    Great siren. One of the best I've heard in a long while.

    I love how it goes from Attack, right into Alert, then right back to Attack mode with no pause in between.

    You are hearing 2 and of 3 Federal Signal STH-10 Tornado Sirens that serve the Miles City Area. The mystery siren shown is dormant.

    Thank You! I was actually planning on going up and getting some shot of the siren up close. If I can, I will post some other shots of it.

  • @bigskyweather

    You are absolutley correct. The siren you are seeing is currently retired. You are hearing an STH-10 from about a block away. It is resounding off of the court house building. They hope to relocate and reactivate this siren in Southgate Meadows, our suburb to the south.

      1. Not all sirens have motors. Many don't. 2. I never said you were the one who uploaded the video. 3. The video uploader can't edit someone else's comments anyway.
      (EDIT: Oh, wait, your old comment was made back before YT let us edit them, and even now, can't be edited. So never mind that.)

      @@HelloKittyFanMan. You can clearly hear a motor winding up and down unlike what electronic sirens are known to do.

    • @HelloKittyFanMan.
      @HelloKittyFanMan. 2 года назад +1

      @@Cnw8701: 1. What we're hearing do sound like 2 mechanical sirens. 2. But that's not because you can hear the motor; it's because mechanical sirens have a certain kind of timbre that a typical electronic siren doesn't have. 3. Thus, we don't actually hear the motors of these sirens. 4. The poster already told us that the set of horns we're looking at isn't a mechanical siren. So I don't know why it's the center of attention in the video's picture. 5. So unless you know alarm models really well by shape, you can't know that what we're looking at is just a diaphone (which is also mechanical, but in a much different way than a mechanical siren is).

  • @bigskyweather
    @bigskyweather  17 лет назад +2

    A lot of people think we don't even have tornadoes. We are a very large state and most of the tornadoes miss cities. That is probably why you don't hear about many.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 16 лет назад +1

    Actually, HeavyMetal, MOST sirens--even mechanical ones, ARE electric. But of course the mechanical ones just are not electrONic. There's a difference. Mechanical ones can be electic or fuel-powered (as the Chrysler V8 air-raid siren) or hand-powered or even air-powered (as the HLS--except that I don't know if the HLS is completely pneumatic or just partially, as a mix of air and electricity like with Thunderbolts).

    On the Pacific coast, most sirens sound a tsunami warning of a prolonged, steady tone. In the Midwest, most (but not all) communities use this for a tornado warning. This comes from the days when a rising-falling siren (attack) was reserved for civil defence use. As in many parts of Europe, the fire signal was traditionally three or four long, slow blasts, but today it can be anything.

  • @bigskyweather
    @bigskyweather  17 лет назад +1

  • @audinos4827
    @audinos4827 16 лет назад

    The siren you're hearing is an STH-10 that is not visible in the video.
    In the 1950's, sirens had three signals: "fire," which was usually three long blasts to call volunteers, "alert," which was a 3-5 minute steady blast to warn of an impending attack, and "attack," a 3-5 minute rising-falling signal that an attack (i.e. nuclear missile) was happening. Most Midwestern communities use a steady "alert" tone for tornado warning, as do Pacific coastal communities for a tsunami warning.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.

    So, Robertgift, just like those bigger sirens I mentioned, these have horns that appear as if they could be the INTAKES, while just like those others, you can't really see the OUTLETS, and that might be the case with these, too.
    As for beat notes, now that's something I'd have to look into further. But notice that sometimes 1 or 2 of these 3 goes or go off into a different kind of signal than 1 or 2 of the others, so then that's a whole different thing than the beat note thing, huh?

    And YES, electrONic sirens (meaning sirens without moving parts that make their sound) DO have a wind-down sound, or else they could only be hi-low- or steady-toned. But it seems that most of them don't wind their sound ALL the way down like mechanical sirens do.

    MaxxFordham's response:
    Oh, really? HOW old? That's a relative term. Just because a siren is old doesn't mean that it's mechanical. I bet ya that they made some electronic sirens a long time ago, too. How long ago? '70s? '60s? I don't know. But true, the older you go, it would make sense that the LESS LIKELY they're electronic.

    Naww, police sirens are just electronic rather than mechanical-pneumatic, so while they're loud, they don't have that armor-piercing scream that these sirens that slash up the air that they suck in can have.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 16 лет назад

    These sirens, as most of them, ARE electric. But they might NOT be electrONic. There is a difference. Sirens that aren't electric are either fuel-powered (as with the Chrysler V8 air raid siren) or hand-powered, or perhaps air-powered (maybe like the HLS, but I'm not sure if it's completely pneumatic or just partly). And then those that are electric could either be mechanical or electrONic.

    Are we not also hearing other distant sirens in addition to this cluster of three?
    If their rotor speeds are not identical, they will produce frequencies slightly different from one another. Those frequencies will produce "beat" notes. I don't hear any beat notes here.
    Also, they appear too small to make the frequencies heard.
    Very interesting.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Toletman,
    Yes, I can see from the picture in the alternate-views video that these sirens are independent of each other. But that doesn't change what I was saying that whether or not the sirens are independent they would sound "more normal" (except for the little effect RobertGift was talking about) or if they could have the same RPMs.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 16 лет назад

    Well, Coolgyger, it doesn't HAVE to be electronic, because they could have made an electronic siren that coasts all the way down. But, well, they probably didn't... anyway, the point is that they COULD have. So it doesn't HAVE to be mechanical, but it probably is.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 16 лет назад

    Yes, I hit reply under someone else's reply to a reply, and it gets sent out here to "main," rather than under that reply. And it's been doing that a lot. Hmm...
    Well, isn't it actually the OUTlets you're looking for? The intakes on mechanical sirens ARE the front part where most of the sound comes out.

    But if you're looking for OUTLETS (usually right at the spaces in the stator that are blocked off repeatedly by the rotor), then check out these sirens: You know that the Tempest T135 and Federal Signal one that looks like that and others that look like those are mechanical, and you can't see the OUTLETS of those, either, can you? They look kind-of like jumbo versions of these 3 here, don't they? And even Thunderbolts: where do we see their outlets?

    How often do the eastern counties of Montana test their sirens? In Cascade and Lewis and Clark counties, we don't have dependable warning systems for tornadoes, simply because we rarely, if ever, have tornadoes. When I moved to Missouri for school, I learned that they test the storm sirens every month.

    1. You could have motors tied together by some mechanical means and they of course could STILL have the same RPMs--but then if the rotors were tied together, they'd probably just need one motor.
    2. They could sound normal even if they weren't independent of each other, or if they were. The only difference would probably be the slight variations between each if they were SEPARATE, which Robert Gift mentions (something about a wave beat or something like that).
