Yes, Mal plays some secret levels in upcoming episodes. We don't stay hard and fast on the "switch on shine/death" rule so she can have a chance to do them. When we first started releasing episodes of Sunshine, I read the comments and saw the outcry for it, but didn't worry because I knew she tackled them eventually. But because it hasn't happened _immediately_ and some folks are still upset, here's a comment to let you know: yes, she does some.
It’s worth mentioning, Stephen, that just because Sunshine gives you a tool doesn’t mean you have to use it, or even that it’s the preferred method. Sunshine’s approach is that for many objectives, the player should have the freedom how to navigate toward that objective or how to accomplish it. The Caged Shine was a great example: there were many different paths up the scaffolding; you could take hover to quickly return to a platform before you fell or use rocket to get back up quickly after a fall; or you could just use rocket to get the shine from the bottom. All this is to say you shouldn’t really think “well, the game WANTS me to do it this way” because more often than not, there’s many valid methods to the same objective in this game.
@@drystofiscalio7545 I guess it was just because the controls on the whole felt wonky to me. I'm not very good at video games, but I love playing them anyway. If I have to fight the controls themselves, it's a bit harder.
Don’t feel like you have to use a nozzle just because it’s there. The locations of the nozzles are often intended to make you go out of your way to unlock them, not because you’re necessarily meant to use them in that particular mission.
Fun fact: The rocket nozzle in this game has weird physics and you can actually store a ton of momentum with a glitch. Which means you can launch yourself really far, really fast.
I agree I played that level a million times back in the day cuz I liked gelato beach and I''d play levels over and over and just mess around and that is the first time I've seen them I wonder if they'll find anything else new
it's interesting to me that Stephen finds that red coin section of the secret levels harder then the levels themselves for me its the other way around i find the floodless sections really difficult but fludd makes getting the 8 red coins a cinch, i guess it's an example of how difficulty is subjective sometimes.
You can get distance with rocket if you jump forward while charging, instead of just staying in place while charging. Basically it then acts as a saving grace if you don't make your jump over just sending you straight up. 👍

I can feel the pain Stephen goes through on the secret areas, my palms start to sweat just watching (A+R+mid-air/jump is extremely useful for cleaning the goopy parts)
Hey Stephen and Mal, loving the series so far! Got a quick tip that might help. For pure height jumps, I would recommend the backflip rather than the spin jump. The backflip seems to give you just a BIT more height than the spin jump, and I feel like you get more control out of it than the spin jump. When backflipping, you know which direction Mario is gonna face after you jump, which helps immensely when trying to grab a ledge or hover at the peak in a particular direction. The spin jump, in my experience, doesn't give you that same 'oomph' or control. I could be wrong, idk if there actually is much of a difference between the jumps, but they certainly FEEL different in my opinion. I'd recommend practicing a bit with each jump to see which feels more comfortable for you! Thanks for coming to me TED Talk.
Going off memory I really think the earlier secret levels and corresponding red coin challenges are harder than the later ones. Like yea Bianco Hill sucks but like Noki Bay took me only a try or 2, Hotel Delfino was pretty quick, and despite being a weird mechanic the YEET level in Pianta Village is not nearly as difficult as people think.
I have never seen any of the mirrors move so irradicably. That may have been what that noise was. The fact that you guys didn't react to it at all made that very hilarious.
You know Stephen, while I totally agree that Sunshine has a lot of hard levels, you'll probably have more fun with the game if you don't approach it like it's a chore - just play the game at whatever pace ends up working and worry about the 100% completion stuff when you get to it. In particular, if you spend the majority of your time actively avoiding Blue Coins and treating it like an inconvenience whenever you accidentally get one, you'll just make the final hunt for all the ones you missed that much more annoying. As long as you make sure whoever isn't playing is ready to check any you find off your list, gathering them as you go (at least the ones you stumble across) should be much less stressful.
I'm sure they're a good few more episodes in and more comfortable with skills, but I certainly notice that they don't get much forward momentum to make the best of their platforming. Two immensely helpful maneuvers are the side flip in lieu of spin jumping at a lot of spots, as well as moving forward as much as possible with an initial jump before hovering, especially waiting until Mario is level with the destination platform to get the most out of each movement. Overall though, I'm glad to see the unique dynamic of two players who are not quite as experienced as most other people who LP Sunshine!
It is very weird hearing how difficult these two consider everything in this game. I mean some parts really are THAT difficult (I'm looking at you secret of the dirty lake). But the red coin challenges in the secret level with flood and red coins on the lake I always felt were quite easy. At least not hard to the point that it is angering like it seems to get Stephen sometimes. But each person has different strengths I guess. Either way, it is very fun to watch Stephen and Mal play any game! They are wonderful to watch! All I care about is that they are having fun!
I love mario sunshine, and I've been loving this LP. Sunshine is a weird, buggy and at times bad game, and the frustration and confusion from both Stephen and Mal is relatable and of course entertaining. I guess I'm just confused by the frustration of the comments. Isn't this what is to be expected of a casual Sunshine playthrough? Sunshine's just one of those games
Some people seem to remember Sunshine as a more stable game than it is, and that Stephen and Mal's struggles are more their fault than might actually be the case.
Cartoon Critic There’s also the fact that Mal is playing this blind and and Stephen hasn’t played in a while. I can imagine how playing this game blind can be a hard time. 😅
So tip for Sunshine to help make this easier: the Nozzle Boxes are essentially full water refills, so it can be more efficient and quick to jump on one if your water is low.

Wow I don't think I every went after the red coins in those levels, or if I did I blocked the memories somehow. Those look like a pain in the butt too do.
The red coins really aren't that tough. All the platforming is essentially negated because you can hover and one minute is plenty of time. The problem is that you panicked too much, and also don't utilize the side-flip, like, at all. It also seemed like you just made some bad decisions, such as hovering directly into one of the blocks. You have a time limit, yes, but it's still better to take a moment and orient yourself rather than rushing through the whole thing. You finished with eight and a half seconds left which, out of a sixty-second time limit, is a pretty big chunk. As weird as it is to slow down when you're timed, try to slow down a little. If you screw up while rushing, it'll cost you more time in the long run.
I'm not sure if you guys know but if you press Z then you can bring up the totals screen and see how much you've done in each level and it shows that every level has two secret shines.
* sees how much time was left when stephen got the last red coin for the secret mission up in the hillside cave * could've been worse stephen the timer could've kept going
Wow. I know this game is glitchy. There are plenty of glitches that consistently happen. That mirror glitch is not one of them. That was kind of crazy and I don't know how that happened.
Are you sure you played this game before, Stephen? You keep forgetting all of Mario’s abilities! I think it’s funny that at this point Mal has figured out the camera controls completely and Stephen is still struggling
They will do it at some point but they'd like to borrow recording equipment from Emile to be able to do it properly so it will still be a little while yet.
Hot take: though this is a fun LP, SMS is probably the worst main series Mario game and a sub-par platformer overall. The Blue Coins were a weird and bad design decision, it's definitely the most inaccessible Mario game, and the choice to make only a single nozzle slot makes it super tedious. I might be alone in this feeling, but I have never liked this game. Love just about every other main series Mario game, but I understand why this one just wasn't accepted by a lot of people. (And I didn't even mention voice-acting, which is... *shudder*) But we did get the Piantas... and they are super cute, so it's not all bad, right? Honestly, I feel like it would be wrong to call SMS a bad game, but it's definitely earned it's spot as the black sheep of the main Mario titles, IMHO.
MTan I do think Super Mario Sunshine is overrated. It’s quite difficult for a Mario game and it’s not a game I’d recommend for someone new to platformer games. The camera control is at times finicky. Also you need to be careful running out of water in many areas. Its one saving grace is how flexible it is on how to figure certain situations. It’s not an awful game and it definitely has ardent fans who love it but I can understand why there has not been a sequel made.
wallac I think I'd rather they pour their resources into newer, hopefully better games than just making old games again but shinier. I'm not totally opposed to a remake of Sunshine if such a thing were to ever happen, but if I were to choose between getting a new game and remaking an old game, I'd choose the new game.
Cartoon Critic I disagree. I’d rather have a classic become more accessible kind of like what they did with OOT and Majoras Mask on 3DS. I agree that it shouldn’t take away too much from development of newer titles but I don’t care if I have to wait an extra several months.
Yeah, I have no idea what those mirrors was doing. That was a new one. And yes, you did definitely fall through it. Dang though, so much disdain for the most liked parts of the game.
I kinda understand this reaction but I don't think the people who are saying this are thinking it through. You saw the 4-second clips of Stephen dying, right? Would the video really be improved by adding four or five instances of 4-second clips of Mal dying? Would those extra 15 seconds of video be worth however many more minutes of recording time and additional stress they would have to do? Doesn't seem like it to me.
Chaz yes because, the rule are after every death and shine got. We’re under the impression that they will both be playing the secret levels, I love there videos. So what there 15 more minutes, if there is heck yeah. More the Marier, people were looking forward to mal playing them too. And if they’d go the route of collecting the blue cones at the end. Then it should be after every 5 blue coins they switch. Stephen should not have to collect all the blue coins himself and well as do all the secret levels. Well mal get to do all the COOL levels. Plus Mario sunshine later level get way harder, so if mal doesn’t get more use to the control and the game by playing the secret levels now. It may turn into at the end Stephen beating them because mal doesn’t have the Practice
@@stochaztic I get the idea that watching Mal die might not be entertaining but I think just letting her try the pure platforming levels would help improve her platforming skills in general! The main levels are only going to get harder (i.e Noki Bay and Pianta Village) so having Mal improve her sunshine platforming skills now would help in the long-run, I think
MajorKerina I understand, but if that was the case then Stephen and mal should have did a other game. And waited on sunshine, sunshine is a belove Mario day and a heaven requested game. To finally play it just to make time
I've been enjoying the Let's Play so far, but it is starting to get irritating that a majority of the commentary is just "this is hard." Not that I think Sunshine is an amazing game or anything, but it has been tough to get through some episodes.
@@MajorKerina I know, but does that need to be constantly repeated in different ways? I love these two and I was just curious if anyone else felt the same.

Yeah, I don't hate this game, but I enjoy it the least of the 3D Marios by far.
Yeah this game really needs a remake
wallac I think I'd rather they pour their resources into newer, hopefully better games than just making old games again but shinier.
The stress and anxiety from the platforming levels...
Can i say first? HI STEPHEN!
Can anybody tell me if he plans to play Elder Scrolls VI (6) when it comes out??? I'd love to see that
@@MajorKerina yeah true, thank you
So sad mal not playing the secret levels
Strangething that what I mean, it we’ll take the pressure off Stephen and mal will be have a better time later on because she be more Practice
I mean, Mal is playing this blind and Stephen hasn’t played this in a while. You can’t really blame them for saying that the game is hard.
Yeah Sunshine is an incredibly broken mess of a game,
Sunshine is my least favorite 3d game I don't hate it or anything, it's just doesn't make any sense
