Just to clear up any possible confusion with the relationship between Subaru and Beatrice (because there are many people who have only seen the anime who misinterpret this), there is nothing romantic about it, not in the slightest. It is similar to Puck and Emilia, i.e. basically a family relationship. I know it can be confusing because the season ends just as they form their contract, but even in the novel it is explicitly mentioned that there are no romantic feelings involved. No one who is active in fandom interprets it any other way. It's the purest relationship in the entire series.

The novels didn't have to bother hiding this fact because obviously it's non-visual medium but they did in the anime. The way it's described is like someone who could pass off as a close relative of Dream Echidna but who was noticeably different. Roswaal and Beatrice had no reaction to her face because that's the one they always knew. Also about what happened to Echidna, we get that answer in the novel but the anime cut it out. I assume for the same reason they cut out Rem getting devoured in season 1 so the arc could end on a happy note. I don't know if the anime is going to move it to next season or just skip it entirely. But if you want possible SPOILERS Echidna was able to inhabit Shima's body and leave the Sanctuary on her own schemes. It's why you can hear her talk through Shima last episode when Emilia came looking for Puck.

There are theories, but all unsubstantiated until we get more details of how she died, which is not necessarily accurate to known history as we learn more later.

nah its actually a completely different person, theres lots of theories but people think the echidna in the castle of dreams is probably a “successful” copy of herself that echidna made to guard her tomb. it would explain why their personalities are so different. imo, i think echidna split her personality in the same way satella accidentally did when her witch factor took over. except echinda did it on purpose to preserve her knowledge in a single vessel. which is why this echidna is so cruel, shes a full manifestation of the real echidna thirst for knowledge so she doesn’t understand human emotion. also echidna couldn’t create a body that could hold all her knowledge and power which would explain why she cant get a body and is just a soul hanging out in the tomb. although she manages to get one at the end of the this arc in a scene that wasnt added to the anime unfortunately. she even said she had to leave behind some of her knowledge in order to fit in a ryuzu copy the real echidna was actually kinda nice, she genuinely took care of roswaal and beatrice. and was trying to create a safe place with the sanctuary at one point

I don't think Bettys realtionship with Subaru is romantic. He likes Emilia and Rem and chose Emilia. Emilia and Rem like him and Petra has a child crush on him. I did actually dislike the sheer amount of female characters in this show too for a while, thinking it was harem bait shit. But then I watched a nice commentary video on Subarus view on women and his transactional view of relationship aka his "Nice Guy syndrome" that he started to overcome. He is a guy that thought "men are about guts and women are about beatuy" that got thrown into a world where every leading position is held by a woman and all of them even the maids are much stronger than him. He had to go on a journey where he had to redefine for himself what his masculinity means which is why he felt so worthless for a lot of the show. He set ideals for himself of what a man should be and could not live up to them in the slightest. In this way the size of the female cast was a narrative tool for him to grow.
