Re: Your point about respecting the vehicle. The absolute worst is school run time when you'll get parents or nannies in the back with several kids doing a 10 min journey but suddenly decide to break out a picnic. I've had everything from juice all over the seats, to blueberries, biscuits all over the floor and popcorn. It then takes me 10 mins to clean it all before i can get another job. Very annoying. I don't understand why people can't wait 10 mins until they get home.
That's terrible. The same with buses, I used to pick up rubbish in the bus at the terminus when I first started but soon got fed up. But later I worked for a company where it was my job to clean the bus after the shift and wished people would not eat sweets - it was always the sweet packets that would burst and then they don't pick them up "cos it's dirty" and leave them to be trodden on.

Why would you take that fair then? At least before they got in a stern admonishment of no food nor eating in the cab? Desperate to make money doesn’t work well, it creates a mindset with negative consequences. Customer Service myself over 40 yrs retired. Once you know your worth and act like it the money flows. This was a hard lesson for me to acquire! I feel for any and all who rely on a tipped income, AND pay for the ‘privelage’ of paying to own. Rona did it’s job well y’all! 🙏🏻🤔

Neither is dealing with taxi drivers that just want to talk. I want to get in, say hello, tell them where I am going and then enjoy the journey - not have to site answering loads of questions. The other problem I find really annoying is not using bus lanes when they are empty and the rest of the road is jammed. In Liverpool, taxis are allowed to use the bus lanes 24hours. When the roads are busy they sit in the traffic and it takes ages to get anywhere, when it is quiet, they go in the bus lanes! I even confirmed with the council licencing and they said yes, the taxis can use bus lanes. Another annoyance is cherry picking, drivers trying to give a price and taking you home without wanting to put the meter on. Refusal to give a receipt for expenses, or to go just a few miles from the City Centre when it is busy, the reason being that he could do a lot of shorter jobs in the same time, would have to go to the back and he is waiting for train passengers outside a station only, not people walking up to the rank! Unbelievable reasons are given. I got quoted £65 to go 5 miles at 1am on a Sunday morning, meter off, or no journey! I didn't accept. What these rogues do not realise is that the "taxi police" often go out. They give every other driver a bad name. Not all drivers are like this, but there are a lot. Saying that, I feel much safer in a black taxi than a private hire or Uber.

I think the reason behind a lot of these is that London taxis are the exception. I most cities around the world, taxi drivers drive like maniacs, don't know a lot of streets or destinations (because they're usually from halfway across the planet and never had to do any tests like the Knowledge), and they do try to rip you off. So I generally have my guard up and my Google Maps on whenever I'm in a taxi. So I'm not surprised that people also take that same attitude to London when they travel.
Driving a taxi for 14 years now, I get next to no confrontation, I must give out an air of authority now 😀. After the initial conversation on where they want to go, I won't talk unless spoken to. I keep all my opinions " matter of fact" whether I feel strongly about something or not. If there are multiple ways, I will sometimes mention if they prefer one or another, put the onus on them. I keep it light by sometimes saying when stuck in traffic I know a different way but it could be as bad. I hate it when someone leaves a bottle of water rolling around the back, the noise at first gets me thinking something's wrong with the cab 😮 great video Tom.
I was a passenger in a bus and had to throw out someone's empty beer bottle and I was thinking the suspension is gone on this bus, till I looked behind me and saw it rolling about in the Metro newspaper basket.
I needed to get a cab from GOSH to Kings hospital in a hurry, so flagged a cab down and wouldn’t of dreamt of haggling with the driver. I receive. I use cabs all the time in London and personally appreciate the service they provide, taking into account as a wheelchair user where they can pick me up and set me down. I’m more than happy to pay for the service. Keep up the good work Tom.
Guess what. I'm a Hackney cab driver in Grimsby, and while we don't have some of the problems our metropolitan cousins have, many of the points being made in this video are indeed relatable. I also love it when passengers tell me which route to take from the off. If there are two potential routes to a destination I often ask if they have a preferred route. If they ask for a price, I inflate it it so they get a nice surprise at the end (often paying the difference as a tip). Leaving rubbish is one thing, letting your three year old piss themselves and soaking the seat, then leaving without telling me is considerably worse (thank heavens for leather upholstery). I pretty much nodded along with this entire video. Cheers.
Great videos. Got some great ideas from watching. Coming back to London for the first time in 35 years. Sounds like nowadays you pay when you’re still inside. You used to get out and pay through the drivers side window unless it was pouring rain. In passing in a video you said something about through the window so I gather you still give your destination through the window before you get in. Cheers!
I like hearing the truth and this kind of video that says it how it is! Good for you, fun to hear, and hope people watching appreciate that rising above these things can be great advice for life!
Dealing with the public sucks a lot of the time. It seems like people are getting worse. At least from my perspective as an American that lives is Metro Detroit. I manage a self storage facility and Holy hell, people are so rude!
The funniest time I was in a taxi was going home from work when the trains were off - the driver was so entertaining. One of the black cabs stopped by the replacement rail bus queue and said, "If anyone is wanting a ride to where the bus is stopping, split it between you and it will be (however much)". He not only did that, but called all his mates who brought a whole fleet of black cabs, got the whole queue in and only charged us about £2 each! Amazing of the drivers to do this, but they said they had seen people waiting up to 90mins and were helping out.
Do you ever get people who just say "Here's £10. Just drive anywhere."? I'm thinking bored people and sightseers do this, as I knew a school pal who just enjoyed riding in taxis and had a lot of money to waste who did this.
Only once has I got in a cab and asked the driver to not spare the horses. I was going from Waterloo to Euston for the sleeper my inbound train arrived 2 hours late due to a trespasser. I chatted to the driver all the way and calmed down a bit, he did all the fare before we arrived and got an extra tip. I made it with 5mins to spare. I almost complained about a driver as I needed a puff of my asthma inhaler and he told me I couldn’t take it in his taxi. So I asked him to pull over and I got out. The next one that came along was much nicer.
I stopped for a couple in the rain one night and the guy was holding a pint beer glass half full, I said "ok but you can't bring the beer in the cab" He said okay and we drove off, I then look in my mirror and he was drinking the beer so I pulled over and asked them to get out, which they did. He called me a few names but I won't be disrespected in such an obvious way.
Waterloo to Euston A few years ago we had booked and paid for a train up north to collect a new (to us car) the person selling phoned us in the morning to say the car's clutch has gone ad will be fixed on the Monday. Ahh. Money waisted on booked seats from Euston. Then at the 11th hour got a call, "it's ready". Legged it to our local station, only just caught the Waterloo train as the doors were closing. Still looked impossible. Leapt on a black Cab. "Euston, really urgent please", as he sped off, explained what happened. I know central London. He took an odd route, but kept getting to landmarks I knew in an impossible time. Got to Euston just in time (but was so, so close). Fare was just a little over £20. "Hears £40, keep the change!" I will never use an Uber. Always trust a London cabby
Love the video! When you mentioned at the end about annoying a taxi driver… I work at sea, after landing at the closest airport to the ship there’s often a taxi arranged to go to a hotel before joining. One time I was joining in Buenos Aires and thought I was going to get lynched, after quite a nice chat the driver asked my nationality. I said Scottish in the hope he wouldn’t link it to the U.K. as at the time the tension was high regarding the Falklands. Suddenly he fell silent and kept staring at me through the mirror. We then pulled off the highway and went down a dark alleyway. After a few nervous turns we came out onto the main road again where I recognised where we were. I tried to lighten the mood but there was still no answer. Thankfully made it obviously. 😂
There are people of all kinds. I was in a taxi rank, waiting for clients with other three cabs. I see two guys walking up and down beside me and the other two cabs, looking at their phone and trying to book a taxi through an app they couldn't even understand how to use. We had to convince them if they wanted a cab all they had to do was get one of us available there. The whole process lasted ten minutes.. we had to explain to them that calling a cab through the app would have got them the same taxi from the same taxi rank they were standing on! It basically made no sense but they were too busy on their mobile. It took a lot of trying to get them to take one of us !
Great video(s), thanks. Apologies if there's already a video about this, but...What about when you absolutely know when you're not being taken "by the cotton", you know the area/driven the area/ know the closures etc, but you're being taken right round the houses? Happened to me a few weeks ago. I absolutely respect your knowledge ( I used to help a friend with his "call overs" when he was doing The Knowledge...'kin 'ell!). I realised it was 11pm and the the rate was higher, but...What was a 4 mile journey ended up at £50 and NOT through but traffic! I challenged it (even the route he was taking, during the journey) and got it down to £30. I even told him to take me to a police station, 'cause I wasn't taking being mugged off.
My brothers a milkman and they are told to follow their handsets for routes, but the handset routes go the long way around everywhere and miss jobs close to each other, which when you are driving an electric vehicle with limited miles you are forced to route for yourself or be stranded in the middle of the night waiting for rescue.
I got quoted £50 once. Meter came up £30. He wanted to fix the price rather than use the meter, cause it was 4am, Piccadilly Circus, and we have Northern accents.
6:46 Whenever I am in the UK I completely trust the drivers to complete their routes because time and time again The Knowledge both in London and in Edinburgh has worked perfectly. Athens (Greece) taxis are not required to pass such a test. Either the driver has been doing this long enough to know most of the streets in Athens, lives nearby to your destination as to know the local roads, is a young lad so he relies on sat-nav and maps or you have to spell out the route once you get more specific.
Even if you know a route is closed, you should drive to the actual ‘Road Closed’ sign and THEN say ‘oh, the road’s closed, I’ll take the back roads’. Then there’s no doubting your integrity. That case was a perfect example as they didn’t know because it was open earlier
As for giving the driver directions. I re visited a town i lived in for 12 years. The driver set off in the opposite direction i needed to go in. I was a mini cab driver in Manchester, picked up a passenger going to the train station, took 5 minutes. He told me the black cab that took him to the hotel took 15 minutes & cost 4 x my fare. cab in Norfolk passed the same building twice. Thats why i give directions.
Driving a taxi for 3 weeks now one type of people who get in the cab and start telling me I’m not a tourist don’t drive me around I’m a Londoner makes me start hating this job when people think I’m trying to rip them off
7:48 I only do that when I go home from work because our drivers, just like Uber/Didi derivers, mostly use GPS, and GPS prioritizes motorways. Fortunately, or unfortunately: the quickest and most direct route from the call centre where I work to my house is going along without the motorway than going with it. Also: The time difference isn't much, but the cost is somehow a bit less without the motorway. 8:54 Hence why I direct my drivers if I stay south of North Harbour bridge. Granted: I need a guided tour of South and West Auckland. I still can't direct drivers if I go West of New Lynn or South of Penrose. Exemptions never apply for taxi drivers in Auckland, unless if I carpool and get into T3/T4 carpool lanes
Been watching you videos for a while now. Ive Always had a passion for London but always seen the knowledge as a bit too much but after watching you for a while I've just bought my 1st blue book run see where that journey takes me....
Tom. I'm a coach driver and the using Google maps while I'm driving is infuriating. I'm 14 metres long and they've never driven anything as large. Yeah like I'm going to take a shortcut up a small one way street in Central London
shakes victoria please Tom ! half the hotels for example have changed names , you have to keep up with all name changes & new places . you dont get an email from TFL telling you all new places .always a learning day every day ..
There should be a public service announcement of people not to hail or call a cab whilst waiting in a zigzag, they then get pissed off when you drive a bit further to park safely
Great video. Just wanted to note of the 'Hailing' section though, I was recently in central london and it is much harder to see if the taxi is available or not as the light on the roof always looks 'on' I've noticed so you like a plonker when the cab drives past and you then see passengers in the back :D
not clear if taxis are for hire or not. very bad design fault. expensive cabs to buy and they can't get the basics right. At least no more metrocabs - rattled like hell.
@@leylandlynxvlog Metrocabs were handy as 6 seaters - but always sounded like they were falling apart. Really terrible design and build. Sounded worse than a third world taxi. The old Peugeot estate taxi was better than the metro - classic taxi in West Africa years ago....
Hi, the only time use taxis at the moment is when I have to go with my Dad for hospital appointments I live in Southend on whole drivers are good, they usually ask which route I would preffer if there is more than one. I find mobile phone swiping annoying in work meetings or if I'm meeting people in know in my spare time.
I've never pissed off a taxi driver, but I have had a few refuse a fare (which they're really not supposed to do). Picture this, 1am on Old Street, and I'm stone cold sober having just finished running an event. I want to go back to Chiswick, I have 3 bags and a smallish flight case. I had 6 *SIX* taxi drivers refuse the fare because they either said "I'm not going West m8" or "That's too far for me to go". Is it buggery.
Tom, thanks for the tip of Ciao Bella restaurant in one of you're earlier videos. We been there tonight and like it so much, we're going back tomorrow night and off course we went there in a black cab !

Taxi drives in most towns and cities have no requirement to learn any 'knowledge', and in most cases, no driving test either apart from their normal test, maybe ony a year or so before. My experience with taxis generally, is that the standard of driving ranges from uncomfortable to frightening. Rarely is it comfortable. Contast that with the few occasions I have travelled into London, what a pleasure to ride in a black cab (whatever the colour). They know where they're going, (I don't), they make progress smoothly, and I love the little changes of direction, that I could not have done following an A-Z. Worth every penny for the personal chauffer service. Thank you, and all your fellow drivers. I'd never thought about checking the route, either with an A-Z or satnav. Might be interesting to compare, just for amusement, as I'd always defer to the driver's knowledge. I've used various satnavs around areas I know well, they all have limitations, and I can beat their timings with local knowledge, so no way will they be better than a London Taxi Driver.
sometimes passengers know new road works or diversions . In distant Acton, some taxis don't know roads are no entry now - from the A40 Western Avenue after Gypsy Corner - going west - you can't turn into Park View , Court Way, Allan Way or Kathleen Avenue anymore . Some taxis don't know this. If more people used taxis like me , they would all know it.
If I don't know where I'm going, I would sometimes bring it up on google maps, but just as a guide to see how far away I am. I wouldn't dream of telling the driver they're going the wrong way unless it's really clear they are.
You should do one on issues from a passengers viewpoint: 1. Drivers spending entire journey on the phone. 2. Bad drivers (I had one who did a u-turn and mounted the pavement) 3. Drivers who answer your questions but you can’t hear them. 4. Drivers who stop 100m short of my destination because they can turn left which is quicker for them. Anyone got others?
Your number 4 one is similar to one I hate with Uber drivers - stopping 100m from where I'm standing, I've seen so many just stop in the middle of the road and block traffic but for me they want me to walk? I stayed were I ordered the vehicle from and let him cancel it. You're driving - it takes no physical effort to stop where I am or double back if someone was following too close, rather than expect me to walk to you - if I wanted to walk I'd have taken the bus.
Being hailed by someone standing on a crossing is a tough one to deal with. They seem to think you’re mad if you point to the safe place after the crossing .
Hi Tom Hate to say tho twice in past few weeks I’ve jumped in a cab from Charing x to Little Venice and both times the cab has gone all the way down to embankment along to Chelsea bridge and working the way up. This can only be to extract cash
@@simonjohnson8018 No reason to lie and I’m a huge fan of cabbies and almost never use any other form of taxi. As a publican I do hear lots of stories from tourists that do seem to be seen as easy ‘targets’ you have to also say when things aren’t always great by the ppl on the job - just like my fellow publicans who sadly sometimes rip of guests - which hurts the greater food and trust in the rest of us. Hope you have a great day

My pet hate is all passengers using one door and sliding across back seat also as a private hire when I get a hack driver to the airport and he cracks he's a real taxi driver yet he calls us for a cheaper taxi
The second one I can agree with, if he feels like that he should get a "real taxi" and pay the premium. But the other one unless you open the door that faces traffic to ensure people don't get hit getting in or out it is better if they use the nearside door and slide along.
9:17 I work at railway stations and the number of times I’ve heard the rebuttal of “But Google says” is honestly ridiculous. It is my job to know what I’m saying.
People that walk up to my cab at a rank , then start looking in their phone at your window for the address , even though they travelled down on a train for 2hrs they think at your window is the best time too look up the address , meanwhile 4 cabs behind you have loaded up & taken off , and then you find out where they want is just across the road.....
Some people are scared to make an exhibition of themselves when hailing a cab. Having been a hitch hiker for years I can't think of anything easier than making a hand gesture resulting in a sure fire trip to the required destination.
I met some taxi drivers that won't shut up. Like, mate, leave me alone I don't wanna talk to you. Most are chill, but sometimes I get the odd one that never stops asking questions. It's very annoying. I'm anti-social.
I haggled the meter the other day - from £43 down to £40. The driver made a mistake at the end which had lengthened the route. Honestly - I thought he’d knock some money off himself. He agreed straight away.
Tom not all London taxi driver are equal. It was my first time in London totally lost. I was on Baker Street and ask the taxi driver to take me to the Z hotel soho and he didn't know it. I had to open up Google and show him the route.
You ought to try picking up a passenger who has just been to the Pets At Home and has a tub of bird seed. Bird seed tub opened up all over the floor after falling from the seat. Passenger blamed me citing my driving. Needless to say it won't happen again.
I once told a taxi driver about the 8:30 train I was hoping to get while getting in a cab at 8:35... he was all defensive at first until I said oh well I’ll catch the next one. I didn’t mean to sound like I wanted the cabbie to time travel (or break the speed limit) 😂 It was more of a comment about my poor time management skills than anything, luckily I’m a tourist in London and didn’t have anything I needed to get too (although if I did I’d have planned my time better).
On the other hand for #1 - sometimes i'm up for a chat but I hate it when cabbies try to force a conversation when I just want to sit back and relax. Oh and with Haggling. I never do it unless it's the rare occasion i'm going outside the city. What I despise though here in Cardiff is a lot of drivers in town after nights out try and haggle with you as a passenger. Extracting cash out of you up front and then "forget" to turn on the meter, hoping you'll conceed to just let them keep that £20 or whatever. Which has pushed me to pretty much exclusively using Uber now. I know what it's going to cost, no surprises, and the drivers are professional and never try anything unscrupulous.
drugs will do that mate i would not take you 50 feet with out money up front what gives you the right to get into a cab pissed drunk and your the boss ?? get in a cab in ausie ill put your arse out the door ... fool
The reason for that one is the drunk night out passengers are known to avoid paying the fare, and just get out and run when they are close to their address, so it's to protect the driver for wasting their time and not getting paid.
Only taken a cab once in London. From (i dont know) shopping area to Apex hotel London city. Was some traffic, taxi driver was rude and pissed off because of the traffic. An ambulance came in between the lanes and he tailgated it almost crashing in a van that tried to stop him from over/undertaking in the middle of the lanes. When we stoped at the hotel and paid we had to listen to him complaining about our choice of hotel and area. Really unpleasant experience. After that we only take the tube.😂 So some cab drivers has some work to do about them selves as well

2 questions Tom. Do you have to pay a taxi fare if the driver doesn't put the meter on are you legally allowed to refuse to pay? Also do you expect tips and how often do you get tips?
It's a fine ballance but I have alot of respect for cabbies, although one was pissed off my friend I was with was a wheelchair user and just drove off rather than taking our job earlier in the week.
I usually have to direct Sydney taxi drivers, not because I want to, but because they never seem to know how to get where I want to go. London taxis are nice, as all the drivers know how to get everywhere 🙂
In Korea I rarely have to hail because I use an app but when I do I have to put my hand down and not up. I think it's the same in Japan but their taxis are way too expensive.
This is why Uber has done as well as it has. Shows the passengers the price and the route. The driver then follows the same route shown on the app which the passenger can see. TFL and many other councils have not bothered to change the system yet happily take yearly fees from drivers. Council is to blame.
@tomthetaxidriver - love following your video journey but one question for you......... speaking as an ex Glasgow Black Hack owner/driver, it was an unwritten "rule" that we never charged for people taking their kids to YorkHill Sick Childrens Hospital, does the same exist in London?
I was offered a fixed price at Kings Cross station taxi rank to Acton - I have never asked for a fixed price in my life. I accepted the fixed price offered, On arriving at my destination, the cabbie asked for more. I just paid the fixed price , and no tip.I always tip. Very wrong of the cabbie. Should have reported him. If you want really offensive taxi drivers, Bristol Temple Meads station is for you ....
@@toxophillus72 Fixed price is fine. Just never change it to a higher price at the end of the journey. This is why people switch to Uber and minicabs. I only used an Uber once, someone else booked it , from a funeral at Mortlake to Kew Green. Should have walked it instead. Mind you - Acton sometimes is the wrong direction for taxis.
I refused to take a girl last week, she was intoxicated. Her boy mate came to the window to understand what was happening, I told him, she was not gonna get in my taxi. He said: "Even now with the advent of Uber you guys still refuse fares?" (Passive aggressive) I showed him the money, he laughed and told me I'm absolute toilet. Yes, there are a few people that don't respect us as human beings. They just want some slave labour to take them from a to b.
The one you won't get in a txt taxi is the passenger that tells you "you're alright my side driver" like you'll blindly take a drunk strangers opinion to help you drive. 😅
If the customer tells you how to get where they want to get to, aren't you supposed to just follow directions (if legally possible)? I mean, they can't complain about the route later if it is them that chose it. My experience with London taxis is limited, and I don't know my way around London all that well. But with Berlin taxis, on occasion I had to tell the driver that whatever they were doing was totally wrong, and fix it, or I never would have made it home. Most Berlin cabbies are just fine. but some are just a bit dense, or they don't listen to where I want to go. There are three streets of the same name in Berlin, and I (knowing that) provide either the post code or the name of the neighbourhood so it's clear which one I want, but some drivers just don't listen.
You seem a great driver and I'd want to have a guy like you every fare. However these are the things taxi drivers do that annoy me (I'm from Liverpool so this might not happen in London) 1. Ask me for directions or the postcode. I hate this. If it's late at night and Im going to a mates for drinks/a party etc I will not know how to get there. I may not know the postcode either. I know it's 53 Hartington Road in Walton and that's it. Ive had drivers make me find the postcode before starting or ask me how to get there. Not my job. 2. Not have change/take card and demand I have change. I get it if I'm giving a £50 note for a £3 fare but I have had taxis get upset with me because Ive tried to pay a £9.20 fare with a £20 note. I also find cash only taxi drivers annoying. I have money to pay on card I do not want to have to go the cash machine. Private Hire Companies are very bad for this. 3. Refuse to take me because my destination is not in the direction they want to go. Where are you going? Bootle. Sorry Im only doing fares in South Liverpool cos I'm going home soon. This is the reason I stooped supporting cabbies and downloaded uber.
What about the passenger's that say " oh he should have turned right there" thinking the driver can't hear then you have to correct the passenger as they don't know the road layout as no vehicle is allowed to turn at the said junction, I've had the mother and child's picnic in the back then letting them know what a mess they've made and passenger's asking for some random postcode 😂 and then the ones that want to put their cases in the boot of a txe or the one's wanting to sit in the front of a txe where there is no seat or even people on the street trying to get in the cab when there is already passengers inside, some of the public are unbelievable
I watched the rest. I don't think I've done any of the things mentioned, at least I hope not. One thing I would mention is that if you've had problems with tourists, it might be that they assume London taxi drivers are the same as those in other countries. I will never take a cab in LA for instance and will never take one in Amsterdam ever again.
Black cab drivers in Manchester are giving fixed prices on a W/end night, money up front, going half a mile then demanding more money. The outskirts of central M-cr are scary places so they pay. Write their badge No in your phone & photograph the driver.

Dealing with the general public isnt easy. Fair play

It's good they did that, but it is illegal for Black cabs to tout for hire, and the revenue protection at TFL can prosecute.
Do you ever get people who just say "Here's £10. Just drive anywhere."? I'm thinking bored people and sightseers do this, as I knew a school pal who just enjoyed riding in taxis and had a lot of money to waste who did this.
I once tried that but the cabbie didn't want to take me, I wanted to ride in a cab and had some time to kill and a tenner to spend.
If he doesn't know what an inhaler is he needs to get educated.
Another brilliant video Tom. Explains exactly the most irritating things about driving a taxi in London.
Just out of curiosity, have you ever kicked a passenger out of your cab? And what was the reason?
I stopped for a couple in the rain one night and the guy was holding a pint beer glass half full, I said "ok but you can't bring the beer in the cab" He said okay and we drove off, I then look in my mirror and he was drinking the beer so I pulled over and asked them to get out, which they did. He called me a few names but I won't be disrespected in such an obvious way.
Waterloo to Euston
A few years ago we had booked and paid for a train up north to collect a new (to us car) the person selling phoned us in the morning to say the car's clutch has gone ad will be fixed on the Monday. "Hears £40, keep the change!"
I will never use an Uber.
Next time you're American lol
next time try Canadian - Canada only invades Normandy beaches....
I have had them all. One off the worst is people hailing you in heavy traffic and using a lot of time to get in the car.
And then moaning about the same traffic
I had a fare just this morning going to Gatwick to hurry up a bit I waited 15 min for him grrr I needed this video nice work Tom
Had that twice , waited like 10 minutes for them only to be told to hurry up
I was recently quoted approx £30 for a fare. Meter came up at £27, guess what, I gave him £30. No skin off my back. It was late at night.
I got quoted £50 once. Meter came up £30. He wanted to fix the price rather than use the meter, cause it was 4am, Piccadilly Circus, and we have Northern accents.
@@mattg5878why would he put meter on after fare fixed
Wow you gave him £3. What a guy. If you gave him £40 . It would have put you in a better light.
@@alexnaismith9979 You tip at 37%????

@@dalek3086 I loved riding in Metrocabs, I liked the shape and the association with MCW buses (being a bus enthusiast).
Get in the cab and then tell them where you are going.
I love spotting the background of your vids ... nice to see Park Road in this one
Had a cabbie last week who said the knowledge should be scrapped - was well surprised.
Tom, thanks for the tip of Ciao Bella restaurant in one of you're earlier videos.
We been there tonight and like it so much, we're going back tomorrow night and off course we went there in a black cab !

Leaving the paper for the next punter used to be a thing on the tube 😂
As a cab driver I love it when customers not ask me any questions.
You should do one on issues from a passengers viewpoint:
1. Drivers spending entire journey on the phone.
2. Bad drivers (I had one who did a u-turn and mounted the pavement)
3. Drivers who answer your questions but you can’t hear them.
4. Drivers who stop 100m short of my destination because they can turn left which is quicker for them.
Anyone got others?
Refusing wheelchair users,
Your number 4 one is similar to one I hate with Uber drivers - stopping 100m from where I'm standing, I've seen so many just stop in the middle of the road and block traffic but for me they want me to walk? I stayed were I ordered the vehicle from and let him cancel it. You're driving - it takes no physical effort to stop where I am or double back if someone was following too close, rather than expect me to walk to you - if I wanted to walk I'd have taken the bus.
Being hailed by someone standing on a crossing is a tough one to deal with. They seem to think you’re mad if you point to the safe place after the crossing .
I like reading a left over newspaper. Maybe you should have adopted his idea of a mobile library :)
Hi Tom
Hate to say tho twice in past few weeks I’ve jumped in a cab from Charing x to Little Venice and both times the cab has gone all the way down to embankment along to Chelsea bridge and working the way up. This can only be to extract cash
I don't believe that.

No reason to lie and I’m a huge fan of cabbies and almost never use any other form of taxi. As a publican I do hear lots of stories from tourists that do seem to be seen as easy ‘targets’ you have to also say when things aren’t always great by the ppl on the job - just like my fellow publicans who sadly sometimes rip of guests - which hurts the greater food and trust in the rest of us. Hope you have a great day
Your cab is beautiful, and your videos are excellent
Ever since I’ve started driving a Cab l’ve always said to myself ‘Mark don’t worry about it you’re only gonna meet them once’
What if you meet them again though

Oh yes, Tom, all of them have happened to me in 8 years of driving a cab.
Spot on Tom , I love it when they tell me the route
Sooooo true about people who are mega late as a cabbie had this 1000x. Pull out the stops get them there, no tip not even a fair play mate!!!
✌️❤️
I was in a minicab (in Newport) who definitely ignored speed limits so I could get to the garage before it closed to pick my car up.
When I drove if people just scratch their nose, I would pull over and see if they needed a cab lol
Sounds like most southerner tbf
I haggled the meter the other day - from £43 down to £40. The driver made a mistake at the end which had lengthened the route. Honestly - I thought he’d knock some money off himself. He agreed straight away.
That’s very interesting - the idea of going to dinner with someone because you want to be with them. I go to dinner because I’m hungry.😂
Tom not all London taxi driver are equal. It was my first time in London totally lost. I was on Baker Street and ask the taxi driver to take me to the Z hotel soho and he didn't know it. I had to open up Google and show him the route.
Was it a black cab?
Not knowing a particular hotel is not uncommon, not knowing the street when you have told him on what street the hotel is, is uncommon.
I didn’t mean to sound like I wanted the cabbie to time travel (or break the speed limit) 😂
It was more of a comment about my poor time management skills than anything, luckily I’m a tourist in London and didn’t have anything I needed to get too (although if I did I’d have planned my time better).
There's an old saying
"The best way to catch a train is too miss the one before"
Well done 👏🏻
In New York, attacking a taxi driver is punished by 25 years in prison.
I know what it's going to cost, no surprises, and the drivers are professional and never try anything unscrupulous.
drugs will do that mate i would not take you 50 feet with out money up front what gives you the right to get into a cab pissed drunk and your the boss ?? get in a cab in ausie ill put your arse out the door ... fool
In London there shite
After that we only take the tube.😂
So some cab drivers has some work to do about them selves as well

Always love your videos Tom! Have a great day fella.
Hailing a taxi as national rail say for request stops “make your intent clear”
2 questions Tom. Do you have to pay a taxi fare if the driver doesn't put the meter on are you legally allowed to refuse to pay? Also do you expect tips and how often do you get tips?
I get all the points except the newspaper. I love finding a newspaper in a taxi or train. I wouldn’t dream of leaving actual rubbish anywhere.
Great video and content. Quality.
100% right on the same questions by the punters busy driver what time you working till driver. Be lucky pal.
The human sat nav p****d me off.
Genuinely blows my miond that someone would use google like in the back of a cab
@tomthetaxidriver - love following your video journey but one question for you......... speaking as an ex Glasgow Black Hack owner/driver, it was an unwritten "rule" that we never charged for people taking their kids to YorkHill Sick Childrens Hospital, does the same exist in London?
😂😂😂😂😂
In my 25 years driving a cab down here in Spain, I've had all that and more 🤷♂️
I was offered a fixed price at Kings Cross station taxi rank to Acton - I have never asked for a fixed price in my life. I accepted the fixed price offered,
On arriving at my destination, the cabbie asked for more. I just paid the fixed price , and no tip.I always tip.
Very wrong of the cabbie. Should have reported him.
If you want really offensive taxi drivers, Bristol Temple Meads station is for you ....
I occasionally offered a fixed price when I was going home, if it was in the right direction as an encouragement, usually less than the meter.
He said: "Even now with the advent of Uber you guys still refuse fares?" (Passive aggressive)
I showed him the money, he laughed and told me I'm absolute toilet.

good points. most of these seem like common human decency stuff that i thought everyone knew but i guess not
Something I've possibly missed but why are they called Hackney cabs?
The one you won't get in a txt taxi is the passenger that tells you "you're alright my side driver" like you'll blindly take a drunk strangers opinion to help you drive. 😅
Excellent! Shared! 👍🏾
However these are the things taxi drivers do that annoy me (I'm from Liverpool so this might not happen in London)
OK, I'm watching this semi-live and just heard the first point. I always expect the taxi driver, especially a London driver, to talk to me first!
