Procedure worked like a charm on my 1995 Yamaha 90 2-stroke. Tilt was stuck in the up position, we added fluid to the reservoir but still could not get the engine to lower. So we turned the manual release screw and heard noises but nothing happened until we pushed the button again to start lowering the motor and it slowly dropped until it felt the hydraulic pressure. We tightened the manual release, then ran through the fill/bleed procedure 4 or 5 times, and now it's working great. Thanks Drew!
THANK YOU! Finally, the information I needed! Dealer insisted I bring it in, wrong info from a shade-tree mechanic and ZERO help from manufacturer! FRUSTRATING!
I was told I needed a new trim unit but I watched your video and decided to try it and it fixed my issue saving me a lot of money. Thanks bud I greatly appreciate the info.
THANK YOU for posting this video! The trim on my motor was really struggling on the upper end and was getting progressively worse. After iterating through several YT vids, I found yours. Adding fluid fixed the issue. Note that I am NOT a mechanic -- your vid gives a great overview! I ordered parts on Amazon and had my trim/tilt issue fixed in
Awesome video. This just happened to me yesterday at the ramp when I was coming back in. I had to pull my boat out of the water with my motor down. My boat luckily sat high enough on the trailer to not high the ramp. It took 2 guys to lift my F225. There was a lot of air in the fluid. I was able to get it to a point to where I could take my boat home. I'm going to try to fix this myself thanks to your video.
That foam doesn't look good to me. Is water possibly getting in there? Anyway, I had this same problem, added more fluid, purged and all was good, for a couple of weeks. Turns out there was a reason I was low on fluid, trim end caps were leaking a bit. From what I'm seeing this is super common for these Yamahas. Nice job on the video.
Hello from Italy, got the same exact problem on my 1992 Yamaha 90a unit. I was a little concerned because in the user manual there is the procedure to change the foot oil but not the trim oil. I will give it a try once found the correct oil, in the meanwhile thanks a lot!
Great video .Subscribed ..i just opened my internal motor and cleaned the brushes etc .Put it all back together and was working ok .Now tbe motor struggles and intermittently stops then starts again a few minutes later .The tilt sounds like its struggling but seems to be ok now and again especially at the top .Its doing my nut in .
@ after you fill it you put the plug back with just a couple of threads and tilt it up and down 5 times so how does the air escape with the plug in loosely. Other videos show after filling leaving the plug out while tilting up and down 5 times, confused.
I put the plug in loose because it was foaming. With it loose the air could still escape and I actually took it out again after a few up and downs, which I thought I showed in the video? Which would have released any pressure if any had built up! Cheers Drew
Nice. I took my 1997 boat with Yamaha 150hp 2 stroke to a boat mechanic and he said it was a sealed unit and I needed a new tilt/trim. Not making this up.
Hi Graham, if you see that the oil level has dropped or that it has foamed up when you open the full plug again you know that you definitely have air in the system that needs purging! Do let us know how you get on? Cheers Drew
I had this problem after replacing the trim/tilt motor. None of the videos address the issue. I found that with the engine tilted up and with the safety catch locked in place, I could use the normal fluid add and bleed procedure. I would let the motor attempt to tilt the engine up, then reverse and let the motor attempt to lower the engine. It couldn’t go anywhere with the safety latch in place and I limited how long I ran the motor so as not to burn it up. After each “down” attempt I removed the reservoir cap, let the air out and filled with fluid. That took about a half dozen tries before I got enough fluid in to start actually moving the rams and lifting/lowering the engine. Then I proceeded with the process as shown in this video.
I have just bought a boat with the same engine, now it is stuck in upper position..the tiltmotor runs, but it is really stuck. What did you do to release it from upper position?
You may have to use the screw that releases the pressure in the system so you can lift it or lower it by hand. Happened to my 1992 70 Hp at boat ramp. Turned screw lifted motor while friend put in transom saved. Hoping low fluid is my issue since it’s an old motor and just recently started running after sitting up for several years. Good luck.
Hello guys, I bought a boat with an old Yamaha outboard 2-stroke engine built in 1983 50HP Model: 6F4 and I can't find a parts list or repair instructions. This engine is not listed anywhere. I'm desperate, someone please help me. Thanks in advance
Hi Gus, I just posted a tilt trim diagnosis video which I believe will help you isolate your problem: ruclips.net/video/F-orUwDgfVo/видео.html Cheers Drew
I guess my question is this: If you needed to top it off with fluid since it was low, why was it low? Where did the fluid that was in there go? It’s a closed system, so there must be a leak somewhere no? A seal? Just curious becusse I’m about to tackle a similar issue, I tilt mine up and down fine, no problem, but when I put it up all the way and come back the next day is lowered 2-3” then and other day a few more inches and after a handful of days the motor is now lowered all the way down. So I’m thinking there may be a leak or something? Not sure.
Hi Mate, yes it is probably weeping a little from the cylinder seals, however my motor is going on 25 years old and had never been topped up. My attitude is I plan to monitor it for the time being, however if it is an issue I will replace the seals myself (and if I do there will be a video)! Cheers Drew

Great video. Concise, without being excessively long-winded. I wish more people made videos like this!
Thanks Greg, I appreciate your support!! Cheers Drew

This video was perfect. Showing the release screw was key. All better

Thanks for sharing.
Hi Pashko, thanks for the feedback! Cheers Drew
Did this exact procedure on my 2012 Yamaha 115 4-stroke. Thanks for the great tips. Worked perfectly!
Hi Joe, thanks for the feedback and glad the video was helpful!! Cheers Drew

Thanks Brother! Absolutely a great video. I'm off to service my '91 C85.
Good luck with yours!! Cheers Drew
Thank you I was able to fill with fluid and it works great now.
Nicely done
I need help, why is my fluid flushing out from where the cylinder is when i put the motor down, bad seal?
Yep, you need to change the seals
92 Yamaha 70 2 stroke problem solved ! 👍 Thanks!
Absolutely great video! Very helpful
Hi Brian, this was my first video related to boats, so absolutely thanks for the feedback! Cheers Drew

Fantastic video, thanks!
My pleasure! Cheers Drew
How does the air come out with the plug in ?
You undo the plug as I showed you in the video.
@ after you fill it you put the plug back with just a couple of threads and tilt it up and down 5 times so how does the air escape with the plug in loosely. Other videos show after filling leaving the plug out while tilting up and down 5 times, confused.

Ciao sapresti mandarmi link di kit ricambi o -ring per revisione trim? Grazie
Nice. I took my 1997 boat with Yamaha 150hp 2 stroke to a boat mechanic and he said it was a sealed unit and I needed a new tilt/trim. Not making this up.
Thanks mate for sharing, this is exactly why I make these videos!! Cheers Drew
Notify Yamaha if he claims to be certified or works for a dealer.
Is that crackling noise because there is air in the system? Thank you.
I have same motor in video do you know what trim seal kit it takes by chance. Part number
Good video, could you suggest a possible fix for my outboard. It’s stuck in the up position.
My 1999 yamaha 90hp slowly drops, I filled the resevoir but I didn't purge the air like you did. I will definitely give this a try when I can.

@@DrewFixIt Looks like there might be another issue as my problem is still occurring. Back to the drawing board as they say.....

What if after doing the cap seals the motor doesn’t go up or down
When your bleeding it out out and putting the screw in each time are you tightening it up with a wrench or just hand tight?
Hi James, just hand tight between each bleed mate! Cheers Drew
Good video. But what if trim won"t raise or lower to add fluid/
I had this problem after replacing the trim/tilt motor. None of the videos address the issue. Cheers mate just fixed my issue
Mint, thankyou 😊
Always check when doing your services
Damn good advice there! Cheers Drew
Are you keeping the cap loose in order for the air to escape?
Hi Dan, not particularly! Cheers Drew
I have just bought a boat with the same engine, now it is stuck in upper position..the tiltmotor runs, but it is really stuck. What did you do to release it from upper position?
Have you checked the safety latch? Cheers Drew

Hey by chance do you know what the manufacturer year of this engine is, I have the same exact one but the tag is missing
Hi Darren, I don’t remember the exact year but it is something like mid 90’s. Say 1997. Cheers Drew

Need to do this on my 1999 Yamaha 60hp outboard. hank you!
When I tries to trim my motor up and down my relay clicks, low on hydraulic oil? Or trim motor gone? Brushes stuck?
