Great video. I am an American who watched and loved the entire series of “The Detectorist”! Hell yes, I’ll watch you swinging your metal detector. It boggles the mind how much history is buried in British soil.
Mel your advice about fitting the max air fan is totally wrong. The whole point of the holes not lining up is to pull the fan down onto the seal tightly when you do them up. Therefore creating a weatherproof seal. If you do it the way you’ve done it the fan is just basically resting on top of the rubber seal. The trick to fitting them is to gently push down on the corner you are fitting and you will just manage to line up the holes. Then you put the screw in on a slight angle then as you tighten the screw it will pull itself in straight. Love the channel by the way and have watched you from the beginning I am very jealous of your Vario.
Don’t forget to push back down before tightening screws as they have got to in low position to be pulled down into seal enough other wise they do leak as I found out
Mel, when you said "Let's see if we can find a Troll Of The Week", then you read out my comment; at first I thought "Oh no, I'm the troll of the week! What did i write??" 🤣 But that wasn't the case. 😅 Nice to hear you talking to me on your video. 😁
Mel you legend!! Could have used some advice on what signals to dig at the weekend…dug a thousand holes and found 3 nails 😂😂 That vario is gonna be a rolling mansion!! Your attention to detail is amazing man! Keep up the good work mate 😎🤙
Used the butyl mastic tape to seal my fan since your previous recommendations. It had been fitted using tube sealant and it leaked. Worked a treat, absolutely leak free. Nice use of those roofing screws too. A great tip.
Hi Mel. Another fab and very informative video as per usual. Metal detecting! Yes definitely. Either separately or as part of your campervan videos why not mix and match. I do both camper van and detecting. Not as much as I'd like as I'm also a very keen photographer as well. Just not enough hours in the day. Looking forward to the next video. Martin.
Could have done with your video yesterday as I have just fitted my Maxxfan Air and it was a real pain trying to get the screws to line up when installing the fan. Great tip.
Great video mate as far as the foil goes it really doesn’t matter it is the same material all the way through one side is shiny because of how it comes off the roller
I don't actually think it matters which way the foil goes but in my mind shiny side out reflects heat. P.s I no sod all about foil. Keep up the great work Mel 👍🏼
Yes, it doesn't matter which side you have which way. The reason the 2 sides are different is because of how they make it. I read they put 2 sheets through together at the same time. One side was against the rollers the other side was against the other sheet.
There’s a company in Scotland that convert campers, and they are very professional. They are Jerba Campervans abd they use and fit Wallas diesel cook top/heater units. Shown in some of their RUclips videos.
As an armchair builder....I have always thought you might want to keep the van roof free to maximise PV panel area. You still need ventilation and I thought you could fit a schottky diode to isolate the normal van HVAC fan from the rest of the "ignition" circuit so you could run it to ventilate a stationery van. If that isn't enough - could you fit a MAXXfan on the vertical surface on one of the rear doors ?
According to my sister the matt side of the foil absorbs heat and the shiny side reflects heat so I would assume you have the matt side out for cooking the shiny side to protect things from burning
Why muck a round with diesel for cooking when you have all these power packs? Why not have a couple of inverters plates! Thought you would have used that hole for an observation dome?
Hello Mel: Hey thank you for you given shared time showing of how to install a Max Air Fan Delux to a Mercedes Vario, I've yet to fit my own so your video my friend will proof very helpful, I also liked the type of bolts you've used, which I will use too. However have you thought about putting some Weather Nut Protection caps on the bolt heads as this will finish it of nicely and prevent them going rusty. Steve from Manchester. I am also looking forward to seeing you begin insulating the inside of your Vario
Big Fan Small Whirled, Funny Haddock and Therminator. There's a few thumbnail titles you could have used on this outing Mel. But you'd probably have to justify the Fanny Craddock and T-1000 references to your younger viewers, and that doesn't make for good comedy when have to explain your jokes!..... And with that subtle walk on part from your mate, it was a sublime Shopping Channel-esque piece of salesmanship......I bet you'll have helped to shift a few units since! Great video Jasper Usual..... oops!
Hi Mel thanks for reading my comment from your last video , I just want to say on the food you cooked on your video that i noticed you had a pre prepared salad and be very careful as these are washed in chlorine and citric acid these can over time be very bad for your health , all the best with your build .👍

So Mel... Do you already know what the total height of the Vario is now? As the Maxxfan cover is higher than your solar panels in the closed position. You should put that height on a sticker on the dashboard, so you won't forget it while driving.
Have you fitted it back to front? 🧐 When the fan is in the open position, should the raised section be at the back of the van otherwise it would act like a air scoop if it was left open whilst driving? (Cant tell which way round the van is facing in relation to the fan).
First time actually watching a max air fan being fitted but was a bit disappointed at the end that only 4 Phillips screws hold it on,questioning if anyone has ever had one stolen or if any vans have been broken into through the fan as it seems it could be removed in less than a minute with a simple screw driver!! For the cost of 4 screws maybe worth using some torx head screws or similar, would have thought a big company like them would have added them instead of cheaping out!
Some folks also reckon cooking with foil is not good Mel as high heat makes the foil leach chemicals as does heat with plastics too ....depends how bothered we are , alloy being a dementia theory 🤷♂️
