I've always had a local music collection. Services like Pandora and Spotify just facilitate discovery. I'm a singles listener though, and I think that's what a lot of music streaming is geared towards.
I do love retrofitting older tech to more modern standards and/or compatibilities. my car is from 2005, so it's from that awkward phase where bluetooth or aux input weren't common but cassette decks were rare to find, and therefore doesn't have any native way to interact with pretty much anything but a CD. I installed a new head unit that allows for android auto or carplay and it's really quite a big quality of life improvement. sure it looks like a hacked-together mess but having a GPS and streaming music is pretty nice. in a similar vein, I've seen people add wireless charging coils to Nintendo Switches, using bluetooth dongles for ancient headphones, and then there's the wealth of upgrades available for Gameboys. hell even cfw for the PS3 and Vita probably count as adapting them to the current age. there's some cool projects to be done in this retrofitting space and I'm glad people are interested in maintaining, repairing, or improving what they already have (or more likely giving life to something they bought second-hand but I digress).
I’ve got a late 2006 5th gen slim with a classic faceplate and a 3,000mah battery. It also has 256gb storage (1 sd card, I’m not sure why you’d use the quad for low capacity when the solo is cheaper and easier) and taptic. Really it’s to a point where it could be a modern product, the specs are more than enough for my everyday use. BTW, the scroll wheel is an issue with replacements, I’ve had a few with this issue. You’re better off buying refurbished ones that put new plastic on the old pcb. The only thing I’d say it’s missing is the diymod. Maybe wireless charging, but I hardly ever have to charge it anyways. You can retheme rockbox to look just like the stock software, and tons of other stuff. There’s hundreds of themes, I can’t imagine not using rockbox with your flac files just because the default theme is bad.
The Quad is smaller and makes modding Thinner models w/ bigger batteries possible. Think people say it is basically required to use a Quad if you're putting like 3,000mah in a Thin model
As someone who tried desperately to get Rockbox as close as possible to the look of the stock Apple OS, it's just not the same. Nowadays if I were to consider jumping back into Rockbox I think the best usage is for someone who doesn't care about it mimicking the stock OS.
Cool video! I love my iPod, thank you for doing it justice. FYI, Rockbox is very themable. There are themes like iRB_Video/Classic for imitating the original SW; and iRB_Modern/Interpod for an interface closer to the modern Apple Music app. The only thing that really took getting used to is the database export/imports and the clickwheel changes-- but I got used to them pretty fast. Plus, no iTunes is needed; you can load FLACs onto it, as if it were a USB drive.
That's a great modded iPod you've built! And yeah, the battery life with one of those upgraded batteries is pretty amazing. I remember testing a 7th gen with a similarly-sized battery as the one you used and it ran for 5 and a half days continuously.
So I understand why people had gripes with iTunes being required. I really do. But what I don't think people fully grasp is the things that iTunes can do that a drag and drop file browser-type experience can't. Smart playlists being the most obvious. But there is a single checkbox which is absolutely *critical* to me, and not even the open source iTunes alternatives support it. You can set a song to "Skip when shuffling". It's a godsend for interludes, outtakes or other such tracks that makes sense in the context of an album but NOT as an individual experience. Also, two features added with the release of the iPod shuffle: 1 - you can have it automatically downconvert your tracks to a lossy (or lower bitrate) format, which is helpful for lower-capacity iPods like a Shuffle or a nano. But another thing it can do is fill the device with randomly selected music until it is full, which is another amazing feature that works well for shuffles or nanos when your library is too big to fit.

Saying that iPod had interface is such a damn stretch. There is no interface, its just lists on blank white space. Worst interface i ever interacted with. Also it made mess if your music metadata isnt in order. It never was for us back in the day.
@@tzukima iFlash Quad is more like a prototype, no need to use all 4 slots. Let's imagine for 1 card fail rate is 5%. For 4 of them it will be ~20%. yeah im sorry but anyone that can listen to the same music for long enough to use an mp3 player doesnt really love music. i constantly have to find new music and i dont wanna have to save it to a different device every time i find a new song i like (usually at least once a day)
Couldn't disagree more. Ownership of music is a huge advantage, and you could still use a Spotify just to have an online log of music you want to listen to, but not being shackled to WiFi or algorithms means you have a better attachment to music especially those songs that are meant to be listened to as a part of an album.
yeah couldn’t disagree more either, this is entirely false. i love music, im a musician myself. music is my entire life and i love ipods, got a huge collection. if i wanna discover new music, i use youtube. then will add it to my library. my main playlist on youtube is 800+ songs, which would take 3 days to listen to all of it in one go. i have about half that on my ipod library and it’s so much nicer to hit shuffle and listen to music. sure, if your library is small yeah it does get annoying to listen to the same song every day but my ipods library still expands and i hear different songs every day and plenty of space on my ipod for it. and as @A2Adam said ownership of my music is better than spotify. if any any point they go under, my library is gone. on itunes, i burned everything in my library onto CDs and apple can’t take that away from me no matter what happens to itunes.
@@wishdankpods Not to mention music bought from the iTunes store has no DRM! I can't speak for quality if you're an audiophile but that's a big advantage.
@@A2Adam honestly for me it's perfectly fine, i definitely am a bit picky when it comes to my songs audio quality but the best thing i've got are some IEMs and airpods pro 2nd gens so for what i listen out of, everything has sounded great. not sure if you can get lossless on itunes bc ik u can get lossless on apple music but that's a totally different service
Dude if your reading this if you create the database for the ipod just once it will do the rest for you and if you go to database its like browsing your regular ipod for albums artists and playlists if you made any.
@@tzukima yeah for rockbox. I use it all the time cause I don't want to go through itunes. I like how I can keep everything organized without it. Also every card adds a little bit of power consumption for the controller, nand, etc. It's better in terms of reliability and battery life to use less cards.
5:41 then use apple music
i am now!

Calling the touch an iPod is already a stretch. If it doesn’t have the dial it’s not an iPod.
ipod touch is more like an ipad nano
Aye dgd 👌
An AI device in a iPod classic case would be perfect
Nah spotify is nice
yeah im sorry but anyone that can listen to the same music for long enough to use an mp3 player doesnt really love music. i constantly have to find new music and i dont wanna have to save it to a different device every time i find a new song i like (usually at least once a day)
Couldn't disagree more. Ownership of music is a huge advantage, and you could still use a Spotify just to have an online log of music you want to listen to, but not being shackled to WiFi or algorithms means you have a better attachment to music especially those songs that are meant to be listened to as a part of an album.
"u don't love your hobby unless you do it like meeee"
yeah couldn’t disagree more either, this is entirely false. i love music, im a musician myself. music is my entire life and i love ipods, got a huge collection. if i wanna discover new music, i use youtube. then will add it to my library. my main playlist on youtube is 800+ songs, which would take 3 days to listen to all of it in one go. i have about half that on my ipod library and it’s so much nicer to hit shuffle and listen to music. sure, if your library is small yeah it does get annoying to listen to the same song every day but my ipods library still expands and i hear different songs every day and plenty of space on my ipod for it. and as @A2Adam said ownership of my music is better than spotify. if any any point they go under, my library is gone. on itunes, i burned everything in my library onto CDs and apple can’t take that away from me no matter what happens to itunes.
Dude if your reading this if you create the database for the ipod just once it will do the rest for you and if you go to database its like browsing your regular ipod for albums artists and playlists if you made any.
are you talking about rockbox?
@@tzukima yeah for rockbox. I use it all the time cause I don't want to go through itunes. I like how I can keep everything organized without it. You just need to rebuild the database once unless you add more music again. Also it acts like a media controller when plugged in to your PC so the click wheel is the volume control and the rest you know. I watched a lot of dankpods so he go me back into using one and rockbox has been really useful for avoiding iTunes.
I'm still using my iPod classic 5.5 and modded to have ssd and new yellow faceplate. ❤
all my joeys gone
