Wonderful work. I’ve been using the of bmpcc on shoots for many years now and would like to offer you a little advice which you may find useful. Firstly I would watch out for dust on your lens or filter as when you shoot into the sun the small specs of dirt show up. Secondly I would try and avoid overdoing the stabilisation in post as most shots look great but there were just a few that looked unnatural due to adding to much stabilisation in resolve. Great work overall and looking forwards to seeing what you create next!

    • @fundacionmetropol
      @fundacionmetropol  2 года назад +2

@@maxb5529 I think it depends of what you're expecting for.
I find it pretty good, very useful and a tool to work faster than with a tripod or a slider but the truth is that it's not a perfect substitute. The movements never gonna be as smooth like that and if you want it to reach as close as possible, it may needs a bit of stabilization in post.
About the Weebill S itself, I think is strong enough to carry a BMPCC, even the new ones, with almost any cage in the market. The specs say 3 Kgs of maximum payload and, according to my short experience, sounds raliable. I mount the BMPCC og bared and need to set the motor strengh to the lewest to make it works fine.
I bought a second handed by 200 bucks including the follow focus servo. If you could get it for a similar price, I think it would be a good investment.
Not sure if that's what you're asking for but hope it helps :)

Since a while, I'm trying not to use the Black Mist or the Black Satin (which is really good) filters. Don't get me wrong, they rock, but I tend to prefer to work with the kind of camera and lens I got without pursuing to fake a higher end equipment.

I don't remember exactly the process but what I tend to do is to exaggerate the saturation even more than it's going to be, and then, I start to play with temp and tint and try to place the colors where I like them.
Then, and in this case, I saturated a little more the two shades of blue and made them a little darker to compensate.
Once I've got the colors like I want, I push back the saturation to a place that could looks plaussible.
Almost everything else is using FilmCovert that definitely helps in this messing with the colors.

I'm not an expert, that's for sure, but I think the new BMPPC's have much more functionalities and they give you more room to make different kind of videos. This could be really useful if you're looking for making the corporate kind of videos or high-res spots.
The good point (a great one for me) of the OG is that it has its own character and it doesn't feel digital. The shots, properly exposed, seem pretty proffesionals and have some cinemathic vibe that is hard to explain.
I'd not change my OG for a 4k if I could. Maybe for a 6K in the future, but right now I'm really happy with this little monster.

I had the OG Pocket for a little over a year, recently switched to the Micro Cinema Camera that has the same sensor.
Like others have said, it’s got a great cinematic look to it right off the bat when exposed correctly and has a natural, filmic grain when shooting at 400 and 800 ISO. Regular ProRes 422 can work fine for certain things, particularly if you wanna shoot all day on 256GB+ without switching cards - but it really shines with RAW. Cool tip: If you shoot outside at a color temperature of 6000K, you can bring that into Da Vinci Resolve and use a color space transform corrector node. Set the input color space and gamma to Blackmagic Design Film (Gen 1 for color space) and the output color space and gamma to ARRI Alexa and ARRI LogC with gamut mapping set to saturation compression. Add two nodes after that with the last node being an ARRI Alexa LogC to Rec709 LUT and you’ll have yourself a cheap, tiny camera that can get the ARRI look. Use the middle node for adjustments to exposure and maybe temp/tint. This only works accurately with the original Pocket (and ideally an IR filter) set to 6000K because Resolve defaults Gen 1 color science to that color temperature, whether it’s CinemaDNG RAW or ProRes. BRAW doesn’t have this limitation on the newer Blackmagic cameras.
One of the many reasons I went with this little camera was because I thought I would get the quality of great RAW while also not overworking my older computer from 2013 - turns out the compressed BRAW from the 4K and 6K Pocket cams are even easier on my computer than the 1080p CinemaDNG RAW from the OG Pocket. So CPU usage isn’t necessarily a plus with this RAW, but that’s easily addressed with optimized media in Resolve after determining the RAW settings you’ll stick with (I recommend DNxHR HQX since it gives you great 4:2:2 12-bit with way less stress on the computer and takes up less space than RAW - you could do ProRes 4444 but I believe that’s a higher bitrate than the original RAW recording and the 4:4:4 color space is just adding redundant color information).
Other than that, great reasons for these older cameras are: initial price, mobility, cheap media, and simplicity.
Initial Price: I got the Pocket for $430 on eBay, you can sometimes find it cheaper than that. Cheapest 4K Pocket I’ve seen is $900, but it’s usually $1000+.
Mobility: I rigged mine up quite a bit, and it was still fairly light. When I wanted to get more run-and-gun stuff, I could strip it down to it’s base and just carry extra Nikon batteries with me to change them out every 20-40 minutes. You could easily attach a wireless mic with an aux Zoom recorder like the H1n to an actor and use the camera’s scratch audio to sync it up later for high quality video+sound for those times when you can’t quite afford a filming permit ;)
Cheap Media: Kingston cards are great for RAW, most cheap/older cards apart from the SanDisk V30 series will work just fine for ProRes. If the camera recognizes the card, you can definitely do ProRes - unless it’s kind of hot and you’re recording for several minutes at a time. I’ve noticed the little red exclamation icon when it feels warm and that’s when it drops frames, more so with RAW. Pocket 4K does well with more expensive media like CFast, although a 1TB SSD from Samsung is cheap - but I prefer internal recording options without wires.
Simplicity: Fewer recording options sounds like a negative, but I like only having 5 record options on the original Pocket and 6 on the Micro, although I never use ProRes Proxy or LT, so it’s more like 3 and 4 options respectively. I’m not fiddling with various resolutions, aspect ratios, compressions, and codecs. It’s basically just RAW or ProRes HQ, with the occasional 422 for certain things like wanting to squeeze a few more shots at the end of a card without switching or shooting all day. Micro adds a 3:1 compression option which I use for 50p and 60p if I still want RAW.
Overall: If you want long term quality and can afford it, then maybe get the 6K or 6K Pro. If you want that 16mm feel with a pleasing grain and portability, Pocket is fantastic. It’s the only camera I know of with that quality that can actually fit in my pocket, especially with a nice pancake lens like the Leica 15mm f/1.7
One small drawback I hinted at earlier is the need for an IR filter. The Blackmagic cameras in general don’t filter out all the IR that well so some leaks into the image, tending to overexpose the red channel and muddy the shadows. This problem can be made more apparent with ND filters. A good IR cut filter should mostly fix this issue though. Without that, a quick and dirty method can be to bring down the saturation of the red channel a bit, and maybe the gain. You can add a corrector node in Resolve, right click it and go to channels, and uncheck channels 2 and 3. First channel (red) will be the only one affected and you can slightly lower gain and saturation there. Gain can be lowered to 99 or 98, and saturation down to 48 or so.
