  • In this episode of Zone 3 Podcast Reggie and Robert discuss training new MRI technologists. Rob Cloutier, a well-known MRI Educator, discusses his approach to training technologists, focusing on understanding the 'why' behind MRI instead of just memorizing protocols. He talks about the importance of teaching MRI concepts in simple, easy-to-understand ways using analogies and stories. The key takeaways are to focus on the fundamentals like coverage, angles, phase direction, and assessing for motion and wrap. Rob emphasizes empowering technologists to think critically instead of being 'button pushers' who blindly follow protocols. He shares real examples of problem-solving on cases and talks about the importance of communication, efficiency, and attention to detail in producing quality diagnostic images.
    Highlights
    00:00:02 Introduction
Rob is a guest on Reggie and Robert's podcast to discuss training MRI technologists. He takes a different approach focused on understanding concepts instead of memorizing protocols. Some graduates from his program were recently hired where Reggie and Robert work.
    00:06:17 Teaching the Fundamentals
Rob teaches the fundamentals of coverage, angles, phase direction, and assessing for motion and wrap. He wants students to understand the reasons behind techniques instead of blindly following protocols. His goal is to empower technologists to think critically and not just be 'button pushers'.
    00:59:51 Communicating Expectations
Rob emphasizes the importance of communication in setting expectations for patients about scan duration, table position, etc. This helps reduce patient anxiety. Clear communication also builds trust between technologists and radiologists regarding protocol modifications.
    00:53:37 Efficiency and Quality
Going faster does not mean sacrificing quality - efficient exams allow more time for patient communication and comfort. Rob aims for 'pretty pictures in the shortest time' - quality images for rads in efficient exams for patients.
    01:02:08 Problem Solving
Rob shares real case examples like modifying protocols for large patients, metal implants, and motion artifacts. He demonstrates critical thinking to balance rad and patient needs.
    01:13:08 Advice for Technologists
Rob advises new techs to be honest about skills gaps and open to learning by reading reports, practicing scans, and understanding the reasons behind techniques. The goal is to gain knowledge and confidence.

    Excellent conversation.
I think while discussing the factors determining image quality, contrast resolution would be another main contributer to discuss alongwith spatial resolution, fat elimination and phase smearing.

Thank you this is just an excellent pod cast, really made me think of who I am as a technologist. Really want to be that expert 😊 Also made me think about who I work for and what environment I have learned in. 🤔

I watched an MRA of the chest and the magnet didn't have any protocols saved. I m glad I was watching because it was so far over my head.

you can go to MRI Master and find protocols for this. and any scan, actually.

@anniesshenanigans3815 I looked and it wasn't there. That was the first spot I checked. Necks there but not chest. Unless this scan goes by another name.

I agree with Robert about the PA phase. If you have that option. I can see it making a difference. Same reason we can scan sternums PA; reduce motion.

I really enjoy this podcast and love what you are doing but just a pointer please try to refrain from going too off topic. It really takes away from the knowledge your guests are trying to share with us, overall love the podcast but it could use some cleaning up.

" they are hiring people straight out of school " so it was WRONG for them to do that? can you elaborate on that? because where the hell is a person straight out of school learn the real deal IF every place will tell you they need a tech with experience???
