I don't mind a non-Puerto Rican covering the island's colonial history, but to not interview a single actual Puerto Rican in the entire piece was a mistake. There are so many small errors and misleading takes in the video, despite me agreeing with its overall thesis.
Do you know of a good book about this topic?
You'd think he'd want to talk to actual people from the area he's talking about. Kinda absurd.

Not exactly “independence”, more like high degree of autonomy under the Spanish Crown. But yes it was likely heading towards that direction until the US invaded.

@@FukaiKokoro basically yes, if the agreement they were agreeing to went into full effect PR within the Spanish Crown would have been similar to Canada under the British Crown during the Dominion of Canada days. An autonomous “province” with almost all of the qualities of a sovereign country. Full independence was like 5-10 years away if US didn’t arrive to do the “liberation”

As a puertorrican currently living on the island, The only true path to change on the island is independence.
The current colonial status of the island is very hard to live in, with rising crime, flagrant corruption, and constant outages. However I'd say one of the worst aspects of modern life on the island, is the immense neoliberal project to privatize almost all aspects of the islands economic structure. Interpersonally, the issue of gentrification is high. The idea of a tax haven vacation island has pushed many puertorricans out of the costs, with a ridiculous amount of foreign landlords setting up Airbnb's, takes houses off the market and hikes up the prices of all the houses around them. All this does is further the wealth disparity between more inland municipalities, and the more tourist heavy coasts. The major industry Puerto Rico has pushed in the modern day is tourism. Now I have nothing against others appreciating the sites and culture, but this process is one of cultural commodification. It's happened before in Hawaii. The histories of these islands may differ immensely, but the exoticism the tourism industry promotes amplifies tensions between tourists and natives, while extracting wealth from the island. This exchange between the USA and Puerto Rico, has always been one of colonial extraction. In the past it was flagrant, now it's made out as "development", when all this development does is further indebt the island.
The quality of life hasn't substantially improved after privatization at all. There are still water, internet, and power outages (Right now I DO NOT HAVE RUNNING WATER!); there are still hurricanes and floods; and tied to that, there is still political instability and corruption. Of the billions the US government and others have poured into relief, almost all has been for naught. Food and water aid after Hurricane Maria was barely even distributed. Even now, after 6 years, there are roofless houses bearing blue FEMA tarps. As seen in Hurricane Fiona, our inept colonial government hasn't even learned their lesson in preparing for a hurricane! Bridges were still swept in the rivers, communities still flooded, and people were still forced to leave. This pain is taken advantage of.
People leave in cyclical exchange, the US benefits from this. Puertorricans move to the USA for better opportunities and stability, in droves after a crisis. Their now vacant homes are bought up and turned into an investment. The money going in incentivizes other businesses to do the same in other sectors. The environment created appeals to already wealthy families, getting them to buy a property for themselves These families then leave the second a crisis occurs. From the US they see an investment opportunity to capitalize on, as more and more puertorricans leave to never return. This clearly harmful cycle has full support of Pedro Pierluisi's government.
I've said all this for a reason. Why and how would statehood ever improve this? The prevailing narrative the US has sold to puertorricans is that statehood is The Only Valid Option. It may not substantially improve much, but what other option is there! You don't want to be like Haiti do you? Things are bad right now, imagine how bad independence would be! This ignores the fact independence movements on the island have been systematically and brutally persecuted throughout history. Since before the Spanish-American War, there has been direct action done in the name of independence. The 1 time a Puerto Rican Republic was proclaimed, it lasted hours before a US intervention. The defanging of the independence movement was a deliberate, century spanning act, done both on the island, and in the US itself. To others it's not about that, it's a matter of principal. "No taxation without representation!", as if that representation will make us just like Florida and Alaska.
An example of the just treatment Puerto Rico has received throughout the years, is their treatment of Vieques and Culebra. The United States performed naval operations on our smaller islands of Vieques and Culebra for decades, leaving waste and pollution, and stealing land from the islands' inhabitants. Only after massive protests (1999 - 2003) did they even make any effort to leave. Their presence still affects the islands! Throughout history, no agreement the US and Puertorrican governments have made with each other has ever been on equal terms; nor will it ever be, no matter the representation conceded to us. Illusions of the magic of statehood only exist now that the colony has run its course. Now that the US is being forced to back a horse, it only makes sense they'd choose the deal in which they keep Puerto Rico, and all its resources, forever.
In the end, independence is not a piece of paper, it's a process. It may take at least a decade to work towards reversing the dependencies colonial rule grew throughout the 60's. It may take 2 to reinforce local infrastructure, incentivize local farming, and expunge the predatory business' stranglehold. It may be a lifetime until the decade long brain drain problem the island's faced can finally be resolved. The point is working towards the goal with the historical understanding that the position Puerto Rico has been in since 1508 is the direct result of centuries of colonial dominance. The younger generation of independentistas is growing to understand that. The transition period would be difficult to adapt to, but Puerto Rico would be better off in the end self reliant and free.
TLDR, so those who don't wanna read this essay of a damn comment could get the memo.
Pedro Pierluisi's neoliberal government has gone to great lengths to further privatization believing it to be the fix to all of PR's problems. Everything, from crime, to outages, to unrest, is worse. The end goal of statehood, due to the historical and geopolitical conditions of Puerto Rico, both under Spanish and American control, only serves to further the brain drain, commodification of the culture, and gentrification the island faces today. These conditions make Puerto Rico perfect for predatory investors and hyper-rich tourists, all extracting wealth at the island's expense. The suppression of the independence movement is a major factor in puertorrican delegitimizing of even the concept of independence, and with the track record the USA has had just in general with Latin American countries, the idea any agreement made between the 2 countries could ever be made on even terms is laughable. At the end of the day, the younger generations are growing more pro independence by the hour. All this being with the understanding that it is the process of independence that must be pursued, to then create the conditions in which it could not just survive, but flourish.
Puerto Rico Libre
Puerto Ricans will choose whatever gives them money. Whether it's independence or statehood. And it's up to them, no one else.
I think another more controversial angle of this is American impacts on our island's culture and values, you mentioned imported neoliberalism but social and religious conservatism is documented to have been pushed by American evangelicals on an increasing percentage of the people here, as in much of the rest of Latin America (eg. the history of evangelicalism in Brazil and its effect on the Bolsonaristas). Not to mention American diet influences, American car culture, so many things that have become very intrinsic to the past and present on our island in very difficult to parse ways. I do not have the answers to all of them but I think we ought to be able to take a lot at ourselves and notice whether those things do us good or do us harm.

The original video left out a few details such as how the US Navy rigged one of their own ships to explode and blame it on the Spanish crown to start a war with them, how there was a group of Puerto Rican nationalists got into the US Capitol building with explosives with intentions of blowing it up, how the FBI made a raid to kill the leader of Los Macheteros in his own house, how medical treatments were tested with Puerto Rican locals without their consent, how the US Navy bombed a surveillance checkpoint and killed a guard which then made Puerto Ricans join forces to kick the Navy out and now every general election has a plebiscite regarding status that would "finally" make Puerto Rico a state... even if the process isn't approved by the US Congress...

@@Poookoook According to some reading I found, there were conflicting theories over the explosion of the USS Maine with some saying that it was an accident while others said that "only the explosion of a mine placed below the Maine could've caused its destruction". Apparently the Maine was sent to patrol Cuba as they were fighting for their independence against Spain and that it was believed that the US could've interfered in favor of Cuba if it came down to it. The day after the explosion, the US media accused Spain of sinking the ship, starting the US vs Spain war that involved Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
The US Navy made an investigation with the remains of the USS Maine in 1911 and there was no solid evidence found over what caused the explosion that sank the ship, putting into question the thought that an external explosion from below was what sunk them down. Investigators came up with a theory that the explosion might've come from within, mentioning the overheating and spontaneous combustion of coal, poor security measures regarding their use of gunpowder near coal cauldrons and poor ventilation as possible causes to make a fire that went undetected until it got in contact with gunpowder.
In how Puerto Rico ties into this, the US forces came through Guánica in mid 1898 as part of the war and they took control of most of the island shortly after by convincing locals that they were there to help the fight off the Spanish and that they'll help them join the United States as part of the New World. General Nelson A. Miles is leading the charge, being put in front of the US invasion after his success fighting off Native American forces.
Just forgot about this part: There were theories of the US Navy rigging their own ship to explode and blame it on the Spanish, that the Cubans exploded and then blamed the Spanish and that William R. Hearst, who was a communication media tycoon in the US at the time, mysteriously went to Cuba and got inside the Maine days before it exploded... while pushing for a smear campaign against the Spanish crown in 1898 given the tension in Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean, essentially blaming them for the explosion.

I think the whole purpose of Johnny Harris is to slowly build legitimacy and sweep up people in the left wing for more mainstream policies. Basically he will say "America bad" when it's stuff deep in American history, but not really challenging too much of modern American empire, while advocating for America to do similar things to what he's criticizing and saying it's good actually because China/Russia/whoever worse.
I mean the guy had no fucking footprint and then all of a sudden he's part of leftist react channels/streams.

Harris didn't make his assignment good, especially calling the main leader of the Puertorrican Nationalist Movement, Pedro Albizu Campos just Campos. We use both our last names, so it's either Albizu Campos or just Albizu. Campos isn't enough. Also, he didn't talked about the Maravilla Hill case (Vistas del Cerro Maravilla), which basically was the halfway end of the first wave of the Carpetas (there's another happening right now), and other riots and stuff in the 1960s-1980s. Is way, WAY complex than Harris talked in his video.

We are also under a dictatorship at the moment, the US appointed a financial oversight board, which can and has overturned decisions made by our government. So we aren't even that autonomous anymore.

I'm an American who lives in PR. A big vote is coming this election to decide if they become a state, stay the same, or separate entirely from us. I'm interested in what's best for the people there. It just seems like no one actually knows what that is.
That big plebiscite vote has happened like 6 times already and Statehood has won the last 3 times. The US doesn't care about letting PR be independent or making it a state.
They will ignore it for the 1000th time. Also, there's barely education on how everything will transition, change if Puerto Rico changes its actual status. And no one wanna talk about it from the mainstream.

Spanish is our main language. There's always been a fight under the American colonization (including now) about our main language. The taino (the aboriginal inhabitants before the Spanish Colonization) language got somehow absorbed into Spanish, although there's some very few people who know that language right now. Y'all always, for example, using Taino words, at least derived from it: barbecue (from bar ba coa, which means roasting in a stick, the coa), and hurricane (from huracán = Jurakán, god of the bad weather).
So it's right that Spanish is our main language, and we don't wanna substitute it.
True, however there's no indigenous languages in PR to call "native" as the process of mestizaje did the "Spanish or vanish" to the natives before Duolingo was a thing.
