Even without seeing the VHS tape prior to the birthday puzzle, you can still figure it out through trial and error, which is how I did it. I had no idea there was even a VHS tape in the first place which was a big surprise to me watching this play through.

I fully believe that Lucas was just a psycho murderer before Evie and that was why he was so angry about the possibility of losing her "gift". Seems like immortality would be a big help in the psycho killer line of work. I believe they even mention in a memo on the boat later on that Lucas was never affected by her mind control, only the fungus's combat enhancements.
