A friend purchased a house in the country complete with a swimming pool (I know, insane especially in Ireland but stil) which they left empty except for whatever water came with the rain. Like that for years until one day he accidentally discovered he had a thriving colony of newts - crested I think but not certain. He promptly turned it into a pond complete with water plants and then - and no idea where they came from - found a couple of fish in there (guesses dropped by a bird but no real idea). He now has a thriving wildlife pond with so many newts that he has dug two more ponds in the grounds for them to breed in in case something goes wrong with the pool, the two fish seem to have bred because there are now a lot more and he has acquired a couple of ducks who arrived and never left plus some others who come and go depending on the season. Great video and this is the sort of pond I prefer. The pool still looks like a swimming pool despite all the water plants and wildlife, this looks like a proper pond (think village green style pond)
Love fishing, love ponds, love aquariums. Looking forward to see this restored. Hope this guy realises how lucky he is to have a pond like that. Good times.
The family who own this pond really enjoy it and are working with nature to keep this pond a part of their lifestyle for years to come. Check out our other videos, I’m sure you’ll find more stuff that you like
Loving the channel, i am the fishery officer at my local club and trying to learn more on fishery management, we had a similar ptoblem with one of our small "stock" ponds,we netted the pool and had a jcb come in to dredge it,then did exactly what you have done with aerator, we use a charles austen et pump, the pool is a 1/3 acre so needed a lot bigger pump than you used,we have now a thriving pool with happy fish and good water quality, keep the videos coming, loving it
It’s great to have other people in the trade enjoy and comment on our videos, we can all learn a lot from eachother. The Schlixx stuff is great for breaking down sludge and detritus at the bottom of ponds and lakes if you ever need it. Are you in the U.K.?
I'm just starting out really, yes I'm in the Midlands,I've had a lot of advice from Tom, our local environment agency officer,he has been a godsend for information,I'll have a look for the shlixx stuff, thanks for the info
I always love hanging out with you guys! Sidenote >I think I saw recently that the U.K. has lost around 80% of its ponds in the past 100 years. Conservation is vital!
Love the natural feel of this one, looks so pretty with all of the trees! Thanks for showing us the newts, not something you see every day, grateful for the care you are showing them. Can’t wait for the next one!
It was over two hours of footage we had to go through to make this video. Maybe one day we could do a members only section where we upload the lot and let the hardcore fans enjoy it 😁
Superb video just come across you guys now 🙏. Beautiful pond looking forward to seing how this turns out. The care and attention to detail you have is second to none 👌
Thank you so much, it really means a lot. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss out. And let me know what you think of some of the other ponds we have restored 👍🏻
Must be an incredibly satisfying job that. There's something about creating a healthy habitat that has been left to fester for a long time. If only the EA did the same for our rivers & canals.
It is very satisfying. Sometimes we wish we could see the full impact of our work sooner, but we work to help the ecosystem better itself over time also which creates a longer lasting effect and this takes time
I'm doing an ecology degree so as soon as you said newts I thought you better be careful because of the GCN but you knew what you were doing so I wasn't concerned. Keep up the work
Only some smooths in this pond but we do occasionally come across the cresteds. We tend not to handle them at all in most cases as it’s usually not necessary. But occasionally I think it’s nice to show the viewers. Always make sure to wet our hands first or even better don a pair of gloves 👍🏻
Built a 1500/2000L pond with a river and bog filter but it's quite quickly turning green. Trying to get out ahead of it. Pump is running at about 8k litres and hour.
Two or three ducks will remove it all very fast. Best biocontrol, but remove the ducks after they are done or they will be a nuisance while fishing and poop everywhere.
It would be cool if before u stock it fully to go fishing there with the owner permission to go fishing it see if there any fish in there already and do a fish species acessament to see what in there and then you know what to stock and rough numbers
@@Mountain_Aquatics probley fry or small fish that get through the net or to fast or up against the trees and what size mesh was it you could also try fish traps and diy minnow traps
Hi there I don't think a jcb will do it for you. You will need a 360 machine. Because the jcb will just get stuck. Just saying as I've done this thing before on a old lake in Wiltshire which was a bit bigger than your one. But good luck with what you're doing.
Thanks for the info, our aim is to avoid such heavy machinery whenever we can. We prefer a softer approach even if this sometimes means the finished result takes longer. Look out for the update coming soon

Eager to see how this turns out. Happy to see a more natural pond than the usual brick koi pond in a courtyard.
yes defiantly has a different feel to it

This has to be much harder to do than in a more contained man made pond. Really great that you are recording this process. Thanks.

Was that nitrite reading correct? I have the API and good Nitrite should be light blue shouldn’t it?
yes that was a mistake, it was actually the nitrate level. Nitrite was re done off camera, good spot though ;)

I find Newts fascinating. I'm amazed by where i find them, rock quarries in the middle of nowhere for instance, how do they find these places?
Many years of migration and changes in the landscape. There will usually be a water source nearby as they have to breed in water
Let us know what you think ❤
In America we have what are called seine nets, I use them on small ponds like that all the time to skim the top
Just found this Chanel really looking forward to seeing how this turns out
Thank you Tom, take a look at our other pond videos 😁

Really enjoying the content! Any suggestions for begging of some blanket weed on a new pond?
What do you mean?
Built a 1500/2000L pond with a river and bog filter but it's quite quickly turning green. Trying to get out ahead of it. Pump is running at about 8k litres and hour.
Should be fine with that set up. Might just need time to establish mate. Have to just remove by hand for now
I did one very similar to your s ,just put carp in and otters wiped it out
Not too many otters round these parts. Hopefully we will be fine
That floating weed is a nightmare, is there anything that can shift it?
Not really. It practically doubled in a day. It doesn’t like water movement. And there are some fish that will eat it (goldfish love it!)
Two or three ducks will remove it all very fast. Best biocontrol, but remove the ducks after they are done or they will be a nuisance while fishing and poop everywhere.
Soooo, what does the finished pond look like?
Nearly getting there, there will be a few more updates in time.
Can you tell me the product you use to break down sludge in a pond. Thanks Ed

I've got a brick koi pond there's nothing wrong with that bert that's a Welsh term
How big is your pond?
@@Mountain_Aquatics my koi pond is only fourteen feet by twelve feet and four feet six deep that's good enough for my garden it runs along side my shed that is twenty seven feet by eight feet love it have a nice day bert 👍👍👌

😂. 🐕
Pour in two gallon vodka. In two days it will be clear.
I’ve never heard that one before?
@@Mountain_Aquatics i would imagine any type of alcohol would work. But in a swimming pool it kills all the algae and drop the particle suspension.
Seriously beautiful pond. Shame to ruin it
Depends what you’re in to and how you look at things, but I think we have taken a very soft approach with this pond and will be maintaining its natural look
Once the fish are in you will loose all the newts!
There are other ponds nearby. And it has a lot of shallower areas where the newts will be happy
To do a proper job to de silt that pond you will need to get a jcb to get it out cem will not do anything
And what experience have you got to support these claims ?
"The PH is about, between 7.4 and 7.6" . . . So 7.5 then 😂🤦🏻♂️
🤣 fair point 🤣
