The bigger wheels are known to suck power as the load/rev ratios are considerably de-optomised. You effectively reduce the rev range and are half a gear ratio off optimum pretty much all the time. A diff ratio change is required to carry out a fair comparrison (or put the 200 back onto 33"wheels.)
I was thinking swap the wheels over and redo the tests, or fit both vehicles with identical wheel and tyre setup. It's hard to see the V8 dusted, but the sound wins every time.
Yep, that's 2 advancements in vehicles over the previous V8's. New V6 300 eats up the V8 200. 2.8 4 cylinder 70 eats up V8 70. Both new models putting V8's in the past, historical beasts. The 4 banger is really showing up how poultry the V8 was in the 70's, but I knew it was poor from owning one. Give these boys some slack, no one has modified and documented a 300 as much as these boys... The 200 is pushing big power, the 300 has potential to produce more power per cc purely because of the 300 cylinder head design.. Look how laid back the intake and exhaust valves are on the V6 vs the V8.. It's a 3cyl Yamaha yaris looking head on The diesel. Its all about the flame front in the combustion chamber.

I’ve owned a 200 long term and test driven the 300. It’s a superior gearbox in the 300, but you’ve hobbled the 200 for on road performance by running it with 35’s.
without even watching your video i will say this...the Last Man Standing will not be the 300 series! The V8 is detuned and will last a hell of a lot longer than the over tuned 300 series v6 engine blasting its guts out trying to put out the sort of performance it needs to in order to beat the V8. There is no denying that and at the end of the day, 8 cylinders is going to outlast 6 doing the same amount of work and that is what makes the 200 series a far better proposition. This is also why 79 series toyotas are so popular for touring...the engine (as you know is identical to the 200 series minus the twin turbo) is bullet proof and so bloody reliable...these v8's will be running years after the v6's have shit themselves! Should compare both on either 33's or 35's too as running the v6 on 33's makes a big difference in acceleration over the other car on 35's (even with the V8) Im know im being critical, but that aside...i love your show and watch it regularly.
I dont get the point of people doing these head to head battles but they have dufferent tire sizes lol. Its just a mute point and the whole experiment means nothing. Put the 200 on 33s or put the 300 on 35's, go get them both tuned and do it all again. I would expect the 300 to still win due to the gearbox but for such a big debut show, you would think they could get these basic things right.
Well that was skewed. Clearly you're trying to show the 300 is better for sponsorship reasons... do it again on 33s for both and I bet they will be far closer.
Yesterday on CarSales - I saw a chopped and canopy built 300 with most of the "fruit" for sale for $278K - that is unreal?!. You could build a Zombie Apocalypse NPS for the same but it is much bigger, tows more, and has twice the GVM etc......And can hold 6 people etc. I am retiring soon, and I am gonna build a NPS dual cab rig, my budget is 220K - that includes 1kw+ 48v Safiery solar, a Rainman desalination unit, and be able to be 100% off -grid ANYWHERE for as long as we want. Plus going to carry a tinny on top with 30HP and a fold down console, plus 2 x UBCO bikes. And we will also tow a boat. Love the 200/300/79, but for the price - a NPS is 10 times better and cheaper!!!!!. Only benefit of the latter Toyota cars is they can negotiate the tough narrow extreme trails better, and also the diesel costs are a bit less.
Some people are probably more interested in a comparison showing the difference between the 2 cars with same tyres no modifications pulling the same weight min 3 T to 3.5 T. Anyone can modify a car and results with enough money. Try using what most people would use for a true comparison. We would truly like the see a fair comparison that isn't skewed either way.
I've gone from a tuned 2020 200 to a GR sport 300 and yeah the 300 kills it "everywhere" saying that the tyre difference on your test would make a fair bit of difference. I've done 33's to 35's and noticed big drop in performance.
2" makes a huge difference, especially if the 33s are ATs and the 35s are MTs. Also building up the boost on the 300 it's like cheating, the race sound have been done from idle. Finally I'd like to see the rigs out on a scale to get some concrete weight numbers as built.
I'd have either if you gave me one but for my money the V8 and that lovely sound it makes just sold it to me when I built my troopy, which I'll never sell (so much so that I bought a new crate motor, pump, injectors sitting in the garage along side my sporty). My daily is a Grand Cherokee, which I love driving and despite the bad press it gets has been very reliable, now with 300Kkm. Am thinking about a new Lexus 550 with the 3.4tt V6 as my new daily tho.
I got both 200 and 300 on 33s. 300 still smacks the 200 even on same tyres. No comparison. The technology/gearbox is what it is. I used to get in the 300 and have that voice in my head say "but it is not a V8". A year later, the voices in my head have gone, and I prefer driving the 300. Still have the 200 as well though. A few glaring differences shown in the testing. 1st. Clearly the 300 has better gearing through the transmission. 2nd. Tyre size advantages the 300. And thirdly, What is the weight difference between the 2?
Well my 80 series went from 33 to 35 and haven’t noticed a huge amount of power change , it’s a little slower but it’s also had a new rebuilt motor in it during the tyre change and it wasn’t properly tuned unlike the last motor was 🤷🏻♂️
Its got a lot to do with more gears especially when towing, that why semi's have lots of gears. Back in the day some cars only had 3 gears, nowadays it's a lot more.
The 300 has more power and torque, a 10 speed auto instead of a 6 speed, launch control and "33s it stands to reason it will be quicker at the same weight. 6 or 8 cylinders is a mute point here. But the V8 sounds soooo much better!! 😊.
For most families with kids using the bench seat in the rear, the 300 has a transmission hump which effectively makes it a 4 seater. The flat floor on the 200 plus the significantly extra legroom and near flat floor can accommodate 5 adults a lot more comfortably. The 200 Series wagon can even fit two 40 litre refrigerators with the 3rd row seats in use. Zero chance of doing that in the 300 Series, so where did all that interior space go? If you want to install a roofrack, the 200 Series is way superior in terms of maximum roof loading capacity. The 300 Series has a more flexible gearbox with the extra 4 forward gears. If this gearbox can be fitted to a 200 Series, it would be simply awesome.
Put a 6 cylinder Barra in that 200 and then you will have a fair comparison as so many old Toyota owners are now doing with Australian muscle and towing capacity? There is no roof loading capacity published on the 300 to hold a roof top tent because the structural stenght has been compromised.
with the 200 you need to get at trans tune as well as a engine tune, the hill out of the Adelaide hills is so steep and long, our 200 pulled 3.5 ton up at 110km/h all the way, and its only making 280hp at the wheels.
That could all be put down to tyre size, and so a degree difference in tune, gears etc. While that's interesting, if you want apples for apples, its stock for stock. Soon as you start tuning, it becomes much more difficult to keep it truly comparable (apples for apples) as tuning a presumably lower revving v8 with 8 speed is vastly different to (again a presumably higher revving v6) with 10 gears and a lighter body. It was an interesting result, but not apples for apples. Then there is 10 years difference in tech.

Why the heck do Queenslanders fall to keep left unless overtaking?!
Notice he tells the h/p figures but does'nt mention what the torque figures of both cars are , that would be interesting to know
Jesus that written off Chevy aged you a bit mate
best vid I've seen in Ages .... 300 for me
🤣 a comparison and you couldn't throw the same rims and tyres on both cars?
Come on mate, you were a proud GU owner once, it did most thing at a 1/8 of the cost of those fancy toyo's.
Yeah yeah yeah still v8 every day
The day the haul trucks go to a smaller motor to pull big loads is the day I would look at a highly strung v6 .
200 is also a heavier car
Not a true comparison
No way, 300 start before 200, it is obvious
Love how he keeps saying “other than that completely stock” after he has just finished up telling us the 200 ways it isn’t stock.
The tundra does have the towing options built in
Nice toyota add
Swap wheels and try again for a fair comparison !
G'day, Having drived a V6 Diseasel for about 12 years now I am not serprised as to this result.
Come off it 33's 35's even it up and do a real comparison
Come on Jase. You know better then this. This wasn't a real world test. 35s v 33s. Make them both even with tyre sizes and weights and test again.
I smell BS
My 200 is running 24psi boost at 290hp at all 4 wheels standed turbos and injectors. And is 3.5T
And you jumped the start.
Sorry the only thing going for the 300 is the 10 speed ford found on rubbish dump trans. Good luck with that.
And im running 35s with diff gear 4.33 so on 35s im at standard running ratio. Toyota must have payed you some money 💰
You got rid of the best towing and heavy use vehicles on the planet, your F250, you would hit 160km up that hill, hard to advertise as the toughest tourers, they are both mid range at best.
Wow😲
I don't not pick that .
Can you do more tests like that.
U may have changed my mind about the 300.
But the best test will be the toyota Tacoma?????
Why would you use launch control ! Obvious advantage
dude, run the same size tires!!!!! This whole vid is a waste after that mention.
What about 79 series Lang cruiser
It's 4 cylinder variant eats it unfortunately in other tests.
They tyre difference make it too compromised to be able to do a full comparison. A dyno test would tell us more
The Dmax for the win
