Mel your advice about fitting the max air fan is totally wrong. The whole point of the holes not lining up is to pull the fan down onto the seal tightly when you do them up. Therefore creating a weatherproof seal. If you do it the way you’ve done it the fan is just basically resting on top of the rubber seal. The trick to fitting them is to gently push down on the corner you are fitting and you will just manage to line up the holes. Then you put the screw in on a slight angle then as you tighten the screw it will pull itself in straight. Love the channel by the way and have watched you from the beginning I am very jealous of your Vario.
Exactly right, if it’s not pulled down tight it will leak for sure.
Great video. I am an American who watched and loved the entire series of “The Detectorist”! Hell yes, I’ll watch you swinging your metal detector. It boggles the mind how much history is buried in British soil.
Oh thank you that’s very kind of you to say 👍🤓👍
Anks mel your a pleasure to watch and thanks for passing your knowledge on
Thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated 👍
Don’t forget to push back down before tightening screws as they have got to in low position to be pulled down into seal enough other wise they do leak as I found out
Another great job you probably already know but you can get plastic caps for those roofing screws in various different colours
Really!! Thanks 🙏
As a fellow detectorist, would love to see more metal detecting videos on the channel. Really enjoyed the ones at the beach a while back.
Thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated 👍🤓👍
Yeah I bet you did
Mel, keep on cooking it's great to see somebody doing something different then keep on building 👍👍👍🏴🏴
Thank you, I will 👍🤓👍
Used the butyl mastic tape to seal my fan since your previous recommendations. It had been fitted using tube sealant and it leaked. Worked a treat, absolutely leak free. Nice use of those roofing screws too. A great tip.
I’m glad it worked for you 👍🤓👍
Quality work Mell. Things like the tip on raising the fasteners really help
Great job Mel
Thank you 🙏
Keep metal detecting on this channel, I also metal detect ... brilliant
Thanks, will do! Happy hunting 👍🤓👍
According to my sister the matt side of the foil absorbs heat and the shiny side reflects heat so I would assume you have the matt side out for cooking the shiny side to protect things from burning
It doesn't make any difference, there's one shiny side and one Matt one due to the way it's made
Yeah it’s a myth
Mel you legend!! Could have used some advice on what signals to dig at the weekend…dug a thousand holes and found 3 nails 😂😂
That vario is gonna be a rolling mansion!! Your attention to detail is amazing man!
Keep up the good work mate 😎🤙
Happy hunting 😂🤣😂👍
As an armchair builder....I have always thought you might want to keep the van roof free to maximise PV panel area. You still need ventilation and I thought you could fit a schottky diode to isolate the normal van HVAC fan from the rest of the "ignition" circuit so you could run it to ventilate a stationery van. If that isn't enough - could you fit a MAXXfan on the vertical surface on one of the rear doors ?
Thanks for the tips!
Why muck a round with diesel for cooking when you have all these power packs? Why not have a couple of inverters plates! Thought you would have used that hole for an observation dome?
Could have done with your video yesterday as I have just fitted my Maxxfan Air and it was a real pain trying to get the screws to line up when installing the fan. Great tip.
Great job. In answer to your question I think you should keep everything on the one channel
Thank you 🙏
Mel, when you said "Let's see if we can find a Troll Of The Week", then you read out my comment; at first I thought "Oh no, I'm the troll of the week! What did i write??" 🤣 But that wasn't the case. 😅
Nice to hear you talking to me on your video. 😁
GDayChrissy my absolute pleasure its always lovely to hear from you 👍😎👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks Mel 😊
Hello Mel: Hey thank you for you given shared time showing of how to install a Max Air Fan Delux to a Mercedes Vario, I've yet to fit my own so your video my friend will proof very helpful, I also liked the type of bolts you've used, which I will use too. However have you thought about putting some Weather Nut Protection caps on the bolt heads as this will finish it of nicely and prevent them going rusty. Steve from Manchester.
I am also looking forward to seeing you begin insulating the inside of your Vario
I don't actually think it matters which way the foil goes but in my mind shiny side out reflects heat. P.s I no sod all about foil. Keep up the great work Mel 👍🏼
Fair enough!🤣🤣🤪🤓👍
I read somewhere that the difference between the shiny and the matt side is that one side is shiny.
Yes, it doesn't matter which side you have which way. The reason the 2 sides are different is because of how they make it. I read they put 2 sheets through together at the same time. One side was against the rollers the other side was against the other sheet.
Cheers Mel. Simple tip but valuable
Hi Mel. Another fab and very informative video as per usual. Metal detecting! Yes definitely. Either separately or as part of your campervan videos why not mix and match. I do both camper van and detecting. Not as much as I'd like as I'm also a very keen photographer as well. Just not enough hours in the day.
Looking forward to the next video.
Martin.
Thank you ☺️
Keep it together Mel 👏
So Mel... Do you already know what the total height of the Vario is now? As the Maxxfan cover is higher than your solar panels in the closed position.
You should put that height on a sticker on the dashboard, so you won't forget it while driving.
That’s a great idea 👍🤓👍
Smashing job there Mel
Great video mate as far as the foil goes it really doesn’t matter it is the same material all the way through one side is shiny because of how it comes off the roller
Thanks for the info
Great job Mel 👏 👍
Great vlog
Thank you!! 😊
Wow! That'sabout one great tip a minute on this episode, Mel. Great content, mate. Thanks a lot. Will save me and many others hours.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi there, loved the cooking slot and the " Farmed Fish " info ... bet you lose that Tiny remote ... 😅😂🤣👍
Thank Mel working hard buddy , always want to reach in and help you , I’m working on my van right now (not living in it) but sometimes it’s overwhelming all the little things. Your so lucky you got that chicken shed ,I’m on the drive ,and slave to the lovely Welsh rain 😂 well done good luck 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢
TOP TIP wish I know that at the time .lol lesson learned THANKS M8
No worries
Great stuff Mel,
I got a MB 711D Grenzland. 1990mod.Got 2 MaxxFan on it Wish ive new that. Got them fitted with som force. 😊Erik. Norway.
And Heidi and her 2 little doggiis i use to travel vith love them. ❤
Saw videos on diesel cooktops. People were not excited. Loud, bad heat distribution and a lot of stuff hanging underneath the van.
I am not sure anymore if they also had high electricity consumption
I’m working on a video now and I have to say I’m very excited about it
There’s a company in Scotland that convert campers, and they are very professional. They are Jerba Campervans abd they use and fit Wallas diesel cook top/heater units. Shown in some of their RUclips videos.
First time actually watching a max air fan being fitted but was a bit disappointed at the end that only 4 Phillips screws hold it on,questioning if anyone has ever had one stolen or if any vans have been broken into through the fan as it seems it could be removed in less than a minute with a simple screw driver!! For the cost of 4 screws maybe worth using some torx head screws or similar, would have thought a big company like them would have added them instead of cheaping out!
Ive got a talking voice controlled fan from amazon cost about £250 but its brilliant and if it rains it closes itself and if I start driving with it open I can just shout lid closed and hey presto
Brilliant
Love your cooking content mel keep it up👌👌👌👌
Thank you, I will
Very interesting video bud. Wild salmon all the way. Max fan are very nice. I’m interested when you make your video on a diesel cook top 😊
Vario looking lovely 😊 great little power pack 😊
Thank you buddy 🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld just been watching American couple fitting one. I’m now even more extremely interested 😊
ruclips.net/video/cDmnmVk3SvU/видео.htmlsi=sJtVysBrh9RQoSIj :)
Are you going to put a seal round the next max air fan on the inside? Stop air from coming in and bringing road noise and Sutton back in?
Keep all your endeavours on 1 channel it will be easier to control and save editing 3 or4 extra channels my friend.
Thanks for the tip
Hi Mel thanks for reading my comment from your last video , I just want to say on the food you cooked on your video that i noticed you had a pre prepared salad and be very careful as these are washed in chlorine and citric acid these can over time be very bad for your health , all the best with your build .👍
Just noticed your rwar mud flaps ans how noce they look w9th the merc logo on too. Very smart
Really informative and entertaining Mel but, don't need the long cookery section. Maybe its just me but wouldn't be surprised if lots more viewers feel the same.
Big Fan Small Whirled, Funny Haddock and Therminator. There's a few thumbnail titles you could have used on this outing Mel. But you'd probably have to justify the Fanny Craddock and T-1000 references to your younger viewers, and that doesn't make for good comedy when have to explain your jokes!..... And with that subtle walk on part from your mate, it was a sublime Shopping Channel-esque piece of salesmanship......I bet you'll have helped to shift a few units since! Great video Jasper Usual..... oops!
doesn't matter which side , the shiny side is generated by polishing action of the rollers in the factory during production , the machine rolls 2 layers simultaneously otherwise it will tear in production
As always Mel another fantastic video, Yes eggs are vegetarian , it’s us Vegans that don’t eat eggs… ps wild or farmed salmon have mercury contaminates.
Stay safe , ☯️
Oh wow!😮
Are you a van builder or a chef😊
I’m just a guy who enjoys being free to do whatever he wants 👍🤓🥰
Hi Mel really enjoying your content, have you noticed the new power bank colour, matches your overalls 😂 👍💫🐾
Yes I have 😂👍🍻
"°It will Never Leak !!!! Defo juat Jinxed your self Haha
The FDA is the US Food & Drug Administration, so nothing to do with us here in the UK.
My van is that close to the roof beams of my garage where i built/store it 😂, I've fitted air suspension so i can lower it when putting it away.
Hi Mel, just a thought, when you fitted the fan unit, it has an Oring type seal in the channel, would it have been better to run a bead of Sicaflex as well
Combine your metal detecting with van life buddy, keep it simple, i suspect folks wont search your other adventures so combine everything in 1 package,...
Thank you for taking the time to comment really appreciate your help 👍🤓👍
Yes shiny side👍
Mel the instructions for the max fan do thay not say to lift the clips up to locate the screws in the side ???🎉
Have you fitted it back to front? 🧐 When the fan is in the open position, should the raised section be at the back of the van otherwise it would act like a air scoop if it was left open whilst driving? (Cant tell which way round the van is facing in relation to the fan).
Do you mind me asking what was the vario before you purchased as she looks in good condition
It was a cherry picker hardly any use only done 63000 miles 👍🤓👍
I'm just watching your video in the background I've been watching you for a couple of weeks I just wonder why you just don't temporary lighting balls down in the van instead of purchasing yourself on the cross members
Are you going to just use the mastic tape or will you cover the edges with some Sikaflex (or similar)?
No need to use anything else mastic dose the job
@@BigVanSmallWorld Thanks Mel (and by the way love your videos!). Like you I swear by the mastic. I did use sikaflex just to finish off the edges and shed the water but as you say the mastic does a great job. Mine has survived over 2 years in the very windy and wet, west coast of Scotland, the ultimate torture test!!
Some folks also reckon cooking with foil is not good Mel
as high heat makes the foil leach chemicals as does heat with plastics too ....depends how bothered we are , alloy
being a dementia theory 🤷♂️
Keep the metal detecting and diving on this channel after all your blogs are about you and your life ,plus how will you get to the places you go diving and detecting, mostly by your van I'll bet so everything is linked.Keep up the good work Mel show these youngsters hobbits done
Haha thank you for the positive comment really appreciated 🤓👍🍻
Mel will the Vario actually fit through the main door now you've fitted the Maxair fan
I hope so 🤣👍
Shiny side towards your food mat side out..
Keep it all on one channel Mel. Did you look at the link I sent you?
Hi Mel you have probably already know this but there was a guy taking about m fans and wind noise and he was recommending a rubber seal that you can fit to it to stop a lot of the wind noise hope this info helps it’s about £14 pounds so not to bad all the best Simon
Thank you 🙏
The foil dilemma =anyside?the farmed salmon dilemma =the salmon at a lot of farms are fed with wheat gluten pellets with added nutrients at close to £2000 per tonne?
Did the Grecell Terminator T1000 also sponsor today’s overalls as it’s a good colour match! 😂
Haha yeah
Hi Mel Simon here you have probably already heard about this but just in case you haven’t there was a guy on RUclips talking about maxfans an
Hey Mel I went to purchase a sticker but New Zealand didn't come up as a country option!! We may be down under but we are still on the globe, any suggestions?
Oh Rachel that’s terrible service if you look me up on Facebook Mel Pettifer send me a DM with your address and I’ll gladly send you a sticker 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel just watched your video can I ask where you got the 12v plug because that looks like a better fitting one that I have on my fridge that comes loose tia
I think I cut it off a Bluetti lol 😂
Hi Mel can I ask when fitting your cubic mini how much of the pipe is on the outside as chimney please. Keep up the good work
About 6 inches
Thank you ❤
Good video again Mel......
No joking!
👍
Thanks 👍
Mel HUGHTUBE has a diesel cookertop but he hasn't been on in a while since his wife had a baby.....the size of the cub/grizzly would depend on how much insulation, how much insulation are you using ?? V good of you to give the power pack away to a fellow traveller.🏴
Yeah I seen that video it’s a shame he has stopped filming
Geewizzers me ol rusty gate.. that was totally awsomewells.. lots goin on in every direction.. fabbo .. all but the aluminum foil ..throw that stuf in the bin where it belongs ..(old timers ) ..norsty stuff ..anywhos matey must away .. worlds to save n such n so forth etc etc etc ..😂😂😎😍😁
Brilliant 🤓👍🤣
Mel, please don’t fall in to a lot of the other van builder channels, if we wanted to see cooking we would pick a cooking channel. Been following you from almost the start, stick to the great content you usually upload.
Totally totally agree with you there... Wife cooks and I build. I don't wonna watch food channel in-between a build channel... 👍
Noted!
Mel how was that new power bank you were using on this ?
It’s fantastic 👍
Do like your videos Mel , one question what percentage of power did you use cooking your salmon from you power pack . Cheers
It was at around 70% and 37 % after cooking so plenty 👍
Bill , Thanks Mel for a super quick reply@@BigVanSmallWorld
Keep it all on one channel please
Power pack not to be confused with Grecian 2000
lol 😂
I sat through 40 minutes waiting for the sexy money shot of the Maxxfan installed from underneath....You know a Proper upFan shot, n Nada nothing ziltch. I want my money back.
Bruce gets about 👍 stop promoting power packs coz it’s costing me a fortune 😂
Enjoy your van build series but the thumbnail unnecessarily misleading! Just not needed Mel. Also when using jigsaw: SAFETY GOGGLES!! I've had metal shard in the eye even with regular specs on using a jigsaw. I'll only ever do that the once I can assure you after 8 hrs in A&E.
Put the metal detecting on here Mel.
Thank you I’ll see how it works out in the summer 👍🤓👍
100% would watch you metal detector and dive
Poor Salmon
Where is the bird with the dog
Haha Becky is working but if you miss her she does have her own channel sacred traveller 👍
I’ll be on the channel in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled. Also got a brand new vanlife video going lIVE NOWW❤
Honestly Mel, the cooking segment is not needed.
Jackery 1000 is now £599, down from £1049.
I take it was filmed before Bruce’s van broke down
Oh no really?
Broke down on the motorway new engine required I think
17:43 FDA - Food & Drug Administration - in charge of standards for _American_ food.
Pretty low standards so if something can't even reach that it genuinely is dire!
It doesn't matter what side of the foil that you use
16 bolts holding down the frame and only 4 self tappers needed to secure the big top part , if you lose the top at least you will still have the frame 🤣
Hahaha 🤣
Makes no difference which side of the tinfoil you use, the rolling of the tinfoil at manufacture makes it shiny on 1 side. Got that off QI, so must be true🤓😉
There's no difference which side you use .only difference is the way its rolled out into sheets
I'm not installing any future leaks, thanks anyway
To be honest: The big maxxfan for me is a pice of crap. The instalation process, the absolute oldschool remote, the clunkyness of this whole thing.... absolutely a no go for me. I would recomend a roof window and maybe one or two small maxxfan dome. thats the much better solution, I think.
Yeah I’m no a fan
Ten minutes of cooking footage to skip through....
Am getting to the unsubscribe stage
Either side of the foil can be used to place food on unless you are using bacofoil the non-stick kitchen foil then the food should be placed on the non shiny side this is the side that is coated with a food safe silicon to stop sticking
Dinner is always a laugh.
😴
