  • Today marked the “official” first flight of Tom Reilly’s XP-82 Twin Mustang following a decade-long restoration effort. According to all involved, it went magnificently.... The world now has an airworthy Twin Mustang for the first time in many decades! Bravo to Tom Reilly and his entire restoration team, and to Walter Soplata who had the foresight to save this remarkable prototype when no one else would!
    Thanks to Christine Lesko and Chuck Gardner for the clips!

    I remember having to go to Tom's place to pick up a prop for the Mitchell and Tom was showing me around and he opined to some longerons that they had built and piles of parts telling me that they were rebuilding a P-52. Back in the early '70s, I was a student pilot in California, and grabbed a chance for some cheap cross-country dual time with my instructor, who was taking his father's Aeronca 7ac (no lights, no radio, no electrics) back to upstate New York.
      One of our overnight stops was near a high school friend's home near Cleveland, and we hitched a ride the next morning to the Soplata farm near Newbury, OH. Lots of WW2 aircraft to drool over, including an F-82 (IIRC, it would be the one now being restored in Anoka, MN), all tucked in around the trees on the farm. Neat to see one of them taking flight again.

    It was Election day 2016. I was flying from Lebanon Tn to Lake Wales FL. First stop, DQH. While fueling I noticed and open hangar and lots of activity going on inside. I finish fueling and walk over to the FBO to inquire about this War bird in the hangar. The nice lady gave me a tour. It was this plane. She said the restoration was at year 8 at that point. Got lots of pics. These guys were making panels from scratch due to parts scarcity. Not sure if this is the plane but I'd bet my plane it is. Magnificent work.

Skilled restorers and historians bringing back these old warbirds and experimental aircraft long gone that we’d only seen in old photos that we thought we would never get to see fly again. Thank you to ones that work the long hours not to mention the financial backing needed to find and restore these legends of the air. I’m hearing of a lot of planes coming to flying status hopefully. From the P-61 that MAAM has to the Val divebomber in Chino. I’ve even heard of a possible flying Stuka, and now we have a Twin Mustang, WOW. Hats off to you all.

    I know that many people are saying that the Twin Mustang is a weird looking aircraft,but the idea behind it is the fact that only 2-fuselages housing their own engines eliminated the Aerodynamic's of a third fuselage or nacelle like the P-38 has,considerably reducing Drag,which increased it's speed. Two pilots could relieve each other flying on long escort-missions it was supposed to make over Japan. The XP-82 had a top-speed of 486-MPH,which is almost 50 miles per hour faster than the P-51D(437-MPH) Mustang at 21,000 feet.

    • @jcf20010
      @jcf20010 5 лет назад +20

      And not having that center fuselage is what makes it look strange to me.
      I was surprised to see that it had counter rotating props like the P-38. The P-38 was the only multi engine plane of that era that had counter rotating props.
      The P-38 is one of my all time favorite planes. :-)

    Wow! What a rare and unique warbird! It’s awesome to see one flying! The P-82 was originally conceived as a very long-range escort fighter to escort the B-29s from their bases in the Marianna Islands to Japan and back. The two pilots can alternate flying and relieving each other during the long-range flights. The P-82s were not completed in time to be operational in WWII and with the acquisition of the midway island of Iwo Jima, the P-51 escort fighters were based there. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, the now designated F-82s were the first Japan-based USAF fighters to arrive and see action in the War’s early stages. They made the first kills of the Korean War by shooting down a couple of North Korean Yaks. 🇺🇸👍👏

    If memory serves me correctly, there was one in Topeka, Ks. (Forbes Field?) about 45 years ago that crashed on takeoff, killing the pilot. If I recall correctly it was determined that he had confused the choke with the gear retraction knob and choked the engines. I was probably 12 or so at the time and remember thinking that it was a rare bird even then. Glad to see there are a couple still flying and more in the future.

    Massive shout of respect for all involved in this brilliant restoration, the XP-82 is singularly "unique" and without doubt a supberb example of creative thinking and engineering at a time of great need.
    Maybe one day (I hope) we may see it over here in the Uk, well done everyone.

    Just did a bit of research on the project website and it looks like they are Merlin engines. The restoration was of the prototype which did indeed have Merlins as did the early production examples. Later versions had Allisons.

    Great work! I've been following the blog and admiring all the hard work, research and dedication to bring this bird back to airworthiness. I wish I could be there to see it in person.

    One fuselage and twin Merlins would be sweet indeed.
