My mom and step dad grounded me and I wasn’t allowed to use any electronics. My dad bought me a iPod nano for Christmas that year. My mom and step dad never found out. I would sneak up to our family computer in the middle of the night and put music on it. I still have the damn thing - 15 years later. Thanks dad.

These did have a purpose for many people who want them, for example sometimes it's best to get a kid an iPod vs a 1000 dollar phone, discontinuing them made no sense because there was still a demand for them.

The click wheel on that thing was a thing of beauty. Alas, that could never happen as iPhone far exceeds the capabilities of even the latest iPod and the model itself was long discontinued.
The first tech product that I bought myself was early in high school, my best friend dropped his iPod touch and cracked the screen badly. He went and bought a new one and bought the cracked one for $40. I cut my finger on the little shards of glass regularly for the next 4 years when my then girlfriend spilled a drink on it. Rest in peace old friend
I get why Apple stopped making iPods, because the latest ones where basically just iPhones that couldn’t call, you could still send iMessages, still use FaceTime, and everything else the same as iPhone, the only reason to get an iPod was if there was a specific need to make sure calls couldn’t be placed.
The iPod was the first Apple product I owned. I’ve still got it, unfortunately the screen is cracked, it still works but the battery doesn’t last as long as it used to.
I recently removed the hard drive from my ipod gen 6 and installed a flash drive. Also removed the dinky small battery and installed a larger size battery that fills the back shell. The ipod runs much more efficient and I can go days and days without recharging!
When I was in high school I would fix the 2nd and 3rd generation ones and would often rip the volume control cables. Then when I fix it came out it was much easier to get parts and have guides
Think this is sad. There is definitely a market for these. Now, the entry point to digital music requires an iPhone or computer so several hundred dollars just to listen to music.
I still have my 6th gen iPod classic, and I now have a 7th gen iPod touch. I’m actually using it right now. The classic still works, I got like 1000 songs on it

Still have a 4GB mini from that year and holds about 20 minutes of play time. That click wheel is still a fun interface.
Mine’s a 4gb one and the housing is in terrible condition and the screen has been bent with a swollen battery.
