Every time Subaru returns by death the scent of the witch / miasma gets stronger so that’s why garf didn’t say anything at first but now in the prison he said not many people have this amount of miasma on him and that’s what made him think Subaru is a witch cultist very similar to Rem in the mansion loop. The first time he died by the curse the 2nd time she finished him off and the 3rd time she actively went to hunt him down because the scent kept getting stronger each loop making her more paranoid
And it seems like the smell decreases over time (as long as he doesn't die) and that's why when he arrived at the sanctuary it his smell wasn't so bad. You could say it restarted back to zero...or as close to zero as can be for someone "loved" by the witch as much as Subaru seems to be.
I think the strong witch’s smell on Subaru, combined with him saying to Ryuzu and Garfiel that he wants to do the trials instead of Emilia, also make him look very very suspicious to Garfiel in this life too. Like Garfiel must be thinking: “why would someone smelling so strongly of the witch wants to go into the witch’s graveyard”
Just to clarify why Subaru acted so weird when Otto called him his friend is because Subaru has been getting double-crossed so much recently that he feels like everyone is against him. (Roswal and Betty for example)
If I'm not mistaken, the light novel even mentions that Subaru did forget human kindness in these 3 days, he was confused because he thought Otto just wanted a talk with Roswaal, the shock and the whole situation somehow has made he acts in that way, lol Very interesting and fair way to write this moment, but kinda confusing in the anime
@@flur9430it's less confusing if you just feel for Subaru while he's bashing his head in... I hate that the rabbits get so much appreciation but Subaru's more terrifying moments of not knowing if he'll be freed and wishing for death in solitude aren't treated as part of the horror. This scene even parallels Otto later on, it's important to include but people never do! The actual horror which affects them in re zero is never that flashy and gets lost on people.

Just want to tell you guys that Otto pushing Subaru out of the cart had a very specific reason. Remember in the whale fight, when the whale screamed and people were losing their minds? Some were scratching their faces and slamming their heads on the ground. The whales call can drive you crazy. And Otto can understand the language of any creature. So he heard it talking, which effected his mind even more than normal when he heard it’s call. So Otto was literally driven nuts in that scene. And of course, this was erased by RBD, so it didn’t happen in the main timeline

Otto didn't know Subaru during the whale incident. He was just hired to transport them. Also, while Otto was trying to save them, Subaru started screaming about Rem who didn't exist and then punched Otto for leaving her. I feel like I can understand why he pushed the crazy man off.
Gariel keeps acting differently every loop but he just straight out said to subaru what the reason was... the witch's scent... Garfiel can smell it too... just like Rem... therefore everytime subaru comes back the scent is stronger... eliciting a different reaction from Garfiel towards subaru each time...
I also want to add that Dani had a very good prediction of Beatrice trying to convince herself. Her actions had contradicting elements for that reason. You will see as you watch
