The scent gets stronger every restart which is why Garfield gets angrier every time and it become a problem
Have they confirmed that it gets stronger every time he restarts so that it accumulates? My understanding was that it got stronger briefly just after restarting and then slowly faded a bit. Just like when he tries to say return by death to taunt mabeasts?

The smell is stronger the closer Subaru is to a restart point. Because the restart happens in the Sanctuary, when Subaru leaves, the scent is still very strong. That is why Garfield didn't care as much in the first encounter, since it had been a longer time since the last restart. Rem says as much in episode 15 of the first season.

Do remember that every time subaru dies the witch’s scent gets stronger. This has been shown a few times with rem mentioning his scent in the first season
there's a whole write a 5 page report detailing how subaru felt every second of those rabbits eating every inch of his insides until they nommed on his brain at the end. Author is actually the biggest S on the planet to Subaru specifically lmao.
That last scene gave voice actor of the year award to subaru's voice actor.
Subaru’s VA puts on an incredible performance this episode. Easily one of the best moments of the anime
You have to remember that in this reality there is no Rem so in the eyes of the villagers Subaru went alone into the forest and returned their children. And he has no powers, he's a simple man, so for them he does look like a total hero. Of course they would try to help him any way they can.
Don't worry all will come together. We're just simply being introduced all the pieces to the puzzle first.
Subaru needs to gather allies and defeat multiple antagonists at the same time. The assasins at the mansion, these rabbits and getting Garfiel on our side... all while exploring the lore of the world and the different sides of these characters depending on the cause and effect of what Subaru does differently. We still have Rem to take care of, with the archbishops of Greed and Gluttony
To me this has to be one of the best moments of the series.
Subaru finally being able to say that after so long feels so good.
He's just a normal dude in this world of madness.

Man this was the year Subaru’s VA won VA of the year at the awards and well deserved. This was the scene they used for the voting and man what emotion he gave when he cried in front of Echidna
Subaru already left early and Elsa was already there. The only difference was that Elsa didn't attack until he showed up because that was in her orders.
After Garf transforms he essentially not himself anymore. He's just a beast. I'm guessing it's not portrayed anywhere or said explicitly (Or I just don't remember it happening). He's just like "Okay I'll transform and all the problems will be solved by making a bloody mush out of all trouble makers". Not the brightest strategy (kinda cowardly even), but no one in the Shrine have capability to stop Garf in the beast mode as we saw in this episode.
Garf very much CAN control himself in that form. It’s shown in a later episode when he goes to fight Satella.
I think it's more that he can lose control, and he practically chooses to lose control and fall back on it when he's angry enough
@@satorumikami7721 isn't he just slaughtered against Sattela though? Hard to say if he was controlling himself if he died in a blink. I remember Garf "retreating" to beast from to avoid dealing with problems being one of the important points of his character arc, at least in light novel
The catharsis of Subaru finally being able to share even a little of what he's been through was so palpable it made me tear up with him when I first watched this.
Along with the resolutions he got when he "went back home" and the end of this episode is probably my favorite parts of this show.
You guys are doing well so far. Keep it up, stay strong! :D A lot is happening and we are constantly being bombarded with new information, but I promise if you pay attention everything ties together and makes sense eventually.
Not that it matters now, but when Subaru said he was going to resume what he was trying to do before he was interrupted and captured 3 days before, he was referring to his meeting with Roswaal--not attempting the trial. That doesn't appear to be something he wants or is able to do without getting people on board with it first. Re:Zero is known for being cyclical, but especially so here in this loop where we follow a pattern of talking to Subaru's peers, comforting and encouraging Emilia, consulting Roswaal for new information, heading back to the mansion, being set back in some way and meeting with Echidna for even more information.
With the setting constantly changing it's hard to get the bearings too. When he was teleported unconscious and awoke in a snowy sanctuary I think everyone had the same fear watching for the first time. That he somehow passed out long enough for everyone to leave and all that tragedy to become saved over and permanent.
I'm just gunna say I don't think the "tact" matters a lot here in the way you think it does for Subaru. Like, if he somehow managed to ask if he could do the trial in a different way or tried to be friendlier with Garfiel to get on his good side. Regulating his anger and brushing up his negotiating skills certainly was a "life-saver" for the second half of season one. Though, it wouldn't matter here because Subaru is subject to forces outside his control and his knowledge. He doesn't even know what he doesn't know that would otherwise help him start to move things in the direction he wants. Garfiel becomes progressively more suspicious and hostile to Subaru because the "Witch's Scent" becomes permanently more powerful and more pungent on Subaru everytime he dies and everytime he tries to tell someone about it (minus Echidna as you've seen). Rem has also noticed it has been getting stronger and Betelgeuse once stated Subaru has enough miasma equivalent to that of a Sin Archbishop.
Also, I don't think referencing things that have happened in another loop off-hand as a joke or to brush them off matter a whole lot in the way of his success either. That's kind of just what Subaru does, remember? Speak his mind out loud, in these cases I imagine relating to the experiences he shares with no one and speaking them into existence in hopes they live on in his heart and actually matter. The worst that seems to happen from that is people seem confused for second but then move on. Referencing throwing Ram as a distraction to save Rem during the mabeast assault seemed to have triggered discrepancies in Ram's memory too.
The archetype of a witch is a chaotic, unstable person who lives alone within nature in places like swamps. They often own cauldrons and "brew potions" that have magical effects. Hearing Echidna say she puts things from her body into recipes she makes people ingest makes me think of the Yandere stereotype. The creepy, loner girl who's obsession with the object of her affection causes her to do crazy things. Like Meg from Family Guy baking her hair into a pie she fed to Brian when she had a crush. Or Anna Nishikinomiya from Shimoneta "brewing" her "body fluid" 🥵into cookie batter. When I heard Echidna say she uses her body fluid, I'll admit I thought it could be "that". I don't know if the show will say specifically what it is, but actually if you pay attention to her behavior you can infer. They've given you a big hint already ;)

WTF was that demonic bunny scene? That shit was more horrific than some actual horror films. By far, one of, if not the most, brutal death in the series so far. Highly gruesome.

@@birdup2141 All of the deaths in the Novels are horrifically detailed 😂, a certain death of a hated villain in Arc 5 comes to mind. That shit was crazy.
They made it softer for the anime... rabbits can't really pierce skin so they had to enter his body through the orifices to feast... there's just a glimpse of something being inside.

The most important thing that the anime fails to demonstrate here and even contradicts a little later (they kind of mess this up and it was clear in the novel) garfiel completely loses control when he transforms. He’s too nice to kill people in his human form, so when he has to fight, or when he loses his cool, he transforms to avoid the guilt of attacking people.
This is one of the greatest story telling. But it really needs focus from the viewer and on your first time watching there is no way you catch everything. So rewatching this is recommended on your own time if you want to be on point with all the mystery stuff that isn't explained. This show has a lot of get 1 answer, but 2 more questions get added.
The bunny scene was so hardcore in the short story. They showed how they were in him in the anime but it was tough reading how Subaru felt while he was being eaten alive inside and out. It’s top 5 worst deaths for me.

I just think that with Otto during S1, Otto barely knew him and Subaru was just a client that night. Where in now they actually know each other and Subaru even saved Otto once.

It’s no exaggeration that being devoured by demonic rabbits was one of if not Subaru’s worst death so far. Poor guy.. it’s a miracle he’s not completely lost his sanity by now. He’s a stronger man than me, I would have broke ages ago if I were him, I wouldn’t even bother getting out of bed.
Fun fact: Subaru died when the big rabbit ate his brain... not even when they were eating him from the inside... it was his worst death...!!

Does the novel explain why he was teleported to the rabbits after Garf attacked and the pendant glowed? I watched this season and still don't know why that happened.
I think he was knocked out and woke up when the bunnies came?
I'm assuming it's because of the barrier and Echidna calling him. Similar to how he was teleported in ep 2
The necklace teleported him to the trial when he was tossed past the barrier, the same way at the start of the season. Since he took too long, the snow was called and the rabbits showed up while everyone was getting bodied by garfiel. Im not even sure if Subaru was teleported like that at all in the novel either time, but its been a while.

This was the last episode I watched I don’t know why maybe new anime came out and I put this on the back burner until the rest of the season came out I need to finish it

The symbol on the rabbit was the same as the symbol above the white whale's head; remember when Subaru met Echidna and she said the witch of gluttony made mabeasts to feed the world, or something along those lines? I take it as the symbol being like a branding from her.

For instance, let's say Subaru in this moment lost all rational and started attacking Echidna just vaugely off the fact that she's a witch, would Echidna not be justified in protecting herself? Even if it meant destroying Subaru's body only to have Minerva fix it again?
I don't see the point of this comment though. he wasn't "doing anything he wants", just having a cathartic emotional outburst. there's no indication anywhere at all that he wants to attack Echidna so I don't get the point. They were basically just saying its understandable that Subaru was acting like that when she was telling him to calm down, but its not like he was uncalm because of anger.

@@cottoncandyenthusiast8371 no? Echidna was trying to calm subaru down and get him to listen to her, but he was still processing his emotions. Sam is essentially verbalizing that what Subaru is feeling is understandable and he needs to process it slowly rather than just shutting up and giving all his attention to whatever Echidna wanted to say at that moment.
@@jiv3o275 And Subaru went and processed his emotions seconds later, Echidna in the first place wanted to know how Subaru feels given what she says later and while we don't what she would've said I personally feel it wasn't going to be something that denies Subaru's current feelings
