Actually got my hands on 1 of the few us imports once. Have owned 2 pre ban 550 over the years. 1 sniper sold in the us in 2009 for 18k$. Private sale.
What set this rifle apart from other versions of "sniper rifles" was it's myriad adjustment abilities. Even the scope mount allowed adjustment to fit the individual firing it. The expense that SIG Neuhausen spent refining the standard 550/Stgw90 into this rifle was amazing. It was nothing less than the US Army spent converting its stock of M14's into National Match competition grade rifles. Possibly double that expense.
I think the front sight block off plate may actually be a mount for a strap that goes on top of the barrel to prevent heat mirage, I have seen them in a few Swiss competition rifles.
It should be pointed out that the -1 designation indicates that the rifle has a 1 in 10" twist rate. SIG did make other 550 series rifles with a -2 designation and a 1 in 7" twist rate. Those are even more rare in the United States.
Oddly, if it was released to market today i could see that being a very successful combination attributes with the increased use of police snipers i have seen in Europe at large crowed events. The high accuracy combined with the low over penetration of the 5.56 would be ideal. Sharing a common round with the other police weapons also reduces the cost and logistics side of things when taken to national scale, something which does matter as police forces are usually operating on a tight yearly budget. I mean whats cheaper, an extra 5K rounds of 5.56 for the snipers, or ordering a small amount 7.62x51 or 338.The fact that the 550 is a proven highly reliable platform also has its own appeal over other weapons in its class. Just makes a lot of sense to me for the police marksman role.
At $10,000 per copy (in 1989 dollars), I'm not surprised they didn't sell very well. Considering it's in the 5.56 caliber, and the fact that the Accuracy International AX308 is half the price (in 2020 dollars), it seems this rifle fills only the "deep pocket'd collector" niche.
Very rare and very expensive in canada. Lucky enough to try it, a random owner in my gun range was kind enough to offer to let me try. Super super light trigger.
That barrel and bipod if installed on a standard receiver and combined with a larger magazine would have made for the ideal light support weapon. Not a replacement for the 'LMG' but a halfway weapon for special operations.
Couple of mistakes - the 1989 import ban didn't stop the import of these rifles (or similar types, like the PSG-1), you could still import them if you pinned the stock as they are suitable "for sporting purposes". It was the 1998 ban on the import of rifles that use LCMMs that banned them from import. Also, the piece of metal where the front sight would be is the latch for the mirage band.

There are lots of photos of the police from that sad day if you search. The "tactical" teams are wearing blue baseball cap, not ballistic helmets. The current price point for one in excellent conditions WITH original scope and case is around 4000-4500€ which means it is a fully equiped (Hensolt scope, bipod, mount, ect) rifle for a bit less than 5000$, not cheap but a far cry from the price when it was originally exported to the US.

Cool, you’re in Switzerland! Happy New Year!
Love this sweet sim rifle 15 years ago in CS 1.6. SG550 and SG552
Safety disengaged! Naughty, naughty!
My favourite and dream rifle...
the GSG9 actually used regular SG550 with ACOGS for close range sniping/marksman role and obviously the PSG-1 for longer ranges.
It's Swiss you know from that it'll function perfectly but will be ridiculously expensive.
Happy New Year to every one.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ten years ago a dealer in Brussels had some new ones for sale for 5000€, a regular 550 was 2000€. A ZFK55 was 2500€, now they're 5K
Это инфляция =)
... and explain things everyone know:)
Thanks s lot. Perfect as usual.
Happy new year, cool rifle!
Pretty nice for distance plinking!!!!
This thing is basically a 5.56mm PSG-1 for a similar price and weight but without much oomph per bullet.
What i've the most, besides the trigger, it's that bipod; look really good to me.
Parker-Hale bipod
Last time I was this early, the Swiss were still neutral.
Wait....
so you’re telling me that this is a nuclear powered scope
the future is now
Happy new year from Switzerland! Such a good way to start the year :D
I was going to buy it but now that Ian messed up all the stock adjustments I’m going to pass.
Thank you , Ian .
Haha I live near kreuzlingen and have bought guns from kessler auctions.
I love your videos keep it up.
Greetings from Switzerland
This is what that dude in the first Bourne movie used to try and kill Jason in France right? Cool gun!
Let me show you its features!” I thought that’s what you were goin to say lol
Ian: I just want to say I love your videos, as do most people in the community. Thanks alot for making them, you have helped me make some money once or twice in repairs for other people by opening them up and showing me what the inside is suppose to look like and operate, for that I am grateful. Your video titled Ian's get rich slow success story was one in particular that inspired me to pursue my goal of land and building my own place when I stumbled across it one day. I'm taking a different approach but none the less, it showed commitment to the goal. Eventually I'll make it out to one of your competitions when I am in better health and will give you a run for your money. It's on the bucket list. Till we meet in person, keep up the good work. Fight the good fight!

I think this is my new favourite rifle.
Very cool, very high quality, and very niche.
Such a shame about the small calibre.
Happy New Year thanks for all the videos realy love them thanks
One of my dream guns.
The title is as close to perfect as possible.
The 'front sight block' is for holding mirage bands
Portugal have bought some for the Conter-Terrorism Police Unit too.
So right now there's the Swiss Arms (former SIG) 751 SAPR, same rifle, but with 7.62mm bullets. With a scope, tripod an different stock attached, its basicly the same rifle as the 550-1, just better :-)
And now there's a SAPR 750, which is the same rifle in 6.5CM.
Would have been great to compare this rifle with the SIG 751 SAPR which is chambered in .308.
Nice video though, as usual.
Around the time of Port Arthur massacre the Tassie police were equipped with regular SG 550 (assuming that they had the semi version). The SG 550 was already so accurate for the role. Back then there was no militarised tactical teams but it was a shock to see the footage of the regular blue uniformed men with the green SG 550s and looked cool, contrasting the gunman who had an AR and an AK if I recall correctly.
There are lots of photos of the police from that sad day if you search. The "tactical" teams are wearing blue baseball cap, not ballistic helmets. Also the shorter SG551 not SG550 i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/04/28/04/339A97C700000578-3562751-His_trail_of_destruction_took_the_lives_of_35_tourists_and_local-a-63_1461813068461.jpg
Actually the shorter SG551, not full size SG550
Just for info: I am not familiar with the US secondary weapon market but these aren't that rare in western Europe (although finding an unfired one will be a challenge) and, for exemple, if you type Sig 550-1 Sniper on armiusate.it (the italian equivalent of gunbroker) right now there are 3 of them for sale (plus probably a few more at gun stores). The current price point for one in excellent conditions WITH original scope and case is around 4000-4500€ which means it is a fully equiped (Hensolt scope, bipod, mount, ect) rifle for a bit less than 5000$, not cheap but a far cry from the price when it was originally exported to the US.
It looks like a great gun but with two little criticisms (which Ian covered in the video), the price is too big and the caliber is too small.
SIG 550 rifles look very good.
Feel like I should add this to my wishlist
How come you spent new year's eve in Switzerland? For next time - please check out the Wyssen-Defence Kit to transform the K31 into a proper sniper rifle. And while you're at consider to give the Hubertec muzzle brake a shot, too.
"The AutoNoob's first form"
Semi-automatic*
Counter Strike 1.6! Love it. The Sig 550’s are so sexy. Another solid vid. However, we still need a AKS-74u review. Thanks Ian.
FNH could learn a thing or two about a high quality, adjustable folding stock. Im looking at you, Mk20 SSR
actually someone did ask
the standard issued sniper rifle of Chinese PLA , type qbu 88,is a small bore gun
Will you make a video about the whole SIG 55X 54X family? Greetings & wish you happy new year!
With it being a purpose built sniper rifle with quite a longer barrel they must have some special bullets to use in it and they might be more powerful
Wouldn't mind seeing some long range shooting with this machine.
