Ride Rate Review 35mm inner width on my ibis wheels. Haven't even ridden them yet because I just got the bike..my mojo 3..woohoo! Looking forward to seeing how they feel.
As always, great review Wayne! I bought new wheels DT Swiss spline 1500 XM for my Giant Trance and Maxxis Minion tires DHF2.5 / DHR2.4 and the difference is drastic!
5 yrs later everyone and its mom is riding on 30mm+ rims, I just received a set of 25mm xc wheels and I run Maxxis wt's or 2.4 vredesteins to round up the tread, I lean quite a lot in the corners and with the muddy autumn season it's a very fun combination...
I'm pretty sure that it would be really, really fun to party with this guy. Besides that, the video was really helpful. That said, it would be really interesting to mount the same tire onto different width rims, to see how different rim width effects the profile of the tire. It would be cool to know at what point a rim gets too wide for a specific tire (a standard, like a Maxxis Ardent, for example). Anyway, cool video. And the opening animation is awesome!
Interesting topic,as I have a Dartmoor 30mm irw rim with a maxxis 2.7 for dh riding,on the same bike I use a nukeproof generator tr narrow rim with a 2.3 for trails ,both front wheels have a huge effect on the bikes handling I have tried narrow tyres on wide rims and wide tyres on narrow rims. When you use wide tyres on narrow rims you get punctures from the inner part of the tube where the rubber is compressing into the narrow channel, however using a 2.3 continental on a narrow rim, it pulls the tyre bead in further with the adverse effect of pulling the side knobs round more so you get more grip cornering and the centre knobs sit slightly higher creating less drag on the straight.I find this ideal for fire trails and single track.I don't think the narrow rim can hold anything wider than a continental 2.3 very well.I don't know if this input is useful as I run 50 and 60 psi to try and reduce drag. I like the bike feeling twitchy on trails but grounded on downhill
I just got new wheels made in Finland (only way to make it fit my narrow bike frame) going from 21mm to 30mm on my fully damped electric bike with 2.2" tires, the difference was huge... Even with the tires rock hard full with air I could immediately feel much less vibrations on rocky roads that is a killer for my hands. After letting air out for 40 seconds riding was more like on a fat bike and the grip was also a lot better then with the old rims. Narrow rims on a mountain bike is just stupid for casual riding at least where comfort and grip is key.
Also, I found that when rim is wider they make its walls thinner to make a weight acceptable. You cant use it on some gnarly stuff because of it. If I like to shred on some rocks I can destroy it easely than some 25-29 FR/DH rims that can weight the same but with stronger thicker walls. I can pump the tire more to avoid dings but this is another story..... Most of wide rims are hardly for trail use.... :)
hahaha yeah they can be distracting, I used to shred guitar but have been fully committed & focused on building & improving the channel so they have taken a back seat for now, hopefully I can get back to them soon.
I have a stock rim which is possibly the usual width narrow for mtb. Then my wheels are forekaster 27 x 2.35. Does the width of the tires of 2.35 be more wider if i replace the rim with a wider one as well?
Awesome vid! I run a 30mm on my front tire and recently purchased (by accident) a 27mm for the rear. I run 27.5 tires. Should I be concerned with this setup? Thanks in advance!
I have pretty narrow rims (21mm) and maxxis ikons 29x2.2 came stock on my bike. I want to get minion dhfs for more grip but the smallest size they make is 2.3. Will that fit on my rim or is that too big
Just picked up some DT Swiss XM 1501 Spline One 25mm 29ers and I'm having second thoughts. Currently have 30mm inner on 2.4 Tires. Now I'm tempted on selling them and getting me a 30mm set. Sigh.
i am confuse on imperial and metric dimensions... my bike has a 26X20 label in the rim bed, i measured the internal width and it is measured 21mm... this rim is cracked.. i need a new one but i am in the US... so... i am not sure how to look for a new rim. I find a lot 26x1.75, which i believe has an internal width of 44.45 m... any advice is ore than welcome
My fully damped electric mountain mike has very narrow rims. If you do not have very high air pressure that is very uncomfortable when off-road they almost goes of the rim when cornering on tarmac or hard gravel and you loose grip even at low speed cornering... Now it has also started to break the spokes, 4 in a row on a slow 3km ride on tarmac. I see no other choice then buying new wider rims. I really wanted a fatbike but I could not find any fully damped electric ones. I have arthritis and when it is bumpy I ride slow as riding fast is very painful for my hands, it also the reason that I wanted a fully damped fatbike... But new wider rims with wider tires I will be able to make it like a light version of a fatbike as there is 1cm room on both sides front and back for wider tires.
Tire pressure is quite important and if you run fatter tires it will add some extra cushion when you're riding. You could also try some carbon bars if your hands are feeling too much trail vibration, they would dampen the chatter and help with the vibrations to your hands.
@@antiherobc I just got new wheels made in Finland (only way to make it fit my narrow bike frame) going from 21mm to 30mm on my fully damped electric bike with 2.2" tires. The difference was huge and it dampens the vibrations that gave me pain in my wrist very effectively. I am surprised that just going from narrow to wide rims made such a huge difference with the same tires. Now I will have to make the suspension stiffer as now I can ride a LOT faster over the bumps and it did bottom out a few times at the rear ;) Now riding is fun again.
I'm building new wheel sets. I weigh between 94kg and 100kg. I ride trails and aggressive XC hard cornering, decent/short downhill sections but lots of climbs too,a and all mountain style on my Giant Anthem alluminium 27.5. I am willing to get me 2 sets of wheels from DT-SWIss but I'm confused because I don't know what the difference 25mm and 30mm inner rim width looks like. The widest tire in my collection is a 2.35 ardent race, the rest are 2.3 and 2.2 and that's about as wide and as thin my tires get. Now, in order not to get that bell/hourglass shape or burp tires at low pressure, what inner width should I consider for the anthem both front and rear?
It seems very difficult to understand what rim width and what tire width will equal actual tire width in the end. With each rim and tire manufacturer having so many different standards. Is the only way to know what the end tire width will be is to actually mount the tire and the rim and then measure? For instance, I am curious about running a Light-Bicycle 30mm internal width rim with a 48mm Switchback Hill tire. However, my frame will accommodate 52mm maximum clearance. Will this rim and tire combination equal out to over 52mm? Is there any way I could figure this out before actually buying the rims and tires? Thanks
ah dude, I wish there was an easy answer but tire manufacturers make it hard for all of us. Trial & error is unfortunately the way forward. Seems many tire manufacturers have a different idea on their tire widths. I have found that Maxxis are generally slightly narrower in profile but a little taller than others like Schwalbe.
Nope. Plenty of downhill racers run 25mm rims. Unless you push your bike like they are, you don't need but 21mm. If you find that your tire rolls, you either aren't running enough pressure or just need a tougher sidewall.
maxim0200 I ran 25.5mm flow ex rims with pro 2 hubs for a year and they were great while they were on the bike, I retired them after putting a few dents and dings in them . I only had to true them twice in the year I ran them. I personally wouldn't run anything narrower than that.
Ride Rate Review I'm very interested in the truing side of the wheels local shops charge $90 to true and more to build, idea for a video a how to true a wheel for the average punter, how to do it, how true is good enough, when a rim is dead. Just a thought, hanks mate!
wow, $90 to true a wheel? thant is pricey. here you can get the wheel trued for under $20 a wheel build will cost around $40. I am also quite interested in the truing of wheels, I had one built the other day that came back really bad. It got me thinking of going to a wheel building class to learn so I can do myself. I'll look into it some more.
currently using Hope Enduro 29er 28inner, it worked great for Maxxis 2.3, good damping, so the ride is quite smooth, but this is not the case with Suomi Gazza Extreme 294 studded tyres in 2.1. I currently use Highroller 2 2.3 & Shorty 2.3, but narrower Suomi 2.2 studded tyre will feel like horrible no matter of the width, with a lot of vibrations, but studded are necessary for the winter, but I will research wider tyres, but max I can run is 2.3 cus of the frame.
Thanks for the information buddy, I'm curious to find out how plus size tires do in the snow. I have never ridden studded tires because it doesn't snow this side.
@@antiherobc I haven't decided if I should get 25mm or 30mm rim, I think a wider rim will help when installing the tyre with Cush Core on the rim, also probably help with installing DH tyres too. I still use the same 23mm rims, I tried to install and remove a Michelin DH22 2.4, I haven't ridden that tyre, but I just tested the installation and removal, the tyre require med keep the tyre tight and pop the bead on initially by hand carefully and work it on both sides then press the bead into centre of rim, but that was harder than regular maxis tyres, eventually I managed to seat it, but removal required two tyre levers. that tyre was probably meant for a 25mm or 30mm rim, not a 23MM, i know 2.30 tyres feel good on 23mm rim, so 25mm rim will be good for 2.4 I guess.
25mm internal works very well with 2.25. It's what a lot of pros use in the XC World Cup and I have the same combination on my XC hardtail. Very stable at high speed, hugely better than the 19mm I replaced which squirmed. Really improved the bike's handling. Not sure about 2.4 though.
I have not had 36 hole rims before but I am riding with stans flow mk3 rims and they are decent. I am pretty light weight now so can't comment too much about rims for heavy riders.
The bike is only designed for the wheel size it is supposed to have. If it's a 29 inch bike and you want to go 27.5 the wheels will fit but your bbq will be very low and the geometry will change on the bike. Rather keep the wheel size it was designed to use
you can yes, but don't go too wide, maybe 2.8. I've had 32mm inner with a 2.8 tire on and it was 100%. Never seen a 3.0 wide tire on there so I don't know for sure about that
I would not reccomend it, I have 2.2 on what looks like 19 - 17mm (hard to tell without taking of the tire) and it has horrible side flex making you loose grip when cornering unless you run very hard tires that is horribly uncomfortable in terrain and my bike is fully damped (the vibrations is a killer with that much air in the tires that is needed to keep it from flexing to much).
Wide tires on narrow rims = side flex and loosing grip to the point of being dangerous is my experience with 2.2 on what looks like 17-19mm rims (but it helps when tire is inflated rock hard but then it is horrible to ride offroad even on my fully damped bike because of the vibrations)... I am uppgrading myself to 35mm rims and wider tires on me e-mtb for better cornering on tarmac without the dangerous and horrible flex and better comfort when riding offroad.
I haven't tried blowing plus tires up on 25mm but I would say that you should look at 30mm internal width for 2.8' and possibly 35mm for for 3'. You might not get the ideal tire profile from blowing them up on 25mm rims.
up to a point rim width has next to no effect on tyre hight or width. There is a German site that lists different tyres on different rims with pressures. Going wide makes makes most tyres less efficient because they weren't designed for 30mm rims. Like boost and 29ers its mostly hype. I run a 24.5mm rim and have no intention of going wider. The conditions I ride in don't warrant a 2.6 inch wide tyre plus bigger the tyre the more rotational mass you have to humpf about. .
MTB Scotland Yeah, my rims are too wide and it's a pain to find suitable tires other than maxxis wt, where I stay. I hate being restricted to only buying those. My 32mm wheels are better than the super wides, tires blow up better. I was hoping to get the point across that there is a limit to rim width from my experience is of riding with super wide rims for the past few years. Although I liked riding plus tires I have had terrible luck with them and find their casings are very weak at present. I tear them up badly every time I ride them.
Ride Rate Review bro in law has 30mm Easton arcs and they square the profile off too much. I've got a DHR2 WT on the rear and it is slightly more rounded on my rim than the arc. Agree with the rolling though but that's only if you use silly low pressures which I don't. Continental and introducing wider tyres more suited to the wide rims but still too wide for the conditions i tend to ride in. Liked the vid btw
The German site in question being www.reifenbreiten-datenbank.de/ 😉 It entirely depends on users adding the tire dimensions though, so some tires are still lacking.
I've run a 2.25 wide tire on a 17mm rim. It has the dreaded light bulb look. Tire does work but washes out on turns. My bike shop recommended no wider than 2.04 in width tires on these rims or go wider rims to stay with the 2.25 tires and get better cornering. So far no lost beads on the narrow rims. Though I'm running tubes. Cheers
What rims & width are your wheels & what are your experiences riding them?

35mm ibis carbon rims on minion WT'S. Best tire combo yet, I demo'd a bike with this set up and was instantly sold and run them now
29-30mm inner rim and 2.3-2.5" inch tire. Perfector!
I have a hightower now but am wanting the santa Cruz reserve but with a internal width, is there any way I can run 2.6-2.8 on them?

When you meant narrow for xc, how narrrow? 19-23mm internal width?
I know it's late but in case you didn't know it's spelled narrow :) No hate or anything
30 mm rim with 2,25 tyre, is that ok? I think i have 20 mm rim now on my 29" tyre mtb, but backwveel feels a bit unstable when cornering.
Is 23mm width rims good for 2.2 tires? This is a 29er rims what i mean is is it possible to put 29x2.2 tires on 29er 23mm width rims?
Yeah you can run 2.2 on 23mm, you may have more tire roll.

Is it ok to use 1.95-2.1 tire on a narrow rim with an inner width of 12mm, 20mm outer width?
That's a very narrow rim, I have not ridden anything that narrow yet so I cannot comment. These mountain bike rims i am talking about
@@antiherobc right now I'm using 1.25 tire on that rim. Is it ok?
i need some advice, whats a good rim for a pair of shwalbe crazy bob 26x2.35 ( 60-559)?
I have used Stans Flow rims before with great success
2.5 and 2.4 tires to 28/33 inner and outer width rims. will it works ?riding enduro
I'd go for 2.5
Thats what i was searching for👍
I'm glad you enjoyed buddy
Great Vid. Do you think 2.45"-2.5" tyres will fit well on a 40mm Raceface AR40 rims?
Try get something like the maxxis WT range, they are 2.5 or 2.6
Hi can I use 32mm rims and 2.25 tires on XC bike??
I would'nt do that. The tires are too narrow, I'd use 2.4/2.5 tires on 32mm rims
@@antiherobc how about 28mm rims and 2.30 tires for enduro??
i have 3 inch tyres with fat rims. can i put 2.8-2.6 inch tyres on the fat rims?
how wide are the rims?
Very helpful thank you
You're welcome!
dude, nice Strat! When I come visit we should jam!
Thank buddy. Yeah dude, there will be plenty of riding & jamming
Hey dudes can you help me? I need 27.5 inch 36 hole light and strong rim.
What rims do you suggest for 35c tires?
I unfortunately only ride MTB at this stage so I cannot comment on that wheel size
Can you recommend some 29" (36hole minimum) aluminum rims that can carry alot of weight ?
I have not had 36 hole rims before but I am riding with stans flow mk3 rims and they are decent.
I am pretty light weight now so can't comment too much about rims for heavy riders.
Hey I’m wanting to change my 29 inch by 2 wheels for 27.5 will they fit?
The bike is only designed for the wheel size it is supposed to have.
If it's a 29 inch bike and you want to go 27.5 the wheels will fit but your bbq will be very low and the geometry will change on the bike. Rather keep the wheel size it was designed to use
Ok thanks 👍
Do guys what do u prefer ?
So wide rim is better?
I prefer wide rime for All mountain type riding.
Sir im planning to buy a 29x2.4 size tire what is the best rim size for the size of tire ty
Depends on what kind of riding you are wanting to do, for trail riding I would personally buy anything from 28 - 32mm inner width.
@@antiherobc sir in 2.5 tires Trail use what size of rim will fit
Can wide rim affect my frame 30mm frame small
usually it's mostly the tire width that'll affect the fit
Is 30mm wide enough for 2.8-3" tires?
yeah it'll be fine. enjoy the plus size, watch out for sharp rocks
Can I put 2.3 tyres on a 40mm rim?
You can but it will blow up weird and may not perform optimally. Sidewalls may balloon out and the tread pattern may square off too much.
Ride Rate Review Thank you. Can I put 30mm on a plus sized mtb?
you can yes, but don't go too wide, maybe 2.8. I've had 32mm inner with a 2.8 tire on and it was 100%. Never seen a 3.0 wide tire on there so I don't know for sure about that
Ride Rate Review okay, I was thinking of keeping my 2.3 tyres but buying 30mm or 35 rims
Cheyenne Cornett Ex fucking cause me?
Will a 2.35 tyre fit in a 17mm internal width rim
It should but there may be a little ballooning on the side walls.
Is 15mm internal rim is too wide for 2.40 tires
15mm internal is very narrow, I guess a 2.4 would be ok on there
Wide tires on narrow rims = side flex and loosing grip to the point of being dangerous is my experience with 2.2 on what looks like 17-19mm rims (but it helps when tire is inflated rock hard but then it is horrible to ride offroad even on my fully damped bike because of the vibrations)... I am uppgrading myself to 35mm rims and wider tires on me e-mtb for better cornering on tarmac without the dangerous and horrible flex and better comfort when riding offroad.
What’s the brand of those 29ers?
Those are from a local company called cSixx
Is 25mm rims wide enough for 2.8,3
I haven't tried blowing plus tires up on 25mm but I would say that you should look at 30mm internal width for 2.8' and possibly 35mm for for 3'. You might not get the ideal tire profile from blowing them up on 25mm rims.
Hi will a 32 mm internal width rim work with a 2.35 tyre? Cheers
It'll work but may blow up real square depending on the manufacturer.

Rondo Cat cheers, I’ve got a new bike tho now 😂but I did do it and it worked all that time ago haha
Good one ☝️
Thanks so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Good Stuff!
Thanks Torrance, I'm glad you like it
kind of size in rims plz
up to a point rim width has next to no effect on tyre hight or width.
I'm keen to see those conti tires, thanks for the info buddy.
The German site in question being www.reifenbreiten-datenbank.de/ 😉
It entirely depends on users adding the tire dimensions though, so some tires are still lacking.
2.5 on both tyres snakeskin
And now I want to try wide rims on my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp.
Those stumpies deserve great wheels. It's a great bike. Try some wider rims, I'm sure you will fall in love.
And plus size tires are expensive
hahaha yeah, for sure
Can you run 2.5 on 35mm?
Yes, That is what I run
@@antiherobc thanks.
30 is the new 25
hahaha yeah, most definitely.
South Africa am I right
Yeah, I'm from Cape Town
Me with 17mm rim width 😮
Smart 's !
🤘🍻
Yeah, I am all for narrow rims, because I can't afford wider wheels😂😂😂
haha yeah, everything MTB is waaaaaay overpriced. It's disappointing.
why.. why are you screaming?
IDIOT
NO
Damn speaking of overacting :(
Bike porn? Lmao 😂
haha Thanks for watching
Hope he bought some rubbers
Duuh
can a 2.25 tire fit good in a narrow rim?
yeah it will
I've run a 2.25 wide tire on a 17mm rim.
Cheers
