Tommy Lee Jones' ad libbed his "I don't care!" line because he had worked with a Real Life US Marshal preparing for the film, and he was told that US Marshals never get involved with the guilt or innocence of a Fugitive because that's not their job, that catching and bringing-in the Fugitive was all they should be doing... So when Tommy Lee Jones saw whatever his character was suppose to say, he felt "I don't care!" was what would actually be said...

Since you asked: in the US, there isn't a hierarchy of departments so much as there are separate governmental entities with distinct responsibilities. The US Marshals Service is a federal bureau that acts as the enforcement arm for the federal courts. They're most notable for running the searches for fugitives (naturally), protecting judges, and running the Witness Protection Program.
Most of this I initially learned from this movie; the rest I learned from 'Justified,' which I highly recommend.

    • @LogicalNiko
      @LogicalNiko 7 месяцев назад +1

@@jonathanroberts8981 US Marshals have a range of duties. They are in charge of courthouse security (and can employ other security forces and contractors for things like metal detection, courthouse night watchmen, etc). They act as jailers for individuals held in custody during a trial. They inspect vehicles and packages coming in and out of federal courthouses. They coordinate operations with the Department of Corrections officers. They safeguard and transport dangerous, important, or illicit evidence. They have full emergency task force and response forces (for example if someone were to make an assault on Federal courthouse directly or using biological or chemical agents). They coordinate national and international protection and emergency evacuation services for Federal Judges (i.e. An Article III Judge gets into a bad security situation while on vacation internationally). And as mentioned above witness protection and fugitive recovery. And yes witness and jurior security is also a big thing. They are specifically an arm of the Department of Justice (Executive Branch) but they a large part of their services is structured around protecting the US Courts (Judicial Branch). And of course, are a liaison to DHS, FBI, ATF, State Department, and the hundreds of other Federal Police branches that exist.
I worked for multiple Federal Courts districts as a creator of official policy and security advisor as for the Administrative Office of the US Courts on a national level. Several times in that job I had to both work with the US Marshals as well as coordinate emergency action procedures and plans between court staff, Judges, and the USMS.

Moore's role was supposed to be bigger in this movie, but her later scenes got cut (they were shot and were supposed to be on the special edition DVD but were pulled). And I think Jane Lynch's character was added to fill in those plot turns that Moore's character originally did, but I'm not sure. Much of the movie was rewritten on the fly--Lynch remembers working out dialog with Harrison Ford in their scenes right before they filmed it.

What made this movie so great was that the two protagonists were both intelligent which made for a harrowing chase. Julianne Moore originally was supposed to be Jones' love interest. The idea that there's ONE "best performance" of the year is kinda dumb to begin with, especially considering the different weight different types of roles have. You're more likely to win an award by playing a neurodivergent character, an iconic real-life figure, a soldier in a war film(bonus points if it's a war the US fought in) etc, hence the term "Oscar-bait". I think it's a good sign when the academy decides to award a man who can say that "henhouse, doghouse, outhouse" line without sounding silly. :D

This is the reason that her name is still credited as one of the main stars of the picture.

In 1993 I was a sophomore in high school & my Boomer parents remembered the Fugitive TV series from the mid to late 1960s. "A one-armed man killed my wife" was the classic quote from the show my parents told me. I had seen the movie trailer and was intrigued but probably would have skipped seeing it - I wasn't familiar w/ the TV show and had little interest in something inspired from the 60s.
But I was visiting an old friend and we had nothing to do. I had moved away to a different state & was back in town after being away from my best friend for almost 9 months. We roamed around the mall & went to the movie theater on the far end of the parking lot. It was a classic big screen movie theater; the type they never make anymore and didn't make that era either. It was a 2-screen movie theater, each screen was gigantic and the gently sloping floor went way, way back & could hold easily 300 people. I don't remember what the other movie was playing, but we decided to go see this movie since we had nothing better to do. My expectations were quite low.
I tell you now, I was blown away by this movie. Perhaps because I had set the bar so low, but from the bus to train crash sequence, we were hooked. Seeing it in a packed movie theater with close to 300 people was quite something. The writer, directing, and acting in this movie had no business being this good.
I'm usually quite informed about a movie before I go see it in the theaters, but twice I've gone to see a movie with next to nothing known about the movie and being blown away by how good it was. The first was this movie. The second was "Shawshank Redemption."

Simone, you picked up some many things I hadn't paid attention to before, like how the movie presents information. It all just flows at such a great pace that I've never had time to figure out what really makes this movie work so well. I love how real it all feels, and from a Finnish (and I figure Canadian) perspective, an additional cool factor is that the cold spring feels much more familiar than what we usually get in an American movie.
Movie recommendations: The Day of the Jackal (1973) is a game of cat and mouse with a somewhat similar realistic feel. For well-written characters in a realistic setup with incredible suspense and one of Pacino's greatest roles, Dog Day Afternoon (1975). A talky movie with great characters figuring out the details of a crime, 12 Angry Men (1957). And for something much more modern and action-packed, the first three Jason Bourne movies; just don't expect a single costume...
Andreas Katsulas, who played the one-armed man, was an amazing actor who *shined* in the classic 90s scifi show Babylon 5. Its 110 episodes might be too long for a reaction but I highly recommend it.
The actor of the "nice guy", Jeroen Krabbé, featured in a few of Verhoeven's Dutch films.

I like how you are contemplating what role Harrison Ford plays while the movie poster you are looking at says "Harrison Ford IS The Fugitive." :)

By the way, the trigger happy cop from the beginning is also in Office Space.
He’s the “I have people skills!” guy.

I saw this opening weekend in 1993 and caught it two more times in theaters. One of my all-time favorite movies. Tommy Lee Jones owned every scene he was in.

Was laughing at how you were looking at the movie poster trying to figure what role Harrison Ford would be playing when it literally says on the poster, "Harrison Ford is the fugitive"

I just want to mention Andreas Katsulas, the actor who played the one armed man. If you're interested and ever get around to it, he played a magnificent role in the tv show Babylon 5.

Oh YEAH. What made this movie so good was the battle between two incredibly intelligent men, who outsmarted each other at every turn. And I always think this film felt so incredibly REAL, compared to so many of today. You always felt like you were right in the middle - running with Richard and feeling his pain, and being on a chase with Gerard, determined to catch a criminal. One awesome movie. Incredible story, incredible characters.

A really great chase movie, with similar elements of avoiding the police, is Midnight Run, with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin.

Also, both movies have Joe Pantoliano!

I’ve noticed that Julianne Moore does that in a lot of movies where her character shows up for like 5-10 minutes but is still always essential for the plot. Paul is another example, and technically, Maude only shows up 4 times in The Big Lebowski too.

The officer that had to change his story when the shackles were found apparently jumped to conclusions, perhaps using a ... Jump to Conclusions Mat. As for Shawshank, this movie attempted to take the old Fugitive TV series and fit a decent story into a movie format.

I love how you went "Oh it's the Janitor!" There is an episode of Scrubs (season 3 Episode 8 "My Friend The Doctor") based around the fact that He was in this film.
