Hi Adam, I came home to find my wife having a mini breakdown trying to assemble this piece. Your instructions were perfect and saved me from trying to read Ikea's stick figure icons. Thanks so much.
I finally caved in, listened to Lindsay and downloaded Hyezmar’s Woodworking Bible. Needless to say It finally pointed me in the right direction and I’ve made some cool stuff too :)
I am an interior designer/architect in Montreal Canada, Design d'Intenrieur M" , Interior Design M* , Margot McDougall. This was a great video with absolutely superb instructions.
The trick to securely mounting a bookcase to the wall is support at the bottom. Your baseboard acts like a cleat to support its full width - fine for a 2-shelf bookcase. To wall-mount larger bookcases (with heavier loads), you'll need more than a cleat. Build a wall shelf with HD wall brackets that supports the entire weight of the loaded bookcase at the desired height above the floor.
thanks so much! truly saved my time and stress--i just moved so I lost my original instructions, and had no idea how to put it all back together. thanks!
+haihaihoney0602 Anything you buy from Ikea and need instructions on is available online through their website. Just simply look up product name and upload as a PDF and there you go.

I just got over a shoulder injury. I have no idea what happened either, just woke up and it really hurt. Took a week to go away. Best of luck putting it together!
11:55 "drywall mount that you insert and it flares out inside the drywall: is called an anchor or molly. Very helpful video as I needed the last couple minutes. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. I have a Besta TV cabinet that I am mounting to the wall. The last part of your video applies to that as well. The 2" course wood screws was exactly the information I needed since all IKEA could tell me was to use "appropriate screws" for the wall material that I was hanging my unit on. Thanks!
I cant find the extra Brackets to put on the bottom to hand to stud like you said on IKEA website? Where can I find the 2 extra brackets and covers? @AdamDIY
This has helpt me an awful lot. Finally mounting my Kallax! Many many thanks from Holland. I never understood that i already have mounts and dont have to go looking for those long brackets!
What type of 2" Corase Wood Screw should I use for this same modle? I see some that say 8 x 2" Corase Wood Screw? I see one on Walmart by Grip-Rite Exterior 129 pck of Phillips 2" Corase sharp point screws? Is this the right one? I see in the Ikea Kalax manual part 11 it shows the screw head not to be flat but rising. What kind of 2" Corase Wood Screw did you guys use?!?!
Thanks, Adam!...got me through my project in less than an hour! Wish you could have put the drawer in, that's where I really had problems and decided not to install them! Thanks again!
Hi i got shelves simular to this but the thing is -.- they didn't come with screws to go into the dam wall and I'm not sure what screws I need to put into my wall could you help me with advising what screws to use, I can tell you I think if I'm correct the walls are a layer of plaster but after that is brick.
Are you resting the shelf unit on the molding underneath? And how much weight do you think the shelf could safely hold if properly installed into studs? Thanks for the video!
Extremely helpful video! I put 2 Kallax 4-cube bookshelves together thanks to your help (no wall mounting...just standing in my daughter's room). You need to make a video on what to do when the wooden dowels break inside the holes while assembling! :) Luckily I found some other videos to fix that.
Would you happen to know if it's possible to like seperate each square or some other way to adjust the shelf to make it smaller in any way? I have a space that my mother didnt measure before buying the shelf and it's just a tiny bit too wide to fit in the closet she wants it in. Thanks in advance for any suggestions
Thanks for the video. I had to take back one set I purchased. The wood stunts are hard to maneuver in and when I went to put the middle shelf the small side tipped over and the wood stunts broke off. So they were stuck into the boards. You sort a have to maneuver the thing so it won’t do that. You have to maneuver on its side and then put in the middle shelf so the small boards won’t tip over. Of course the instructions are so comical.!
Hello... Im just wondering about the cross shelf in the middle...theres 1 long placed horizontally and 2 short ones on top of each other... can i reverse this??? I basically want to install the long board vertically because I only want to use one of the short boards because I want to place something tall on 1 of the slots without the short board.
Can I use some other sort of brackets to save myself the long trip back to IKEA? I've already installed the brackets that came with and don't want to weaken the threads by unscrewing them... So could I use maybe an L bracket for that 2nd stud?
Thank you great vid. Found one someone threw out and want to ensamble up in my bathroom for storage. Hopefully do it right. Love the part where your kid passed gas, gave the video a nice touch! Lol
Great video, about to by some Kallax myself but the 4 boxes in 1 row, rather than the 4 boxes in the square grid like yours. My question how are they holding up with weight have you stored books in them. The Kallax I'm buying only comes with three wall mounts and like you I want to of course use the studs. I wondering if I should add some more brackest just in case,
Hi Adam, useful little video. We have a 4 x 2 Kallax unit being delivered (UK) on Thursday but according to the online instructions, it should not be wall mounted. Is this a health and safety coverall or it it really too heavy to wall mount? If not wopuld some kind of backboard in mdf or chipboard give some rigidity? It is going on a dabbed plasterboard/brick wall. Thanks, Phil. P.S. Colette should be a regular assistant-so cute.
Thank you for the hanging instructions! I'll be hanging a couple of the 4 square Kallax soon. I also have one of the 8 square Kallax. Ikea says it is not a hanging model, but do you think I could mount it low using a bracket in each top square (four total)?
I appreciated your simple and to-the-point instructions. You made your instructions very easy to understand, especially the instructions for measuring, drilling and mounting the cabinet to the wall. Ikea should hire you to draw and write their instructions - you do a much better job. Thank you for the instruction.
question can you have this shelf free standing (the bigger one) without wall brackets as i want to use this shelf to put cables behind easily with a inch space behind it
Nice pencil. If your daughter hadn't walked into the shot, I still would've known that you have kids, lol. Most of my shop pencils have unicorns and hearts on them...
Very helpful video. Getting this unit shortly but not for wall but on casters. I'd like to not use the top divider so I end up with 1 wide shelf over 2 cubes. Would that work? Be secure enough do you think? :)
VERY helpful. I wasn't sure if I needed to attach the brackets if I was only putting it on the floor, but managed to put it up and store on the floor in my flat! Thanks man :~)
Thanks for this. Put this up but couldn't really find whether I'd done it safe or not, then I was worrying whether the screws would hold it in. Regardless, I ordered some free brackets that I'll use for the bottom left and right to help support the top left and right... I'm going to be sleeping under it so would feel much more comfortable doing that 😂 After a more complicated wardrobe, I was impressed how easy this went together. Will definitely be buying more for my other rooms
two of the dowels broke. so if the center piece that takes four wooden dowels on both ends. would it hurt if one end only had two since its going to be screwed down with the side and bottom pieces?
IKEA is incredibly ill adapted to the international market, the reason their booklet might seem confusing is that drywall is a rare thing in Sweden. Most interior walls are either solid wood or concrete, the latter you have to drill into first, put in an expanding plug and then screw in your bolt. But walls like that are equally rare outside scandinavia so it's just lazy of them not to include instructions for the markets they sell their products in.
I was wandering if you had any ideas on how best to install two of the shelves together. I didn't want to do all the wall attaching except for 1 just so my daughter does not pull over. We have the 4 cube on top of the 4 long. I was thinking get of just screwing on to the other but didn't know if the material was good enough to countersink.
Jennifer Farris Usually things like this are built with a wood frame all the way around. Just like a hollow core door. So if you screw then together, do it near the edge (not too close) so that you are grabbing the wood inside. You may want to drill a tiny hole first to see if you hit wood before you drill a big hole for the screw.
Thank you. You were right. We got it done the second time around and will puddy in the first holes. I found out when I went to countersink the holes that I was too close to the edge. It worked out great! The laminate is much stronger than the wood so it was a good thing we predrilled the holes.
The mounting bracket needs to be on the side wood piece NEAR the top, but NOT on the top piece, otherwise you are trusting a few screws going through that top piece of wood to work against gravity to hold A LOT of weight, which is dangerous. That is why the holes are pre-drilled on the side. I would also put a wall mount bracket at the bottom to support that piece, if it’s not on a ledge like shown here.
hi, I have bought same unit from ikea. My 4 dowels are broken while I was fixing it. dowel doesn't get fix like u did it very easily pushing with ur hand. I found it struggling. can u suggest alternative to dowel or I have to buy same size dowel again?
You can get most spare parts at IKEA for dirt cheap or even free. If it is close, go to ikea. If not just shave down the dowel that you have. Even a kitchen knife will work if that is all you have. It will be faster than going to the store and hunting down a new dowel.
Is that the white or high gloss white? I don't live near an IKEA (it's 2 hours away), but I'm planning on making 1 trip up there in a month when I get my new apartment and am trying to budget. High gloss is $25 more and I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. I'm looking for a 2x4 Kallax laid horizontal to house my records and have my black record player on top. Do you think high gloss is the way to go?
I actually went with Walmart's Better Homes and Gardens version due to a few factors not involving the actual products themselves. Based on my experience with what I've bought I'd recommend the gloss variety of this type of shelf. I have a gloss red from Better Homes and Gardens and it is much nicer than the non-glossy white I purchased. Also when I visited the ikea "near" me (a couple of hours away) the finish of the floor model non-gloss white was identical to what I owned--and it leaves a lot to be desired.
I have the expedit 1x1 squares. They are too narrow to hang on two studs. How should I hang them? Stud on one side and anchor on the other? Or two studs on the same side? Thanks!

I watched this video before work this morning, and after work I went to ikea and came home and built it.
This video helped. Thanks!🇨🇦
This video was unbelievably helpful. Thank you so much for sharing. Your little girl was so adorable walking up to help daddy. :)
Thank you, I’m a visual learner and this made it simple.
I’m a visual learner too, I really thought I was trying to convince ppl. Glad m not alone
Great vid and kudos for wearing the Three Lions.
After 25 minutes of trying unsuccessfully how to follow the wordless picture instructions that came with the bookcase, I found this. Thank you.
Thank you for this vid. You just saved me a headache with the Ikea brackets that came with the shelf.
Thank you. I wish I had watched these before I put my bookcase together. Now on to my cube units with some direction.😁
I finally caved in, listened to Lindsay and downloaded Hyezmar’s Woodworking Bible. Needless to say It finally pointed me in the right direction and I’ve made some cool stuff too :)

I bought these second hand, but they had never been assembled. There were no instructions with mine, so Thanks for the your video!!!
Didn't feel like reading instructions, thanks for the quick walk thru your a real Mensch.
Great post! I threw the white piece you click on, I have to go back in the trash to retrieve them. Thanks!

Hey this was great..my husband just hurt his shoulder so I'll be putting tons of these together.
I just got over a shoulder injury. I have no idea what happened either, just woke up and it really hurt. Took a week to go away. Best of luck putting it together!

Good for you!
Very helpful and cute baby... tried to lift the bookshelf with you, awww

Many many thanks from Holland.
I never understood that i already have mounts and dont have to go looking for those long brackets!
Thank you so much! I was going to hire someone to hang them, but I feel super confident to do it myself now! Your baby is such a cutie too. :)
Thank you this was really useful. it took about an hour to get the first one together. Now onto the next one.
Useful video, thanks.
Liked for the Three Lions on the shirt. 🦁🦁🦁
Great video. Very helpful. Favorite part? Cute baby head appearance. 😊
😅 came to figure out how to mount my kallax and got the laugh of the day from baby girl. 😂😂

Great tutorial! Just a heads up it’s a 3/16” bit, not a 3/8ths!
Very helpful and loving the England shirt.
Props for the England shirt 👌
I bought these shelves years ago and just decided to put them up. Thanks for the video! Great help!
thank you, the booklet confused, watching you was extremely clear and helpful, nice shirt too !!
Does the hardware for mounting to wall come with KALLAX? What is the name of the hardware type to I can purchase more?
Extremely helpful video! I put 2 Kallax 4-cube bookshelves together thanks to your help (no wall mounting...just standing in my daughter's room). You need to make a video on what to do when the wooden dowels break inside the holes while assembling! :) Luckily I found some other videos to fix that.
Yeeees!!! Thats why i am reading the comments now! I need a help .. i broke 3 and i don’t know how to take them off :(
You can also run a painted 1 x 3 across the studs and then connect the Kallax to the 1 x 3 using the stock holes.
Thank you so much, I would not have been able to do it without you!!!!!!!
Collette is a little star!
Thanks. Extremely helpful. I purchased one as-is. Just need to find the missing pieces to buy or obtain to mount them

would you recommend doing this method with other brands of shelves? Walmart has similar styles but at a different price with different colors, etc.
Haha ~9:05 that low pitch bass going on...best part of the vid 😂
First I thought he lives in a war zone or someone is playing Call Of Duty there.

Good video. I have a question, Can you not just use plasterboard fixings instead of having to find a stud?
Can this video be helpful for mounting a jewelry armorie as well?
Hello... Im just wondering about the cross shelf in the middle...theres 1 long placed horizontally and 2 short ones on top of each other...
can i reverse this??? I basically want to install the long board vertically because I only want to use one of the short boards because I want to place something tall on 1 of the slots without the short board.
But the shelf itself is very hollow. How well does it stand up to long term use?

Why not use a drill wall anchor, on the left side? Great vid.
Just brought one of these, ? Why can you see screws on top, shouldn't they be at side as it's square and doesn't matter which way round.

Hi! Ty for the video! Does this work with Smagora shelving units also? Ty!
Thanks! the video really helped to understand how to mount since I had lost the instructions. also great tip on the wall beams.

hi do the mounting brackets and face plates come with the shelf?
What kind of brackets did you purchase?
Hey Adam, I hope you’re having a good day. I want to ask you if I could lift it up more?
lagrandeS yes it can be mounted on the wall but it needs to be anchored correctly.
AdamDIY Okay! Thank you❤️
The problem about hanging on the wall is your American wall is not compatible with European furnitures😆
Well obviously, he was drilling into an SAE wall when it was designed for Metric.
The mounting bracket needs to be on the side wood piece NEAR the top, but NOT on the top piece, otherwise you are trusting a few screws going through that top piece of wood to work against gravity to hold A LOT of weight, which is dangerous. Is it possible to get moulding to cover the front sections where you can see its two units?
Is that the white or high gloss white? I don't live near an IKEA (it's 2 hours away), but I'm planning on making 1 trip up there in a month when I get my new apartment and am trying to budget. DPDLC hi! I just wondered if you bought the Kalax in white or white gloss as I'm trying to find out what's best also 🤗
I actually went with Walmart's Better Homes and Gardens version due to a few factors not involving the actual products themselves.
DPDLC so u think the glossy looks best? I might still just go with matte as it's such a big price difference. Thank you for you're reply 👍🏼
Thank you. Very helpful. Especially as I lost the original instructions :)
Good vid, very helpful. Thanks! (Beams do not run vertically, studs do)
Very well done attaching it to the studs. But why not just get the 3 inch legs to raise the shelves if you're going to install it that low.
Thanks. The Ikea store display had it like that. I liked the look of it floating. It's also easier to vacuum without legs in the way.
I don't think that mine came with instructions. Your video was very helpful :)
Thanks for the easy instructions! I was able to put mine together without any issues!
I have the expedit 1x1 squares. They are too narrow to hang on two studs. How should I hang them? Stud on one side and anchor on the other? Or two studs on the same side? Thanks!
+Angela Anaya Hmmm.... I think I understand. I guess it depends on the weight of what you put in/on the cube. I would think that one stud mount and one high quality drywall anchor would work.
Hi Adam! I like your son's presence 😊..how old he is now?
how much weight can they hold while held up on studs/butterfly screws (or whatever) because I wanna use it for records and books and maybe like an indoor house plant on top
Depends which anchors.
Try Grip Its which are used for hanging radiators on walls.
Do you happen to know if they sell extra shelves? I like the design but for my needs I'd like each cube to be half the size.
Yes, you can buy spare parts at the returns desk. At least you can at the IKEA near me.
Thanks for this - very clear and helpful - and you're lovely with your baby!
+Andrea Grace Thank you!
can you link the brackets, please?
Great video. A big thank you!
Super helpful thank you so much for sharing this video
I've got metal studs in the walls. How best to fix wall cabinets on them?
Hey, thanks for the video! Very helpful. Any idea on the max weight those can hold? Would getting longer screws to put in the studs help at all?
