice -- which no woman understands. 49 And Man knows it! Knows, moreover, that the Woman that God gave him 50 Must command but may not govern -- shall enthral but not enslave him. 51 And She knows, because She warns him, and Her instincts never fail, 52 That the Female of Her Species is more deadly than the Male.

@@piotrd.4850 do you really think that any other country that had a Versailles thrown on them would not have wanted to get back at them? I am in no way DEFFENDING the atrocities committed during the 30's and 40's, but we have to remember that late 19th to early 20th century Germany was in a place and time like no other, they were never given equal treatment on the world stage before WWI and were often treated like a child that should be seen and not heard or not seen at all, they were blamed for a war that in hind sight could not be objectively blamed on them and was forced to pay for everyones costs as well as their own, and territory that was long theirs was carefully stripped away for maximum humiliation such as Upper Silesia and separating East Prussia. If France had lost the war, been forced to admit total guilt, pay unpayable reparations, and had Verdun separated by way of territorial losses the French people would have had their own Nazi party rise to power.
Toh Domion arc is what made DS9, the excelent supporting charactors including Nog, Rom, Barile, Winn, Garek and Martok all helped but Martok was only realy arround after mid season 5, before that all his appearances had been as changling Martok not General Martok so I would not say he saved the show, it was clearly going to keep going without him.

Not to bring up policy by a former Egyptian dictator but one of the ONLY FEW POLICIES that Mubarak made into law that ACTUALLY WORKED WELL was the requirement of anyone who wanted to be married to spend at least a few days with their significant other meeting with a marriage counselor. Not only did it cut down on the population growth of Egypt, it also raised the rate of successful marriages. I think it should become law in the USA as well as India and China as well (it it isn't already).
Whoever thought this could happen? Watching the TOS movies Enterprise and the original series you'd think the Klingons and Humans would be blood enemies for all time. And yet heres Martok and Sisko talking casually about relationships.
Reminds me of Robert W. Services' poem: "I have clinched and closed with the naked North, I have learned to defy and defend. Shoulder to shoulder we have fought it out, But the Wild will win in the end."
Martok was somewhat a wronged character in Deep Space Nine. It is really pitiful how Kor pulled the rug from under Martok's feet and came out on top at the end. Kor acted with no honor and didn't deserve the end he had. Martok is one of the most honorable and loyal Klingons ever depicted on a Trek series.
By the way nobody noticed that sisko is black because he is so well acted and written that he becomes the sisko emissary of the the gods. You can fucking bet she will. God, I love that woman.
His reasoning isn't that far from the truth I have always thought that marriage was like a war but its you and your partner against the world not you against them. At least not most of the time
I get the impression that "Lady"Sirella is a bit of a snob. "Supervising the unloading of her bags", for example, little hints like that. It says all the more for Martok that a common man without any noble blood married a snob from the upper classes - especially in Klingon society.
With women it is about respect. If not, then you better learn how to duck when she throws a cast iron skillet at you. Klingon women just know how to handle their men well. KAPLA!
Honestly, if I had serious allergies and my boyfriend wanting us to move in together and dumped his dog/cat/etc, I'd dump the boyfriend. If he's dumping a good, loyal member of his family for me, I want nothing to do with him. If he dumped my pet due to a 'mistak'e, I'd start sharpening the knives.

His wife killed and probably disintegrated him, and just told him he ran off. in a world with tricorders and orbital sensors, they should be able to locate the creature easily.
"leaving the door open for it to walk though". and 'hey, if it happens, it happens'.
jg hertzler as martok is probably my favorite recurring character in all of star trek. the only others i can think as coming even close of are mark lenard as sarek, andy robinson as garak, and john de lancie as Q. this is such a great scene, exactly the sort of thing you don't get in star wars. just two guys talking - but such great, colorful dialog, and fantastic, almost dickensian-level character writing. avery brooks' reactions in this scene are priceless. this is star trek at its best. general martok, of the klingon defense force, slayer of romulans, who walks across broken cardassian corpses like the rest of us walk down SIDEWALKS, is HENPECKED. perfect.
Martok was my favourite recurring character, because of J.G.Hertzler's fantastic performance.
Ds9 klingons are so warm and friendly. Best bar buddies in the galaxy.
Martok may have just given the best and most accurate description of marriage to ever air on TV.
Martok for president!!!!
I had totally forgotten about that clip. Man that is EPIC! Great stuff, thanks!
ST writers often worked to make other species more relatable to the 'human condition'... Odo's description of compromise in a relationship is another great example .
The Female of the Species
Rudyard Kipling
1911
1 When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
2 He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
3 But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
4 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
5 When Nag the basking cobra hears the careless foot of man,
6 He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can.
7 But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail.
8 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
9 When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
10 They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws.
11 'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale.
12 For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
13 Man's timid heart is bursting with the things he must not say,
14 For the Woman that God gave him isn't his to give away;
15 But when hunter meets with husbands, each confirms the other's tale --
16 The female of the species is more deadly than the male.
17 Man, a bear in most relations -- worm and savage otherwise, --
18 Man propounds negotiations, Man accepts the compromise.
19 Very rarely will he squarely push the logic of a fact
20 To its ultimate conclusion in unmitigated act.
21 Fear, or foolishness, impels him, ere he lay the wicked low,
22 To concede some form of trial even to his fiercest foe.
23 Mirth obscene diverts his anger --- Doubt and Pity oft perplex
24 Him in dealing with an issue -- to the scandal of The Sex!
25 But the Woman that God gave him, every fibre of her frame
26 Proves her launched for one sole issue, armed and engined for the same,
27 And to serve that single issue, lest the generations fail,
28 The female of the species must be deadlier than the male.
29 She who faces Death by torture for each life beneath her breast
30 May not deal in doubt or pity -- must not swerve for fact or jest.
31 These be purely male diversions -- not in these her honour dwells.
32 She the Other Law we live by, is that Law and nothing else.
33 She can bring no more to living than the powers that make her great
34 As the Mother of the Infant and the Mistress of the Mate.
35 And when Babe and Man are lacking and she strides unchained to claim
36 Her right as femme (and baron), her equipment is the same.
37 She is wedded to convictions -- in default of grosser ties;
38 Her contentions are her children, Heaven help him who denies! --
39 He will meet no suave discussion, but the instant, white-hot, wild,
40 Wakened female of the species warring as for spouse and child.
41 Unprovoked and awful charges -- even so the she-bear fights,
42 Speech that drips, corrodes, and poisons -- even so the cobra bites,
43 Scientific vivisection of one nerve till it is raw
44 And the victim writhes in anguish -- like the Jesuit with the squaw!
45 So it cames that Man, the coward, when he gathers to confer
46 With his fellow-braves in council, dare not leave a place for her
47 Where, at war with Life and Conscience, he uplifts his erring hands
48 To some God of Abstract Justice -- which no woman understands.
49 And Man knows it! Knows, moreover, that the Woman that God gave him
50 Must command but may not govern -- shall enthral but not enslave him.
51 And She knows, because She warns him, and Her instincts never fail,
52 That the Female of Her Species is more deadly than the Male.
@@missprimproper1022 You're welcome
I cannot hear his name without thinking of the vile and racist things he said about pre-WWI Germans during the hysteria that gripped the continent, same thing with Churchill but he expanded it to ALL ethnic Germans who were scattered across Europe.
Parts of this really didn't age well, did they?
@@williammerkel1410 History - and Germans - had proven desicively that he understated the case.
This is why DS9 was so great. It allowed the Star Trek universe to get to know the other races better.
Martok's view on marriage is closer to reality than any other character's view.
You have to love that Sirella was SUPERVISING the unloading of her bags... No way the great lady would bother bringing in her own luggage.
Well, Sirella is not the average Klingon girl next door, she's part of Klingon "nobility" if we can call it that way. So she has servants probably.
Sisko, Martok, Garak, Jadzia, Ezri, Bashir, Quark, Nog...DS9 had such great characters.
Of course she will win.
Had to come back to this after hearing Discovery claim they're "humanizing" Klingons. That is a statement that draws a "how fucking dare you" from me.
Blind Side agree there’s not really any strong characters that are Klingon like Ds9 did Martok and Gowron
TNG and DS9 already did that....
They always do Martok.. They always do.
Martok....the quintessential man. (Klingon) LOVE, FEAR, and PASSION.......KLINGON STYLE. I would LOVE to see his “shoulder rock”.......
Martok was my favorite character next to Garak. Those two saved the show! t would have died without them.
Hardly.
Btw, Sirela is the mother (Anna Morgan) of the cursed girl from The Ring. For those unsure of who, she's the woman brushing her hair in the mirror in the VCR tape.
i just loved the relationship between sisko and martok. both were great friends
When He said, "She Will Win the War" That is the story of my life.
Such a great character
Marry a Klingon but make sure you live close to a hospital when you are a non Klingon. Jadzia found that out on DS9!!!
Jadzia gave as good as she got. Even Odo commented that Worf spent as much time in the infirmary as Jadzia. :D
And Quark....much to Bashir's TMI chagrin. :-)
calm down
Quark found that out the hard way too.
Oo-mox from any other woman won't satisfy him anymore.
Whoever thought this could happen? Watching the TOS movies Enterprise and the original series you'd think the Klingons and Humans would be blood enemies for all time. And yet heres Martok and Sisko talking casually about relationships.
The Organians were right. The Klingons and the Federation would be good friends.
Reminds me of Robert W. Services' poem:
"I have clinched and closed with the naked North,
I have learned to defy and defend.
Shoulder to shoulder we have fought it out,
But the Wild will win in the end."
He was my all time favorite Star Trek character because he was so human but wanted to be noble.
And the whole time i never once thought about his skin even on episodes about black discrimination all I know was I needed to see more.
In fact the stories of captain Nog are hart breaking because we will never get to see it.
The fact that you brought it up means you thought about it.
@@BrotherDerrick3X this was tree years ago…I wonder what the main startrek conversation was back then I wonder???
Look at the post date please and say something about my post in plan English please.
Best speach by Martok on marriage was to Worf....
Martok and Sisko are both excellent field commanders. They are courageous, fearless and loyal to their soldiers.
@ringmaster316ms I can see that in a commercial: "Can switching to Geico really save you 15% or more on insurance? Does a Klingon make a terrible marriage councillor?" I see Bat'leths being involved! :)
How Klingons deal with domestic disputes:
"Three rounds, no punches below the belt, no jewelry, BEGIN!"
If you need marriage counseling talk to martok
"Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. #Chang Yu tells us that in ancient times it was customary for a temple to be set apart for the use of a general who was about to take the field, in order that he might there elaborate his plan of campaign.
The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose. " Sun Tzu
Also Ron Canada, who was Ch'Pock in "Rules of Engagement", was a finalist for the role of Martok. Of course, J.G. Hertzler who is a friend of Ron Canada's got the part.

The precise moment that Sisko has the frightening realization that the Ferengi and the Klingons have much more in common with each other than ANYONE ever expected....

Martok is awesome
i am only starting to get this. no matter how many battles i win, she will win the war. god i love this series.
Sisko's look at 0:54... amazing.
Martok must not have known that Sisko had been married once before.
Martok is a very wise klingon, indeed, with great honor
This story is one beer and a pickup truck from being a country western
Sirella "accidentally" left the front door open!
you can literally HEAR the qoutes xD
Its remarkable that martok compares a marriage to a war.
How accurate
If the woman you choose to live with for the rest of your life does not have both the skill AND the determination to kill you in your sleep, you are either weak, too young to be married, or have chosen the wrong woman.
God Dammit, I love a woman with steel in her. I will be extremely disappointed in my wife if she does not emerge victorious in our little war, but honestly I have nothing to worry about. She will. You can fucking bet she will. God, I love that woman.
Spoken like a true klingon.
STOVOKOR!
QA'PLA!
Spoken like a true Blue Pill Mangina
Awwww, do the widdle girls threaten you? Pathetic.
I've always loved how Martok feels it is necessary to qualify his obvious sentimentality over the Targ by saying "Filthy, mangy beast".
His reasoning isn't that far from the truth
I have always thought that marriage was like a war but its you and your partner against the world not you against them.
At least not most of the time
I get the impression that "Lady"Sirella is a bit of a snob. "Supervising the unloading of her bags", for example, little hints like that. It says all the more for Martok that a common man without any noble blood married a snob from the upper classes - especially in Klingon society.
@edybeast That's what I like about Martok. He isn't just another klingon warrior who goes into battle, but he also quite intelligent
With women it is about respect. If not, then you better learn how to duck when she throws a cast iron skillet at you. Klingon women just know how to handle their men well. KAPLA!
Yes. A new series, set post-DS9, built around Martok, Garak, Bashir, and Nog.
Picard could make frequent appearances, and I'd be ok with that.
They win because they outlive us lol...
The first Klingon to lose a battle with pride- the prizes of Victory are still as sweet in defeat
Ahhh, you may be Klingon.
@@3Rayfire In this respect? Hell yeah!
Really liked Martok. Great character and really well acted
you know it's interesting when you first discover that Klingons talk about Marriages
Piriatehat their divorces are fun though
"Do me a favor, Ben. Remember this face. AAAAAAAAAAH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
marriage counseling martok style lol
0:45 did I hear quotes :D
And Kirk would definitely fit the Klingon ideal at heart if not deed. When he was presumed dead in one of the books, they even did the death howl for him as respect for a honored, fallen foe.
If a woman is moving in with me and I have a dog and she hates my dog then she isn't the woman for me.
and if you knew from the very start that she hates dogs then you should have never gotten with her from the beginning
@William Baker yeah doggy as a little useless furry thing the size of a rabbit that needs to be carried around from time to time?! In my book that ain't no dog!
For my marriage to my Lady it was " Love me, love my horse ". And do.
Other than Worf, Martok was the greatest Klingon of all...
Martok has a point a little Klingonified but he had a point men are allowed to claim their share of victories in battle but we women will be the ones to win the war
Just makes us men all the more noble, going into a war we know we'll lose, for the greater good. :) :D
Martok is 100% right.
The targ story actually made me a little sad.
heeh love these Martok/Sisko bro moments.
“Inside his bony breast, beat the heart of a warrior!”
He won more than his fair share of the battles throughout the marriage...maybe Sirella let him believe he won those battles?
