Hi Will, really enjoyed the crossing.I have done it twice on my own boat, moored to a buoy first time then beached second as I had another boat with us that had dog’s on board.Crossed with Darryl Hill the pilot top bloke,I will be doing it again next year after visiting York, moored on the Llangollen canal at the moment .
I enjoyed it but it's a long day Les and I didn't like the river section. Well worth it just for the excitement. Beautiful Wales. I was there last winter in those storms. I bet it's frozen now. Keep warm and dry.

Hi Will, Condolences for he loss of your beautiful Queen. Prayers for her family and for the country. I felt such anxiety knowing you were going over the Wash. Glad you are ok!! Your videos are very beautiful. I love hearing about all the history you share in your travels. God Bless❤
That's very kind of you to say so. The Queen will be missed. It's one of those journeys every narrowboater knows about but only a few dare do it. Thankyou for watching.
Excellent vlog, Will. I was holding my breath for most of the crossing. And going into/thru the Denver Sluice was scary as all get out to me. Will’s Way did good and you were brilliant! Thanks for taking us alone. I know filming added to the stress of everything so we appreciate it all.
Wow! You are soooo brave! It looked crazy, especially coming into Denver Sluice from King's Lynn. I had a real pang for the River Great Ouse when I saw you mooring up at the end, such a stunning place to take your boat. Loved the seals and the seabirds; I think the bird that you kept seeing was lapwing. They make an incredible noise and are beautiful to watch in the air. I am looking forward to your next set of vlogs. Brilliant NB Will! 👍 Take care🦋🌻

That was an example of stupid, selfish behaviour that may have lead to the death of seal pups as they often do when disturbed like this. There will soon be a law making this a serious criminal offense. If you don't understand why this is necessary, you should keep well away from coast and countryside.
Wow thats a brave journey. Looks great, enjoyed riding along with you there. I reckon that bird at 23:00 was a Lapwing, often known as a Peewhit after the sound of its call.
I'm back home with decent Internet after cruising g season done and what a cracking episode popped up. I'll have to binge watch your past trips over the summer.

I felt quite nervous watching that and I'm sitting at home in a chair you stopped in the middle of nowhere I thought I hope the wind doesn't get up what is a storm comes in ! nice one
Wow, that was exciting. I don't think I'd dare to do it. I like my feet on the ground or on a bicycle. Condolences on the death of the Queen. I'm glad she was up in Balmoral where she loved to be. She gave so much to the people of the UK and the world.
@@NarrowboatWillDid it in a twin diesel cruiser. The first time we did it it was a bit rough and there was so much crap in the diesel tank that it kept clogging the pipes and filters and stopping us dead lol. @@NarrowboatWill wishing you a lovely weekend too and looking forward to your next vlog. Please give us your classic eye roll. I get a kick out of that 🤣🤣
Well Done!! A pal of mine, who knows a lot more about a lot of thigs than i do, told me that you can cross the Wash in a Narrow Boat, I thought he was taking the micky, i was kind of convinced eventually, and here is the proof. 👍
Ha ha when I first watched a narrowboat cross the wash I thought I've got to do that some day. It's a big tick off my list of things to do before I kick the bucket. Ha ha
I lived by the banks of Stowbridge near Downham Market and know how fast that tidal flow can be. Sometimes you get cresting tidal surges, and the inside mud banks can rise up quite high (and really sticky). Never saw it from the water which seems like a thrilling way to experience the river. Thank you for the video.
Hello Richard thanks for the great comment. It was abit scary having to dodge all the sand bank. Later on I could see why. I went back at low tide. Join me again when I have to reverse miles. So annoying.
Absolutely brilliant vlog Cap’n W! My friend and I were discussing that crossing last night, so finding your video was just great. That engine sounds lovely, I think I’d be petrified to find myself on the open sea with a vintage engine.
It's one of those trips I wanted to do for ages. It's a big tick off my list. Breaking down on the river was my biggest fear. Thankyou for joining me on my journey. Have a good day.
You were a long way from Downham Market when you put it up on the screen. It's a shame you did not stop in Kings Lynn. I would have loved to have met up with you, shown you around our beautiful town and popped into my local for a pint or two 🤣
Yeah i realised later i was way off. my maps pretty vague. Ha ha.. He took us up river because leaving us in Kings lynn was to dangerous because we didn't know the river. That river was the hardest bit of the journey. Bloody mental speed. Cheers Brain
Good job Will , rippers . I've seen Wash crossings before and yours was pretty non event which is good . Unusual when crossing the Wash you have to beach your boat to wait for the tide to turn but a break from the tension of the crossing i suppose . Happy narrowboating :-)
Thankfully it was a good crossing. I didn't like waiting for the tide to turn my boat was drifting all over. All my checking paid off. Ha ha Thanks again for joining me.

Thankyou so much Christine. It was a scary trip but exciting at the same time. The river was the hardest part but thankfully we all made it ok. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Cheers
How exciting! I held my breath through the whole video. You three were so brave. I watched Jo and Michael on Perseverance do it a couple of years ago. They brought David - Cruising the Cut and Lorna Jane along with them. Was very exciting too. Thank you for all the great vlogs Will! Janet
Hello guys. It's a must trip for the boating adventurous types. Scary but exciting at the same time. Can't be any worse than breakdown on the tidal Trent. Ha ha Cheers for watching.
I don't think I wanted to because anchors are heavy and difficult to get up once they dig in. Each wave lifted the boat and dropped it down again abit further round. Just go with it I suppose in the end. Thanks for watching Michael.
Well done Will, I watched the whole crossing with baited breath. Definitely not something I’d be brave enough to do, so what’s the next challenge now that you’ve crossed The Wash?
I wouldn't want to cross the Wash in a narrowboat. It's OK at low tide but the same waters you were crossing could have a 20ft swell on a spring tide with the wind coming from the wrong direction. Imagine what could happen if you broke down half way across. We've kept boats on the Gt Ouse near our home for around thirty years just south of the first non tidal lock at the bottom of the New Bedford River and can get to Kings Lynn in around five hours. We went there and out into the Wash a number of times back in the 1990's but even we came a cropper in 1995 when we left Kings Lynn too early when coming back down to Denver Sluice. We hit a hidden sandbar just south of Stow bridge, north of Downham Market. The boat came to a full stop at which, the river just flowed straight into the aft cutout where the outboard motor sat. The boat sank in less than a couple of minutes and we and our dogs had to swim ashore. The boat was a total loss but luckily the insurance paid out and we bought a bigger boat with an inboard engine as a replacement. We did the journey many more times in that one but it was much better fitted out for the sea having navigation aids such as depth sounder, radio, GPS etc I've done Dayskipper and Yachmaster Offshore training courses too but am still wary of the Wash. You have to get the tides just right.
The sea was the easy bit. It's the river that scared me. It was racing in. If one of us broke down it could of turn nasty pretty quick. The pilot was very wary of sand bars coming up river and when the tide went out I could see all the sand bars. I wouldn't want to navigate that river on my own. Must of been terrifying for you guys having to swim for it. We made it ok so that's the main thing. Thanks for the great story Derek.
I was more nervous the day before but on the day I was excited and I enjoyed it. It's good to be abit nervous it means you care. Have a good weekend Keith.

No I'm a solo boater. The shot from inside was sent to me by the other boater. It's a great trip that you must do at least once Dale. Thanks for watching.
@@NarrowboatWill I just wondered if there was a safety requirement like one of the tunnels, but I cannot remember which one, where you have to have a second crew member. Thanks for the speedy reply Will!
Will, right at the beginning, you said "wouldn't want to do this alone" - surely that's prohibited? Surely you have to have a pilot? Also Q: was that a sandbar where the seals were and you had to wait for the tide? Or was it a bit of Blighty? Anyway, the journey was exhilarating, thanks! God save the King!
Yes i ment just me and the pilot going. I'm glad other boats were with us. I don't think i have to have a pilot and i could go on my own. Rather not. ha ha That sand bar is always there it's where all the boats land when crossing. God bless the queen.
You should never, ever aproach seals close enough to drive them into the sea; it causes them great distress and can cause the death of their pups. There are currently moves going through parliament to make this a serious criminal offense, as common sense does not seem to be enough.
@@NarrowboatWill That old chestnut, the wind noise. Bearable at times, but overpowering at others. It can't be just me that struggles with your audio, Shirley? Maybe they're too polite? 😆 Edit: I'm not trying to be nasty. Have you tried a dead cat yet? (They're a thing, not a joke.)

Just a question, we’re you alone onboard or did you have a companion who was camera shy? We will be planning this in the next 2 years but Dawn says she will do to Kings Lynn by train!!! LoL 😂
Prayers for the entire world on the passing of Queen Elizabeth yesterday! She was a brilliant, kind and dedicated lady
Bless her heart Kat. She spent all her adult life in service of country. Have a lovely weekend.
How deep is The Wash Mate....>>>>??????
Looks a bit sea monstery.
30 feet. It's not that deep because we follow an old river. It was one of those tick list things to do Frank.
No more squeaky bum time Will 🤣🤣🫣
Ha ha exactly. I can relax now. Sort of...
Fantastic will only thing wrong with your vlog , you aint Jennifer Aniston lol
Ha ha have you seen her without make up.
well the answer to that is i would lv to , filthy thumbs up lol
I use an apeman camera, just like a gopro but with a screen, and way cheaper
My go pro is good quality with very poor battery life. I just stick with my phone if I can. Cheers buddy
Woould have made more sence to tie alongside to make a pontoon.
Do you mean tie the boats together? That would be bad because the waves would bash the boats together.
Why do they call it "the Wash"? Scary.
Because lots of rivers feed into it and wash over the sand. Simple answer. I can tick that off my list now Sandi. Thankyou.
You should never, ever aproach seals close enough to drive them into the sea; it causes them great distress and can cause the death of their pups. There are currently moves going through parliament to make this a serious criminal offense, as common sense does not seem to be enough.
Fair enough. I think 3 big narrowboats beaching had them twitching a bit as well.
Sorry, Will. Unwatchable with the sound turned on...
Oh really. It was that bad. Thanks for the feedback
@@NarrowboatWill You know I'm a fussy bugger, but I struggled through about half of it before giving up. 🙃
@@sarkybugger5009 What the sound or picture?
@@NarrowboatWill That old chestnut, the wind noise. Bearable at times, but overpowering at others.
It can't be just me that struggles with your audio, Shirley? Maybe they're too polite? 😆
Edit: I'm not trying to be nasty. Have you tried a dead cat yet? (They're a thing, not a joke.)
@@sarkybugger5009 I'm not buying anymore equipment. I spent enough on that last mic to stop wind noise. I'm out in high winds for god sakes. Ha ha ha . Nobody else said anything.
