For those that ask the purpose of the hood vents, if your cooling system is working properly they're not required, but we don't do it to help cool the engine as much as the people. Running in 4-low at 4 mph for long periods of time generates a giant "heat cloud" around the jeep as the heat seeps out from underneath. I run my XJ with my doors off and I can definitely feel the "heat cloud" and it sucks, especially on hot days in NC. While my cooling system works great (temp never climbs above 210) the vents allow A LOT of heat to escape straight up, drawing cooler air in from underneath, and preventing the "heat cloud". Nice job, Tim!
Heat soak, sir. The term you’re looking for is “heat soak”.
uwharrie will kill an xj in the summer bro I'm still trying to get it right
I really like how that turned out. I spent the whole video thinking that it would look ridiculous when it was done but it actually has a nice subtle aggressive look to it.
Your deadpan comedy performance is professional level 💯
Im an idiot! I blew at my screen when I saw all those shavings on the hood lol
Nice idea! I did this and use some magnetic sign material to cover the holes in the winter or rain. They hold well and are cut to fit between roof ribs for storage when not in use.
Good idea
What do you mean magnetic sign material?
wait, your worried about water dripping in from the top? but if you drive it in the rain water gets flung from the fan and tires. what's the point of worrying about it
balzarini51 Splash off from below is a lot different than direct rain coming in from the top sitting in your spark plug wells and sitting on your electrical components.
“Imma drill a hole, and just wing it from there...”
Best advice for simple projects. Don’t over complicate.
Took some Adderall before watching the video, and ended up putting some vents on the side of my truck and replacing the seats as well. Never got around to finish watching the Video...
Can you please do a full walk around of you white 2 door xj, showing everything you've done and how exactly that exhuast sounds, excuse me if you have already but I couldn't find it, love the channel!
I dig the vibe in this video 🙃
The look turned out pretty cool actually.
Thanks for the idea!
Much inspiration from this page. Keep it up guys.
Check out the rotabroach bits also. They work great for punching holes through sheetmetal up to 1/2" or so thick material.
You can Dimple Die the holes to make them stronger and they look cool.. :-)
Those look awesome man! I think it would look cool if they were dimple died, and it would probably add some strength!
Do an update on what you put under the hood to deflect the rain.
Switek i used to sell shitty aftermarket hoods and i could never easily tell you how to do that.
That's a nice looking XJ. Gratz!
That's how you fix a paint chip. Lmao. Now my jeep looks like a whiffle ball
just put some window screen under the holes and glue it to the bottom of the hood, this should prevent debris from entering your engine compartment. I don't know about the rain problem.
NICE JOB MAN .............. YOU MUST HAVE MEASURED TWICE AND DRILLED ONCE !!
Great video
Maybe inspired me. I'm going to add louvers to my hood, but not buying them before some other items, so I may just cut some holes until I am ready to cut out the section for the louvers. Thanks for the vid.
Excellent video , but I'm gonna put a cowl hood scoop in Fri lol so it can breath but keep 90% of the water out
Did this actually help with heat issue? Would you do it again?
Tim do a vid on your fenders! The hood vents look awesome!
Agreed! I'll second that comment...i wanna know about those fenders!
Bobby Bruner Armacell self adhesive pipe insulators. Made in USA. Under $6ea at home depot. Cheap, easy, looks decent.
Tim
+hallamphoto What size adhesive pipe insulator did you use for the fenders?
Looks good! How do I keep the rain out?
I like the way that looks. How much of a temperature reduction did you get from it? And have you thought about lining the holes with thin grommets or door trim?
YEAH,no
You could have used the sawzall on your unibrow bro
+Best Bass Boosted Bleeping Jeep, my comment was mean spirited. For this i apologize my good sir !
Best Bass Boosted good on you sir. you don't often see apologizes on youtube. it's so easy to get sucked into the negativity of the internet. nice to see a post like this.
Oh don't gush on about it. How about not making such petty, shitass, absolutely unrelated, mean-spirited and unnecessary comments to begin with? He doesn't deserve a fucking medal.
How much cooler did your engine run after? They look great by the way.
jay vee Maybe a tad cooler while driving. Nothing dramatic, but the holes billow visible heat waves in 4-Lo and when parked so you know they're dissipating heat.
Any info about the flares on this jeep too.... maybe a highlight on the whole rig. It's pretty sweet.
Bobby Bruner Armacell self adhesive pipe insulators. Bough them from home depot for under $6ea. Made in the USA and they have been holding up well. I filmed a Jeep walk around but it isn't online yet. Thanks -
Tim
Any update on this?
I really like the videos and you have a lot of good ideas. Thank you for the ideas. If I may make one observation though. I don't know if it is your camera or the upload to youtube, but your volume is really low. Yes, I did turn up my speakers....
I like this guy
So I guess Tim never did an update to this. But I'm thinking about going this route. And for the rain i don't see the point. My entire engine bay gets wet/ muddy when I go out. Plus I look at it like this. If it's out side it's water proof. Lol good vid tho
Hey Tim, I sure would like to see what you're going to do about rain trays.
nothing...?? ever driven a jeep in rain? water comes through the grill and flung from the tires.
He said he was thinking about doing rain trays, so I asked him. Is that alright?
You know those floor heater grill covers that screw to your floor on forced air heat systems? I can get those at Habitat For Humanity for $1.00 apiece. I'm thinking about buying a couple, painting them black and mounting them to the hood of my blue XJ. I'm thinking it might look pretty dope, it's a damn near FREE option and would serve the main purpose in keeping my engine cool in the summer. For the size I'm thinking 6"x12" floor register grills, but I could go up to 16" I believe. Thoughts?
Where's Matt!!!?? Bring back that monotoned maan!!!!
Waterjet?? You must be a machinest who rather be working on his 4x4 like myself.cool video have been thinking about adding vents to my rig.
were you including the 1/8th inch thick blade in your mathematical equation. they look great
Been thinking about doing something like this and using chicken wire or some kind of mesh to put on the inside of the hood... I'm just worried about the holes being right on top of the motor and rain getting in : / looks like I'll be searching the forums today to find out what others have done ha
Are you thinking of coming up with some kind of screens for those? Even a plastic mesh or door screen would work. *shrug* maybe fab some kind of vented caps to drop in. I'll be looking forward to the update to this with the rain catch.
SurplusSupply I'm liking the wide open look and will be focusing on the rain catch/diversion before any mesh. Considering a cover for snow though, so icicles don't envelope my throttle body in the winter.
Tim
Nice. Thanks for the reply.
So the Jeep has been running at normal operating temperature before you cut the holes?
Man, you funny as shit lmao.
"And it's uhhh *checks watch* early" 😂
I'm considering the small cowl and plastic vent cover from a cj /yj just on the driver's side, thoughts?
Your no fucking joke bro to walk in with a burger your the man
What will happen when rain starts pouring?
Lookth pretty thweet dude 👍🏻👍🏻 !!!
What should I do at 110+
degrees
Has it improved with the heat soak or temp?
Legit question from someone just getting into cars, what about rain getting in?
Did you watch until the end of the video?
Yup.. sorry
He is going to build some water deflectors, but to address your question, plenty of water get in there when it rains. Hoods aren't water tight and many people even clean their engines with a pressure washer. A little rain won't be a problem unless you've modified the engine in such a way to make it more susceptible to water intrusion.
For example, an open element air cleaner or something silly like that.
But, also, I wouldn't do this to make your car run cooler either, I'd only do it if you think it looks cool. If you engine is running hot, fix the problem, don't just drill holes in the body.
So that's how to remove a paint chip. All this time I had it wrong
11:15 what tool is that?
Is called a de-burrer it takes the sharp extra metal pieces off
You can find it in the plumbing section of a improvement/hardware store. It is mostly for reaming water lines and conduit but what the heck it works! Awesome job Tim!
howd you do the fender flares?
lol. funny and informative.
Now its going to rain right into your engine bay and get everything soaked, you should cover them somehow
Love me some onion rolls!
that is an Arby's sandwich! lol
How do u deflect the rain from the engine compartment?
high speeds!
DAMB BRO GET A SHOP VAC ... THOSE METAL SHAVINGS G2G ON THE HOOD !!!
5:28 I'm done. Can't take the antics anymore.
How much lift and tire size on that xj
Trenton regenhard Lift: too much. Tires: too small... 6.5" & 33s
You could just flush the radiator / block
What bumper is that?
I now see its a stock bumper with a grille guard? Which One?
What happens when it rains?
12:58
What were the results? Did you see improvement in engine temperature?
Jargon StarCraft Minimally noticeable on the temp gauge but its amazing how much heat flows out of those holes when you're spending a lot of time in 4-Lo and when you park it. If nothing else they certainly allow the engine bay to dissipate heat more quickly after shutting it off.
looks good. now you have to do something about that uni-brow.
Where is this guy from? It looks like an Oregon plate...anybody know?
Looks like Oregon to me. You can see Oregon plates in another video as well.
Jargon StarCraft Southern Oregon
TJH Im up in NW Oregon, out side of portland. if your ever up this way we should go wheeling.
boobybooski1985 I am here next to Salem !!
Nice intro..lol
Can u share the measurements you used please. My fb is Billyjax.
wow this is so slow & boring, great job
Bruh that worm on your forehead keeps moving I can’t focus on the vid
