- Anne Murray - Snowbird [LIVE, 1996]
Snowbird was the first American Gold record ever awarded to a Canadian solo female artist. Murray would recall: "Gene told me he wrote it in twenty minutes while walking on a beach on Prince Edward Island.
Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting
For its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings the song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
That will bloom again in spring
When I was young
My heart was young then, too
Anything that it would tell me
That's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life's
The thing that I can't win
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you
The breeze along the river seems to say
That he'll only break my heart again
Should I decide to stay
So, little snowbird
Take me with you when you go
To that land of gentle breezes
Where the peaceful waters flow
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you
Yeah, if I could you know that I would

I am 70 years old and I remember this song like it was yesterday. It is interesting the tears come easily at my age. Love the song. Be Blessed
I’m 59 and grew up in Montana with all radio stations tuned to country music radio. This song is simply beautiful and I too have tears. The musical talent in the 70s was pure gold. ♥️🎶🕊️
I know exactly what you mean in saying 'the tears come easily'. Anne Murray always does that to me ...
I remember when it came out. Anne had the perfect voice for it. I am almost 72 but it seemed just like it was yesterday. Thanks so much Anne, My Mother loved your singing.
I was a little kid At the time (born in 1969). I subsequently was exposed to this song which was in the mid-late 70s an instant classic. Anne Murray is arguably a top 10 Canadian of all time!!
I loved Anne Murray! She had the voice of an angel!
I love her...her voice is beautiful I noticed you said she "had" the voice of an angel....she still does and alive and well retired and living in Canada where she's from.
I was 12 when I first heard this song. I'm 64 now still listening to this song as it transports me to an earlier time and gives me a moment of peace.
Me too, had to get out the Kleenex for this one.
We're the same age - and I have the exact reaction to this song. Astonishing how much the world have changed since then - not so much for the better.
@@Daindrais Same here.
@@blue3381 Anne Murray has the most comforting voice. And Gene MacLellan's song sure found a forever home when she recorded Snow Bird.
@@Daindrais Indeed
I am an old girl these days, retired, nearing 70 yrs old now. I was wandering through my house a little while ago when this song just popped into my head. Knew this song by heart, yet I hadn't heard it in at least 35 years now. It was so nice to hear Anne Murray's beautiful voice fill my ears again with the song only she could sing. It was an amazing time growing up with the music that changed generations of up and coming musicians. Thank you Anne, thank you for your beautiful voice and for sharing it with the world.
Great
yeah absolutely I’ve been married for 32years I was 24 and she was 20. She got cancer in 2020 I was totally lost without her. She took a major hit the treatment was horrible for her. I could do nothing to change any thing so I felt helpless..I miss her everyday. Mothers are the glue that holds everyone together.
seeing this makes me miss her even more I come to this page all the time just to have that nostalgia

I think first time I heard it was in Vietnam.
My mother who passed in 2019 loved Anne Murray.
It's one of those songs I can't listen to without crying. And I have absolutely no idea why. Her voice is just so natural and perfect.
She's so talented.
Anne Murray you have a voice that hits my heart ❤️ "Angelic"
One of the most beautiful voices in music history.
Add Karen carpenter to the list

Can't stand her.
Amen!
No doubt!
What a wonderful voice, thank you Ann Murray.
Even after 50 years? Absolutely crystal clear, Dead on the Note, absolutely flawless vocal Talent!
Hadn't heard her sing Snowbird in such a long time. She is so cheerful when she sings it. The song was probably a hit just because of her voice.
But think farther about the lyrics!! The lyrics remind me of myself being MUCH less than an ideal husband to my wonderful wife for whom I am her forever love.
This is just the most beautiful song ever sung only by her!
I’m an old man now. When I was a young man serving with the US Army in Korea, that’s the first time I ever heard this song. To hear this gifted woman sing it struck me to this day. Now as I look at the sunset of my life and feed the little birds in my backyard, I remember the snowbird from her song. God bless her.
😂😅
Talking like this reflects the voice of the heart
I felt your comment♥️ im much younger than you, but i remember this song from early childhood and it brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for your comment🌹
So beautiful...one of my favorite singers. God blessed her with such great talent
I fell in love with Anne Murray in 1978 as a young US Air Force Airman stationed on a Nuclear Test Range in the South Pacific. I've not forgotten those days or Anne Murray throughout these many years !!!
that voice comes out and grabs you ,but it isn't just the voice there's something magical that comes through that connects with you and gives you a transfusion of whatever it is .
P
Elvis also liked Anne and covered this song
This was one my mother's favorites. Great song. Great entertainer.
Literally brought tears to my eyes, outstanding!
When she sings it looks so effortless! What a treasure.
Of all her songs this has always been my favorite.
This is why I love Canadian music. No big show, people listening, people smiling and laughing, a simple gang ready to sing with a jewel. And then a big diamond comes out that would last forever. Anne Murray is priceless. This song is priceless. Boy I love her and this amazing song.
That's the first time I'd ever seen her sing this live. It's even better!! Thank you, Anne, for sharing your talents with your neighbors to the south.
Anne Murray is another fine example of why the 1970s were the greatest in the history of American popular music. I was 15 when I first heard Snowbird on the radio and fell in love with Anne Murray.
I loved this song and Anne Murray. Beautiful voice and wonderful music.
Yes, but her music is considered "middle of the road" and her songs considered "drek" because it is mild and mellow and very soft pop.
@@obscurelyvague :
Anne Murray's music, is almost similar to Folk music, and Country music.
Pure, clean, simple. 👍
Today's music cannot compare!
@@kimwood9119 It is the kind of music that lasts for millennia!!!
WOW just WOW. Anne Murray is one of the great vocalists of our time. What a pure lovely human being.
Anne Murray is a pure, genuine talent, snow bird is my favorite song of hers, came on the car radio once when my wife and 3 kids and I had left grandpa and grandma’s at Christmas time for the 4 hour drive home, they all had fallen asleep, I listened and reflected on the great holiday we just had with lots of family, that was 30 yrs ago, still hangs with me to this day, love that song.
In 1969, when I first heard it, I fell in love with Ann Murray and the song “Snowbird”. I loved her looks, voice and any song she sung. At the time, I was a DJ at a very small radio station in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. I had the pleasure of seeing her in person At Harvey’s Lake in Pennsylvania sometime in the 90’s and I absolutely loved it. I’m 85 now and I still love my wife. In April, we will be married 60 years…..I love Ann…her looks, her voice, her songs❤️
That's beautiful my friend ❤ congratulations to you and your wife ❤❤ btw, I've always loved Anne's voice ❤️. Pure poetry

60years? Wow!! I am so happy for you and your wife. God bless.
Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot. Two of the greatest gifts Canada has bestowed upon the world of music.
I, too, have never heard her sing “Snowbird” live. What a wonderful voice that just penetrates right to your heart!
Glen Campbell use to have Anne on his variety show quite often. It was always a treat when she sang on his show while he played the heck out that wonderful guitar of his. I agree that she and Gordon are two of the best from Canada or any place for that matter.

I've heard her sing it twice live. Both concerts in Austin TX. Once in the 1980s and then early 1990s as I recall.
Good times.
I have been listening to Anne Murray since I was a teenager. I love her voice i could listen all day. I'm listening from Farmersville Tx USA
Such a beautiful song from a beautiful woman. She is treasure and class act all the way.
She is a national treasure.
Anne Murray's Snowbird is a song I remember often hearing on the little black transistor radio on the kitchen table in the morning as we ate breakfast in our grumpy mood before going off to high school. It’s a very simple song, and yet very likeable. A big part of it is Anne's unique, rich voice.
Have you tried Elvis's version?
you don't make me to cry
I was in 6th grade and my grandmother loved this song.
John Lennon said ..Ann Murray had the greatest voice in music..but then again who the hell is John Lennon ?
What a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice truly truly one of the greatest female singers of all time..
I have loved Anne's voice since I was a kid in the 60's, this is as beautiful a it's gets..
What a voice... my mother sang it as part of her repertoire as a cabaret artist in Australia
A huge hit in Oz.
Love this Beautiful song and Love Anne Murray's beautiful voice Could listen to her forever!
I've always loved Anne Murray from the first time i heard her back in 1970.. She's a classy singer. I wish i could sing along with her.
Anne has only gotten more beautiful as life goes on. Anne you have brought so much joy to so many lives. Now I’m gonna be honest here and that is I won’t meet you in this lifetime but there is a deeper lasting place and I pray to now you then. See, I have terminal blood cancer and your music keeps me positive and I enjoy everything you do. I know God is in charge and he put you in this world to bring happiness to everyone. Thank you Anne Murray!
As an American I must thank Canada for sending Anne Murray to us. She's great with a voice that resonates to my heart.
Elvis’s favourite female singer. He even recorded Snowbird
@@cmccullough12C wasn't aware of that, thanks
Love Anne Murray, brings back many memories, Sad & Happy
I had a crush on Anne when I was a young man back in the 70s. Even though I was into the rock thing back then, I dont think I ever missed an Anne Murray TV special. Especially the Christmas shows. Those shows bring back such fond memories, laying by the Christmas tree with a big fire in the fireplace and my family by my side. :-) What a talent.
Absolutely amazing, such a beautiful song.

I was lucky in 1993 as a 14 year old I came upon a best hits tape and fell in love with the music of another generation. I’m now 44 and I have now lived the lyrics I quite hadn’t understood as a child.
Another generation? Technically you're GenX, Anne Murray was very much active and performing for 'our' generation. The performance in this vid was '96.
I have always loved this song. Beautiful voice, Ann Murray.

i love that she sounds better the older she gets. its a scientific miracle! it takes alot of time and care to maintain a a good singing voice for a long time.
When they sound as good live as they do with all of today’s technology added in, that’s real talent. A gift from God above. Many today sound so different in concert than they do on record. I never tire of listening to this rare gem. ♥️😊✝️

So so beautiful! Love your voice and your incredible songs, Anne Murray 💖💕
Nobody does it better than Anne. This song is her signature. I always admired her simplicity even in the midst of some of the greats, she held her own and was greatly respected.
Crystal Gayle also did a great rendition, as well as Elvis.
That woman is truly amazing; anything she sings always makes me cry.
I couldn't have said it more simply and honestly myself.

I sang in a band back in the 70s and early 80s and I did a lot of Anne Murray. She is one of my favorite singers.

What a beautiful song which I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it on the radio.
I sadly did not appreciate Anne Murray’s music in my youth. But I listen to it now and I can really appreciate the great Canadian singer that she truly is 😃🇨🇦
lovely song thank you Anne Murray
This was my husband favorite song and singer, sure makes him miss him to hear it again.
I heard it for the first time in Nam in 70 or 69 , I always have certain memories that flash in my mind , Christal clear & vivid!
I can see through that, beside her singing, she can nicely defending and steals and leaves deeper impressions in hearts.
😃🌷
One of my most favourite songs ever. Beautiful song beautiful woman .
Beautiful Beautiful, love this song, this is real music
There's something about the way the lyrics flow along with Anne's rich voice that makes it special. It sounds just as good here with just a couple acoustic guitars as on the original string laden orchestral arrangement.
Thank Q Anne Murray ☆
One of my Mother's most favorites amongst all the songs she loves thatyou sing .. music and your albums were such a big part of my childhood heart beats. ❤🎼🤗
…just to see her perform this is an experience…no matter where Anne Murray is.
I love the Canadian songbird: Anne Murray!!
Hi Kathy hope you’re okay?
I was 10 when this song was released and my mother played the 45 incessantly. I listened to it for the first time in decades recently and had forgotten how beautiful it was. This version has a nice cadence to it and the harmonies at the very end of the song well me up every time.
She has a lovely voice and this is a wonderful song. She's not afraid to sing ln the low range.
i can t ever get tired of her voice it flows like a nice rippling beach of clear water and i see a forest of beautiful flowers and trees and grass that is lush and full and a sky that is blue and a nice breeze and she is always going to be the best at what she does and she is indeed a treasure thank you for sharing this great video
OMG just so wonderful to see these two Canadian icons on stage together. I love them both. Two amazing ladies.
Her voice has lovely melody, it really shines with Snowbird!
Anne Murray is one of my favorite female singers. We attended a live Mack Davis TV show taping in the mid 70's and when we arrived they announced the guest was Anne Murray. She sang this song and couple others. It was wonderful.
Will never forget. Bought every one of her albums, well not albums but those round CD's. Her bio is absolutely super. Very down to earth on that show talking about her songs, etc.
Hi Karen hope you’re okay?
Beautiful song, reminds me of my childhood hearing this on the radio and getting excited as I liked the lyrics. Lovely voice. ❤️
Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter are among the greatest female vocalists of all time.
I was comparing these two amazing contraltos in my mind as I read your comment...
