- Getting your grass dark green in less than 24 hours is not as hard as you may think. I have a three ingredient cocktail that I use when trying to darken up my grass. Those three ingredients are nitrogen, iron, and plant growth regulator. All three have properties of making your grass darker.
In this video I talk about the properties, pros and cons, and how to apply foliar iron. I also give a step by step on how much I use with my “dark green cocktail”.

Glad I found this channel. Very high quality filming/editing and info! keep it up man!
Thanks Kyle, sorry I'm replying so late. Just catching up on all of the comments now! I appreciate you subscribing and taking the time to watch!
You should add the iron first prior to the urea, reason being is that when the urea is added to the water the reaction lowers the water temperature, and like you said, higher temp water will allow the iron to disolve better. I just added 3.5 lbs of 46% urea to 1 gallon of water. Water temperature went from 92 degrees to 50 degrees. If you ever played sports as a kid and was injured, the instant cold packs that are used are made of urea and water.
Great video! Thanks 😃
Ha. Good info. Never knew that lol.
Awesome video, and keep em’ commin!
Even your neighbors lawn looks greener ! Fantastic
You know your stuff brother!! Live in Stuart Florida my whole life.
Been doing this trade for a living going on 18 years now
And with that being said you teach me new things every video I watch of yours!!
Props on your knowledge and thanks for sharing it with us

Skol brother! Thanks for watching. Who do you work for? I definitely need some irrigation work done. I'd love to pick your brain about a few things.

I like how you showed results using the test area

I need the big box store version of a lawn care video series. Using the products most people have access to. :)
Super Tech brand Diesel Exhaust Fluid from Walmart is $10 for 2.5 gallons. That stuff is just water and urea with an analysis of 15-0-0. I have yet to find liquid chelated iron from a big box store but you can get granulated ironite.
I wet down the driveway and sidewalk edges a couple of feet from the grass edges right before I start spaying the liquids...helps if you go over the edge during application. That way it hoses off easier and leaves less of a mess.
Never heard of this before, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip James.
Lawn looks awesome! Good stuff
Thanks bro! I'm a huge fan of your channel. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Just found you. As a fellow creator I appreciate the educational content that’s well filmed. Thanks man. Subbed.
Idea for a video: What if you tested in a small area and did almost everything "wrong" when spring seeding?
- Plant now instead of earlier in the spring
- Don't pre-germinate
- Use KBG instead of rye of fescue
- Don't work seed into the soil or apply a top dressing
- Don't use any preemergents or starter fertilizer
Basically just lay the seed down and keep up with watering and that's it. Maybe even compare to another path where everything was done right. Then compare in early summer to see how they are both doing.
I may do a different version of what you're saying here. I appreciate the suggestion. Please leave more suggestions for videos if you have them. I'm always open to ideas!! Thanks man!
Just subscribed. I'm loving your content and production style.
Thanks man! You have good timing, just released another video for ya an hour ago. Haha. I appreciate the kind words!
I remember 18 years ago as a rookie.. I sprayed iron "too heavy" on a lawn.. needless to say it was "super black" ! aghhh

I appreciate that man! Teach me how to get those laser straight stripes you seem to always get. Not kidding. Thanks for tuning in. I appreciate the support!
If you use the granule iron with a spreader, the iron will last longer. I spread it four times a year and to keep that grass greener longer, you have to cut it higher. The lower you cut, less green color and won't last as long, I'm in Southwest Florida.
Beautiful lawn, and I’m a Vikings fan as well and I live in Maryland. Skol Vikings and great video.
Can Ironite be applied now in Pennsylvania to help stay green since the growth has slowed down alot due to the heat.
How often do you apply this cocktail? Or how often can I apply granular iron to my lawn with out turning it black?
I have been using a combo of DEF, liquid Chelated Iron, Jackpot Micronutrients and PGR applied every two weeks.
My grass has been happy.
I would be curious on the ratio’s per gallon of water. I just bought a Petratools HD14000 sprayer & I wanted to use DEF as well.
@@2glhudson low end is 10-11 oz of DEF per gallon of water. 1 gallon of mixture per 1000 sq ft. The jackpot micro nutrients is 1 oz per gallon. The PGR I use is .3 oz per gallon.
@@Funknwanker Thank you. Now to figure out the sprayer once it arrives. It has a variable psi adjustment. I’ll probably start off with psi adjuster turned down a 1/4 the way or even half way to make sure I don’t over add it the mixture.
Thank you. very helpful information.
Thanks for watching!
He’s very easy to understand, He’ great.
That's fxxk great for my lawn, My lawn is almost stupid and Rubbish garbage before, But now i think i can control everything for my lawn, Thanks a lot
I have the same chapin motorized sprayer, love it. Sounds like you calculated 1000 Sq ft per gallon on yours. I've done many tests with mine and mine covers 500 Sq ft per gallon. Did you put a different spray head on yours?
I really enjoy your videos and I think your right on with your content and your methodology. I did have an idea that might be helpful in regard to showing the effects of your cocktail. You might want to try placing a piece of cardboard about 12” x 12”’or any other shape for that matter, on the lawn to see a clear 360 degree comparison of the look you get with or without the treatment. Once again, great job and keep them coming. :)
If you watch my "how to get the darkest lawn period" video. I do exactly that. Thanks for watching!
Great video. 💕 👍 Thanks
Cool bro. Thanks for sharing
Appreciate you watching!
The recommended/linked iron product has been out of stock for months. Any other suggestions on a comparable product? Thanks for the video!
How long did you let it dry before allowing kids and dogs on it? Great results I’m sold ordering today 👍
Looking good! What cultivar(s) of KBG do you have?
Thanks man! I have no idea, I'm guessing it was the original sod that was laid down after the house was built. I have a test plot in my backyard with Mazama, Bluebank, Everest, and a mix. I'll be doing a video on what those all look like and how they're doing soon.
I bought the FEature product you have in the description link. I will be using the ORTHO 0.25-Gallon Plastic Handheld Sprayer on my hose end.. how much do I dilute the mix? Do I dilute the same as a backpack sprayer or do I need a different mix because it’s a hose sprayer? Need help, thanks.
Hey Andrew, I have only used iron products with a foliar application (spraying it in a mist to stick to the leaf blade). I have never watered it in like it sounds like you are doing. I know it is possible to go this route, but the results will take longer as the roots need to uptake the iron. I may not be the best resource for this type of application, sorry man. Wish I could help you out a little more.
Thanks for the video! Can I do this now in Summer?
Great video
Awesome! AS definitely gives darker green than Urea, but have to be very light on rates. 0.05 to 0,1. And to me a no no for summer apps.
I think I want to try AS at some point this year. Still haven't tried it out
Pest & Lawn Ginja on RUclips has also said in one of his Productions that the post-mortem of the examined sample if lawns afflicted with fungal infections, too much Urea was used in each case.
I'm just notifying....
Most everything I have purchased in the past before finding this out has Urea in it to keep the cost down.
So 3 questions, is it better to spray the cocktail after Mowing?! how often you have to spray it !? And last , is it better to water it right after or wait 24 hrs to let it soak ?! Thanks , great info !👍🏼
Yes, after mowing would be best. You can spray this cocktail once every 4 weeks if using pgr. If not, every 2 will be fine. After 4 hours of sitting on the leaf blade you can wash it off. Thanks for watching!
Great Job
Thanks good video!
I hate those little yellow buds that fall from trees. I'm seriously considering cutting down my tree because of those things. Great looking lawn!
Great job, 👍
Beautiful .
Nice information and vid! New sub here
Thanks for subbing! I really appreciate it! If you have any questions or ideas for videos let me know!
Hello There! I have always used straight iron and just a general fertilizer once a week with plenty of water and have had good luck but i want to do better :-). I only have around 800 sq ft or so…… based off of 1000 sq ft what would I use for my sprayer as the mixture? I live in Oregon. Thanks for any help.
Lonye
What did you do get those stripes, looks awesome. 👏🏾
You are crazy maniac... I love it.
I tried granular on its own and it unfortunately did nothing. But I also used it on its own in Aug with the other treatments done earlier in the season, so perhaps it needs to be used in conjunction with other treatment
We live in Tennessee and are going through a dry spell where fescue is going dormant. Is there a time when you can and cannot apply the solution? Thank you!
If your grass is going dormant you don't want to apply anything. You only want to apply this cocktail when the grass is healthy and actively growing. Good luck with this drought. Everyone is going through it, it seems like!
I got you beat man! My lawn is super dark green in only about an hour! It's amazing what a 5 gallon bucket of paint and a roller can achieve! lol
😂 no judgement over here...gotta do what you gotta do! Lol.
LMAO
Uh
11 months later
That’s hilarious😂😂
What if there is a heavy rain expected, should you wait or should it be watered in?
After watching this video, I bought some chelated iron, from Southern AG. I’m not sure but I have applied it twice and see very if any results. I even tried doubling the amount and still no results. Any advice? Did you water it in ? If so how long did you wait to water it
Fantastic!!! How do you get your lawn so even??? 🤔
What are your thoughts on just buying a chelated iron liquid product rather than a powder? That would seem to help with the sediment/dissolving issue.
It's gonna cost a lot more money being premixed. If you can find a cost effective product it wouldn't be a bad way to go
@@LAWNLIFE thelawnwhisperer.net/products/midnight-12-0-0-liquid-fertilizer-with-5-chelated-iron-1-gallon Here is a decently priced option. The cost per lb of iron is just a little higher than FEature.
I've used everything known to man,Scott's Max,Ironite, I guess I haven't tried your way,but the darkest my grass ever got was when I used Scott's Natural lawn food. Was totally not what I was after, just got a deal at 4.50 a bag and so I bought all they had.I put it down and two weeks later it was the darkest of green I'd ever seen it.Havent used it since the last bag was gone, for some reason it's hard to find around here and my goal at the moment isn't the color.Like I said it was just dumb luck ,but it was so dark I figured it was worth mentioning.
Milogranite or Sunniland slow release fertilizer!!! Thank me later
@@Desminique09 used milogranite before,,,didnt see much improvement
I liked the video just off the intro. Nice lawn and mower!
Lawn Life, how often can you apply iron to your lawn?
What about the plant growth regulator, will it stunt trees? Thx for the video!
Don't think there's even close to enough being applied to stunt tree growth
Grea vide buddy!!!! If use only urea can get a dark green?????
About to use this cocktail tomorrow. The only thing that has me worried is the fact I thought urea had to be watered in. Where as iron & PGR do not. Also how much urea did you dissolve per 1k sqft?
please reply
Thx for the video. I spread urea granules on my lawn and it turned totally yellow. Do you know a fix for that. Should I shampoo it with baby shampoo to get rid of the urea! It’s cold and raining.
Do you have any good links for PPE when spraying? Seems like a different world than just spreading granular!

Nice quality video... You sprayed and don’t need to water afterwards? I want to avoid having to water down afterwards...
Thanks Thomas! But no, you don't want to water in or get rained on for at least 4 hours. If you're not going to water in at all, I would use around 0.1 to 0.15 lbs of N to remove the risk of tip burn on your grass. Let me know if you want me to explain this a little more
@LAWN LIFE Thanks... So .1lb to .15lb N is the same as .1 to .15 lb Urea?
@@thomashanan1996 0.27 lbs of urea per 1000 would be perfect for what you're looking for. That gives you 0.125 lbs of Nitrogen per 1000
Does the feature really not stain concrete at all? I know it says it on the bag, but I’m wondering if you have oversprayed at all? I picked some up last year and have yet to try it. I’m just curious how careful I should be on my sidewalk edges. Thanks!
I've hit my concrete before and it definitely has not stained. But I'm not out there over spraying on it, on purpose. I still try to be careful around it.
Buy an $8.00 tarp from Harbor Freight and protector sidewalk with that.
Michael Dunagan I’ve never had issues, but I am always extra careful. The label for this product just has bold lettering stating that it “will not stain concrete” so I was curious if he had found that to be true.
New subbie, what backpack sprayer are you using?
Ok now this is FUNNT True Green was the add on this vid and I gave them a try for 2 years now my yard is a disaster back to DIY

I usually put all the product links I use in the description for future reference. Thanks for checking it out man! Also, if your water pH is high, I would suggest putting in some citric acid in your mix or you wont get very good results with feature. If you check out my "Cheapest Fertilizer" video, I explain how to do all of that.

What is the nitrogen product you used in this? I see the iron and PGR in the description, but not the nitrogen. Looks great!
Urea is sold at most feed stores. 46-0-0
As Monty Python was in search of the Holy Grail I'm in search of getting a dark green lawn: FOR YEARS!
And I try to keep it at 3-inches in an attempt to fend off pests and weeds and funguses.
You are the first introduce me to PGR so I'll have to look into it.
======================
In your situation with growing the grass so short, would you be better off treating your grass like a golf course or a soil that's very Sandy where you reduce the quantity supplied at a given time but you make more applications in the same calendar span of days.
Thanks for all of your videos, I have watched a bunch. You have given me the courage to try doing my own lawn (32k sq/ft) and I jumped in by getting a tow behind sprayer.
I just ordered Urea from Amazon and it was suppose to be 46-0-0 but what arrived was a commercial grade 50lb bag that says Urea ..... 98.7% and it doesn't have any instructions on the bag, just a warning label. I also ordered PGR and FEature Iron following your suggestion.
I think I heard that if I put .2lbs or less of N down, that I don't need to water it in. Is this correct? Also, because this is 98.7% Urea, does that change anything as long as I am using the formula (.14 lbs / .987 = .1418 of a lb per 1K sq ft)? Then I will have the 6% of N in the FEature which should bring me to .2 lbs per 1k? Did I get that right? Thank you for all your help!
Email me at lawnlifewithjesse@gmail.com and let's figure everything out before you spray. I want to make sure you get this right
@@LAWNLIFE Thank you
great video........ I just subbed
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks man!
Hi Ryan. How often can i treat my lawn with iron please?thanks and greetings from Slovakia ( Central Europe)
Thanks for the video. Will be doing this. A few questions…..how often should I be doing this? What is that lawnmower you’re using? Last, do you cut the grass that short when it’s really hot? If you do why doesn’t it burn up? If watering is your answer, how mush water?
Can you add iron right after applying turf builders?
Yes, you shouldn't have any issues. I apply fertilizer at the same time as the iron.
What kind I liquid iron do you recommend
Can you apply in a hot season?
Yeah it’s such a balance. Long grass can hold its color although it’s terrible to walk on. Better to sacrifice a little color with short cut grass.
Good stuff! Just sub’d..
Thanks man! I appreciate it! Got some more content coming soon.
Hey I did everything to the T with your directions for the getting your lawn dark green in 24 hours. I even bought all the same ingredients to used and I didn't get any greener lawn.
Why?
Can I use a fertilizer now even though I did the Feature 6-0-0 3;days ago
Awesome. New to your channel. What grass do you have?
Kentucky Bluegrass. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Low Cut Lawn. ....In your experience do you think your turf builds a tolerance to iron overtime? Have you found the need to use heavier apps to match the results from previous seasons?
Thanks Eli! In my personal experience I have not noticed that it builds a tolerance. 1.5 oz per 1000 has had the same effect for me over time.
Will the iron work on scalped grass?
Love the video. I’m using T-nex for the first time this year. Any problem with high temperatures applying this application? I was not going to add water soluble or liquid nitrogen to this concoction. Just iron and PGR. It’s in the mid to upper 90s in NC this week. My lawn is extremely healthy right now, though. Water it in afterwards? Love the video. Cheers, Hunter
You're good in the high heat with t-nex. You're going to want to let that and the iron sit on the grass blades for 4 hours and then you can water it in. Thanks for watching man. You're can throw in a small amount of nitrogen if you want. 0.2 lbs of N per k or less otherwise you have to worry about burn.

Does the urea need watering in at .2#N/ 1k?
What type of lawn mower is that at the beginning during intro?
Nice video. Can yo do this in California? All the grass here is brown and we don’t have any water.
How often can you put this cocktail on your lawn ? Thanks Craig.
Hey Craig, for PGR you only want to put it down once every 4 weeks. Iron and Urea can go down bi-weekly. Let me know if you have any other questions!
How do you prevent the stipes? or how do you get them for that matter?
Late reply but using a mower with a rear roller gives you the stripes. If you don't want them use a mower with 4 wheels instead.
Should you mow before or after spraying? I realize you mowed after, but ideally which is better for the lawn?
You need to mow after to allow the plant to take in everything you've sprayed on it.
@@LAWNLIFE thanks for the reply. How long will the deep color last? Will it only last for a couple weeks, or longer? Is this something you do multiple times a year? In the Midwest when is the best time to do it?
