David Coverdale was one singers of the band. He joined in 1973 to replace Ian Gillan and left in 1976 after the departure of the founding member and guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore

Throughout the band's history, Deep Purple has had something of a revolving-door policy with its members. Fourteen musicians in all have been members of Deep Purple since the group formed in 1968, several members often leaving only to return a short time later.

When I saw the title, it reminded me of a track on Thin Lizzys album, "Bad Reputation". ie , its the same title but a totally different song. Having said that, I have been enjoying that Bad Reputation album for years since i bought it in 1977.Superb album , and the title track is great, with fantastic drumming from Brian Downey.

This was really beautiful. I believe it was David Coverdale on vocals this time. The amazing thing about Deep Purple is that they have been playing for almost 5 decades, through many style and personnel changes, but always bring good musicianship whether it is hard rock, jazzy rock, soul rock, classical or soul like this beauty. I saw them live in '72/73 with Ian Gillan on vocals and they rocked. I have a friend in Germany who saw them live 3 weeks ago, with Ian Gillan on vocals yet again all these years later. He said they closed with "When a blind man cries" (another beauty), and the whole crowd got very emotional which brought a tear to Gillan's eye, and everyone else. It looks as though since they have lost Jon Lord, the Purple may not be together much longer - but who knows...
One of the rockers you may love is "Lazy" - the keyboards are wild...

A couple of things about this song. It's a fine example of the soulfulness David Coverdale brought to the band, apparently Stevie Wonder was visiting the studio when this vocal was recorded, and a song that Coverdale continued to perform for a number of years with Whitesnake. With its acoustic and melodic focus, it's also indicative of the direction Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing increasingly began to take, and it's a song he continues to perform to this day.

I had a feeling that was Coverdale. I only noticed it in playback.

This might have been the song that designed the sound of Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. This song has more in common with them than the trad. DP sound.

Definitely need more Deep Purple like "When a Blind Man Cries" and don't forget about Rainbow (the DP guitarist next band). - the song "Stargazer" is a must.

Soldier of Fortune was sung by David Coverdale the 2nd singer of Deep Purple.
He has a deeper voice than Ian. Who you like to go on high tone.
Other songs by David is, "Mistreated".
The song where both of them sing together where you can really hear the difference is the song "sail away".
    😊😊😊

If you would like to listen to their original singer - "Hush" was a big hit in the USA back in 1968.

Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song and Stormbringer , in the album Stormbringer, before he quit the band which had became too funky for him. He kept all his ideas for his project Rainbow.

David Coverdale wrote and performed this song, along with guitarist Ritche Blackmore. I always think of it as a Whitesnake song as I saw and heard them do it first. When Coverdale joined Purple along with Glenn Hughes, both brought a more bluesy edge to the band ( this was back in 1974) and you could argue they became a totally different band. David Coverdale is reaching the end of his career now, his voice isn't what it was, and Ritchie still plays in his folk band with his wife, both guys are in their seventies now. Please listen to Mistreated by Deep Purple, preferably the California Jam version from 1974.

Made In Europe has the best live version of Mistreated, along with Burn, Coverdale would often throw an a cappella piece of Soldier into his performances, I first saw him live with what would become Whitesnake at a cinema in Ashington, Northumberland in June 1978, next time was October 1978 on the first night of the Trouble tour at Newcastle City Hall, his voice has been gone for a long time and he's been topping up the pension pot for quite a lot of that time.
